      True, but to play devils advocate: when the prices go up, they go up for the rest of us, non minimum wage workers, therfore it's really a form of subsidising unskilled workers through inflation. The unskilled workers who's job isn't worth that money still benefit from this though.

    • @Pan_Z
      @Pan_Z 2 года назад

      That is an option. Another is employers will replace labourers with automation. Raising minimum wage increases the quality of life & pool of unskilled workers, but decreases the labour demand. There's debate where the equilibrium between the two is.

    A city-wide minimum wage is one thing. Even county-wide. But nation-wide, when there's a HUGE disparity between the actual purchasing power of $15 in New Jersey versus $15 in Mississippi, it just doesn't work.

    • @grantjohnson5785
      @grantjohnson5785 5 лет назад +9

      @Natasel I'm not disagreeing with that. But that should be something evaluated and voted on by individual economies, not dictated to all economies by a handful of large ones.

    • @grantjohnson5785
      @grantjohnson5785 5 лет назад +8

      @Natasel Unfortunately, an individual has very little power compared to a corporation, so in many cases getting fair pay simply can't be done on an individual basis - especially when there is a labor market swarming with illegals who will work for less! I'm not saying labor unions (or public sector unions) are all good - they inherently tend towards corruption, just like government and corporations and any other group of people - but they were, and remain, necessary for a variety of reasons. For businesses that treat their workers fairly (my father worked for a family-owned multinational manufacturing company for 30+ years, and they treated him *great*) neither unions nor minimum wage are needed. But the sad truth is, most businesses *don't* treat their workers well. Given the opportunity, *most* will underpay their workers to gain more profits. So collectively, either at the ballot box or through union negotiations, or both, SMALL groups of individuals must decide what's best for their SMALL area (business, city, *maybe* a county).

    • @grantjohnson5785
      @grantjohnson5785 5 лет назад +1

      @Natasel Exactly. It's the lesser of two evils. You're either going to have small tyranny of the voters/workers, or you're going to have big tyranny of the employers.

    • @grantjohnson5785
      @grantjohnson5785 5 лет назад +2

      @Natasel Who said anything about the government? If individual citizens want to unionize, that's their prerogative, and it has nothing to do with "the government". If individual citizens want to *directly* vote for a local minimum wage, that's their prerogative, and again, it has nothing to do with "the government". It's when we get to any level above that, where elected officials call the shots (removing the people from a *direct* vote) that the problems get out of control.

    • @grantjohnson5785
      @grantjohnson5785 5 лет назад +2

      @Natasel Then you are free to work elsewhere. Or, in many cases, you can work there and not join the union but pay what's called "fair share" (where you pay the union a nominal fee for negotiating higher wages for you). If you don't like the minimum wage in one city, you at least had the option to vote on it; or you can move elsewhere. The point is that YOU, the individual, have a direct say in what happens to you. That is not the case with statewide and federal minimum wages set by elected officials.
      Incidentally, as a member of a teacher's union, I'll say that I don't particularly care for my union's political stances on just about anything.... except advocating for better school funding and better teacher pay, because that's what they're *supposed* to advocate for. It's when unions step outside of those bounds and start advocating for things they have no business being involved in that people (union members and the general public alike) get pissed off.

      @@blackhand8299 respectfully, you don’t understand economics. You don’t, can’t, and should not remove greed. People follow the incentives. Economics doesn’t screw people over. Fact, it is government that screws people over because it chooses winners and losers. For example, when government says “no one can make less than $15 an hour” the consequence is jobs are lost, hours are reduced, benefits are slashed because no one in their right mind will lose money for over paying a low skilled job for a product/service with low profit margins. The consumer pays the cost in the end. You must view economics in terms of trade offs. There are no solutions in economics, only trade offs.
      I would beg the question, if the government can just say “no less than $15 an hour” then why don’t those nice people go the distance and mandate the wage be no less than $30 an hour. Because economics won’t allow for it! $15 an hour doesn’t make sense but enough voters (such as myself) were duped into this.
      Minimum wage increases will persist forever because they make the problem worse but no one is paying attention.

