I think magic is viable at first I also thought it was terrible but I have videos of me using magic and explaining tactics and things you can do to better your use of casings further backing his point
"Mages are viable in PvP" -all spells miss except the occasional farron flashsword and 2 soul spears connected with target ----the two times out of like 30 someone DID get hit by SS, they did bad and they should feel bad -damage is almost exclusively done with MLGS ----MLGS unique moves used rarely ----Therefore interchangeable with any Str greatsword ----Buffing another GS with any element would surpass MLGS -arrows could have accomplished the same zoning your spells did ----use up 1/5 the points of a build Conclusion: Sorcery is only used for zoning. Not worth the points necessary to specialize. That's not so say your build sucks. I'm saying you could objectively win more while maintaining your playstyle if you just attuned farron flashsword and a weapon buff, then pumped those free points into str or dex.
What mages need is as follows. 20-30% Faster Projectile speed (( This goes for miracles and hexes aswell, and arrows too im my opinion )) The melee spells, such as great magic sword and flashsword, needs to be MUCH stronger, hitting someone with a +10 court sorc staff flash sword, and seeing 110-160 damage show up on your screen is an fucking insult, it needs to be well over 200. Depending on the armor ofc, Also these spells need to come out swinging much faster, i recomend removing the cast time all togather, the attack costs FP for fucks sake, and it takes TIME to charge and then swing, way too easy to dodge, not to mention the fact that it does low damage. Now the dark hex sword you can summon does decent damage, not gonna lie, but it also needs to come out swinging faster, they are simply too easy to dodge, only a idiot would get hit by them tbh. The ONLY time ive ever hit someone with flashsword or hex sword or greatsword, has been at the end of a enemy player roll, AKA Roll punish. Now miracles are just sad, it really is just flat out sad, the offensive skills need MASSIVE boosts, Wrath of god does decent damage, but everything else does PISS damage even versus a person with no god damn armor. So yeah, From, please fix magic and POISE. plz
I've a INT build too, the sad thing is that ur video shows exactly what's the problem with this kind of build. Most of the time, u get kills with your melee weapon, not with spells. Without animation canc, with slow animations and without tracking, magic is almost useless. While you're thinking of a clever strategy to land a hit, while you're thinking on how to rotate spells to play mind tricks and how to space your opponent, u get smashed by a R1 spammer. I think the only real thing to do is to bring back animation cancelling. With that, magic would be more viable. Also, i suggest to use affinity over Homing CS, better tracking and at least u force a roll or two. ;)
The only viability I saw here was taking advantage of the crown dusk ring to add damage to your melee sorcery and moonlight greatsword. Your other spells barely connected, if at all. Not to say its is viable, just not as much as this I believe you would think. Magic dam is fine, the tracking seems to be the only problem here. Its like that in PVE as well. Matter of fact magic is very powerful in PVE.
What's with the spoilers in a video titled PVP-Mages Are (trying to keep a strait face) Viable. Come on, most your damage was done from Melee. And the few big spells you got were probably on people that never came across a mage, (because no one uses them in PVP) so they don't know when to roll. Most spells can simply be side-stepped. Not hating on you dude you're doing the best you can with what you have. I like magic, I'm on the Make Magic Great Again campaign (we've got t-shirts & bumper stickers). But, the tracking sucks, the speed sucks, and it just doesn't hit as hard as it use to. Not to mention the the ring slots just to get decent damage, the 120meta that kills your other stats for more FP, split estus ... damn the list can go on but I'll stop. FromSoftware will patch magic and on that day make the Mages Are Viable 2.0 video of you slaughtering fools. If you're doing well now I hope I don't invade you after the patch ;p
I think magic to be viable I've tested with it a lot and even made commentaries to try to prove to the community that it isn't so bad but I agree the tracking needs some help
+madafaka420 i mean don't get me wrong the video is nicely made, pvp was good. but you can't say mages are viable when 90% of your damage comes from your sword.
you could use some curved sword in off-hand and it will be the same ... you just showed how bad sorceries are .... try to use it without greatsword ... staff+shield only ...and the think of roatating spells ... if u have to rotate spells to be efective its bad compared to single weapon builds , in this game less spells mean better build , yay .... try to use 2 or 3 magic types in 1 build = imposible ... playing pure faith =imposible ... playing pure int =almost imposible , hybrid can be used for trolling (fakecaster that switches staff for parry, or sniping with soul ray) ... the only magic type thats decent is pyro
Hi! I just want to say a cuple of things. First of all, i don´t understand that intro, or why you don´t warning about the spoiler anywhere. Second, sadly most of the dmg dealt comes from the Sword. But a lot of the hits are caused by oportunities during the post-casting events, or mistakes that where made by your oponents at that moment. but god video. Cheers
+Sanya Bennett Thats like saying using one of the greatswords that requires a slightly higher than average faith amount to use is a faith build. If the video was titled "Magic isn't underpowered" or "Int isn't underpowered" it would be fine. But it clearly says mage and he primarily used close range magic to begin with except for the very rare crystal soul spear.
+MrRalastial Because my video title says mage, and we happen to have a slightly different version of what a mage is, that is what upsets you? Why wouldn't a mage use a magic based weapon? It's just another tool in a mages tool belt dude, it's not like I am cheating by using magic weapons for a build using magic.
