Hello, nice review thanks a bunch! My long story short about the air suspension issue. It happened to me and I brought the car to Audi dealer. They told me it costs me about €5000 to have it fixed. However I explained that the suspension works (lowers and raises when I press the buttons) also, I don’t get any error when the car is loaded with some significant weight. I didn’t do anything and the error disappeared by itself. Next happened again but this time I noticed there’s an option to activate the air suspension when you want to change a tyre! I did that and also raised the car on an elevator. I disabled the option when the car was back on wheels. Guess what folks? Error magically disappeared and never showed up again. It’s 3 months since this happened. I hope my comment will help some people to save some € if you own one of these beauties. Cheers
My Front Right Air Shock went out and I replaced BOTH for front units for less than $400.00, buying the parts from AliExpress. Took me a few hours, but it really wasn't that hard. Reality is that Audi Dealers MASSIVELY mark up the parts on these cars that THAT is what scares off buyers. Hell, I remember when I had my 2016 A6 and had to change the injection coils. Dealer wanted $1000. Local repair shop wanted $500.00. Bought all the parts from Amazon for LESS than $100.00 and did the work in about a half hour. Lasted about $60K miles before I had to change them again (which for me is about 2 years). I love Audi's because the used ones are CHEAP and they can be serviced by anyone with a brain and a few tools at VERY low prices. This is because they share MANY parts with VW and there's a HUGE aftermarket for them, ESPECIALLY in China where they were once KING of Lux cars.