      If your characterization of minimum wage was true, wouldn’t it be “minimal wage” and not “minimum wage”?
      It’s a “minimum wage” because it was designed to keep employers from putting workers on wages so low that it kept them in severe poverty. It started because some very young girls working in sweatshops got their wages cut and didn’t have power to do anything about it themselves. The minimum wage law was part of a bigger movement of worker protections, to include child labor laws.
      Minimum wage means it the wage someone can work and not starve.

Not everyone is blessed with the ability to create something from nothing. Nor is it socially responsible to assume that employees do not deserve to share in the profitability of the enterprise which they invest their time and labor. But to ignore the cost of living and only hire at or below a living wage is exploitation when the business is successful beyond a reasonable return on investment. This is based on the fundamental Law of Supply; when the price of production increases, the supply curve undergoes a negative shift. Wages go up to $15 an hour. Bos isn't going to pay $45+ entitlements so lays off one person. 2 workers get more money, one loses out. The 2 workers need to pick up the extra work. Because of a minimum wage law that was imposed here in South Africa, I had to let 2 people go because we couldn't afford to pay them the pay that was prescribed. I found out that one of them lived on the street for a few years before finding another job elsewhere. By then, because of our crappy economy, a lot of consumer goods went up in prices and that minimum wage didn't helped them at all. Also these people were living in a room I provided, but after I had to let them go, they were out on the streets. Like Ben Shapiro said, it takes away your choice as employer to offer wage in accordance with the job and its demands and also the choice of the employee to accept it or not. Minimum wage could also prevent you from finding a 1st job if you are fresh out of school with all the qualifications but no experience. If you are a qualified chartered accountant (on paper) with no job experience, you start out as a store room clerk / PA to the boss (like my son's girlfriend) and work your way up until you hit the job you want and is qualified for. Minimum wage will make it a lot more difficult to hire young people fresh out of school and that important 1st job might take awhile to start off... . .

Just had a friend who has been an EMT for over twelve years and was only making $12/hour (doesn't cover all the bills) and kept getting passed over for promotions to then get let go because they wanted younger guys in to work for a cheaper hourly rate......now he is trying to get a job in security (took all of his classes, certified in everything) and was told it's $7.50 an hour during your training, which the length is determined by the company (he would do the training until they felt comfortable he was ready) to give him a job that only pays $12. The issue is that when he asked before the interview what the pay was so that he didn't waste their time (in order to pay all their bills he had to be working at $16/hour) over the phone the interviewer told him the pay started at $19/hour. It's this kind of bullshit that puts people in the position of working these jobs that are meant for teenagers to start out with. Companies that sell one thing to people before interviewing, to then pull the wool over their eyes when they actually get interviewed. Business practices are getting shadier and shadier because they want qualified workers but then don't pay what the worker is worth or what is required in order to keep a roof over their head and food on the table.

You'd have to cook at home, and you aren't getting a nice single family home or an apartment with a pool and gym. Just because you can't live a decently luxurious lifestyle on minimum wage doesn't mean your salary should be skyrocketed to 15/hr. In fact I would argue this is by design. If all it took to live a decent life was work at bk or a gas station then not many people would strive for more. An example of this is welfare and how hard people will go out of their way to get on it, such as having kids with strangers and leaving the father, faking disabilities, or taking advantage of unemployment via recent covid situation. A better way to look it this is, if you want more, then work for more because brother if you think you were dealt a bad hand trust me, there is a seemingly infinite amount of people who had it off much worse and a lot of them find their way out of it. Minimum wage jobs used to be done by slaves who weren't allowed to learn more than what was needed for their masters. By remaining in said job, those people are willingly replacing their own personal responsibilities in life, such as making enough to live on, to their corporate masters, because hell... life is so much easier when you don't have to apply yourself and just flip burgers all day. A slave does that. A robot does that. And neither get paid anything at all.

