Amazingly soft speach! I would suggest this video as an English practice video! I am thinking of making this video to looped sleeping aid. It is somehow so peaceful!
Haha thank you! I do get a few comments on my voice but I swear I don't sound like that in real life, just on camera 😛 Maybe I have a yet to be discovered career in recording sleep stories!
After puncturing an inflatable mattress while desert camping, I decided to go back to my Z-lite. I agree with you, closed cell foam pads like these (Thermarest Z-lite, Alps Wilderness, Nemo Switchback) are the best pads for backpacking/camping. I would recommend not cutting your pad, however. On very cold ground, you will want the insulation for your feet and calves.
Thanks! We have Thermarests for the family but my husband is used to sleeping on a plain yoga mat. Since we will be doing more camping in the Fall, I wanted to surprise him with this! Thanks for the review!
I bought this last year because of all the positive reviews, and I must say, this pad isn't for me. I'm a larger fella and felt like there just wasn't enough cushion, for being a side sleeper. It ended up going to my nephew for boy scouts. Thermarest Neoair x-therm, ended up being my true love! :)
Other side sleepers may find your comment interesting! I have always been intrigued by the Neoair, it seams to be popping up more and more. Maybe one day ill be converted 😛
Everyone is really into air mattresses now, but when I read the reviews on Amazon, there are always 2 or 3 that talk about air leaks they can't find. The furthest I would go is get a light one to put on top of it. Haven't done it yet. I have a dog with sharp claws.
Great review. I feel most of the mat reviews I have watched up until now were by older, heavier male reviewers perhaps with a bigger budget for expensive inflatable mats plus replacing them when they pop! Your review provides a welcome balance to all of that.
I am Canadian and i use this sleeping pad the same way although i strap it to my pack differently it really can take years of use as you need to deliberately attempt to destroy it to cause damage
Tx for presenting it... I never considered getting it but now I am tempted to get it. The R~2.6 would be fine even for 0°C and "no panic" when the "thorny" floor... ;)
Great review :). My late grandfather had one of these so I was thinking to myself “hey, let’s give it a shot”, but all I could find were reviews about how uncomfortable they are. It’s nice to have found someone who agrees with the old legend! I’m going to try it out - I nap on the floor at home sometimes with my dog so I think this will do fine :). Thanks again!
I dont have the thermarest one, but I got pretty much the same thing, just ozark trail brand. After constant patching and still having my pad deflate I said screw it and tossed the air(less) pad and picked up closed cell foam... first week was bad sleep but once I adjusted to the change I never looked back.
Pack size could be important if you are trying to get your rucksack on a plane as hand luggage, without paying the extra luggage charge :-). Air mattresses pack down to nothing, but personally, I don't like them as have had two get punctures when out camping - a real pain. Useful review. Thanks.
I have that pad as well. I mostly use it under my sleeping pad to protect it and for a sit pad. I cut it down to 3/4 length. Great video. New follower here. Crow✌️
Im considering either an inflatable or this one. Great points raised. My concern is the space (I really dont like my stuff "packed" outside my bag). But packing this in the middle opened like a book can be workable way of doing it.
Great review. Something for me to think about. Was considering a blow up mattress to save space but i think the trade off with reliability is worth it.
I have thought about getting one of these egg crate style pads. I have an inflatable one now and am looking for something a little more bullet proof. Thanks for the review and have fun outside!!
@@settohike I actually did, it was the Ozark trail/Walmart made version of it and it’s surprisingly comfortable with just it and my bag on the hard GA ground. The real test will be how well it helps hold heat during Bear season this year in the cold. Been a great buy so far. Thanks for replying!!😁🍀
Good review. I wish I could use it, but at age 58 with osteoarthritis my back needs more cushion. I use a lightweight inflatable pad. However, I do use the seat pad version of this sleep pad. I find it to be a very useful item in my backpack and bike panniers.