Great video. Thank you very much. I own a 2011 Audi A8L and have expedited a few of the issues you mentioned in this video - specifically a coolant leak, air suspension failure due to a faulty front passenger side air shock, a broken control area, etc etc. After 150K miles and the mentioned repairs, the car still drives well.
I have the same car. It’s making this weird noise where it sounds like when of them old fashioned tea pots when the water is boiling. Do you know what that could be?
I have the Audi 2011 A8L and I bought it at 97,000 miles from the original driver in 2020. Was running awesome until early this year when it ran hot on me on the way to work one day - found out I had a leak. Thank God I got it to the mechanic within 10 minutes and the engine was not affected (according to the mechanic). After that I noticed that after I would run the car and park it for about 2 hours the car would struggle to start when I got back in it (say like I was at my sons football practice and then we leave) and I would have to pump the gas as I was starting it and then it would turn. My oil level was fine, all liquids are fine. Check engine light stays on and oil light too even though theirs no issues according to my mechanic. Sensors have been checked and they are fine. Suspension is fine too. Now that it's very cold in the mornings, the car starts up and I let it sit to warm up and it starts to shake and the EPC light pops on and blinks (check engine light still on and oil light on). The car feels like it's gonna die out but it doesn't. I drive my kids to school and when I stop at a red light, the car has a light shake- EPC light still on blinking, check engine light on. I make it to the school and shut the car off. I start it back up the EPC light is off, the check engine light stays on and the car rides smooth and damn near perfect. Whats up with that?!! I've had this car in the shop so many times. Has anyone ever had to deal with this with this particular model? What could be the issue? Any suggestions on what I could suggest to my certified Audi mechanic?
i have the exact same car. 2011 A8L. same problem as well, check engine light is on and my car stalls when i turn it on, the car starts up fine when it’s a cold start but after that i have to pump the gas as well to get it to start. my camera and sensors do not work and the check engine light always pops on even if you clear it, it will come on again when you start the car. it shakes and i have to rev or accelerate so it won’t shut off on me. i’ve taken mine to a lot of mechanics and they can’t seem to figure it out cause Audi’s are known for electrical problems. i don’t know if this helps but plug in a scanner, if it has the code “P2755” then that’s the problem. has something to do with the “transmission cooler control fluid circuit high” i’m taking my audi to the dealership for the 2nd time cause i found a recall describing the problems my car has and i’m going to make them fix it for free cause it says free of charge and recalls do not expire. hope this helps!
@@jtsgarage Wow thanks for your response. I thought I was going crazy because I would describe whats going on with the car to my husband and the mechanic and they would both not really understand or get it. When they would drive the car, suddenly theirs no problems and they weren't experiencing the same things I was experiencing. I will ask my mechanic about that code you mentioned and the recall that Audi has for the car- hopefully it helps because right now the sensors are still on (even though we replaced them a month ago - the check engine light finally shut off) and supposedly the mechanic took it to an Audi dealership and had them run scans but he didn't mention the recall. Right now the car is behaving after having it in the shop in December for about 3 weeks. I love this car so much, I get so many compliments because the last owner took care of it so great- the interior and exterior of the car is perfect and all of the bells and whistles work perfectly, its just the little annoying things that pop up from time to time with it that really stress me out. This is my third Audi. The best one I owned was a 2006 A6 Quattro wagon. The only thing that died on me in that car was the radio. I sold it and the new owner still sends me messages saying how happy he is with the purchase. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.
So what is that terrible reason you shouldnt buy it without warranty? Are those all issues that you can expect from A8? Because that was very short list, and non of those issues are deal breakers or extremely costly, most(all) non-luxury cars have bigger list of issues, this is nothing, literally every car have some specific problems.... thumb down from me for clickbait title written with capslock 🙄
Shocks on every car need to be replaced after 100k miles. My toyota's shocks went out after 30k miles so you really never know. It depends on if you hit that terrible pothole or not.
I own 2 D3 2007 V10 S8 and 2004 4.2 a8 with 546 000km and I can confidently say that bad mecanics makes 90% of the maintenance cost. Part swappers should not be allowed around these. People trust me to tell them what REALLY needs doing on the car to avoid costly part swappage
Well done. You did a good job presenting the nice features and the potential problems in a level headed manner. No fluff or distractions. So, if I understand correctly many problems have an Audi recall but the air suspension may cost $8,000 to repair and the timing chains, guides and tensioners may cost $4,000 to replace. But it would be a good ride for another 60,000 to 100,000 miles
My 2015 A8 has just come up with Emissions Control System warning light. After lengthy investigation it turned out to have a failed AdBlue pump and they are VERY expensive. However, otherwise it has been, and is, a terrific car and well worth the cost. Superb and I greatly recommend it, especially the diesel, which is very fast and very economical.