    • @Kainis80
      @Kainis80 5 лет назад +6

      @pullupseattle while I can sympathize with someone with a birth defect, they usually have to have a caretaker of some sort. That caretaker usually provides the function of a parent, thereby they are very similar to teens in the way of life responsibilities. So the argument still stands. The reality is that if one does have a mental defect requiring such a job, again... their job will be automated. In this case, it is no fault of their own, true. These are the exceptions to the rule. However, the more said employee costs the company (real cost of employees to the company are usually double their wages), the quicker they get replaced with equipment. If you personally are not smart enough to say, go and learn a construction skill (largest labor shortage currently in the country, with salaries often starting at $21+ / hr which is more than twice the level for poverty), then... you are being lazy and it's only a matter of time before you are replaced with a toaster.

      There are plenty of counter measures against inflationary policies like imposition of minimum wage, both fiscal and monetary. Normally it is accompanied by an increase in the tax bracket. This argument against minimum wage, i think, is only applicable in the US. In third world countries, the labor market heavily outnumber the available manpower demand. People are more likely exploited and private unions almost always doesn't fare well as companies can virtually make their own and make it appear that the employees organized it. You'd also observe a high underemployment of workers in these economies wherein indoviduals are forced to work low-paying or low-skilled jobs.

      @Charles Ziegler III but raising minimum wage means more cost to companies though. Portion of that incremental cost , if not all, will be levied on products and services so businesses could still meet their target bottom line. If it marginally increases living costs for everyone else, surely that is morally and ethically the right thing to do? A good paying job requires one of two things - college degree or trade school certs. Problem now in society is that even with these degrees or certs, companies see one thing they don't like (personality, age, affirmative action requirements, social media postings, etc) they can choose not to hire you.....degrees or certs do not garauntee someone is hired (are your chances better?! Yes), so we have many people out there that have the education, experience and background for these higher paying jobs, but companies aren't hiring them. A friend of mine who is past his prime for EMT now, is now trying to get jobs in a different field (entry level at a ship yard, and also security) and is having trouble getting the pay he needs to support his family because the entry pay is below what it costs for their home, insurance, phone bill, utilities, food and owning one vehicle.....🤷‍♀️ It seems that the system is stacked against people being able to support a family and be able to save money (they are always in the rat race of living paycheck to paycheck, not having an emergency fund for when something happens). And the other flip side to this problem is that it's not enough money to survive, but yet welfare says they make too much money for benefits.......this is why good people are then embarrassed to ask for help from their friends or don't want to stand in the lines for assistance from the local churches.....they don't want to be labeled a burden on society because they are trying and getting nowhere.

    • @nvaranavage

People who are struggling to find jobs don't have the money set aside to be able to move, they are living paycheck to paycheck, with no ability to save money because the entire paycheck is being used for their bills and food on the table.......it's sad.......these stimulus checks don't make people want to get jobs, they see it as a way to not get a job, that money should be put to better use by establishing or continue monetary support for groups to help people find jobs, training programs for jobs, training programs to help mentally impaired people maintain jobs, and programs to help people on welfare be able to get off welfare.......the stimulus checks are enabling people to remain complacent. And those that are actually trying and have a strong work ethic are being sidelined because of the political agenda because corporations don't want to be called out for discrimination because they are coddling people who are being lazy on the job. I've seen this a lot firsthand.

It is not livable for someone trying to raise a family, live on their own without roommates, or other standards of living. The problem is too many people allow their living expenses to exceed their ability to generate income. The whole point of working is to start out low, and build experience and education and progress onto better jobs. You then acquire additional life expenses (house, family, new car, etc.) as you can afford them. When you get those priorities out of order, you're stuck in a situation that is difficult to climb out of.

