    I preordered 2 of them to replace my single VTF-2 MK5. I’ve been wanting taller speaker stands for my CCB-8s. So this was a quintuple whammy for me and my setup: great starting price, on sale, going from single to dual subs, taller speaker stands, and from a highly reputable company.
    I am very excited.

    I love my VTF-3 MK5 subwoofer. Drove up to Irvine and picked it up directly. $799 back in 2014.. incredible value and Extreme Bassaholic Room Size rating. TN1 will be even more insane. only the Tone Winner subs can compete in terms of bang for the buck. The Tone Winner SW-D6000 is a beast that outperforms most other subs.. would love to see the TN1 vs SW-D6000 REW results

    I’ve had the 15H since it was a new product. Since then, I’ve done the senior downsizing routine, so it’s now in a room about half the size. The other new development is the move to multiple subs. Over the past few years. One wonders what the impact of adding the TN1 to the existing 15H would be for volumes likely lower than the average Audioholic listening space.

    I have owned the VTF-15MK2 for about 5 years, awesome sub, HSU makes great subs. To be honest though I prefer the side ports on the VTF-15MK2 for ease of access. Also I applaud the new model for the extended bass response but the truth is there is not a lot of content in that extreme low range anyway, as it is I have to turn mine down when watching movies vs just listening to music. I’m glad HSU is further developing the product line but I won’t be selling my VTF-15MK2 anytime soon, extremely happy with it.

    I saw an older thread where someone showed the CEA-2010 charts with THD numbers of a HSU VTF-15 MK2 compared to a Rythmik FV-15HP. Compared to the HSU the Rythmik had extremely low distortion, especially below about 30hz. Can someone with more knowledge explain if THD really even matters at those lowest frequencies, and does it affect the sound signature of the sub? The specs on the Rythmik seem amazing, but buying dual HSU would save me $1k, which could go towards other gear upgrades. Thoughts?

Which means +12 dB at like 15 Hz, + 9dB at 20 Hz, +6 dB at 25 Hz, +3 dB at 30 Hz and go at 0 dB flat till the crossover, without harmonics or port chuffing, that can actually go to 115ish dB at the flat response and +12 dB to the lower extension, meaning 127 dB at 15 Hz, clean sinewave.

      Based on the CEA-2010 burst data, they both have similar mid-bass output which is what you would term 'club bass.' If you like punchy bass in that range, you might actually try to get one of the last Hsu VTF-15h MKIIs which will have a bit more output in that range.

    Gene, I am so excited to see a new product from Hsu since my system is all Hsu subs (ULS15mk2, VTF3mk4, VTF15H.) I have a question for you, although if you say "wait for our review of the TN1," I will understand. (But any advice you can give me now would also be appreciated.) I was considering upgrading all of my subs to the same model for more consistency but also to see if I could get performance improvements. Now I am considering two options: (1) two or three Hsu TN-1s (because I want the smaller footprint,) or (2) two JTR RS1s. I know the price differences, so please disregard price if you are kind enough to respond to me. (I actually want at least two Perlistens, R212s or better, but that does get too expensive for me.) My question is: will the JTRs give me better infrasonics AND tighter bass (better group delay) than the new Hsu subs? Or am I better off saving myself a few grand because the Hsus will give me almost or the same performance, in every metric, as two JTRs?

    • @jameslarson2277
      @jameslarson2277 6 месяцев назад +2

      The JTRs will have superior group delay, but probably only in very deep frequencies. The Hsu's group delay will spike up around port tuning, but the port tuning frequency on these subs are so low that I don't expect it will have a major impact on the sound. The nature of the low-end roll-off and the way you calibrate the system will have a much greater impact on the sound than group delay. Either an all-JTR or all-Hsu system would be great. I would guess that if you like how your VTF-15h MKII sounds, you will like the VTF-TN1.

    Tempted to add one of these for 2-channel / mains sub. I already have a SVS SB16 and I like it, but there is no way to avoid the built-in DSP delay and it doesn't have high-level inputs, so that makes 2 channel direct listening a massive logistical challenge. For bass-managed and distance-processed listening, the built-in DSP isn't a problem because all the speakers and the sub are getting delay correction anyway. Your receiver just subtracts 2-3 feet from the physical sub distance and everything evens out. But when you go direct, there's no way to avoid that the SVS DSP has a 3 ms delay, and it sounds weird and phasey. So I'm realizing that while the SB16 is great for movies or processed music, if I want to go direct (and I DEFINTELY need to go direct, because it makes a big difference thanks to all receivers' crap internal re-sampling), the SB16 is the wrong tool for the job. A "dumb" all-analog sub that digs as deep as the SB16, like this, is a much better solution. I've been there and done that with REL and they are an absolute joke. HSU is mighty tempting, enough that I almost regret buying the SB16 in the first place.

    I run two Adam Sub12's in my home theater and chose them primarily because of the downfiring ports. I bought them also to save on space. Surprisingly, my Rythmik F18 and FV15HP2 have been collecting dust ever since. I may end up selling them with how well these Adam's have performed with their insanely tight, controlled bass, unstressed by anything thrown at them. This new HSU reminds me of the Adam sub footprint and I wish them success with their new flagship product.

    I’ve owned two VTF-15H mkII subs for several years and I love them. Having the ports on the bottom of the TN1 seems less accessible to seal them for the variable tuning frequencies. The subs can maybe be tipped for access but that could get tricky in some room locations. I also wouldn’t want to move my sub, even a little, when listening to the different port/EQ settings, nor upset the alignment of my speakers if changing the port settings while using the TN1s as speaker stands. I’ll wait for the review but it feels a little like if it ain’t broke then why fix it, especially for frequencies with such limited content at the (small) expense of more “real-world” frequencies. Maybe I’m just getting old!

      I@@walterpen371 I also still have a lot of my 70s (and 80s/90s/00s...) gear, much of it in storage but some of it still in frequent use. Like classic cars, they might not keep up with all of today's top gear but it's still fun to take them out for a spin occasionally! I would definitively consider the new HSU TN1 if/when I need an additional sub or subs. I'm just questioning the the value of touting a "feature" that makes the ports harder to access when the ports are designed to be plugged or unplugged to taste. That said, I never had to pull my cat or my kids (ha ha) out of the ports of my VTF-15HmkII or maybe I'd feel differently. 😀 I wonder if hardwood, carpet, and concrete or plywood subfloors will now impact the sound more than with the front firing ports? Most people are probably set-and-forget with the ports like I am, but now you almost have to be, or plan on your significant other helping tilt the subs when plugging or unplugging the foam bungs, especially if the sub is in a tight location of the room. The cabinet dimensions being more room friendly is great on its own, but for HSU's early teaser info to say it's now better as a speaker stand, when subs are ideally meant to be placed anywhere in the room where they sound best, is potentially promoting some less-than-ideal set ups except maybe in the rare rooms where the ideal subwoofer locations match the mains speaker locations perfectly, and where all listening chairs and speaker height dimensions are the same. Unlikely. I say just market this as the kickin' beast subwoofer that it no doubt is, but one that will now take a little more effort to adjust the ports for VTF in exchange for output at a few Hz lower than the 15HmkII. If it's the affordable monster we expect it to be then so be it. Now I'm even more anxious for the full review!