I have had coolant leaking onto the adblu injector, leading leaks to the AdBlu. Lucky I had extended warranty. Audi partially fixed the problem. I say partly because they just changed the Adblu hose/pipe and not the main problem. 6 months later the problem occurred again. They fixed the problem but still didn't fix the coolant system that had a leak. One year on, I still have leaking coolant. I just can't be bothered to leave the car with Audi because they will take at least 2 weeks to solve it. The 2 times they took the car took a combined 7 weeks.
@@imeprezime1069 for W221 and W222? I have heard complete opposite. for D3 and D4 A8 at least. Idk I dont know so much of audis but S500 2009 was quite reliable for me
I had a 2005 A8L that my wife and I absolutely loved. Got rid of it with 185,000 miles on it when it started to cost more than it was worth. Only reason for not buying another is because I now work for FCA ( Stellantis ), and decided to buy a Jeep to get the employee discounts. May eventually go back to Audi in the future.
I did purchase a 2016 A8 L4T used from a Audi dealership after a 2 year lease return. I had APR do a stage II ECM remap tune on it so it remained under factory warranty being done through a Audi certified performance center. This set the American factory speed limiter another 40 mph up the scale so it no longer cut out at 130 mph. I can't find a thing to dislike about this car! Glad my father drove Packard's, Cadillac's, Lincolns, Buicks, when I was a kid it rubbed off on me I guess.
I bought a second hand 2011 A8 4.2TDI three years ago. It had done 80,000km, I’ve put another 110,000 on it, mainly country driving. It’s a great car inside and out, and quite economical (around 8l/100km). Very reliable, it did blow a front suspension strut on a very hot day (44C) going through a pothole. Repair was $5000 but covered by insurance. A couple of little niggles, the sunroof refused to close one day, but it worked again the next day and no issues since. Presently the adaptive cruise control is not working, it says there is a camera fault. I would rather it had a full spare tyre, not a space saver.
I got a similar one to yours a 4.2 tdi there are very reliable cars if the vehicle has been looked after right mine dose have the keyless entry but it doesn't work on the Passenger side door there do go though brake disc
@@CarLifee I’ve had same issue on my Q5 2011. I replaces myself the door handle mechanism for keyless (super easy) and guess what? It has been working for nearly 5 years with no issues. The mechanism i ordered from amazon or ebay, not sure. The issue with the 2010-2012 keyless is that audi uses silicone to isolate the mechanism from water, however with time silicone gets weaker and at some point it leaks water. That’s when the issues start. I suggest you to check some RUclips videos. The new handle mechanism costed like 20$. Compares to audi’s offer 250$.
@@unusualchannel8437 it was odd if you unlocked it the keyless would work but after a while it stop and had to manually open it but it's with a new owner now sadly it was a great car.
Best deal right now for large luxury sedan. 2013-2014 a8 4.0T are in the low 20s. Buy a warranty and APR tune (545 hp) and get ready to surprise newer S8s, AMGs etc.
The plenum drains getting debris and clogged leaking into the cabin is a common VW/Audi issue. In the VW the TCM )Transmission control module) is under the carpet in drivers side . The weep hole drains from sunroof het blocked and they egress on side post by door . Leaks into floor. To clean drains use a piece of weed eater cord to snake them out at least twice a year .
Thank you. This car has recently been high on my short list and your video has helped me a lot. Still might get one is just good to know what the reality of ownership will be. Thanks
I have a D4 S8 and never had any problems. Don’t buy the cheap ones lol I found my with one owner 25,000 miles fully loaded S8. I did purchase a 4 year extended warranty with $100 deductible. I also installed an APR stage 1 tune, custom exhaust and Air intakes
If you read on forums, 4.0 is a problem child. The 3.0T V6 is much more reliable. I had a D3 - had issues with bushings and struts - heavy car and cost me a lot of money to find it - was the control arm bushings... i calculated the car cost me 2000 in maintenance per year... acceptable...
Definitely. This guy made this title like this was something terrible or something.... EVERY car have at least few issues, air suspension is expensive to fix and almost sure to fail but it looks like its problem on every car that have it
Good comprehensive video. I own the 2013 A8L 4,2 and feels like suspension is starting to be faulty, as when I come to car the suspension is always down and take a few minutes for it to raise the height
Hey guys, I have a 2015 A8L 3.0 TDI from new. The first problem I had was with the Adblu, then the bushes and suspension arms. I changed the bushes, Audi warranty covered the adblu (they took 5 weeks), 6 months later the problem with the AdBlu reoccurred. This time they took just over 2 weeks but when I received the car, there was a leak in the coolan system. Took it back, they ran a test and said they couldn't find it. So a year on I have a leak with the coolant. Which I cannot be bothered to take to Audi anymore. I just can't wait to find a decent car to partexchange it with.
I think this is true of ANY car. I wouldn’t trust any car, buy the car you want, do your best to ensure it has a full service history and keep money aside for when it DOES go wrong I’d rather drive around in a 12 year old A8 than a brand new MG or FORD.
my air bag light was on, Audi said new passenger seat £1679, 00 ,i went to another garage ,£6 for a plugg under my seat all good now .4 years super ,still good .