    I’ve been a business owner for 18-years and after the first couple, found you just can’t settle on a minimum for anyone. More times then not, people use the hourly rate to milk the clock. I, in-turn, made most positions incentive based. In short, it’s minimum wage, but with a metrics scale. The more you do, the more you get paid. I own a couple businesses, but, for construction, all aspects of what we do has an incentive (sometime piece rate) calculation.
    For example, Bobby makes a $7.50/hr. base, with a metrics incentive. Today Bobby is laying bricks, $7.50/hr. to lay bricks is pretty low, but $30/hr is really good, so a good “motivated” brick layer should average (for example) 100-bricks an hour, so I make each brick worth .30¢.
    Once Bobby exceeds the $7.50/hr. mark, his pay rolls into 100% incentive based (so he’s guaranteed to make at least minimum wage per federal law). So as long as Bobby lays 100-bricks per hour, he’s making $30/Hr.
    When I was paying $18/hr. I couldn’t get averages past about 40-bricks per worker, per hour. NOW, I have guys easily getting double and triple numbers of bricks laid, and it is beneficial on every level for both the company, the customer, and the workers.
    Customer gets their projects done timely with high quality, workers get paid based on their level of motivation, and company needs less workers to get more work completed. The workers LOVE it so much they prefer less help. Many are just lazy by nature, especially nowadays, and many employees will find places to hide, or look busy when being watched, or constantly complain about anything to avoid getting work accomplished.
    This type of pay structure has allowed the company to bring on quality control workers (sometimes we rotate layers/QC). If quality is subpar, “Bobby” is back-charged for the repair work, all the way back to $7.50/hr. This incentivizes “Bobby” to make sure quality is as important as quantity.
    We follow this theme in all aspects of what we do. It puts the responsibility for a good paycheck in the hands of the worker. If you want to be lazy, fine, your paycheck (and future) will show that. However, those that are here to make a good living have an opportunity to do so. If we are on a time crunch, the company can raise the incentive in many different ways. To follow same example, we have thrown in a $250 bonus incentive if Bobby completes 1000 bricks in a day. Doing this also helps offset those that may have a set amount they need to make and are content with a $1200/wk. check, that extra $250 (in addition to .30¢/brick, typically gets them motivated to push a little harder at times. There will always be those that still do the bare minimum, but too many want that big check, so they’re replaced pretty quickly (and know it). Happy productive workers, happy customers, and a profitable business is always the goal. Since implementing this several years ago, our production and quality have sky-rocketed, while our employee turn-over rate, has maintained less than 3%.
    Employees need motivation now, more than ever, and the more motivated they are, the less you’ll need on the job. Instead of 6-8 workers laying bricks (or whatever) on a project, that’s typically cut in half or less with a better completion rate, less expenses for benefits on more workers, or, triple the projects with same amount of workers that would normally get paid hourly to stand around half the day.

I had made over 50k In one year. That one and only year everyone at the factory had improved the entire economy of the town. They had newer vehicles. Everyone was happy. Then Star Ranch decided to impose minimum wage to increase profits. Everyone was devastated. Most quit the only people that stayed were old who were making minimum wage anyway. They couldn't decrease the cost per tray because there was slow workers as well who couldn't meet minimum wage. Some of us were making stupid amounts of money. Seriously, go and check out great economists like Friedman, Sowell, Moises, Williams, and so on, who talk about minimum wage. I didn't get the argument against it before, of course I didn't know much about economics either prior, until I heard Sowell discuss it. It made me reconsider, especially once I began to truly study the ins and out of economics. Minimum wage regulation truly is not a good, and actually hurts businesses and workers while distorting the market.
    There are ways to deal with wages in general, but raising minimum wage is the worst move. It's low on the federal level for a reason, and one, if you're intellectually honest and objective, should find out why; as well as what would happen if you raised it according to what the foolish notion of sjw's who, although some mean well, don't actually engage in this stuff thoroughly with data, insight, debate, and proper observations without all the emotions and virtue signaling. You cannot approach this ad hominems of incompassion; that's not a sound argument or objective in any way.
    Another thing I noticed, just as a quick digression, why do these types say these things, but then advocate for stuff like open boarders that would actually hurt these same people they claim to want to help?! The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

