One truck to avoid bleeding under the masking tape is to apply a thin coat of the finish that is under the tape onto the top seam of the tape. That way what bleads under the tape is more of the finish that is under the tape and it seals the seam. Even if you scrape back to the tape Sean before you move on it will still seal the seam. It also reduces pull off while removing the tape, giving a nice crisp line between colors. What I am referring to is when you sealed the binding then taped it off. Reseal the top of the tape past th seam a bit.
I’ve seen sandblasting work for the raised grain look. It shouldn’t leave any scratches like the wire brushes do. Can be a bit messy, but it’s cheap to try it out if you already own an adequate air compressor.
I did this wire brush burnishing effect on a wenge pickguard for my last tele build and absolutely love it. Got the idea from a box Mike Pekovich made a while back. Super cool though.
A thin spit-coat can reduce the end grain absorption to give you the same effect as the parallel grain contrast. I did much of this in the 80s and 90s and there are so many tricks to learn.
Dude, I totally feel ya! I got it about two weeks ago and bought two. I love them so much, I’m gonna buy two more. I use so much less solvent now, plus they look cool haha. There’s a link in the description.
I have a feeling your channel is gonna really blow up here soon dude, and that is awesome. Congrats dude. I have watched thousands of hours of guitar building videos this past few years, and granted not many of them were acoustic builds, (i know this one is electric of course) but i am learning new things watching your videos, so Thank you, and keep them coming. You gonna join in with Josh and poke fun of Rhett too on your videos? Josh did a pretty funny one this morning on Rhett's channel. I hope Rhett is all healed by the time this killer guitar is done for him, what an awesome "welcome back to playing after an injury" gift!!
Thanks for the kind words man! Yeah I enjoyed the hell out of those guys this morning. I think he’ll be back in no time based on my conversations with him today.
Guys this is beyond cool - you are both very entertaining and easy to follow in explaining the process. Please keep this going after Rhetts guitar, especially with Electric’s. New Subscriber based on this video! Take care and stay safe Gents!
Such good videos. Matt is so lucky to be able to work under such an awesome builder. I wish I knew some one I could work under like that. I love woodworking and feel I could build a decent electric but I feel acoustic guitars would be a bit out of my league. Thanks for the videos Chris, I’ve been learning a lot from your videos.
I loved the music in this video. You are outlayers because it is weird to find latin american/african or brazilian music in english speaking videos. Great!!
Not at all. It wouldn’t work that way. If I had roughed you the body, then the router bearing for the binding wouldn’t have a smooth surface to ride on, and would make for sloppy binding.
But then I’d still need to level the binding to the body, and that would either erase my work on weathering the sides, and make me sand uneven binding as the sandpaper would ride on the bumpy sides.
Wow, looks stunning! I think I’ll do that on my diy accoustasonic inspired build: mahogany body, birds’eye maple top & flamed maple neck! What miniral spirits do you use to wipe down? I have some degreaser from when I needed to paint the windowsills here, but I think that’s too concentrated & I don’t wanna dilute it with thinner or water.
You guys have great production skills on your vids.....great quality video, sound, lighting and editing. You could probably give lessons on making videos.....congrats....
A pleasure to watch! Great looking guitar. I have two inexpensive electric basses and one has the shittier clear coat I have ever seen so I might sand it down to the wood and use your process... although with my experience, I'll surely screw up... but it's always fixable.
Loving your work area man! Man cave they say! Haha I say that's where you make art. Is that Zebrawood by the way? Nice build man and great video production! Subbed you automatically! 😊
The wood grain is formed by alternating layers of soft spring/summer growth, and harder autumn/winter growth. Wire brushing, sandblasting, or blowtorching, will cut into the soft growth allowing it to take more finish and exaggerate the grain pattern. If you sand after your initial staining, you remove the stain from the high spots, and leave it in the low spots, making the pattern even more exaggerated.
You hit the nail on the head about relicing. I can't stand it but ya got SRV, Van Halen, and Tommy Emmanuel. The greats who generally play or played, defaced or poorly cared for guitars except Tommy. His defacing had purpose but how sad to see the finish stripped on a fine instrument. Mine are all mint but maby scratching them up will make me a better player... nah. 🎸
So far (as if it won't continue), that thing is looking beautiful. PS: You , really, need to employ the Image Stabilization. All the bouncing up and down and all around is making me dizzy. 🥴🥴🥴
It's not on them. RUclips has changed the policy and is forcing ads down the throats of creators. They have to turn them off by hand after video is up. The process is purposefully pain in the ass too
I have RUclips premium which costs me a small amount every month and never see a single commercial. The content and access to all of it is worth a lot to me and I consider it a good deal to be able to do my part to support it with Premium and yet not have to deal with ads. I don't expect RUclips to be free. TV used to be free - but it had ads too. Netlix is not free but has no ads- I also consider it a good deal. If it wasn't of much value to me I wouldn't complain about it I just wouldn't be using it.

