I found this in 2023, end of summer, wondering at my lack of knowledge on the blueberry bush I bought. This was a perfect video to get started. 8 minutes for a brief foundation for pruning. Kudos, good sir.
Superb tutorial, Nick! Knowing how to trim and prune a blueberry bush can make such a big difference! A fabulous reference video for anyone growing or looking to grow delicious fruit year on year! Such a helpful and educational video!! Nice and simple.. once you know how!! Thank you for sharing this information, my friend!!💚
Thankyou Nick. Recently inherited my mum's potted blueberry bush she has had for years now I know how to look after it after it myself thank you very much
Thank you for the advice and information! I was white surprised by the lack of information about how to care for blueberry bushes so I’m glad I came across your video!!
Excellent how to on pruning sir, this video was right on time as I need to get to pruning my blueberry bushes over here!! Have a good weekend sir!! Dan
I don't think I have ever cleaned a set of snips, something I really should work on. I'll be out pruning ours sometime in the next few weeks. A very informative and well edited vid mate, cheers. 🍺
Hi mate, a good concise informative video. I must confess to not sterilising my secateurs enough. Really like the into 👌👌. All the best 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
When is the best time of year/season to prune the branches.? In Australia we are in Autumn (Fall), and my husband pruned my blueberries tree/ bush just to the main trunks. And now I’m panicking, and with great anticipations, I’m waiting to see if that was a good choice.
Hi. You normally cut back blueberries in the winter when the bush is dormant. I’d say if he’s cut the branches back to the main trunk then you’ll not get any fruit next year. New growth will appear in spring but that won’t fruit until the following summer. Sorry for the bad news. Take care. Nick
Thanks for the Info Nick. Ive planted a blueberry bush this spring 2024 and it appears to have taken in the soil rather well - had plenty of growth and leaves, but hardly a handful of blueberries this 1st summer. I do know my soil isnt acid enough, and will correct this in the autumn and spring 2025. Ive lost the label telling me what variety it was, and was going to add another bush to help with cross polination - is this going to be a problem taking a guess at what variety next bush to buy ? should I take them out of the plot and put them in large pots also ?
Hi Geoff. Apologies for the delay in responding. Regarding varieties I’ve grown quite a few different blueberries but never had a pollination problem. The bees seem to find them and pollinate them. I would if possible grow them in large pots as it’s easier to keep the soil acid. But one thing to note is that you’ll need to commit to keeping them well watered. Take care. Nick
Hello Nick, do you cover the blueberry bushes with net while they are pruning. Last year I had a lot of berries and suddenly they dissapeared:( Did some birds have a delicious lunch:)))) Best regards from Poland, Marta
Got my pruning all wrong this year. Butchered it at the wrong time. So need to wait for leaves to drop, clear them out, cut away twigs. Oh boy I got it so wrong. What time of year was this carried out.
@@NicksAllotmentDiary Thank you for your feed back. Meanwhile, I started a trial with 2 cuttings dipped into water since I just have a small and a young bush of Blueberry at the present time. Maybe I'll add some drops of vinegar to it? Have a nice week-end.
Hi there.. thanks for nice and informative video 👍 is it OK for me to prune at this time when here at Slovakia are still temperatures bellow 0 .. around minus 5 celsius? or should I wait? thanks for all yours videos, Robert
Hi Robert. As long as you prune it while the bush is dormant then you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t do it while the temperature is below 0 Celsius though. Wait until it warms up slightly. Take care. Nick
I've read that I should prune new blueberries bushes immediately after planting, even if they've already begun to flower. Should I follow these same pruning protocols for a young plant? (Obviously there won't be much old or dead wood yet.)
Hi. I wouldn’t do that with a small new blueberry bush. If you prune new wood and cut off the flowering part then you’ll get no fruit at all that year. I’d wait until the bush is a bit bigger before giving it it’s first pruning. Take care. Nick
Hi Carl. When you say has gone dormant do you mean it’s lost all it’s leaves ? A blueberry bush that loses all leaves in summer has probably dried out too much. It may recover and grow leaves next spring as long as all the stems haven’t died off. Take care. Nick
@@NicksAllotmentDiary Thanks for your response, yes it has some new buds however most are dried up and not coming out at all, I still haven't seen one leaf come from any of the new buds however. how can you tell if the plant is in fact dead? or just.. trying to recover?
@@carlnikolov I’d check one of the new stems from last year ( usually red or green rather than dark and woody). Scrape a little off the surface of the stem with a knife. If just below the surface it’s green and not brittle then the plant is living. If the stems are brittle and dried out then it has probably died. If it has died check the roots to see if they have been gnawed away by a pest. Take care. Nick
hey buddy, I have a question to you. Firstly I have 3 different type blueberry bushes but a patriot type that blueberry bush I guess it looks like dry so I mean crumpled. But I asked to someone, he said me, patriot genus gives late fruit and leaf. Is it true ?
Hi Mert. I’ve just checked and it is an early to mid season variety so in the UK would fruit from Mid July. If no leaves and flowers are developing try scratching away some bark to see if it’s alive as it should be green or red but not dry and brown. Take care. Nick

I have an unopened bag of Ericaceous compost that I haven’t used for 2 years will it still be ok to use it or expired ?
Hello Nick, do you cover the blueberry bushes with net while they are pruning. Last year I had a lot of berries and suddenly they dissapeared:( Did some birds have a delicious lunch:)))) Best regards from Poland, Marta
Hi Marta. I keep my blueberry bushes in a fruit cage to keep off the birds. You could use netting after the fruit has formed. Take care. Nick
I'm a gardener based in Ireland I found your video very useful my blueberries are not grown in a pot in the ground would it enquire different pruning?
Hi, glad you’ve found it useful. If they are growing in the ground then you should be able to follow the same pruning process. Take care. Nick

Is it possible to propagate blueberry plants with these cuttings? Thanks.
Yes you can try to do that. If you place them in some free draining ericaceous compost and place them somewhere shady they may root. Take care. Nick

When the blueberry is not actively growing. In the UK this is winter. In warmer climates after fruiting would probably be best. Take care. Nick

Hi Bob. Thanks very much. They are 30 litre buckets( 6.5 gallons) Take care. Nick

You don't need to bother cutting those little dead twigs..they are not being fed...and they aren't really blocking air flow or sunlight
The first branch you cut was a mistake...never cut those main branches on blueberries...you also cut another large green branch on the side... Unnecessary waste...
You're going to have way less berries than the way I'd of pruned it...