+Clayton Wilson Exactly, why wouldn't I use an INT based weapon, that does magic damage, on my mage... It wouldn't make sense to hinder myself on a build that takes a lot more effort to win on than my strength build. Not saying that taking more effort to win is bad, just that it's a harder build to play, which is why everyone shits on it.
+Eddie Henley Sorry I didn't use no melee but that would be stupid, it's not a pure mage, just a mage. And of course I would use the Moonlight greatsword melee with the mage build to make up for any other shortcomings of magic, that's what a good build does, utilize tools that are given to it.
+Eddie Henley sorry I have to disagree with you on that because I can easly destroy anyone I fight with my magic build that's almost pure magic just a crystal estoc just incase I need it
+Crucien Please explain how using a weapon that scales almost exclusively off of INT and does magic damage, is not part of a mage build. All it is, is another tool for the mage to use.
Ive been getting pretty good results with just Great farron dart, flash sword, and soul, on 50 int. Dont sleep on great farron dart, low damage (80-95 per hit), but passable tracking and speed. The darts bait you opponent in, but your opponent cant bait you with empty attacks, or they get chipped out with the darts, especially slower weapons. flash sword beats out r1 spammers, and good for mix ups. Soul greatsword is awesome for catching people on rolls. I also use moonlight greatsword, but I get a lot of wins still with the sword on my back two handing the catalyst, using it as a last resort.
Lol at soul mass aiming for audience. I think the title is a little misleading. It just says "mages." I think this is more an intelligence melee build but not really a pure caster. I think only pyromancies at the moment can handle its own by being pure caster.
Loving the title of this video in comparison to what it represents. The community has a problem with spells in general. They tweaked the hit boxes to be so precise that the majority of spells are simply too easily sidestepped, or what does hit does pathetic damage. I enjoyed spells*(pyromancies & sorceries mainly) for PvE, but they're nigh useless for PvP in general. This video isn't making a statement we don't know, it's reinforcing just how bad magic is in PvP. Of course a hybrid build is gonna be viable, it's not straight magic. And I, at least personally, find the Moonlight to be a pretty decent weapon overall.
It may be good to increase the damage of spells on enemies, or make being a mage more useful at the start. Increasing cast speed a bit may be good too since most non-homing attacks can be almost walked away from to be avoided. That being said, it seems like people are making out pure mage or pure faith builds to be stronger than they actually were. I don't remember ever getting one shot by a crystal soul spear with the right stay investments for the meta, nor do I recall spells being so fast to cast and move that they were truly difficult to avoid unless I had let the mage prepare. If you knew the I-frames for rolls and when to spell-parry, a mage really had to plan out when to use a spell and if you closed in and had fast weapons or attacks, they couldn't cast anything in time that isn't predictable enough to be avoided.
I do have to say though that below Intelligence lvl 60 most magic is really low on the damage scale. From a lore standpoint if the power of magic is based primarily on your own strengths and practice then a spell shouldn't do much damage when you're starting out. A blade however is mostly as effective as it's design is combined with strength and practice so it naturally would be better at first compared to a spell or a caster casting a spell. However that damage nerf for mages is a bit too much and it probably discourages allot of new players from using magic, the casting speed also has too low of a cap, a powerful spell at range should be able to come out fast enough to be considered as dangerous as a heavy attack from a heavy weapon in close quarters.
But, just to emphasize, we shouldn't have or expect crystal souls spears that one-shot or half health players who don't dodge at the last second because of how fast the cast time is or how fast it moves or how well it homes in. That kind of implement would be ridiculous and would not make the skill based gameplay of this game (disregard Havel Great-shields in 1v1s, THOSE are horrible) balanced. Mages who actually can one-shot (as well as any Strength/Dex player) a player with reasonable stat investments for pvp meta are way too strong unless that one-shot is really hard to land or predictable, and if the current strongest magic attack can one-shot but is hard to hit with or/and is predictable then that spell fair and balanced.
And if it was TL so you DR then: buff magic but don't make it as OP as some people say it should be. Either increase early damage a bit, increase cast speed a bit or make the starting mage class have more intelligence and a higher starting level at the least.
+Zach Mercer I couldn't agree more with all you've said. The spells already have a cast time wich, reduced to max, will always be longer than any weapon attack setup except maybe GS and UGS. And you already have to sacrifice health and equip load for attunement and scaling. Victory as a mage should come from playing mind games and choosing the right spell for the right situation but as it is now there's less than a handful of spells with which you have a decent chance to hit your opponent that it's not possible. Actually with my spellsword char at SL 115 with 30att and darkmoon ring I have only Dark Edge and Soul GS in use, remaining slots are for pyromancies which are more viable. Hell, with 45int/20fth, max upgraded Izalith staff and pyro flame I do the same damage with dark edge and dark orb, except one has an actual hitbox, better range and faster cast time. And let's not talk about Great Chaos Fireball, same damage but can hit a second time for 1.5x more damage plus actually have an impact on creating space and setup :/ The equivalent with sorceries would be Pestilent Mercury but it does so little that anyone can tank the damage to R1 spam your sorry ass.