Yeah! I learned the same trick in art school.
The pre-sanding look reminded me of my Peavy T-60.
The guitar is ridiculous... stunning. And Matt "cinematography" on this was outstanding. Love the fade-in/out shots. Great job guys!!
I am an amateur guitar builder and I really appreciate your sharing of knowledge! Thank you.
Man that's going to be one hell of a guitar! Looking incredible so far.
I could watch videos like this ALL DAY.
I’ve seen sandblasting work for the raised grain look. It shouldn’t leave any scratches like the wire brushes do. Can be a bit messy, but it’s cheap to try it out if you already own an adequate air compressor.
I was about to make the same comment. Quicker, cheaper, and would work more evenly on the sides of the guitar.
Hopefully this guitar will make it when Rhet is fully recovered :-).

Every time I think I have all the tools I need, I see something new. Like that sprayer! Need to get one for my shop!

@@DriftwoodGuitars hey could you tell me where I can find them? I need them too lol thx

Go Team! You bring your brain power eye detail and hand touch to create an extraordinary instrument 🎸!!
thank you Chris and Matt
You've just taught me the stuff I've been needing to learn to start my first Partscaster project!! Thank you!! Got yourself a subscriber

Greetings from Stockholm , Sweden.. Really like your work.. 👌🤘
Killer finish man. And the fact that you referenced Bob Ross puts you in automatic 'cool dude' territory.

If you add rhett's page in the description, i'll check it out. It's cool to see you do this process, it's looking really nice.
The video had not even started and I instantly hit the Subscribe button...
Awesome man! Glad to have you aboard
I loved the music in this video. You are outlayers because it is weird to find latin american/african or brazilian music in english speaking videos. Great!!
Just sick. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You'll have it done by the time Rhett's collar bone heals. Looks great!
Looks cool.
Lovely!
Whenever you say ‘Ceruse’, I can’t help thinking of Cyd Charise - doesn’t do my blood pressure any good!
I would say, most of the trouble with your
blood pressure, is just your Age. 😲🙄😏
Lookin good guys!
If you had it to do over, would you have done the wire brushing and staining before you glued in the binding?
Not at all. It wouldn’t work that way. If I had roughed you the body, then the router bearing for the binding wouldn’t have a smooth surface to ride on, and would make for sloppy binding.
@@DriftwoodGuitars but you could have cut the slot, did the machinations, then glued in the binding.
But then I’d still need to level the binding to the body, and that would either erase my work on weathering the sides, and make me sand uneven binding as the sandpaper would ride on the bumpy sides.
An yes that's true. Your way was best. Should have known. Love your videos, covet your guitars.
I just spent a lot of time thinking about it haha.
Bit different, but Shu sugi (????) burning the wood first, allows you to brush out the soft parts. Similar gain pop/texture effect
For the same results and less sweat.. Pick up a wire wheel to use on a variable speed drill 😉

A really cool video!
Digging the channel! Oh and I have 4 of those stewmac tape dispensers and I think I need 4 more. 😂

I love the music over the montages! Who is that?
Sweet
Yeah! 🤘✨👏
Craftsman restorer or the porter cable one!
Cool content, way better than t.v. thanks!
Great video! I have a question. Why the wire brushes after getting the body sanded? Won’t the bristles scratch the surface?
Have you seen "The Restorer"? It's a lot less expensive than the makita wire brush thing.
So much better than relicing . This technique shows so much visual bang for the buck!
Loving your work area man! Man cave they say! Haha I say that's where you make art. Is that Zebrawood by the way? Nice build man and great video production! Subbed you automatically! 😊
I’m curious, what was the purpose of using the wire brushes after sanding the first time?
The wood grain is formed by alternating layers of soft spring/summer growth, and harder autumn/winter growth. Wire brushing, sandblasting, or blowtorching, will cut into the soft growth allowing it to take more finish and exaggerate the grain pattern. If you sand after your initial staining, you remove the stain from the high spots, and leave it in the low spots, making the pattern even more exaggerated.
The back looks like a nice piece of oak
What makita tool are you Goya talking about?
What editing software do you guys use?
Can anyone tell me what the piece of Spanish sounding music at the start of the video is called? 🤔
Not sure if I missed this...but what type of wood is the body made from? Grain looks like ash?
Correct, it’s Ash with a quilted maple drop top
@@DriftwoodGuitars very cool, looking forward to see how it turns out. Any recommendations for getting a similar grain highlight on alder?
I got ash
Wire brush
Ceruse crush
Wish I had the money to commission a bass guitar from you. Dang that would be nice.
3:40 - "Makita makes a tool that does this." Ohhh-kay? What are we talking about there?

why not sand blast to for more even grain raise you guys are killing me work smarter not harder

Bespoke umpa-lumpa fingers. 😂
You have the same sweet face as Rhett!
Pffftttt yet another tele
YOU'LL BE FINE, GET SOME REST
Just get it out together before his collarbone is back together.
But..you learned from success…..
7 ads in a 15min video is just stupid. I hope you are getting lots of money from you tube. But I am done. Going to un-sub
It's not on them.
RUclips has changed the policy and is forcing ads down the throats of creators. They have to turn them off by hand after video is up. The process is purposefully pain in the ass too
Wow, I only had a 15sec video at the start. Which is fine I think (especially as it was content related; about a guitar store).
Positive attitude, smiling, having fun, all shows up in your work! Excellent job fellas ✌🏼
As if we have any control over that haha.
