      Donnie, do your homework brother, Mattel and several of their designers have a bit of a checkered past too. See for example the case in which Mattel was accused of stealing graphics and other design cues for a customized racing truck from a gentlemen's website. See the case FJ40 Baja Edition design. Mattel was accused of stealing a trademarked design, website graphics, and trade dress from those Baja racers. Not the only story and not the only case in which Mattel designers and guys on lower level design teams have been accused of stealing ideas from customizers who bring stuff to conventions. There use to be a handful of websites where customizers showcased their best stuff. Come to find out Mattel designers had a hand in creating the websites. For the purpose of stealing design cues. I can't support thieves either. But if you think Mattel designers design everything from their own heads, you've got to be kidding me. :-)

    Although I agree with you, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a market for these "factory customs" in the future. Like it or not, it's a part of hot wheels history and people love collecting unique pieces of hot wheels history.

    • @HotWheelsTV
      @HotWheelsTV  5 лет назад

      There is a market and people are paying way too much for them. They are just cars that are stolen from the line....

  • @CVetteMan1111
    @CVetteMan1111 6 лет назад +3

    I tend to look at Hot Wheels cars like I look at paint canvases. Some of these custom cars coming off of the lines are as beautiful if not more beautiful than what Mattel higher-ups legitimately commission to be made. These "guys on the lines" have imagination's too. Just because they sling Hot Wheels together for a living does not mean they aren't still artists or imagineers . Some days I think designated designers could take a cue from the boys in the back. Their "factory freak" designs or whatever you guys want to call them, are still attracting attention. If people are willing to pay those kinds of prices for something an anonymous unsung factory worker slung together, that should tell Mattel something. Yes, Mike is right in a way, not everyone can be a "designated designer." I am sure Mattel is not happy that "their ideas" are getting shown up by those "nobodies in the back." I am also certain that customizers who bring their own designs to conventions and shows are not happy that designated Hot Wheels designers and guys on lower level design teams have more than once been accused of stealing ideas. Many artists have claimed that designers have come to view their work in person at conventions while "looking for inspiration." That seems pretty interesting! One could interpret that as "I'm here to steal your ideas." I mean the artists that these designated designers have taken ideas from don't get the credit. Once upon a time, there were a few pages where customizers showcased their work out in the open only to have their ideas duplicated by Mattel. I have heard more than enough stories to know that it all goes both ways. If you think everything Hot Wheels designers design comes from their own heads, you better think again! The casting itself might be unique,. But in reality, castings are just shapely canvases. I hear one statement from collectors more than anything else when it comes to customized creations... "That is the way Hot Wheels should have done it!" I think it is high time Willy Wonka opened the doors to his dilapidated chocolate factory and let new imagination's in. Hot Wheels brining back Barbie Corvettes? Really?

    Hey Mike, I think the best way to alert eBay buyers is to create a PSA message on eBay. Lots of people make test listings that say "do not bid" and set the buy it now price at a ridiculous amount. An attractive picture of one of those "Unspun Prototypes" With the words Do Not Bid in the description, a really high buy it now price, and a nice PSA message alerting potential buyers that most of those unspun cars are definitely not prototypes but customs and are in most cases stolen assembly plant parts. Might make people think twice about bidding on them.

    Hi Mike. Thanks for the video on this issue. I steer clear of Malaysian Hot Wheels sellers on ebay for this exact reason. It is a real sad thing, because Malaysian people are very nice and this really tarnishes everyone with the same brush. Unfortunately you also get buyers from other countries importing these from the Malaysian sellers and then reselling them in their country as "unspun prototypes" or legitimate supers. I noticed from observations that a lot of these models tend to have scratches or imperfections on them, which to me suggests they are possibly factory rejects that have been re-purposed? Cheers =)

  • @reggie3one

    How about those cars that have different wheel variations or tampo errors? Those weren't part of the schedule neither. How about those cars that weren't STH or TH but came in a card that has a TH logo or had the TH logo on the tampo, like for example most recently the Fiat 500 which had the TH logo on the card but wasn't a STH? Or how about those cars which have the TH logo as part of the tampo, but are not considered TH? Pretty sure those weren't part of the production schedule, yet were still produced and nothing was said by Mattel, and yet they're considered errors or variations on price guides. As much as I might agree with some that say that these factory workers are stealing, we must ask ourselves as to way this is happening? We all know that they get paid pennies compared to a normal factory worker in the US. Some might say 'you gotta do whatcha gotta do to put food on the table', and seeing what they get paid to work there, I really cant blame them. Mattel can come up with some ideas on how to control this and yet they turn their heads. This industry is so fast paced, where employees have to have a quick hand eye coordination in order to keep the lines running, I'm not surprised they're able to sneak some out without no one noticing. Totally agree with Cvetteman1111, designers run out of ideas and end up being copycats sometimes, instead of taking a page off the ideas they see and creating something of their own which ends up looking better, much like what customizers do. Personally I would know what a prototype is or looks like. Mattel came up with their own "prototype" series which in my opinion was as ridiculously priced as the "fakes" we see on the internet. I like unspun stuff and I try to find some of them online, but I also control my own budget and don't go into a bidding war just to have it. Just my two cents...

    • @HotWheelsTV
      @HotWheelsTV  5 лет назад +2

      Errors and variations are cars that were actually produced and not stolen and sold as something they are not. They are also only .94 and not $300 or $400. We can argue this for hours (which I don't have). This episode is to inform collectors what the truth is about the cars they are seeing for sale that are not what they are told they are. I have people write me AFTER they buy one and then ask me about it and get really upset that they spent all that money on something that is a bunch of stolen parts with no value. And Mattel does have a task force to curtail this problem . When they get caught, they get fired, but then someone else does it only because there are people that will keep buying this stuff. ... And by the way... If you have any of these cars, I would wash my hands if you've touched them. How do you think they're getting them out of the building when there is a metal detector...????

    I dont think theres a diffrence between "model shop guys and assembly line guys work. The both use hot wheels parts to put togather something cool and diffrent. They just need to advertise it correctly.
    FACTORY CUSTOM.

      There is a HUGE difference between people stealing parts from the assembly line and selling them and someone in the "Model Shop" designing and MAKING the parts. And that is why I did that episode.

    Found something even worse than these fake supers, found some blatant knock offs that are called hot wheel. the cards are a joke the front has shark bite, bubble gummer and another hot wheels casting on it. they use all sorts of old cards from other toys some say they transform on the back and loads of other rubbish. They also have plain bases and what look like old matchbox wheels.

      Yes, I have seen a few of these and actually have a couple. It seems they do it quickly, sell a lot and by the time Mattel gets to them, they close up. They've made their quick money and move on. You know it's really easy to do in some countries that it's hard to track these type of things down.

    My girlfriends little brother had about 100 hot wheels cars that he gave to my daughter. We were playing with them and I noticed this really cool funny car. When I went online to find current funny cars for sale, I saw what looks like my exact car selling for hundreds!!! It looks like the 271 blue funny car. Is there a way to authenticate it? He would have been 7 in 1995, so the dates match up for someone who just got it to play with. Really interested if someone could tell me if it's real.

      Once it's out of its 271 package it has no value.

    What if there is no production number on the base?

    • @HotWheelsTV
      @HotWheelsTV  6 лет назад

      As to what or when? If there is no control number on one of these so-called Employee Customs, it can't be traced to the day it was snagged from the line.... Is that what you are asking?
