Hahaha. Sick vid dude. Graduated CS last year. The last part about going through tough shit and surprising yourself of what you can overcome is good, and my advice is that it doesn't end once you grad :')
Intense modules even for TAs :( As PhD students, we have teaching duty. I would rather be a TA for 5k lv modules. Some of my friends who were TAs for 1-3k lv modules told me they spent a lot of time preparing teaching contents. Profs are also enthusiastic about teaching. That might be the reason for intense modules. Haha. And it also makes NUS computing probably the best in Asia :)
Life in SOC has never changed since 2004. Super senior here! Coding through the nights then till the morning. Breakfast (after 12 hours continuous coding) never tasted that good!
Actually... the ethics in the computing quite important. For example if you create a system but failed to convince the international authorities, you may not be able to launch your system. Is easy to create but harder to manage. Just like the tracetogether system.
Not downplaying the importance of ethics, just the whole execution of the module itself during my semester was pretty horrid, leaving us barely learning much at all. At least that was my experience 😀
Holy shit dude you stay in Sheares? I literally thought there is no CS senior in Sheares lol. How the hell are you able to juggle between CS assignments and hall commitment there? (Ask by someone who is probably getting kicked out uWu)
Hi, great video! May I ask is it recommended for someone who is not really good at coding but have a very basic understanding in coding (like java) to join CS?
in any case I have a lot of friends who had zero understanding of programming when they joined and they seem to be doing fine so far. If anything the most important is whether you have genuine interest or not :)
Matriculating this year n I’m really curious about this, is the competitiveness coming from peers or coming from the environment? Like are students competing with their friends or just trying to get better and better(than yourselves)? I feel like the first one is quite toxic but the second kind is more of a make-you-grow kinda stress. I’m really nervous and anxious about joining (to the point of thinking if I should turn down the offer :/
Different people will have different experiences. I felt that it was competitive and the people were competitive. But I didn't give a shit about how others were doing because it didn't really matter to me, I just needed my CAP to be good enough to graduate. Even if the first one might apply, I don't think it should bother you anyway because your only concern is yourself mah. If you're already in the mindset of competitiveness to better yourself, anything outside of that is just noise. Don't worry too much, you'll do fine, just like the many CS graduates that have passed through the course. The vast majority of students do not graduate with 1st class honours or 2nd upper for that matter.
Oh what the heck...I thought Students have time and energy but lack money. Working adults have money and energy but lack time. Elderly have money and time but lack energy. You NUS Computing students are extremely busy?
I meant for this video to be more about entertainment than anything so don't take it too seriously! There are a lot of positives about NUS CS that I haven't touched on as well. I think ultimately how your experience is like really boils down to how much passion you really have in CS as well as what you prioritise when you're here. Many students in NUS CS care about their grades quite a bit and as such that gives them an added pressure to consistently do well with lesser room for failure. This pressure to do well sometimes feed into those who aren't even that concerned with grades due to this competitive environment. The key is to really know what you're trying to achieve when you're here and don't work for something that's not really your goal. There's really a lot of value to be gained in NUS CS from the people, the environment and especially the opportunities provided to you by NUS. There's definitely going to be stress but as long as you know how to bounce back from failure and persevere (as well as genuinely having the passion) you'll be good :)