Exactly and good example there. Spells just need that little boost to damage and speed to be as good as pyromancies but nothing overpowering. As with any duel where both people are skilled, a victory should come from knowing when, how, where to attack and how well you use mind games and mix ups, and if you lose then it should be because you made a mistake or were hit by an attack(s) that at least at some point was reasonably avoidable.
i believe magic in ds3 is right where it needs to be; has always been my favorite build. not because its op or underpowered. because its a different style of play than the usual hack and slash combat
Magic has always been about mixing up spells and timing. I got good mileage from mixing up attack with my rapier and flashsword, then using a ranged spell to punish sipping.
No, I dont think mages are actually viable. In ds1 they were actually viable. Here you are viable if you have a good magic based sword. But honestly look at the spells, Crystal Rain looks so good but the pathing and speed is so dog shit you can't hit jack shit vs someone unless they are basically retarded. Farron Flashsword is okay, yet the dmg is garbage. Soul Greatsword is yet again way too slow. Magic is a bit dissapointing to me in ds3 sadly. On the other hand, if you actually make it work more or less i'll respect you for your skill.
at first I thought mages suckd as well but with a lot of testing I think they are viable and I agree with him I have videos with me using a sorcerer and further backing his point
Rofl.. Okay I got to about 5:40 before it got pretty boring. Here is magic summed up: "mages aren't underpowered!"- you pretty much only landed one spell - Farron Flashsword. Every otherspell missed or was completely ineffective. Crystal hail, seriously. If through some miracle it did ever hit someone it would hardly do any damage. Yes, magic is awful, except for flashsword.
+Progeny of Europe Actually I vouch for magic Crystal mass takes 50-70% of hp on Average never less than that unless against another mage without headgear but its not about damage its for stuns for a followup finisher. CSS can one shot easily but combo'ed with homing. Crystal hail I underestimated. I assumed what others was saying that it was bad and saw a video of it being bad however I used it because I was bored and man I was wrong. 2 hits from it takes 1/4 hp from 1 cast and has a little tracking on the outer perimeter of its range I triple killed invader with it by spamming it. I use it the same way people used it in Ds2
+Progeny of Europe It doesn't help that he isn't really using any good combos or spells. Farron Flashsword? That thing hits like a wet noodle. Not only that but he openly tries to use magic greatsword without trying to roll fish first. Honestly the best magic currently available is the crystal mass, crystal soul arrow, great farron arrow(for roll fishing), pestilent mercury(for spacing and vision obscuring), and soul stream if you can manage to land it. Ive done some testing on various magic builds and tends to lean towards spells hitting for upwards of 700 dmg on most players.
MrRalastial Flashsword is amazing I made a heavy armor (OP passive hp regen that can be buffed further) miracle/sorc templar using crystal chime. physical back up weapon but your main weapon is flashsword beat the game with this set and in pvp its a little hax. 35/35 faith/int and I was hitting slightly harder than 60 int buffed crystal staff. Why? idk... wear all sorc gear 90% boost to magic style sorceries you'll see the power. Now i'll say farron arrow I've yet to see even decent damage with it. You get good damage or you use it for pokes. so far a single poke from crystal hail does more but idk.
In nearly every fight of this video u did all ur dmg with ur sword. U did zero dmg with the magic itself^^. Mages atleast in pvp are not viable right now and u have proven that with that video :D. Good video but it doesnt serve the purpose u intended
Seems like farron flashsword was the only thing worth a damn. Otherwise, you got some nice pvp skills. Despite your view, I think magic still definitely needs a buff. It would make a build like this seriously strong.
+Christian Dunnett that, and crystal soul spear netted him a few kills(mostly because it can't be blocked) but yeah, can't really say magic is 'viable' when he had to end every fight with the moonlight greatsword anyway.
Really nice vid and pvp. I mean you did say MAGE not, CASTOR or PURE CASTOR. I have a very similar build, it's quite fun I must say. Keep up the good work ^.^
+Cirillian caster* But yeah, this video if anything shows that spells still need a buff. Mage build *can* be used with Farron FS or MLGS but the amount of spells whiffed are astronomical.
Saiyerdon is it caster? Ive always know it as castor. Yeah obviously spells need a buff but if you're running a mage with utility spells it is somewhat viable. At least he makes a harder to win with build work for him, unlike fightingcowboy who uses shit builds and efficiency and with his "op" all he does is rolling l1.
Cirillian Yes, it is XD but yeah I feel they need to give a small degree of tracking to those spells like Soul Spear to make them more viable. I'm sure someone could counter any slow castings by bumping their cast speeds, so that's likely fine. But yep, I've seen so many people using shit like the Gotthard Twinswords and they do nothing other than stack the Leo Ring and do rolling R1s.
The problem comes in when people expect magic to work out like it did in Dark Souls 2 pvp. Say what you like, sorcery/pyromancy/hexing took absolutely no effort in Dark Souls 2. I wouldn't mind a cast speed buff as someone else in the comments suggested, it would help for connecting combos between casts. What I don't want is the infinite tracking 1-2 shot builds that were all over the Iron Bridge to be in this game.
+Zob Dznts Isnt watching the video in general spoiling yourself? You now know what some of the rings are, that there is Ash Estus and FP, Crown of Dusk and MoonlightGS are back, the usual pvp area, some of the spells, ect.
