Wonderful reaction from you both. This song is very impactful but the movie clips from Johnny Got His Gun were powerful. This is a book written in 1938 by Dalton Trumbo that I read in High School. the book is a very descriptive book that takes a bit of courage to read. It really impacted me since I was reading it during the Vietnam war as a teen. Something you don't ever forget.

I don't know if it was based on a real case, but I can tell you that there is a real case, but not the product of a war but of an accident at a nuclear plant, the case of Hisachi Ouchi, it is shocking to think that he wanted to put an end to your life, look for that case

During battle, a mortar shell hits very close to "Johnny" Joe Bonham, causing severe physical damage. He loses both legs, both arms, eyesight and hearing-nearly every physical bridge to the outside world-yet remains alive in an Army hospital with a hood covering his disfigured face. At first, Joe cannot determine whether he is asleep or awake, alive or dead.
This is Metallica's first ever music video. The scenes are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" Metallica bought the rights to the movie so they would not have to pay the royalties. My favorite line from the movie is when the general ask the padre "Don't you have some message for him padre?" and the padre answers "He's a product of your profession, not mine" What a great line.

This song is about a soldier in World War I who is injured by an artillery shell that destroys his arms, legs, sight, hearing, and ability to speak. He wishes he could die, but he can't. He eventually realizes that he can move his head around in Morse code to send a messages and asks for his life to be terminated. The movie scenes are from an antiwar movie that was based on a novel called Johnny Hot His Gun. The singer of Metallica, James Hetfield, actually bought the rights to the movie so they could continue to use it without paying royalties.

The message behind this song are very deep. The movie Johnny get your gun we had to see in highschool and the teacher asked us questions about it. That Metallica put peaces of the film in their music one is absolutely impressive.
Johnny Get Your Gun is a different movie from Johnny Got His Gun, which is the movie in the video.

I was in a coma in 2002. I will say this with personal knowledge. Everybody sees a lifeless and unresponsive body. I could hear everything being said around me. I heard my parents say goodbye, I heard my siblings say goodbye, my kids say goodbye...I heard my wife make my funeral arrangements at the side of my bed. I felt like I was in a shell, I could hear everything, I wanted to respond. In my mind, I was trying to wake up... trying to scream that I'm alive...but I couldn't. I won't bore you with my experience but...I was fortunate that I "woke up" as Dr. Alvarez was turning off my life support. This song brings me to tears.
This song is so powerful in the message AND their play. In live concert, it's simply incredible. Much appreciated to see your reactions to this song albeit a tough message with the song. It's one that hits the emotions from a possible true reality. Besides the intense message from them, It's one of those songs that you don't want to think too much and just simply appreciate the talents of the music! Otherwise...you know 😉You guys are great! The singing is the voice trapped inside the drums and bass are the machine gun fire and the rapid beating of his heart the guitar is pain pure pain a man never sleeping never waking trapped in endless pain... No face, no eyes, no nose, no mouth, no tongue nor vocal chords, no ears nor ear drums to hear, no legs, no arms all trapped in one body of pain. Metallica writes lyrics first then makes the music match the feeling of the owrds.
They have so many amazing songs and even whole albums that you shouldn't miss out on.
I was familiar with this song and had come across remixes of it before. Most notably a Star Craft remix with voiceovers added in from the game. I then came across this audio, from the official music video, but didn't know that that was where it was from and was marveling how well the spoken lines fit in to the song. It wasn't for about a year or so when my friend gave me a dvd for my birthday with all the metallic videos I learned why it for so well.
This Song is what brought Metallica to the "Mainstream". The video was played on MTV and the song, along with others from their catalogue started to get played on the radio. At every Metallica concert I have been to, this song is the encore and it is big. And Justice For All got them Gold, the Black Album got them Platinum.
He really can do anything that they want

There are scenes from a movie called Johnny Got his Gun. I've been told, the lead singer (James Hetfield) actually bought the rights to the movie so he could make the video.
this is what I've heard as well. Song was written after watching the movie, then bought the movie so they could use it in the video.
You should also listen to "Fade to Black". Epic song, almost 40 years, but never gets old

Metallica never did do any videos about any of their songs on the early days. This One is excepion from that era. You managed to find the most hated version where there is voice talking over the material. I like your reactions though. Thank youuu both.

Metallica songs are famous for transitioning tempo to correspond with the nature of the song. Notice as the patient became more frustrated, the pace became more intense to represent his frustration.... Also notice during that fast-paced part there were drum beats that sounded like machine gun fire.
These nuances should not be lost on the artistry of Metallica.

I had a surgery go wrong and spent 24hrs screaming in pain till I couldnt scream anymore and as my voice game out begged the nurses to kill me,,,I relive that night alot. Doctors are not Gods.

Metallica bought the rights to the movie so they wouldn't have to keep paying the copyright and royalties for using it in this every time,they own Johnny Get Your Gun.Also, another interesting price of info....my dad served in Vietnam and once told me they made his platoon watch that movie before they left for war to prepare the soldiers for the very real possibility that could happen to them if they weren't careful and stepped on a landmine.What a way to make a point huh??anyway,just thought you might like to know.✌out
