I bought a similar device, and love it. I have used it with my Weber grill, and this little thing actually kept on smoking for 19 hours! Excellent results.
@@Fumingzeus does that actually work??.. we got A tone of redwood here in idaho and you can collect it for free out in the forest.. can I actually grind it up and use the wood dust?
I agree, ofcoarse CSG was not designed for this purpose. To me it was just a test to see if it would work. I still love using this device, to cold smoke salmon. Perhaps I will shoot a video for it in the neir future. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for the feedback jeffhrose, Glad you like the info, that I try to bring across. I find that my english speach is not good enough to narrate, so I do add some descriptive text and I try and support the videos with music. Of coarse the choise of music is always hard and no music at all I think is no option. Have you watched my latest videos? Do you think they work better?
I LOVE this gadget. I bought one about a year ago so I could start making my own bacon and that's gone on to using it for guanciale, cured sausage and various cheeses. You know you can just leave the tealight where it is, it doesn't do it any harm ;)
I love it to. In this video I used it for the first time. Hopefully I can find some time to cold smoke a salmon this weekend. If so the video will be up end of november or at the beginning of december.
I completely agree with your assessment of trying to insert and remove the tea light. As I tried to remove one it tipped, ignited the wax and gave my hand quite extensive 2nd degree burns. I probably left it in a bit too long, being a new user, but still. Will try a kitchen blow torch next time.
Nice review! I have the competitor's 6" maze that uses dust and it works well. I also have their tube smoker that uses pellets. The tube smoker works really well for smoke but it raises the temp in the kettle a bit too much for cheese. I think I am going to get their maze that does use pellets for the perfect cheese smoking setup! I love smoked cheese too!
Thats a good idea, but still the screw in the tealight is still not great. I got some other tips as well, for instance a iron wire around the tealight in stead of a srew.
Indeed, I wonder if you arranged them in little rows, end to end along the maze, if they would burn through? OR... put the pellets in, and then fill it in with the wood dust? I also dig the shirt, jacket and skeleton watch while setting up the bbq, such style!
I've cold smoked so much bacon using my ProQ. Awesome results every single time, as long as you use the right sized sawdust, and you pack it properly. If the dust is too coarse, it will keep going out. If it's too full, you get crossover between the channels, and it burns out too quickly.
I got one for Christmas. Unlike in your video, my tealight slides in and out very easily, no screw required. Perhaps the tray the candle sits on is not very precisely made. Why not save old tealights that have little wax left - only needs to burn for a minute, and there's less chance of spilling any wax.
I've noticed there seem to be 2 sizes of tea lights these days. The original shorter size and a slightly larger one. In another video of a similar gadget, the candle slid out easily. (They just blew it out and pulled it with their fingers.) But thanks to PX for the detailed visual. I worry when it's shortened that I'm going to do something bone-headed that the demonstrator obviously didn't believe anyone would be stupid enough to do.
I see a problem that you pointed out with the tea light candle. Looking at the smoker tray where the candle goes the left side is bent in and should be straightened to allow the candle to slide in and out with easy. If you do this it should work better. you can also design a small cup with a handle to hold the candle for easy handling. Just a though of what I have seen.
Hi. So I live in South Africa and although in some respects we are up to date in other respects we are far behind. Certainly in terms of gadgets like the cold smoker. I bought one, a spiral, which it seems came from China. I did everything you did and the dratted thing keeps on going out after about 3-5min. I put it in my Weber which had enough airflow and nothing. I then put it in the open and still nothing. I changed from oak barrel sawdust to walnut and still nothing. Is there something I am missing or is our saw dust different from yours? BTW. I even went and bought a sieve and made it into a donut to try and even that didn’t work. Thanks for the vid. Regards Ralph
You've more patience than me, I'd have cracked my shits and kicked the bbq kettle into the next town, broken my foot and finished up in emergency room at hospital.
Thanks for the vid! I wanted to buy one of these cold smokers and this vid persuaded me to do so :) one question tho: why did you put salt on the smoker? Otherwise, you seems like a gourmand ;)
I'd say from looking at the smoker (compared to other stock photos and videos on here) that the tray the tea light fits into on yours is slightly mishapen which is why it is such a tight fit. Did you not try bending the metal back straight so the tea light slid in and out easily?