+Shiverskill im not talking about gameplay spoilers. The intro has a cutscene from a secret storyline that I havent done myself despite already having 200+ hours on just pvp.
Im saying that spoilers are guaranteed just from clicking on the video. If you dont want any chance of spoilers in any fashion then you shouldnt have clicked the video.
+Shiverskill While you are correct, the cutscenes in the beginning served no purpose. They had no place in a video titled "Dark Souls 3 PVP" in the first place.
+Shiverskill I clicked "Dark Souls 3 PVP - Mages Are Viable" not "Dark Souls 3 Anri of Astora dark lord ending storyline guide" pretty shit argument you got there, fukwit. I honestly can't see any reason why that cutscene needs to be there, or why I should expect something like that in a pvp montage.
Lol, can't tell if this is a troll video or not... But the video clearly shows that mages are not viable. You could've made the fights so much easier and faster if you didn't cast all those spells that you missed anyway. Just walk up to them and fight. Really, which spells did you hit them with? Farron Flashsword? You could've done the same thing with a normal sword without wasting points in INTELLIGENCE and ATTUNEMENT. You could've bumped up your other stats and delivered much more damage.
for your rings, you should have had equipped the magic clutch ring, its pretty good when combined with the crown of dusk and the bellowing dragon crest ring, I recommend it, plus the damage reduction is only 10%, so it's not much
good video, and I agree with your opinion I feel like people are just mad because magic doesn't one shot as much anymore, also I've played all the souls games and so far I feel like magic in this one is really good, you just have to plan what you're going to do and not just spam magic until you get the one hit kill you're looking for. But hey that's just me and my opinion so it doesn't matter really lol :P
You land hardly any actual hits with you magic, but I give you props for trying. Magic would be great if would actual track and that goes for all magic types.
+TheOhH3NRY my pleasure. I understand how difficult it is to make vids and have contents out. Unfortunately, sometimes what we like cannot please the crowd, too bad, Lol. Me, i enjoy watching you play right from your dks1 days. You have skills, dude. Keep it up.
+TheOhH3NRY it may sound old and cheesy. But man i missed the time when contributors and community supports each other and got excited to see even a crappy video shot by a digital camera mounted in front of TV, lol. We were soo excited just to see new content. Also, to think abt one of my most viewed vid was abt my first wins on pvp, which was certainly nowhere near the skill level presented here.
What a horseshit title, even that scrubby purple from 3-6 mins, eligible for "worst pvper ever in souls game", only got hit by flashsword. But then again the uploader didnt invest in faith or dex at all so its not even a sorcery based build, rather this is a greatsword build with some gimmicks.
honestly straight sorcery, or faith builds could be considered viable. but hex builds suffer since you also require a high attunement, and a high dex for casting speed. and doesn't scaling for magic really start to happen at 50?
Magic itself isn't really that bad...if you are a higher level. the problem with it is you NEED to have 60 int to do good damage with the worse tracking. They can fix magic as long as they fix the scaling and just add a little bit more tracking so you can't literally just walk sideways out of every spell.
I feel as if magic is alright for PvE (to which it was balanced for, as enemies get downed pretty fast on my Pyromancer), but for PvP it feels underdeveloped. It doesn't do enough damage to make it effective on players. Soul Spear should be dealing upwards of 500 damage regardless of any defense, Soul Masses should (and I believe they do?) hit for above 300 at least. The problem really isn't the damage, as players have a generally smaller HP pool than previous games anyway, but its near impossible to land hits with magic.
Im a pure mage always in Souls Games. When i played Bloodborne is dificult for me at start but after 10 hours the game is easy and always the same. In Demons Souls the mage is cool. You can play without shield (dagger+talisman/crescent falchion+catalyst(mana up) . In Dark Souls i need to play with armor and greatsword, you havent mana, and a few sorcerys, i dont like it but is the only possible mage. In Dark Souls 3 with mana and estus i use sorcery a lot of time, and only with weak enemy i use my Crystal LongSword +6 (350 dmg). I am level 75 with 59 INT. I am pure INT. 24 Vigor, 24 Attunement (for 4 slot), 10 Str for Brass Shield (faster stamina recovery like in DS). 7 END, 7 VIT, 12 DEX, 7 Faith. For Pve my mage is good. In the first levels you are nothing. You need to use a Rapier and a Robe, and the enemies are strong. But now if i see a big enemy i can use 2 sorceries and i kill him. I use invisivility to walk around. If you see a big enemy you can kill easy, for the others you can use your sword. I dont like the warrior mage like McKenzie. I have 7 end and 7 vit.
Henry. We all know that sorcery is a good support thing to use. However, the point of it being viable or not means the pure mage. Just like the pure pyromancer builds out there. You can't be effective being JUST a mage.
