Have you ever heard a whistling/nose in the 650ixdrive when accelerating between 20-40 mph? It usually does it when the car has been driving for a while. The AC does not have to be on. Dealership could never find the problem. They mentioned that intermittion noise are hard to locate.
Excellentttttt with lots of "professional" advice and knowledge. I has to do my 2013 x5 35i 3.0 litre turbo in a few days, i feel it a long job. At 48:00 minutes, I will be installing 6 new bosch plugs as mine got 158,000 kilometers on it. ty Tim for this excellent video 100-100
Great im just having a issue getting rhe new one on idk something not aligned in the back ill get back to it in the korning its cold in nys idk what made me take it out during this weather im just fed up of the noise
Thank you zaiten, replaced my valve cover gasket on my 640i following this video, when removing valve cover the plastic piece that clips inside valve cover disconnected from valve cover, reinstalled valve cover without putting that plastic piece back on inside valve cover ! (Forgot about it) How important is that for functioning of the car ??? Thanks
Tim, many thanks for this video. The process looks so simple in your hands 😅 Sorry for the stupid question: could you recall what was the reason for changing the gasket? Oil leakage or it's just a preventive measure? By the way, I hope you eventually tightened the 10mm bolt from the 56:50 moment
Thank you appreciate your feedback🙌 well this valve cover gasket started to leak in the back area slowly so that was the reason, I wouldn’t change it as preventative maintenance since you can’t really tell how long it will last. The rule is simple - it starts leaking change if it doesn’t then don’t touch it
Getting ready to do a valve cover and gasket replacement on my 2016 X5 with 66,000 miles, gasket went but since the PVC is integrated into the cover I decided to replace the cover as well...any way, what is the gasket adhesive you used as it was not clear enough for me to understand. Also do you have the valve cover bolt pattern sequence for the 26 bolts? I've seen it elsewhere but I'm going to check and double check to play it safe. thank you for taking the time to post your video...
Permatex black is what i used, as for bolt pattern doesn’t really matter just hand tight all of them and then try to go evenly I usually start with left bottom corner and then opposite and so on, nothing special
Excellent .... the content and knowledge and tips out class ........ diy ...... I have X5 with N55 engine... have ordered the parts...and get it done...... ....thank you Z.
Nice video! Thanks! It would be very helpful if you could publish a list of all the tools and socket types/sizes needed. Nothing worse than getting out in the middle of a job like this and finding out that you don't have on hand what you need.
Hello! Thank you for your videos, they are very helpful for me because I trying to fix my car (BMW X5 N55) by myself. Is it possible to replace oil pan gasket for BMW X5 N55 by myself? Thank you.
It is possible but extremely difficult and requires lots of proper equipment and experience to do the job safely and correctly, i’d say don’t do it but it is up to you to decide
On n55 usually gasket is enough but there are cases sometimes when pcv valve gets clogged and it is built into valve cover so the only long term remedy is valve cover replacement
@@Zeitenthanks for clarifying and your quick reply. I completed the entire valve head cover replacement along with gasket-flange and cap for oil filler on my 15’ 640i today at my local BMW dealership. Total invoiced was $1500. I was under the impression they were only replacing the gasket at first until I read the parts list.
@@Zeiten Appreciate your response, just completed mine on the coupe version today using your guide that rear bolt was ABSOLUTE HELL but did that along with new coils and plugs also did both the ofhg and various radiator hoses. Thank you!
Why don't you use gasket cement? It would ensure the gasket doesn't slip or move while you are reinstalling the valve cover. Plus it will make the gasket more durable in case, over time, you get an increase in crankcase pressure which is what blows out gaskets...
@@Zeiten I have to do this to my 2015 640 IX this weekend and I had no idea how to do it until I watched your video I can't thank you enough and the money you saved me
The good thing is the valve cover gasket screws are stuck on the cover. It would be really hard to keep it from falling out. That's the only good design by BMW. The other designs are overly engineered to make it difficult for a DIYer to do than a trained BMW technician.
Why is valve cover gaskets something that goes bad constantly on beemers? I thought BMWs were better than American cars but apparently it ain’t. Piss me off every now and then something breaks.
@@Zeiten I've heard that one before, truth is genuine bmw parts last 8 years plus. Aftermarket even with a bmw logo rubbed off for eg is still not the same. For the n55 engine especially I like the piece of mind genuine bmw gives... maybe my philosophy is different as I never sell my cars and don't want to do the job twice in 5 years.
Elring seals last 4-5 years, and I’m telling you this from experience of not just one car but thousands of bmws only(we don’t fix any other car brand) we fix every year, never had any issues with elring and there is absolutely no difference with genuine
But hey you do you, whatever makes you feel safer, in the end of the the purpose of this video is to show how to do without breaking anything what seal you want to use is completely up to you
@@Zeiten love the video, you made it look easy doing this job. I was just curious as the price difference is not huge on gasket... I have a 2003 e46 330ci still running strong at 240k miles. And have a 2015 640i at 125k miles. With the e46 i did the valve cover gasket twice before going genuine bmw. I also replaced every piece of rubber touching the intake manifold with genuine bmw in 2016. Since then never had a vacuum leak issue. (Owned that car since 2011). The 2015 640i gasket is due now at 7 years old and ive bought genuine. I put my failure down to high mileage mainly. Either way I just have a stronger preference for genuine bmw parts in certain places. Even brake discs for eg, the genuine ones last far longer than aftermarket. Either way I like the Elring brand and have tried their items over the years:) I like them much more than Meyle or Victor Reinz.!
Couldn't have done this project without your excellent video! Thank you for posting it!!
Thank you, appreciate your support🙌
I've done a lot of work on BMWs over the last 15 years. Your video is the most detailed. The way you explain how each connector works is a life saver.
Thank you, happy to help🙌
Your a life saver. That back left bolt can go to hell though..
😁 thank you, you should see one on n52 engines, even worse😁
Watching this video and the only bolt left is that one and I think it’s stripped 😭

It is a long and tedious job. but certainly doable. i took me 3 days (about 3 hours each day), and i also changed my spark plugs.

I got a 2017 640i and my left angel eye is not working, any ideas? Do I need to replace the whole assembly?
Great im just having a issue getting rhe new one on idk something not aligned in the back ill get back to it in the korning its cold in nys idk what made me take it out during this weather im just fed up of the noise
It depends on the car some chasis are deeper some are narrowed making the back nuts event harder to take off.
Fantastic DIY clear video not much content on F06 640s , more 640s please
Thank you, what would interest you?

I’m trying to buy El ring brand but it only shows the main gasket, I wonder if they sell the 3 smaller gaskets under a different name.🤔🤔
It’s valve cover gasket kit always comes with main seal and 3 other seals
Great help!Really hope to see S55 Valve Cover Gasket replacement 🤣
It’s coming real soon, probably by the end of this week😉
@@Zeiten Excellent!I‘m also going to replace in this weekend。But not very confident。 Valve cover planned to order after successful removal。
On s55 usually replacing whole valve cover, pcv tends to fail sooner than gasket, it’s very similar just more stuff to remove
This guy is spot on..I followed the video and this was easy
Great video!!

The technician stated oil was leaking from the valve cover onto exhaust manifold and may become a fire hazard. I have close to 75k miles on it.

Did you remove fuse before starting or not necessary?
Nope, I personally never remove any fuses on any repairs, the only thing necessary sometimes is to disconnect negative battery cable that’s it