@@moejohnson8459 Well I have an 07 and I've had it since it was only 45,000 miles on it. Only thing I've had to do so far is put a new starter in it. And that was about 3 months after I had it. It's only 86,000 on it now and I don't have any problems with it at all. I did the research before I bought it and it far surpasses Mercedes and Jaguar with reliability. I drive it pretty smoothly, I hardly ever step on it because it's probably needing that intake cleaning he spoke of because I can tell that it should probably be faster than it is. I have a set of 22' wheels on it and it has given me Absolutely zero problems with the suspension. I love the car though but I admit if I'd watched this video before I bought it, it would scare me into something else probably. Again, my car has low miles and has been taken care of pretty good tho.
I own a 2012 a8 4.2ltr 124k no real issues high pressure fuel pump $208.00 mechanic charged $45.00 to install. Fuel perge valve $41.00 installed 2min. Water heater valve also throws transmission cooler code same part. free recall. But went out again $150.00 mechanic charged $95.00 installed. Expect to replace lower control arms they run $150 to $250 a piece. $125 labor. Over all Fantastic car for Under $20k I drive it very hard I priced used transmission incase it went bad only $275.00 on ebay apparently these transmission last forever.
i had no idea these were sold with the key slot in the dash. on U.S spec cars there is no opening to put the key there, instead its the sensor where you would place the fob if the battery is dead. so overseas spec A8 have a key slot like in the dash as an a4, q5, etc of that era would too. that’s so interesting!!!
I have yet to hear of any high end luxury car that didn't have a lot of mechanical and electrical problems even for a brand new one. No matter if it's Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Range Rover, and even Bentley or Rolls-Royce. It's funny how these vehicles brand new cost almost $100,000 or more so you'd think they would have the best quality parts for the price even when they are well taken care of. But for many years high end luxury vehicles have always been known to have the most problems. I didn't include Mercedes and Lexus into the group only because those seem to hold themselves together a lot more than the others. It doesn't mean that something like the S-Class or LS doesn't have it's own issues as well, but they last longer and are not as expensive to fix.
Interesting findings thanks! I am in the market for a used 2019 A8 V6 fully loaded. I drive ES 350's for awhile now and reliability is paramount for those cars. I want to pay the right price for the A8 BUT how aggressive I should be?
Yeah uhm you are going from one of the most reliable luxury cars to a possible money pit. So I would get an aggressive discount and have the intent on purchasing a extended bumper to bumper warranty.
Yes a 10 year old Mercedes S550 is just as bad.Busings were replaced.Starter replaced.Radiator replaced.Battery(had 3) replaced.Factory sound system (boise) sucks terrible.I had to add two amps. One for bass and one for highs along with four tweeters.Other that those tweets, the car is a gem."You gotta pay the cost to be like a boss".Or you could just be a robot and drive a boring ass car like a honda, not!
You're confusing the facelift with pre-facelift, describing the post-facelift headlights while sitting in front of and pointing at the pre-facelift lights which do not have the functionality bei g described.
Ok checked out - the only thing the pre facelift LEDs do is “high beam assist” not blinding people... yeah the sequential lighting of road is with post-facelift