+Raphael Cardoso im just a mage. Level 75, 40 hours played. Im in the Dungeon after Anor Londo. I kill the Boss with Anri and my Boss too. If you want to kill all Boss solo, maybe the mage is not the best. In DS with my mage only the 4 kings are impossible. In DS3 there are more Boss difficult, but you can use NPC or multiplayer help. In Souls game you can run the game. I see a video where a mage get the Crown of dust from Farron. I dont run in my game, but you can. You dont need to kill Crystal Sage to get the Crown. How many Boss you need to kill? Only the first one (Ludex is a joke with a mage). You can get the great sorcerys from Farron too. Then after Vordt you can use the Crown and the Great Magic Arrows. I dont do it that thing, but you can do it because you can run only in this game. I want to finish the game with pure mage. With mana is better than DS1, when you use more your greatsword.
***** if you do PvP mage is a weak option but you can win sometimes. I win 50% of the invasions, maybe 60%. My Crystal longsword is very strong and I use Soul Greatsword.
That makes the moonlight greatsword viable, not magic viable. Moonlight might be magic based damage, but it's still melee and not spell focused. The farron greatsword is basically a longsword that used FP too. As demonstrated by the video, almost 90% of his damage comes from melee based spells or his moonlight GS.
that purple invaded shouldve just given up lol little by little he was getting rekt. he finally got a good combo later in the fight but that was really it. gg man
+Dark Cipher if you have it about 50 60 and use rings it packs a punch if your caught of guard they do need to improve the scaling though as strength or Dex at 30 is fine
+The Grand Wizard You shouldn't be leveling Int or Faith to 60 though considering a hex build is the quality build equivalent of mages. You should be dealing comparable damage and not have it so all 5 orbs from affinity can be easily outdamaged by a 1h straightsword R1,R1.
+Dark Cipher obviously it's annoying how much you actually have to invest to make it worth while but you can have a hybrid such as Dex or strength which is what I'd recommend have them as secondary not main if I use faith or magic it's just to buff my weapons or wrath of the gods to help my Dex build I can't stand having a pure build because there's no room for anything else
Do u understand that u actually run out of FP, casting all that spells that didnt land and u go with zero damage by actual MAGIC? And then u won by r1 moonlight sword. Thats not mage.
+Dzogrim Yes it is. The Moonlight is a Int Scaling weapon *Mostly* and Does mostly magic damage. The Farron Flashsword also does 100-200 per hit and is super quick.. Its a mage build and it works.
+Dzogrim A pure melee build uses slower and more predictable attacks to bait the enemies reaction and then punish them. This build is doing the same with magic. Homing Mass and spear rob the enemy of options since they have to dodge, Farron Flashsword deals quick damage when people are expecting slow MGS swings and when they get used to the MGS and the Flashsword timing there's still Soul Greatsword which adds yet another melee swing that's timed differently. The only spell I really dislike in this build is the hail. Great Farron Dart would be much more reliable poke since it has practically no casttime, a projectile speed comparable to throwing knives and more damage potential that the aforementioned knives. You can't expect a mage to go ONLY magic. That might be effective against new players but one people know that you're literally only casting they'll just stay close and the only thing they'll ever have to fea is flashsword since everything else is easily dodged. And tbh there never was a time when pure mages without a melee weapon were viable. Even in DS2 when people were whining about 1400 dmg hexes those were mostly new players that didn't know how to time their rolls. Once people got the hang of that even hexes turned into a joke.
I think sorcery is the only magic school that is fine in this game *i mean offensive spells*. Pyros only have like 2 useful direct damage spells which are sacred flame, even though its very predictable and slow, and free aimed great chaos fireballs that are kinda hard to land sometimes. Faith has only sunlight spear but is very predictable but can be used in mind games and same for lightning stake, the other spells are completely predictable and slow =/. * Crystal Shower sucks, not useful in any scenario even though sounds pretty cool ;-;
in the first four fights all of your damage is from your weapon. farron flashsword is same as a straight sword..all your spells miss. That's the problem with sorcery. Sure it can distract people fine.
just figure out a tricky mage build! go all out in something that's missing? Iv never used magics, but it seems as there should be a more deadly mix of spells!
mage is kinda under powerd as the stat investment for magic has raised to 60 you also need atunment and dex for slight cast speed buff the playstyle is not bad it just takes alot more lvls to get where you need to be comfortable in pvp and generally having small vigor vitality strength leeds to you having low resistances and easy two shot for your enemy while you try to crack off a few telegraphed spells imo the mage style needs more attention from the devs
+paul kavo 15 Dex and Sages Ring +2 gives you max casting speed. Needing 20+ ATT and 60 INT can definitely be a problem, since you can't pad your att slots with rings, due to needing 3 damage buff rings.
+al111uz Rather then a damage increase, maybe a projectile speed increase would work. The problem is anyone and there mother can learn to easily dodge and form of magic, so make them have to predict it. Pyro doesn't need a buff though, since it requires almost no stat allocation to be useful.
I thought I was gonna marry anri, and... like... give her the sword the way we give rings, she was lying there and I was like... uuhm... ok, sure. Then I stabbed her in the head ;-; DAMNIT YURIA
Nice set, but i would rec. using normal soulspear since its faster to shoot , u can punish alot of the meta weopens swordarts with it. Just the tipp :)
Yeah, I getcha. Magic has no place in PvP because it's impossible to hit with. In PvE, however, it is one of the best ranged options. Really makes me wish they fixed magic tracking.
