I was struck by lightning in Sept. 1979 in Tampa, Florida. I was riding my bike super fast, side-by-side with my friend, we both lived in the same college dorm at USF. She was only 2 feet away next to me on my left side. The lightning bolt came down with a huge "BANG" noise & bifurcated in front of my face, striking each of my hands on my handlebars. Shot me & my bike up into the air, then knocked me over to the ground. There was no rain, yet. My hands & fingers were smoking. They said at the hospital, that the rubber from my bike tires saved my life. Eventually my burnt fingernails grew out. But I never felt the same.

When I worked at AccuWeather back in the late 90s I had to call an LPGA tournament and order everyone off the course because of an approaching thunderstorm. It was weird having that kind of authority.
It’s crazy. When I was a kid in the ‘60’s we would camp as a family in different states. We ALWAYS had a campsite where we placed the tent right below a large ever-shading tree. Later on, they advised - DON’T even stand under a tree in a storm. ( We went through many severe lightning storms under those trees. I suppose the metal supports of the tent, all centered on the top, could have fried all 6 of us.)
If a tree has a hollow water-filled cavity, & then it's struck by lightning, the water will turn instantly into steam. It will blow the tree apart like there was a bomb planted inside of it. To make it even spicier, you even get wood shrapnel from the blast to contend with.

Wow! When I lived in Florida we would get lightening like this during the day when the SUN WAS SHINING! Florida the only place where I went into the bathroom during a storm, scared to death by the violent lightning.
I'm from Florida. You think it's bad there? You should see Atlantic Beach North Carolina... 3:00 a.m. we're laying in bed dead asleep, loudest sound I have EVER heard - I swear to god I was absolutely convinced a nuclear bomb had just detonated. I was literally frozen with fear. I laid there for several seconds actually expecting the building to be ripped apart any moment. I couldn't tell if that orange light outside the window was just the porch light or the glow of a mushroom cloud. My husband somehow was still dead asleep, but I reached over and took his hand, still convinced that this was it. After a while, there were some white flashes followed by more loud cracks. Relief washed over me finally, and I cried. About a month later my husband and I were in the living room watching a movie around midnight. Bright white flash with a simultaneous SNAPBOOM!!!!!!! I literally screamed bloody murder. My husband immediately began comforting me and continued to do so throughout the next several peals of thunder. Both times it wasn't raining and it was at night, and came without any warning. Growing up a Floridian I am not afraid of thunderstorms, but Atlantic Beach is on a whole other level.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should NEVER seek shelter underneath a tree during a thunderstorm. You most likely would not survive if the tree was struck. Edited to say: I replayed the video. Someone was underneath the tree. They ran into the house.
Very true what you said though. My grandfather just varely escaped lightening strike from sitting under a tree. He had my mother as a child in his arms when he ran. Have heard the story from both my mother and grandfather.
From what I've seen, lightning can either destroy a tree, just damage it, or do nothing at all to it. I think it depends on exactly what path it takes to ground. If it finds the path of least resistance is through the sap in the tree, you can forget about the tree- it will literally explode. If it just travels down the wet surface of the bark, it might do no damage at all.
Mother Nature spared the camera man so the world could witness her authority.

All the water in the tree is vaporized into steam and splits the tree!

You ruined the joke every time a meme becomes mainstream you repeat it over and over and over until its not funny anymore you assholes take the fun out of everything because you dont know when to stop.
Impressive and very scary!
Al final de la madera de ese árbol hay una piedra. En forma de lanza. Es el rayo... 🎉🎉 Luky
When lightning takes away your electrolytes
This moment has received more views and attention than the entire U.S. Women’s Open
ask feminists to support them😂
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should NEVER seek shelter underneath a tree during a thunderstorm.
@@MindYourOwn777 I’m happy to hear they survived.
😮😮

They say lightning never strikes the same place twice well I count 3 strikes in the same spot 😂
Oh my god this is incredible.
Camera man never dies 😅 proved again & again 😮
And mfs wonder why I’m terrified to even move during thunderstorms even when I’m inside
Yep. Because lightning can strike inside house too
Lightning hit a red oak 20 feet from me. The huge pieces that blew off where like marshmallow it was so soft and spongey
This happens to trees around my house every year.
How?
One time at band camp? Lmao 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂
I love how lightning looks like a root
Well, the good news is that it was the tree instead of us meaning the cameraman😅
Cameraman never dies!!!!
