- Straddling the boundary between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea's tragic decline due to misguided irrigation projects led to a loss of biodiversity, economic hardship, and health challenges for the local population.
As a part of our vision to use space tech to preserve life on Earth, we continue developing special stories of impact. This time, EOSDA delves into the multifaceted efforts to revive the Aral Sea, with a focus on the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) innovative Environmental Restoration of the Aral Sea (ERAS-I) project and the ways satellite monitoring can be an aid in tracking its progress.
By weaving together science, innovation, and human compassion, the restoration of the Aral Sea illuminates a path towards a harmonious and sustainable future, enriching the lives of generations to come and nurturing a legacy where nature and humanity thrive in unison.
Glad to see that attention has been given and actions are being taken to restore the Aral Sea.
It would be nice to see another dam of at least 15 feet above sea floor built in the span between the eastern island of old and the shores of the western Aral. This would separate the southern Aral . The excess water flow over the Kok Aral dam would then be used to slowly fill this new body. A central Aral Sea would be formed and eventually join the north Aral with the west Aral. While I’d hate to abandon the large south Aral, it would be a better use of water to join north and west Aral once again. The deeper water would evaporate less and if it does work as well as we saw in the north , then we turn our attention to the south Aral.
This dike would need to be nearly 30 km across. Nearly 2.5 times the size of the Kokaral project. Likely with 2 weirs/overflows. (If they ever see use )
This project would see eventually water levels north of the dam, similar to the 1996 satellite images. Of course south of the dam would remain dry.
Maybe we can undo the damage done by the communists and bring the sea back to life!