When you say magic is viable... do you mean than farina flash sword is the only one thats arguably viable? because thats the only one you actually hit anyone with in this video... lol
+TVT o n s t o r Homing Crystal Soul Mass, Farron Flashsword, Soul Greatsword, Affinity, Great Magic Shield, Crystal Magic Weapon, and Crystal Hail are all very viable in PvP. Regular projectiles do tend to suck though, there are to easily dodged.
Jane Murphy obviouly buffs work because they aren't magic oriented they are melee- otherwise id disagree with things like hail because of this video lol- he never hit someone once... that being said I've never used it myself or seen someone else use it against me lol
TVT o n s t o r Have you tried it? Because it works out for me. Don't toss it out in the middle, just use it when they start closing distance, then they either back away, which gives you the initiative, or they roll, and you catch them with a Soul Greatsword.
"mages are viable"
*relies mostly on melee*
"mages are viable" *lands like, one or two magic hits*
"mages are viable" ~runs around with a greatsword.
Almost all of your kills and even damage come from your mgs. Magic actually seems to get in your way when a decently timed r1 could win the trade.
This video should have been titled moonlight greatsword is viable. Magic sucks. the sword doesn't.
I think magic is viable at first I also thought it was terrible but I have videos of me using magic and explaining tactics and things you can do to better your use of casings further backing his point
"Mages are viable in PvP"
-all spells miss except the occasional farron flashsword and 2 soul spears connected with target
----the two times out of like 30 someone DID get hit by SS, they did bad and they should feel bad
-damage is almost exclusively done with MLGS
----MLGS unique moves used rarely
----Therefore interchangeable with any Str greatsword
----Buffing another GS with any element would surpass MLGS
-arrows could have accomplished the same zoning your spells did
----use up 1/5 the points of a build
Conclusion: Sorcery is only used for zoning. Not worth the points necessary to specialize.
That's not so say your build sucks. I'm saying you could objectively win more while maintaining your playstyle if you just attuned farron flashsword and a weapon buff, then pumped those free points into str or dex.
What mages need is as follows.
20-30% Faster Projectile speed (( This goes for miracles and hexes aswell, and arrows too im my opinion ))
The melee spells, such as great magic sword and flashsword, needs to be MUCH stronger, hitting someone with a +10 court sorc staff flash sword, and seeing 110-160 damage show up on your screen is an fucking insult, it needs to be well over 200.
So yeah, From, please fix magic and POISE.
plz
is the title of the video ment to be sarcasm? cause if it is, good job = )
Also, i suggest to use affinity over Homing CS, better tracking and at least u force a roll or two. ;)
*pew pew pew pew pew pew* missed... missed... missed... missed............ fuck sorcery! MOONLIGHT GREATSWORD!!!
+PlasmaGlowZero Mage =/= Pure caster, but thanks for the input
*Has MLGS* *never uses R2 specials*
He meant to say the moonlight Greatsword is viable.
You kill people with the sword and cast mostly pointless spells. Mage FTW!
+Allen ty man all other oooh great vid .. magic is so great and viable .. the video just shows that it isnt
this video shows just that magic isnt viable cause u do the most dmage with the moonlight gs and the magic nearly never hits
Who said magic had to be used as a weapon? It could be used as a tool.
MLGS Is Viable*
Oh my god that mad phantom at 5:37 after using all his estus he attempts to crystal out lol
"mages are viable" -almost exclusively uses the moonlight GS- mhm so viable
90% of your damage was from the moonlight sword.
+mutzikatzi1 and the rest farron flashsword
Kaded Depar
Yep.
magic is pretty useless in pvp
And please, we need back animation cancelling. You need a way to reposition yourself against fast weapons and R1 spammers.
ye lemme just make a video "magic is viable" and ill basically go melee with a magic buff or something. same thing. pure magic is garbage.
"mages are viable" spends 5 minutes dancing around an enemey missing almost every spell...... sorry to kill your dream but they're really not...
Cheers
"magic isn't weak" uses greatsword that scales off of int.....
+Clayton Wilson which is made of magic and USES farron flashsword
+Clayton Wilson So are you saying Gandalf wasn't a mage? Because he used a sword.
no, melee/mage builds aren't underpowered, mage builds are though
+Eddie Henley Sorry I didn't use no melee but that would be stupid, it's not a pure mage, just a mage. And of course I would use the Moonlight greatsword melee with the mage build to make up for any other shortcomings of magic, that's what a good build does, utilize tools that are given to it.
+TheOhH3NRY eh not really. you aren't hitting any of your spells so you are only relying on your melee for kills. that is not mage
+TheOhH3NRY a tool I am agreeing with you. not the main source of your kills
I think only pyromancies at the moment can handle its own by being pure caster.
that ornstien katana guy has THE most obnoxious playstyle.
R1 ftw. And you can't be pure mage and still be viable pvp-threat anymore :(
Just the fact that mages can one shot you from half way across the map at 1500hp makes them awesome in my opinion. A little finicky, but awesome.
