    Try the iron or copper wash wiped back over the forest trees stamp you use on the Minnesota applique, I bet it'll give it some cool depth. Also over wiped back on the wood stamp I bet would look like actual wood. I think I am going to try it on leaf veins I press into greenware. So glad you made this vid, I've wanted to try washes for a year. Are the washes food safe?

    • @jennycaldwell1
      @jennycaldwell1 5 лет назад

      Hare Typer Mayco says they are, but if you use them in combination, you’ll need to test them.

    • @ccchill6129
      @ccchill6129 5 лет назад +1

      Jenny Caldwell, how do you test them?

  • @benpatterson4452
    @benpatterson4452 5 лет назад +20

    Jon, you could try using a small atomizer (Poor man's airbrush) to spray a thin layer of the wash, over the entire outside. This can give glazes, a nice speckled effect.
    Also as a warning to everyone, manganese, cobalt and copper are heavy metals. Use caution, when using these materials, and do not use them on food/ drink surfaces without testing first.

    • @hannahpumpkins4359
      @hannahpumpkins4359 5 лет назад +1

      Literally every single glaze on pottery has some metal component to it. SMH... There are some that should not come into contact with food (especially glazes made in Mexico) such as many of the mirror-finish glazes, but in America glazes are tested and will have a warning on the container id they are not food safe. But literally every blue glazed piece of pottery you see will have cobalt as a glaze component, a green glazed piece will have copper, etc.

    • @kimalonzo7387
      @kimalonzo7387 5 лет назад

      @@hannahpumpkins4359 what does SMH stand for?🤔

    • @benpatterson4452
      @benpatterson4452 5 лет назад +5

      @@kimalonzo7387 It's internet shorthand for "Shaking my head".
      Hannah, yoh are correctz that many ceranic glazes do have metals in them. However, those metals are only used in quantities that the glaze can safetly hold. For things like cobalt, copper and cadmium, that is only a couple percent of the total recipe. Anything beyond that the metals can leach out.
      Commercial glazes do go through rigorous testing, but the stability of those glazes only applies if they are used based in the manufacturer's mixing and application instructions. For instance layering to stable glazes can result in one that's not.
      In the case of this video, oxides were being applied over a glaze. There is no way of knowing what percentage of those oxides was being used, in a given area.
      Such experimentation is fine on the exteriors, but on surfaces that come in contact with food and drink, a lot of testing should be done.

    I really like using these washes to emphasize the grooves/space from stamps or fabric pressed into the clay. I usually paint the wash all over, and then wipe it off (like the black gloss on the Minnesota mugs). Then I put a glaze on top, and it just adds a little bit of depth. I want to try the Rutile! I love that yellow!

    What fun -- watching you experiment with all these new tools and substances!
    Very enthused about the texture mats. I really like both of those textures, especially the honeycomb, since I'm a wanna-beekeeper! Though my own potting experience is still quite minimal, I've done a couple of pieces using textures. Very happy with the results.
    Now I need to decide which products to get for myself! HA!
    I figured they must have more textures, so I visited their site to check them out. The Retro Squares mat looks awesome! It has a very psychedelic-flower-power-hippie era feel (my generation!). I'll probably feel the urge to wear go-go boots whenever I use it! ;)
    Love the blue/green combos, especially the darker hues. I also favored that sort of iridescent, multi-color drip effect you got on the far right piece in the "aurora green over washes" group.
    Right now I'm getting very excited. I'll be seeing a bunch of your stuff in person next month, when I get to visit Mocha Monkey! Can barely wait for that adventure!!! Saving up my nickels and dimes, so I can grab some more JTP pieces to go along with my Twisted Kickstarter Mug! ~Debz

Also a recommended video would be one on slip decoration I've saw beautiful pieces done with this technique and i can't find a good informative video on how to do it. I'm new to pottery and trying to start up building a stock at the moment and I'm pretty much self taught. But i aspire to be making pottery full time. Your videos I've been watching nearly everyday for the last few weeks. You help me so much with your information and also your enthusiasm! You're an excellent teacher. Please keep making these fun videos I'm sure it helps many people just like myself:) thank you very much. From Scotland. Keep making cool pots and inspiring!

      Mary Max KATS I bought a cheap fire tablet (like $25 on prime day) and use an app called Wunderlist that lets me make notes and attach pics. I can even share my lists with others so we can see each other’s results. It’s soooo much easier then trying to use a regular note book. I even bought a cheap waterproof “case” (basically a glorified heavyweight ziplock) so I can use it in the studio and not worry about getting it wet or dirty. For less then $35 it’s made a huge difference (& I can keep music on it for while I’m throwing). You could use do the same thing with a smartphone and similar case.
