- Just when you thought the groove was over! 😎 Here's the solo/original version of 'Groove Of Midnight'. 🌌 ✨ Because of the surprising amount of love for the version with Syradelic & R.E.D. that I initially released for the 'Forever' album, I figured it was time to unveil the version with just Michael. So, enjoy!🤘🏾♾ And lastly, DEFINITELY make sure to download it to get "The Groove Of Midnight Pack" which includes this version, as well as the versions of MJ/Sarah + MJ/Red, and obviously the version on the Forever album! 💿 Stay tuned this October, y'all.

NOTE: The reason why this one wasn't on the album was because, truthfully, it wasn't finished and I felt that including Sarah & Red was a better option to make it more of an 'official' song for the album. So, consider this one to be 'Michael's version' before giving it to Siedah. 😂

The original version of “Groove Of Midnight” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on October 1st, 2021. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the demo snippet that’s been on the internet since 2003, as well as the released version by Siedah Garrett on her “Kiss Of Life” album, as well as the version with Syradelic & R.E.D. that recently leaked, it has been revealed that “Groove of Midnight” was originally written alongside Rod Temperton and Siedah Garrett in 1986 during the Bad sessions, and had a demo with just himself. It’s unknown what or who the exact inspiration was for the song. He began working further on this version around 1986 with Quincy Jones and Joe Kehr, before bringing in Syradelic as the guest vocalist.
During the Bad sessions, before Sarah & Red joined the song, Michael and Siedah Garrett had been working on a few songs for the next album with Quincy and Joe. His brother Tito was also present during the sessions. It’s now believed, due to the lyrics, this is where the origins of “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” come from. It was also Joe’s idea to do the call-back to Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” with the whispering, which Quincy wasn’t pleased with, while Michael approved. Joe is singing background vocals, while Siedah handled the songwriting with Michael, Joe, and Rod Temperton, and both Quincy & Joe handled the production. It was Tito's idea to re-use the spoken word part from "Heaven Knows I Love You", a song from The Jackson 5's Goin Places album, as an homage to the old days.
While they all liked this version, Michael still felt it deserved more. Shortly after, Joe invited multiple musical partners that he introduced to Michael, to Westlake recording studios where he, Michael, Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton were working on the album.
Then a few days later, Joe also invited rapper R.E.D. to the studio, as Michael felt the song needed a rap on it. It’s noted that Sparklyel can be heard laughing in the background, meaning she is also technically featured on the track. This is due to the fact that around this time, she was also in the studio recording material with Michael that remain unreleased.
While they all liked this version, Pink Iguana Records would not allow Sarah to be on it, similar to Whitney Houston not duetting on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, so they shelved it and Michael and Rod Temperton would later on give it to Siedah Garrett, who would finish the song and put her version on her “Kiss Of Life” album. During the making of this, Michael and Sarah also worked on the original versions of “Privacy”, “Scream” etc together, in which Sarah provided vocals, guitars, as Michael was a fan of her guitar work. She would later on sign to Motown Records and release her debut single “Psychopath” that same year, also produced by Joe Kehr, while Red went on to use her rap verse for a single called “RYB” that also came out the same year.
