This episode was the perfect introduction to Davros. Really one of the best episode featuring him in it IMO. Easily categorizes as a "don't miss" episode.
In the early 1960s this was unlike anything else seen on television. And many of the people who saw it then remembered living through ,and fighting in, the Second World War.
Yes, agreed... At the start of episode 1 of " Genesis of the Daleks "... We can see what looks like first world war soldiers, wearing gas masks, getting mown down by machine guns... This scene HAD to be very emotional for most of the viewers who remembered the two World Wars... This scene was just a prelude for the entire story... IMO there can be no doubt that Genesis is the best EVER story.....
The Doctor speaking to Ronson earlier in the serial; 'Well you did save me from becoming the very first victim of a Dalek, thank you.' If only Ronson had known then that he had left that rather dubious honour for himself....
Everything about this scene is perfect. The sheer terror that is conveyed through Ronson's pleas, the sharp intensity of the Dalek death ray with its piercing sound effect, the Kaleds shielding their eyes with their hands and arms to protect themselves from the intensity of the blast - all of these things combine to make this scene a brilliant demonstration of the chilling nature of the Daleks and what they represent. The Daleks are the ultimate representation of relentless, merciless, indiscriminate death.
You've literally just described a very normal death scene. The acting of Ronson's pleas is nothing special at all. The dalek death ray is just a filter. The Kaleds shielding their eyes is just something they would logically do. Surely these kinds of things happen in every extermination? I've only watched a few episodes of classic doctor who but is this really "perfect"? Must be a low bar for this era of the show.
Right now, there are automated tanks and weapons that could develop into early for runners of Darleks. All that's needed are biological components. Fantasy may well Become fact in near future.

Love the 70s Dalek stories, but after the 60s the daleks looked more static in their movements , in the 60s everything constantly moved , sucker arm, gun, eyestalk constantly moving around, even different personalitys with the dalek voices, something that seemed lost on the dalek operators later on
You realize that in beginning the Darleks have a biological component built into them. Over course of centuries, the Darleks became totally machines. Think of your brain plugged into mechanical body on wheels.
Yeah, the 60s twitchy constant movements made them feel more like living things. They even had a iris that moved originally. Plus the voices I also agree on. Almost every Dalek in the 60s sounded slightly different. They did certainly lose something post 60s and never quite got it back.
Probably because the props were more than a decade old by that point. The things must've cost a pretty penny to make and I doubt the show's creators ever replaced them if they had any other option.
absolutely..these are the definitive Daleks..had 10" toy one exactly as these as a child..the multi coloured ones of later Who wouldnt have scared a fly..really poor.
It varies massively. Genesis of the Daleks has them at their most threatening, but they weren't nearly as intimidating in any of the previous three Dalek stories or the next one. You can't divide it into "old Daleks scary, new Daleks not scary," because they have had some very effective appearances in New Who and some absolutely ridiculous ones in Classic Who, but there is a general pattern of a single Dalek, or a small group of Daleks, being a more credible threat than an army of Daleks, and the Daleks usually being at their best when they're effectively scheming their way up from a position of relative weakness, like in Genesis, Power of the Daleks or Dalek. And this is, IMO, the one Davros story where his presence doesn't make the Daleks themselves less scary.
The writing and music. They’re made as a joke by Moffat when he plays fucking choir music in it and then goes “who’s scared?” If they’re not. Why would the viewer??
How nice of Davros to blame his own act of betrayal/treachery on poor Ronson. Then again, after Ronson had interfered with Davros' earlier Dalek experiment/prevented The Doctor from becoming the very-first Dalek victim, Davros did say that Ronson would later be punished for his interference/insubordination. Though I don't think that Ronson would have perhaps envisaged becoming the very-first Dalek victim himself. Then again, maybe that summed Davros up, utterly mad/evil/ruthless, and willing to stop at nothing in his quest for ultimate power, including wiping out members of his own race
Yes, this was the whole point of the story... To show that Davros had designed a life support vehicle, in which the octopus creature could live, with a very advanced ray gun for defensive purposes...
The Doctor might well have been the very-first extermination, had it not been for Ronson's interference. Just a pity that Ronson appears to pay for that in this scene, in addition to being wrongly framed for Davros' own act of treachery
Why didn't Ronson try running for cover? It might not have worked, but it would certainly have given him a better chance of survival than just standing around waving his arms!
I'd have run to, even knowing I'd likely die either way (rather go out in a futile attempt at saving my life than stand there and wet myself like Ronson) but probably his mind was rapidly breaking and what was left of it thought a desperate plea was his only chance.
