  • Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, Op. 35a, a piece for string orchestra by Anton Arensky, started out as the slow movement of his String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 35. It was written in 1894, the year after the death of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, in a tribute to that composer. It was based on the theme from the song "Legend: Christ in His Garden", the fifth of Sixteen Children’s Songs, Op. 54.
Tchaikovsky's song was originally set to a Russian translation by Aleksey Pleshcheyev of an English poem called "Roses and Thorns" by the American poet Richard Henry Stoddard.
At the first performance of the quartet, the slow movement was so well received that Arensky soon arranged it as a separate piece for string orchestra, Op. 35a, in which form it has remained among the most popular of all Arensky’s works.
Arensky also made a version of the quartet for the unusual scoring of violin, viola and two cellos.
The Variations are set out in the following sequence:
    Theme, Moderato
Variation I, Un poco più mosso
    Variation II, Allegro non troppo
    Variation III, Andantino tranquillo
    Variation IV, Vivace
    Variation V, Andante
    Variation VI, Allegro con spirito
    Variation VII, Andante con moto
    Coda: Moderato.

Thank you for the music! I played viola in our (very talented) Jr High School/HS orchestra in 1965 Spring Concert. We played this piece. It was a hit. I picked up the viola again after 35 years and got back into it. It was like I never put it down. I love playing this piece on my viola along with this orchestra. The music is so familiar. So Beautiful. Thank you.

Genuinely heartbreaking and serene music, which also explores faster and rollicking music. i LOVE it

A simple work, yet genuine and full of love.
A heartfelt ‘elegy with variations’ to Tchaikovsky.

This is the sort of music which the great choreographer Balanchine would have found eminently suited for dance creation. ( Cf Theme and Variations )

I can only suppose that "Christ in His Garden" refers to the Garden of Gethsemane. We are to imagine the mental anguish of the struggle between "Father, take this cup from me" and "Thy will be done." What else could it mean, unless there is some extra-biblical tale about a garden, dreamed up much later on? Modal theme, reminiscent of a medieval carol.

      @gilbertevans7586 5 лет назад +3

Very good. You're right it is an extra-biblical poem ("Roses and Thorns" by William Henry Stoddard), which was translated into Russian by Alexei Plescheyev, and then arranged by Tchaikovsky, first as a song for solo voice, then as an a capella choral arrangement. Geoffrey Dearmer translated it back into English under the title "The crown of roses", which these days is most often heard as a carol at Christmas or at Easter. ruclips.net/video/agNMQ3FtwBk/видео.html