93000 kilometers.....means he did nearly drive in 10 years. most audi A8 got 250-400.000 kilometer after 2-5 years. A lot of people buy a car like this and drive around in the city. Short distance. the best way to visit every 3-6 month your Audi man. Drive it every week 1000-3000 kilometer over highway and if the car get his or her I do not know who drives it? Normal service not much problems. Air Suspension is about 9-12 years than need to replaced. Every brand.
If you are buying car like this, first you needs to realize, how long you want to keep it, and to be prepared for really expensive repairs, because most likely previous owners sold it, right before them. I really don't recommend to totally screwed up this car with coil suspension, if you don't have money for new one, especially when here it is related to another subsystems, which are "talking" to each other. In simple this is not a car from 90's with few wires here and there, so if you are not ready to maintain it properly, then buy rather something much simpler, like A4/A5
Audi like Queen 👑 you can love or hate. But you can't be neutral. !!!! Fill premium gas, and change oil on time- sinthetic only. This one A8 2012 perfect!!!
I recently got 2012 A8 L in a mint condition with barely 17000 miles on it , so far I am enjoying it, however few things am concerned with, for which I am not able to find proper answers. During parking from the front side/ or sides it sometimes doesn't beeps, neither it shows in MMI that I might be hitting something. But when parked and then when I put it in reverse, it shows on the MMI that hey dont go in the front there is an obstruction , I am like "Come on man I needed you to tell me this when I was parking, not when I am reversing". Is it normal ?
Only real problems are sunroof and oilscreen for turbo's for the 4.0tt..... which is covered by an audi recall now. If you think about this car, buy it.
I own a late 2014 A8 diesel, which is fast and very comfortable. It has covered 33,000 miles with no issues. Would you recommend that I get rid of the car before it does cause problems, and what would you recommend as a replacement? I was considering a Kia Stinger, which everyone seems to think is a great car.
I've had an 07 for over 6 years and I can tell that it's not as responsive as it should be. The intake removal job is needed, should I only take it to the dealer or can most shops deal with that? Also, us it expensive to do?
Looking at a 2011 with 100000 kms. air susp and front and rear message seats dvd in rear also. rear reclining seats too. this video making me think twice.
The 3.0 is the more reliable one. Unit 2017 the 4.0T had a design flaw that would clog the oil line feeding the turbos and result in turbo failure. I’ve heard of this happening as early as 50k miles on the clock. It’s an unsettling feeling of sitting on a ticking bomb, I have a 2015 4.0T with now 86k miles and no more warranty.
@@Br230. the oil line issue got a recall, was fix and turbos still going strong. Shockingly no major issues and I’m at 108k now. An occasional electrical gremlin pops up but then resolves itself quickly. If getting this car I’d still say the 4.0 is the way to go. Maybe check for transmission maintenance history, for many years before the were “service free” on these they are not.
ordered an A8 L to be delivered from Kentucky, 2015, V8, all options, 43000 miles. i'll gladly buy a 5 year or 75,000 (to 125K) mile bumper to bumper warranty for about $5K.
Sam Audi A8 2013 has two engine options 3 l supercharged and 4.2 l turbo with engine you think is more problematic I love this cars I think to purchase but I’m afraid I will have so many problems let me know thanks
Thas6an easy fix, at the engine bay there are two electro valves, they need to be open and cleaned. It's literally 0 cost, easy to do. Plenty of RUclips videos how to clean them. All the Audi have the same valves, watch video how to for any other model, they are all the same, maybe location slightly varies.
I notice you did not mention that 2018 which is what I And looking for But I've seen a lot of 2017 that I really like So I'm glad I seen your video this really worries me Even though I know how to work on cars it's not something I want to do on a car I'm looking to buy. I am used to Honda motors so yes I look forward to running them 3 and 400000 miles easily But it sounds like this is something I can not get from these audis. I guess he makes couple of months I will see if I'd buy one or not.😔😬🤔 Thank you for this video
Yes. It’s true for ANY TSI type direct injection engine from any manufacturer. There are liquid or spray products to help dissolve the buildup. Look up videos of “Seafoam”.
I just test drove a 2014 a8 3.0T. Is it normal when you are driving slow like driving in a parking lot, When you take your foot off the gad pedal in first or second gear low rpm’s to feel a slight jerk in the transmission. Almost feels like it is stuck in that gear rather than up shifting to a higher gear. Almost feels like your in a standard and you forgot to shift.
@@dwoods2700 I bought the car after paying for an inspection at a dealer. They said it was normal and if there was an actual problem the engine light would be on. Seems to be the way the car is geared. Do you notice a little lag when your accelerating fast shifting from like second through 4th gears ?
If you are going to do all the work yourself it’s probably 70% cheaper to fix, if you are not at all or willing to learn or fix yourself you are going to pay 3k for everything that goes wrong and normal maintenance is a little more expensive and intensive but maybe 1500 dollars every couple of years worth of maintenance is what you can expect Mainly spark plugs, coil packs, motor mounts and thermostat on the water pump. These cars are like 6 figures when new so you are gonna pay to play if you don’t have at least 5k set aside or it doesn’t have a warranty of any kind and you are not inclined to do work yourself don’t buy one.
This video isn't about your car, if you own one and you have had no issues, well I am happy for you. This is about everyone else that wants to buy one. Be safe!