Thank you 🙂That is a shame! I have always been tempted to try out an inflatable pad - one day! I sometimes take it off my pack for a seat when I stop for a break, very comfy as a seat haha
Would you ever use that with a lite inflatable on top? Are you a back, side or stomach sleeper? I do use one for winter but cannot give up my new Neoair NXT. Lol
You are very cute lol. Great review. I love the durability factor most about these but exactly like you said, they're arguably bulky. I honestly prefer to pack as light as I can because I have a bad back and am starting to think maybe a repair kit and a deflatable compressible mattress might suit me more. But I also think it'll basically bite me in the ass when my mattress deflates on me and I get uncomfortable, then upset. I had also planned on cutting one of these down to suit my Mont Hibernator Bivy if I did get one. But still the bulk factor kills me. Yeah the more I think of it the more I think of a Thermorest X-Lite which has an R-value of 4.2. It's just the x-lite is so expensive, and supposedly one of the highest quality air mattresses you can get, but still I've heard in reviews that they can leak pretty much brand new out of the box. It's also for military service so the puncture/repair kit factor is pretty important considering it's expectedly going to have to stand up to a drenched damp cold trench. But that's likely for only a short part of the season. I was going to get the Neo Air X-Therm but I think that's more for literal mountaineering. Sorry for the essay lol I'm just trying to weigh my options by typing it out.
i just got a nemo switchback pad and tried it on my hardwood floor and it felt not to bad for comfort even turning on my side it felt OK i might switch to using that for backpacking
It’s a tough one! Much easier if you could borrow one for a night to find out! In non hiking life I tend to like harder mattresses than softer. I also tend to roll around a lot so I don’t notice the ground on any particular side during the night. I would imagine an air mattress to be more comfy if you compared the two but depends on how much comfort is good enough. Not sure if those points help haha
Thanks Hayley. Obviously you sleep on your back and find this mat comfortable. How would I go - I sleep on my side? I have boney hips that need a bit of support.
I think if you shift constantly to both sides it could still work, but if you mostly stay in the same position the whole night you might feel your bones a bit too much! I tend to shift a lot from my sides to front and back so thats why it works out for me :)
Just bought one of these. Love it!!! And I've not even taken it out yet lol. What's the coldest temp you've used this in? As a caveat... I'm predominantly a Hammock camper. I have a 4 season mat as well. But was hoping I could find a way of using this all year round? Thanks in advance. Great video BTW.
Haha yay! Im sure you have used it now by the time it took me to reply to this comment! I hope you are liking it! I think -2 degrees celcius has been the coldest ive used it. I had my thermals/sleeping bag liner/good sleeping bag so with that I dont remember being cold.
@@settohike Unfortunately, it didn't work as well in the Hammock as I'd hoped. But, it's still a good bit of kit I'll use for ground camping if the occasion arises. 😉
I’ve got my zlite can’t wait to use it all n the west highland way in a couple of weeks. I bought a roll mat to go under it but I think judging by what I’ve read online I might not need that as the zlite might be sufficient. What’s your thought on that have you tried it on top of anything and have you had any issues feeling the cold on winter snowy nights? Greetings from the UK and thanks for the video :)
I think from memory the coldest night I have used my zlite on was -2 degrees. With my thermals and my cosy sleeping bag. The zlite still worked a treat! I think if it were to start to get colder or if there was snow underneath then you might have issues with feeling the cold! The only proper snow hiking i've done, I was lucky enough to score a space in the hut for the nights so the zlite never went on the ground for that trip! I hope your trip went great! 😀
I reckon your right!! I think it's changed since I posted this video (or at least the websites have updated their information) because I can see the thermarest site now says 2. 😮
haha update, the cheapest I can now find the z-lite for is about $80! Getting there! The inflatables vary from about $100-$400. When you start looking towards the ultralight side it definitely gets close to $400. I guess unfortunately our demand is just not there.
@@settohike that's really unfortunate. You might save money by taking a flight to the states and buying all your gear at once! Although more affordable backpacking gear might be the only reason to visit the states right about now..

Hello thanks for the review. I wonder can it be used for sick patients (can't move) to help ventilate air underneath them while lying the whole day? Thanks PS: please google iMedicare iAM-8P (just for example of what I'm asking)
hmm in theory it is meant to help trap your body heat which might be the opposite of ventilation? Even though it does look quite similar to your example. But I don't know anything about the medical field so I am not sure, sorry!