      You have to remember, minimum wage is supposed to be there to help you meet the cost of living in general. You can actually calculate the general cost of living like in coun tries such as England. They raised it as the cost of living went up over the years. It needed updating. America just don't bother to do this as far as I can see often enough. Minimum wage cannot be say x amount that gives you 300 pound a week and gives you say, 1000 after taxes but the cost of rent and bills comes to more than that each month. Nobody can sustain that. That is bad for the economy as that person has no money to spend and if you raise the wage so they can manage some more, the money goes back into the economy as they are happy and purchace product rather than do nothing but the minimum spend. In other countries, this has thrived. Each state have its own minimum wage? Not sure what Murica does with that

    • @DarthBalsamic
      @DarthBalsamic 5 лет назад +7

      @@chrismanager9615 That's actually not true. That isn't what minimum wage is for at all. Minimum wage was nothing but a government formality. The living wage, as you've stipulated, is a myth that socialists push to redistribute wealth.
      People need wages(income) in general to live. The variables determining how much that amounts to and what it takes to achieve that are endless and important to consider objectively and comprehensively. The living wage argument is extraordinarily flawed not only because it distorts the markets to control the outcome, but it doesn't even take into account the variety of considerations that determine what that wage is. Also, who determines what that "living wage" is on a federal, state and even local level?! And this is just the U.S..
      This also goes into what role government plays in everyday life. History has proven repeatedly that government engaging in this sort of market distortion almost always fails. Government cannot be, and was never designed to be a parent, God, or a subsidy utopia.
      Also, one can calculate what it would cost to live anywhere. All it takes is an analysis. They've got all sorts of freedom indexes that go over this very thing so I don't what you're talking about. England has it's own section highlighting it's economy. Economics is universal that way, you just have to analyze and apply the information proportionally and appropriately. The economic data for Boston cannot be compared to England directly, for example, because it would be apples to oranges. A policy that might work in the Hungarian government might not work in the federal government. I see many folks make this mistake all the time and you appear to be doing it too. The economists I've read from all highlight this mistake.
      Also, you cannot anecdotally bring up however much income you have and then say your expenses are much more, and then blame the minimum wage here. That's just faulty logic on your part because of your own belief in a living wage that you believe a government must force your job, businesses, or other citizens to pay for. Suppose that living wage you suggest forces your job to cut workers, raise prices, or even go bankrupt, then what?! And these are just the basic considerations, this goes much deeper. This has been studied repeatedly and it always reveals how it hurts an economy. Even countries that run on social programs must consider these things. Your own UK/EU are dealing with some of these very issues in the Brexit saga.
      The other problem, as the economist Sowell denotes, is that you cannot see economics as some sort of zero sum game. What this means is that, and this is just a general example, if you raise the minimum wage to whatever you think it should be, that doesn't mean it would have the expected outcome of everyone getting payed more or even improving the economy. A basic way it's usually seen is with folks who believe that raising taxes in general creates revenue. Economic studies show that to be false glaringly.
      Also, I'm not sure if you understand how America works, or even how other countries work for that matter, but I live in New York, for example, and this is the most expensive city perhaps in the country. They have raised minimum wage exceedingly and it's not doing well for businesses at all. In fact, no matter how much they raise it the cost of living increases and quality of living decreases. I would love to live in Malta, for example, and what I pay down here for a small apartment, would buy me an expansive home in Malta. Quality of life would go up significantly. The minimum wage in both places, especially if I ran my own business or even got payed the same for doing the same job, would not have to considered nearly at all. The minimum wage in NY is more than double that federally, and it's still very unaffordable here. So should we raise the minimum wage more to make it more livable?! That's rhetorical of course because there are a number of issues to consider that will constantly evade whatever living wage you are trying to meet.
      Also, make no mistake about it, we have corrupt leadership in both the government, and many state governments. Many of them don't adhere to sound economic principles to our own demise.
      Overall, and I mean this sincerely, check out some of Thomas Sowell's books on economics as well as in general. They're good reads and help shed some light on these subjects. Take care.