i have the exact same car. 2011 A8L. same problem as well, check engine light is on and my car stalls when i turn it on, the car starts up fine when it’s a cold start but after that i have to pump the gas as well to get it to start. my camera and sensors do not work and the check engine light always pops on even if you clear it, it will come on again when you start the car. it shakes and i have to rev or accelerate so it won’t shut off on me. i’ve taken mine to a lot of mechanics and they can’t seem to figure it out cause Audi’s are known for electrical problems. i don’t know if this helps but plug in a scanner, if it has the code “P2755” then that’s the problem. has something to do with the “transmission cooler control fluid circuit high” i’m taking my audi to the dealership for the 2nd time cause i found a recall describing the problems my car has and i’m going to make them fix it for free cause it says free of charge and recalls do not expire.
hope this helps!
Um 2000 dollars per shock?
@@patrlcksreaLView 1500 for a full set if you go aftermarket so not that big deal

Those are major issues smh..

Should spend 12000$ every 60-100k miles...?
There’s a recall available currently for these issues

Sounds like all the recalls and issues were with mostly 2010, 13, and 17. I’m looking at a 2012 A8L 4.2. What a nice car!
Did you end up getting it? I’m looking at one today.
Best deal right now for large luxury sedan. 2013-2014 a8 4.0T are in the low 20s. Buy a warranty and APR tune (545 hp) and get ready to surprise newer S8s, AMGs etc.
Any warranty you buy will be voided by a tune. Just know that
The plenum drains getting debris and clogged leaking into the cabin is a common VW/Audi issue. In the VW the TCM )Transmission control module) is under the carpet in drivers side . The weep hole drains from sunroof het blocked and they egress on side post by door . Leaks into floor. To clean drains use a piece of weed eater cord to snake them out at least twice a year .

@@stephangrenier3790 Hows your experience been so far? I'm strongly considering a 2013 s8 and would like to know how its been for you
If you read on forums, 4.0 is a problem child.
EVERY car have at least few issues, air suspension is expensive to fix and almost sure to fail but it looks like its problem on every car that have it
Agree, the 3.0 D4 is bulletproof
Good comprehensive video. I own the 2013 A8L 4,2 and feels like suspension is starting to be faulty, as when I come to car the suspension is always down and take a few minutes for it to raise the height
if it goes down alone when the car is parked then you have a leak somewhere in the system
I'm sold they have spilt arm rest
Just get the 3.0, bulletproof setup. I have a ‘16 and it’s amazing. I’ve owned D2 and D3 previously.
I think this is true of ANY car. I wouldn’t trust any car, buy the car you want, do your best to ensure it has a full service history and keep money aside for when it DOES go wrong
I’d rather drive around in a 12 year old A8 than a brand new MG or FORD.
It would have been nice to hear about the transmission service and how frequently required and how if you do it yourself

Again, my car has low miles and has been taken care of pretty good tho.

i had no idea these were sold with the key slot in the dash. on U.S spec cars there is no opening to put the key there, instead its the sensor where you would place the fob if the battery is dead. so overseas spec A8 have a key slot like in the dash as an a4, q5, etc of that era would too. that’s so interesting!!!
Key fits inside the cupholder, between two of the 4 fins holding the cup/bottle, just press them slightly in while pushing down the key.
That suspension. You can get them rebuilt saving a ton of money.
I believe S class and 7 series would be even worst 😬
Ok, now I have a problem! "Knocking" is not on my list of seat massage options!

Sure
If you are going to do all the work yourself it’s probably 70% cheaper to fix, if you are not at all or willing to learn or fix yourself you are going to pay 3k for everything that goes wrong and normal maintenance is a little more expensive and intensive but maybe 1500 dollars every couple of years worth of maintenance is what you can expect
Mainly spark plugs, coil packs, motor mounts and thermostat on the water pump. These cars are like 6 figures when new so you are gonna pay to play if you don’t have at least 5k set aside or it doesn’t have a warranty of any kind and you are not inclined to do work yourself don’t buy one.
