Isn't it fantastic? I've listened to this song so many times... one piece of information from Richard (father was a policeman involved in evicting squatters) and the song's meaning opens up.. thank you so much. What an amazing song... I'm such a fan of Richard's steam-pressed 1969 output 😜
So, is just playing one guitar.?After 40 or so years I have managed 3 voices in a song, but RL plays three voices on three invisible guitars at the same time.
" "Genesis Hall" was an abandoned hotel in London's Drury Lane, originally the Bell Hotel. It had been occupied by hippie squatters. The London police had evicted the squatters, and eventually caused the building to be razed. Thompson's father was a member of the London police force at the time, and the lyrics refer to the incident. "
песня конечно узнаваема , но слишком оригинально исполнена !! а в целом красиво , хотя раннее творчество мне как-то ближе ( шестидесятые были чудесны )
Touches my heart very deeply. Too close to home for someone who's never felt at home anywhere.
Tears and the first fairport albums coming back to me
Not dated at all!!!!!
RT is incredible, as always. So underrated, but loved by other musicians and songwriters. He’s a national treasure.
transnational - he's a world heritage site!
Just had to hear this - this version - tonight. Notes like jewels, a voice that enchants.
Absolutely gorgeous playing by Richard, as usual.
I finally understand this song some. Thanks, Paul.

Aye
How can you be this good?❤
Oh my god, Ive never heard his voice before. Its beautiful.
Where have you been?
Richard Thompson : a genius !
Loudon Wainwright and Suzanne Vega are thinking "Shit, why did I agree to appear with Richard Thompson?"
:)) I thought the same
yep
Oh...not so sure...they are excellent songwriters in their own right.
great live version of this in 2018 on the Old Grey whistle test 30 year anniversary programme (BBC4 23/02/18)
Belíssima milonga! Só faltou nascer no Rio Grande! Mas estás perdoado índio velho!
Beautiful song
Superb. Simon Nicol sings this very well with a lot of passion but no-one can match the great RT singing the song he wrote himself.

Proof of extra terrestrial life.
nice upload, thanks
You can feel the audience waving of emotion when the voice comes in
che emozione! :')
I always wondered what this song was about...

I knew nothing of the song's background until the 1980s.
2:14 WOW!!!
A tuner, that works on vibration of the head,
What is the electronic device red/green on the head of his guitar?
It''s a tuner. Tells him if the guitar is in or out of tune.
Damn fine.....
The only version i find better is when linda thompson is singing this song, and richard is playing.
Linda wasn't in Fairport Convention. This song pre-dates their relationship by some years.
@@AQuags - yes, it is no doubt Sandy Denny's voice that he remembers although it is possible that Linda and Richard did a version sometime, somewhere!
We are not worthy!
Peter D, that's a tuner.
I love Sandy Denny, but of all Fairport Convention's songs, this particular one lends itself better to Richard Thompson's voice.

Sorry to all you RT fans but I feel that there is simply no one BUT NO ONE worthy of singing this song after hearing Sandy Denny's beautiful rendition
"equal but different " imo
песня конечно узнаваема , но слишком оригинально исполнена !! а в целом красиво , хотя раннее творчество мне как-то ближе ( шестидесятые были чудесны )
have a listen to VICTORIAN DAD >>> lots of influence fron RT! x vd x
Imagine Sandy Denny singing this version
Don't have to, check out Fairport album 'Unhalfbricking'
i think he means accompanied only by RTs acoustic guitar
Wizardry
In the ikd dazys zyou’s hear it with Sandy‘ svocals
The stratosphere is too low for this.
