Kelvin Kiptum: Men’s marathon world record holder dies in car crash

- Kelvin Kiptum was the long-distance running champion who smashed the marathon world record last October.

But he has been killed, aged only 24, in a car crash in his native Kenya.
Kiptum was due to compete in the Paris Olympics later this year and would have been a favourite for a gold medal.
His rise to the peak of the sport had been incredibly fast - he only competed in his first full marathon in 2022.

Tragic loss. But even if the 2 hour competitive record is broken in the future, we all know Kiptum would have been able to achieve it first. RIP
This was such a tragic loss, not only for his family, but for the whole world.

The most shocking death of a legendary active (i.e. not Kobe Bryant) sportsman that I have ever experienced. I was still too young for Ayrton Senna. He was the Usain Bolt of marathon racing

Just realized this happened now as I mentioned how excited I was for this years Olympics to see Kipchoge vs Kiptum. Unreal and reminds me so much of Steve Prefontaine for what could have been if he was not taken too soon.

Yet when I heard the news on local radio it was nothing more than a footnote, 10 second news bulletin saying he had died in a car accident with his coach.
And then they spent 5 minutes talking football.
How appalling, that such talent and such tragedy was deemed unimportant on BBC Radio Suffolk.

When you are the fastest runner ever in human history and you have to drive a car that has no high safety standards and your sponsor is the biggest sports brand in the world.... It should never happened, i am sad and angry.
I drove passed the Flax Junction this morning, by African standards it's a good road. There are however, no crash barriers. If your wheels veer off the tarmac you will lose control. It's so sad that he was about a mile from home. It's so sad that he's not able to fulfil his capabilities. It's so sad for his family. The one consolation is that he knew his WR was ratified.

he was just at the beginning of his career. Very shocking and sad loss.
Just read an article about his father talking about all the things his son had promised to buy for him and now all of that is out the window. They only looked at him as a meal ticket.
Bold to judge them for it.
They live in a completely different world and maybe it was one of the factors on why this guy was so disciplined and fast. He wanted to take care of his family and get them out of their situation.

For me as a german also the suicide of Robert Enke only months before the World Cup 2010 where he would be the no1 goalkeeper *because adler was inhured) was a massive shock for the whole nation. Because of this Manuel Neuer was early in his career the number 1 in the World Cup 2010. RiP legend. Sadly the WR will not last long because of the shoes but he run only 3 marathons. He would have run under 2 hours in the future. Maybe even under 1:59.30 in Berlin

When i 1st heard about this, i didn't even think this was real, i thought maybe it was a joke or something, but then found out its real, so unbelievably shocking and sad.

Its sad. At least he got 2 children that can continue his legacy or a little brother from the same parent (They will have the same genetics). Even if this happen, we need to wait for like 20+ more years

his parents can't have another child. His father said the wife developed a medical condition that prevented having more children. But Kiptum married early so at 24 he left 2 children, one is about 6/7 years old@@HubunganEtnik-of2yn