      @@warrencapaldi9544 I've seen these arguments time and time again and they got so annoying that I had to finally read up on them. Some folks mean well but just haven't thought it through. Others are simply being dishonest. Either way this stuff must be understood properly otherwise the results could be cataclysmic. I live in NYC and I see this nonsense everyday in person. I've met a ton of people who hate New York and are looking to leave.
      The sad part is they try to use compassion and egalitarianism as arguments which furthers the faulty logic. There is nothing compassionate about imposing economical ideas without considering everyone else just so one could appear compassionate. Even Jesus calls this out for what it is.
      Funny story is, and I'm going to digress here, Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell both believed in socialism prior to becoming economists. The moment they started looking into the details of things they both realized how flawed, and dangerous in some cases, these inadequate views of economics were. Walter Williams openly admits it casually. I'm a black guy myself and most in my community fall prey to these faulty ideas about how to deal with economics. I've read study after study highlighting why blacks are disproportionately poorer, and the majority of the time it's our fault. Sure there are some external elements, but they don't account for all the other reasons. I'm fortunate to come from a well off family overall who do well for themselves, and that's because they worked for it, and most of them are immigrants. A study shows that most black immigrants aren't poor at all in America, so why are the regular blacks in America?! There are answers for that too, but we don't like to talk about those. Lol

    I'm often baffled by how misguided people in America are with minimum wage. Minimum wage works great in the UK, an has stopped a lot of jobs getting undercut by foreigners who are willing to work for much less.
    Privatisation of unions is simply a wish up there with unicorns.

    • @adamasd516
      @adamasd516 5 лет назад +1

      Phi avir you brought up an important factor, foreigners. Why not regulate the labor force, which in economic, you can see as the supply, but you force the employer to pay a higher price, which is the demand. When price goes up, demand falls. That is simple economic. It’s always a balance of both forces that will work well, increase demand, meaning more jobs, reduce supply, meaning reducing the labor force, be it via reducing foreigners working or others, and you will see wages increase without actually implementing minimum wage laws.

      The issue in the UK is that a lot of jobs then either pay minimum wage or just above it. Understandable as an SME but that's why I'd strongly recommend getting a profession where you can build a strong set of skills. Because some jobs want a degree minimum for 16-17k a year, goodluck finding a decent applicant. Student loans, plus NI and tax takes a hefty chunk off of a decent wage too. Don't get me started on the student loan system.

      If every company started paying $1/hr as a wage because there are ppl that are willing to work for that amount. Than businesses will have to drop prices too because nobody would be able to afford the prices .

    • @adamasd516
      @adamasd516 5 лет назад

      lucus lopez large number of available work force is what drives down wages. Not enough jobs, all the unemployed will want that $1/hr job, because it’s better than nothing. Setting a high minimum wage just means the company hiring can only hire lesser people now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying $1/hr is good. But think of it this way, if there was a labor shortage. Company A is offering $1/hr, but company B is offering $2/hr. The job at $2/hr is filled. If Company A still managed to fill the job, then there is still a surplus in labor force. In the event that company A cannot fill the job, Company A has to offer $2/hr. Or even $3/hr. That’s how a healthy economy works. The market regulates the wages. We are not at the level because human in general is experiencing over population. There is always more labor force than jobs available. If the government manages to maintain a good balance between jobs available and labor force, there is no need for minimum wages.