I fixed it after the video.. but I don't use the lights in my barbecue anymore. Don't want to risk getting candle wax in my barbecue. I use a creme brulee torch to get it started.
I want to cold smoke some mackerels most of the RUclips videos I have seen the mackerels are hanging does it matter for cold smoking whether the fish is hanging or lying on its side. Will it still cold smoke properly
it seems that one side in the area where you put the tealight into is bent, try to fix it up so that there is enough space for tealight can be deployed without problems
Hi, i brought one of these smokers to make some cold smoked salmon, but cant seem to keep it going for longer thank 10 mins. I have the lid on my and all vents open, i have even tried half opening the lid to get more air flow in my weber and used 2 different types of chips. Any suggestions?
Sean Somers Sure... 1. Most important that you use sawdust.. it has to be dust. 2. Make sure the dust is dry If your dust is too coarse it will die. You could grind it down in a coffee grinder Hope this will solve your problem PMX
Only issue is you have to jam your candle under where the wood is, because you've not filled the start & just bare mesh is exposed to half the flame. Cover all mesh up to below the edge of the spiral bead, that candle will slip in & out easily
Ive always wondered about the tealight candle. I purchased a pack of 6 of them and will modify the next to fit. In saying that, I might be better off hanging the expense and just get a butane torch anyway
Yeah, what was done here is awkward and doesn't need to be. You can still use a tealight, just do this instead: 1. Get a tiny tin that holds mints. Use the bottom part only. This kind of thing: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41GYrPMeapL.jpg It's exactly the right size for the tealight and fits perfectly into the opening. No stupid screw. 2. Don't start the ProQ on the grill, start it on a small table next to the grill. When it's smoking well, remove the tin above with your fingers, no screw, no mess. Blow out the candle, and put the cold smoke generator into your grill. Problems solved. But I also like your cool torch and I'm going to buy one. :)
I was wondering if I could use this in a hot grill? So basically have indirect heat with the CSG separate to the coals. How would the heat affect the burn time?
Have the Pro Q cold smoker and can't get it to stay lit for more than 10 mins.. I tried lighting it with the enclosed candle, mini torch, and my big propane torch, and again,it only stays lit for 10 mins. at most. I even baked the fine sawdust that came with the Pro Q for 30 mins.,as instructed. And tried lighting again. Ten mins. later it was out. What am I doing wrong???
hello! i was helping you could help me out.. i am currently trying out using this method, but somehow the smoke always extinguishes itself within a minute or two after the initial burning. 1. i used a lighter instead of blow torch 2. my sawdust is somewhat like shavings, extremely thin but a little bigger than what you would define as "dust" size please help!!
Dear Pitmaster X; I've subscribe to your channel since circa 2014, maybe if my memories serve me rigtht. I've followed your journey over the years as your channel grows. This vparticular vdeo was suggested, maybe by RUclips algorithm. Great😊, ...cheers Pitmaster X.
This was a helpful video. However I don’t know many “pitmasters” with a spotless grill trying to bbq while wearing a sports jacket and manicured nails. Nice watch though.
My ProQ lasted for about 40 smoking sessions before the mesh burned out using Oak, Hickory and Hawthorn dust. Although the ProQ is simple, easy use and does give good results it is way overpriced for what it is. I am currently using the Barbecook spiral cold smoke generator, and so far at 6 sessions in, it is as good as the ProQ with no significant difference in use, but the Barbecook version is so much better priced.
It seems like the pellets are too big, rather than the maze being too small... they aren't able to progressively ignite each other down the line because there's so much empty space.
Instead of a candle you could put a few drops of methylated spirits on the beginning of the trail and light it up. After a minute of two, blow it out and it smoulders.
Every one can see that the space where you put in your candle has been bent. Of course it won't fit that way and it's to narrow. This is not usual en normal functioning when you buy a new one which is not damaged!
Nice video, but you do know you're on RUclips, don't you? Where's the pounding metal music, the shaven headed man or the shouting? Put some effort in. Informative video - I've got one of their hot smokers and it is a full member of the family now. I too noted your casual flash of interesting watch.

Yes wood dust burns slower than pellets, but it also produces les smoke. I used oak wood dust

Thats a good idea, but still the screw in the tealight is still not great. I got some other tips as well, for instance a iron wire around the tealight in stead of a srew.
I wonder if it might work crushing the pellets so they become coarse dust once more? Pellets are a lot easier to get where I come from.

Not accurate at all! Your Tea light holder is bent and that's why the light doesn't slide in and out. Get yourself some pilers and fix that.