+Dragoon 321 it just too easy to dodge the spells though. full but hard to do good in pvp
As with any duel where both people are skilled, a victory should come from knowing when, how, where to attack and how well you use mind games and mix ups, and if you lose then it should be because you made a mistake or were hit by an attack(s) that at least at some point was reasonably avoidable.
good video man, I enjoyed it! spells are tough to use and I think you did a good job. I just subscribed. keep up the good work!
i believe magic in ds3 is right where it needs to be; has always been my favorite build. not because its op or underpowered. because its a different style of play than the usual hack and slash combat
Magic has always been about mixing up spells and timing. I got good mileage from mixing up attack with my rapier and flashsword, then using a ranged spell to punish sipping.
R1ing with moonlight greatsword is viable*
Nice video you just got the title wrong :(
my main issue with magic is cast speed being tied to dex and not attunment. also needing that fuck ugly hat for acceptable damage.
so souls spear has no tracking whatsoever?
Soul stream is incredibly powerful but if it's not a mage on a gank team he won't land the spells .
+Itchy Goober agreed mages are strong ganking but they can be viable in 1v1s
+Lastwill20 You missed the one 800dmg soul spear that connected of the dozen she casted :p
Nice video, man. (:
What's the name of the second song?
Seems like farron flashsword was the only thing worth a damn. Otherwise, you got some nice pvp skills.
Despite your view, I think magic still definitely needs a buff. It would make a build like this seriously strong.
+Christian Dunnett that, and crystal soul spear netted him a few kills(mostly because it can't be blocked) but yeah, can't really say magic is 'viable' when he had to end every fight with the moonlight greatsword anyway.
Very very well done.
Really nice vid and pvp. I mean you did say MAGE not, CASTOR or PURE CASTOR. I have a very similar build, it's quite fun I must say. Keep up the good work ^.^
+Cirillian caster*
But yeah, this video if anything shows that spells still need a buff.
But yep, I've seen so many people using shit like the Gotthard Twinswords and they do nothing other than stack the Leo Ring and do rolling R1s.
that purple phantom backstab and parry fishing like it's going out of style
The only bad thing about magic is the tracking.
+Spencer Caldwell Well, with how easy it is to roll in DS3 I doubt that some better tracking would be as OP as in DS2.
Whats up with the spoiler intro on a pvp montage?
Your video basically shows people sidestepping all your ranged spells and you only hitting with farron flashsword and the MLGS...
You could've bumped up your other stats and delivered much more damage.
for your rings, you should have had equipped the magic clutch ring, its pretty good when combined with the crown of dusk and the bellowing dragon crest ring, I recommend it, plus the damage reduction is only 10%, so it's not much
That mad phantom my god
So many kiddies mad that their favorite youtubers were wrong about magic.
The guy at 5:36 made me cringe so hard. "Oh, i cant beat him after i chugged all my estus, better black crystal!"
good video, and I agree with your opinion I feel like people are just mad because magic doesn't one shot as much anymore, also I've played all the souls games and so far I feel like magic in this one is really good, you just have to plan what you're going to do and not just spam magic until you get the one hit kill you're looking for. But hey that's just me and my opinion so it doesn't matter really lol :P
You land hardly any actual hits with you magic, but I give you props for trying. Magic would be great if would actual track and that goes for all magic types.
+MADMAN SLADE magic is amazing in this games
+MADMAN SLADE That is exactly how magic is in the Souls games, it doesn't hit often but when it does, it hits like a truck.
+TheOhH3NRY In previous souls game it had way better tracking
the only viable damage you were inflicting was from your sword lol
this video seems like... spam magic, mostly miss, use mlgs to actually do damage... doesnt really change my opinion on magic.
Nice, henry. I think ppl are disappointed because they don't get to see 1 shot dark bead to the face kill, lol.
+Eric Arianto It's nice to get some encouragement, Eric. Long time no see!
Why would he invest in faith?
Sarai HERNANDEZ with like 5 points in faith hed be able to cast 5-7 more, viable, spells
On another note, care to name the song used in the first few minutes of the video?
Themes on the background?
honestly straight sorcery, or faith builds could be considered viable. but hex builds suffer since you also require a high attunement, and a high dex for casting speed. and doesn't scaling for magic really start to happen at 50?
i think if they buffed the damage by 15% and made more spells track it would fix the problem.
Magic itself isn't really that bad...if you are a higher level. the problem with it is you NEED to have 60 int to do good damage with the worse tracking. They can fix magic as long as they fix the scaling and just add a little bit more tracking so you can't literally just walk sideways out of every spell.
spells just need a larger hit box and a bit more traking not mutch tho. loved the video! SUBBED
If you're really good with free aim, instead of spamming Farron Flashsword, I think Sorcery can be very good in PvP.
I have 7 end and 7 vit.
dislike for spoilers
As demonstrated by the video, almost 90% of his damage comes from melee based spells or his moonlight GS.
that purple invaded shouldve just given up lol little by little he was getting rekt. he finally got a good combo later in the fight but that was really it. gg man
i really dont get all the butthurt bout this video... its actually really good pvp. Are you really that mad he didnt use purely magic?
All castings in this game suck tremendously. They need a buff immediately; Tracking, speed and Damage-wise.
Damage is fine they just need more speed and better tracking
+The Grand Wizard Damage is trash, getting hit by all 5 orbs of affinity roughly deals 400 damage. Mind you i was using it on a 40/35
+Dark Cipher if you have it about 50 60 and use rings it packs a punch if your caught of guard they do need to improve the scaling though as strength or Dex at 30 is fine
Do u understand that u actually run out of FP, casting all that spells that didnt land
and u go with zero damage by actual MAGIC?
And then u won by r1 moonlight sword.
Thats not mage.
+Dzogrim
Yes it is. The Moonlight is a Int Scaling weapon *Mostly* and Does mostly magic damage. The Farron Flashsword also does 100-200 per hit and is super quick.. Its a mage build and it works.
+Dzogrim
A pure melee build uses slower and more predictable attacks to bait the enemies reaction and then punish them.
+Ledge Buoy you can parry farron flashsword, so it makes it even less useful.
What are your stats? It would be nice to see and compare with my semi-mage character.
+Bear Seek Seek Lest First 10 seconds of the video they are in there.
+TheOhH3NRY I don't know how I missed that
I just found a cool new band thanks to you!
+The Dj0ntening It's not a band, it's one guy. You should check out his videos on RUclips, they're hilarious.
+Kaleido Games I just started listening to some of his stuff. Try The Bass, is the one that stood out to me. I'm sure he's using a fake voice too.
The Dj0ntening haha yea, I'm pretty sure he's just goofing around. His music kicks complete ass though.
+Kaleido Games Yeah man, I'd never even heard of this guy before watching this video. Video is great BTW, but fuck, Ronald Jenkees lays it down.
I'm interested in making a Mage what is your build for this video
+Ryan Williams Shows it right at the start
Well I liked the video...I don't know about you people
I think sorcery is the only magic school that is fine in this game *i mean offensive spells*.
Pyros only have like 2 useful direct damage spells which are sacred flame, even though its very predictable and slow, and free aimed great chaos fireballs that are kinda hard to land sometimes.
Faith has only sunlight spear but is very predictable but can be used in mind games and same for lightning stake, the other spells are completely predictable and slow =/.
* Crystal Shower sucks, not useful in any scenario even though sounds pretty cool ;-;
in the first four fights all of your damage is from your weapon. farron flashsword is same as a straight sword..all your spells miss. That's the problem with sorcery. Sure it can distract people fine.
+Dillon Jagersky but making people dance around is how you get people into positions where you punish them
4:17 tried to parry the two handed greatsword but not the flashsword lol then tries to black crystal when he gets outplayed gold right there
just figure out a tricky mage build! go all out in something that's missing?
How to make the other half of the menu screen to disappear and show the character?
+Martin Manuel r3
Jose Gonzalez Thx man finally found it.
Best of 10 lets go, show me how good mages are pvp
lol right
Your video kind of shows how crappy mages are as a whole...
Anyone think that a flat % damage increase to all spells would be a viable 'fix'?
+al111uz magic does not need a fix at all I can easly 1 shot people at lvl 115
What about pyro and hexes?
pyro doesn't need it hexes I don't know
+DarkDay51 Fairs, thanks
+al111uz Rather then a damage increase, maybe a projectile speed increase would work.
The problem is anyone and there mother can learn to easily dodge and form of magic, so make them have to predict it.
Pyro doesn't need a buff though, since it requires almost no stat allocation to be useful.
I thought I was gonna marry anri, and... like... give her the sword the way we give rings, she was lying there and I was like... uuhm... ok, sure. Then I stabbed her in the head ;-; DAMNIT YURIA
+Damiaan Moors by the way, any possible link to the songs or a playlist? I really like the music. Or names.
Nice set, but i would rec. using normal soulspear since its faster to shoot , u can punish alot of the meta weopens swordarts with it. Just the tipp :)
Is this a joke? I see no dark swords
+Gabriel Bravo Dark Sword noob alert! :^y
StairFacts I meant the opponent was never using the most annoying and opular weapon in the game, so he never won against it
StairFacts Mening that mages aren't viable
Yeah, I getcha. Magic has no place in PvP because it's impossible to hit with. In PvE, however, it is one of the best ranged options. Really makes me wish they fixed magic tracking.
The only players who were hit by your spells were the bad ones.
When you say magic is viable... do you mean than farina flash sword is the only one thats arguably viable? because thats the only one you actually hit anyone with in this video... lol
+TVT o n s t o r
Homing Crystal Soul Mass, Farron Flashsword, Soul Greatsword, Affinity, Great Magic Shield, Crystal Magic Weapon, and Crystal Hail are all very viable in PvP.
TVT o n s t o r
Hail isn't for damage, it's for roll baiting. It leads well into a Soul Greatsword if you time it right.
Jane Murphy seems like a waste to me- and something that would only work on bad players lol
TVT o n s t o r
Have you tried it? Because it works out for me.
Don't toss it out in the middle, just use it when they start closing distance, then they either back away, which gives you the initiative, or they roll, and you catch them with a Soul Greatsword.
Cristal soul spear imposible to conect
oh Henry
They just need to half the FP cost on all spells and I'd be happy
You are no Mage at all.
+mgkpraesi Uses magic and the main stat isn't INT though?
+TheOhH3NRY You are lucky if you landed 1 spell.. that's not a mage thats an INT build
+Paladin Leeroy You heard it here first, the magic spell farron flash sword isn't a spell guys.
TheOhH3NRY Oh sorry the 50-90 damage that does is so effective i musta missed it
