As a former bicycle road racer and mountain biker as well as 10 years of adventure racing, along with motorcycle motocross and observed trials, I can say the bias against e-bikes by some bicycle "Purists" and trail builders is totally unfounded. These are not motorcycles, but bicycles with assist. The pedal action is not the same as twisting a throttle as far as "tearing up the trail" goes! I find I can get as good a workout with an e-bike as I do on my Moots 29er mountain bike. I can go further in less time and climb more. Every "Purist" I've met who's against e-bikes has either zero or little time riding one.
Our mtb group range from 37 to 57 years of age. We all ride eBikes and it levels the ability curve. We all go at the same pace, ride the same trails and climbs and no-one gets left behind.

@@TheHarleyrulz I got the haibike full 7 lt in Feb 2020. It has the Bosch cx motor with power tube 500 battery. It has been super dependable. Not a problem. There are so many positives to having an E bike. I converted my mountain bike with the Hilltopper ebike kit. At first it greatly extended my riding range. I began to venture farther from my house. It has a 10 mile range. Now I could make the trek more easily to the nature park 6 miles away. Now it's so great to run an errand or go to the grocery store quickly and return quickly. If I have a little more time or I'm in the mood, I will pedal to the grocery store and back. But I would say the best thing about my converted ebike is now much longer pedal rides, knowing i can motor home! I pedal out to the other nature reserve, which is 9 miles away. And then about a 4 mile pedal around. And then I can pedal back home or motor home, depending on how I feel. A couple of weeks ago I did the full pedal. It was awesome. This past Saturday, I peddled out and peddled around the reserve. And then I motored home. Having an ebike is so versatile! Only pluses! 👍🏽
I just purchased the Giant Trance e+3 a few months ago. Previously, my fit buddies would invite me on epic rides which I would always bail on because I wasn't in shape. Now I keep up with them and give myself just enough assist to keep up (I'm still working bloody hard). At the top, I have the energy left in the tank to be focused on the downhill. I've never been more happy riding a bike. Also, one major benefit of this e-bike in particular is that because it's heavy, it stays really planted on the downs and plows through everything. So much fun!
Ya, I got the same bike. Love it so far. I pass my fit buddies then meet them coming back down.... and then I do another lap!! not sure how much they like me getting in 2 laps to their 1...lol... but they keep inviting me!!
@@b.w.1386 Haha nice! No excuse NOT to do another lap. One of my buddies is fit enough to ride all day, so he's more than happy I got an ebike so he has someone to ride with while the others are bagged and sitting in front of the campfire.
It took me 3 years to persuade my son that an E-MTB is the way to ride. Pushing your bike up a steep hill or even worse getting a pick-up to take you to the top, is not riding. He gets it now and is into his third E-MTB. Let's talk motors, so my first E-Bike had a Gen 3 Bosch CX and it was ruined by water ingress within 1,500 miles, it was replaced under warranty with another 24 months guarantee. I sold it for very nearly what I paid for it in lock down. Then I bought a bike with a Shimano E6000 motor, and I think it was a 504 Wh battery. The motor was gutless, and the battery used to die within a few miles of it showing two bars. On my 60th birthday last year I bought myself an Orbea Wild FS H25 with a 625 Wh battery and a Bosch CX Gen 4 motor. It's been brilliant and I've covered just over 3,000 miles on it. I have made some changes to it, to replace some of the less reliable components. The biggest spend was on wheels as the supplied Shimano hubs had unsealed bearings. I now have Hope Pro4 hubs on Fortus rims built by a well-known UK Bike Shop. The only other parts I've had to replace is, chains, cassettes, brake pads and discs (rotors if you are from the USA). I have checked all the suspension bushes, forks and rear shock and they are all working spot on with zero maintenance other than torquing the bolts. I am still using the original dropper post which is said to be poor quality, I weigh 98kg around 16 stones and it's been faultless. I have done extensive research on motor reliability and found out the Bosch CX gen 4 is top of the list. Brose has had some bad press, but even though they've sorted some issues it appears they are unreliable. Shimano appears to be at the bottom of the reliability list which surprises me. Yamaha are just above Shimano in the reliability stakes.

If it wasn't for e-bikes most likely I wouldn't be getting exercise daily. One other thing that I couldn't do on my traditional bike is to go shopping. I'll put on my backpack travel 9 miles each away to my local Costco and return back with 40 pounds of groceries. On average I'm logging 2000 miles per year. Just went out for my first ride with my wife today. I think an e bike may be in her future! She was fine on the downs, but the e bike would let us ride some similarly on the ups
I’m a 61 yo that competed nationally in bicycle trials back in the day. I was an avid mountain biker who recently developed Neuropathy. I can’t stand and pedal, at least for now. So I look forward to buying a e-bike this summer to get back out on the trails
Early onset arthritis in my knees has made riding a traditional MTB limiting. I really have to measure how much power I can lay down on steep sustained and punchy climbs. I bought a Kenevo SL and that's the support I needed to burn 1k calories each day.
73 y. o. ; been riding e-bikes for 6 years. First bike was a 2016 Haibike Sduro I got on sale for $3,100, as it was a clearance bike. I put >4K miles on on that bike before selling it. Since then, I've had 2 Giants which both had electrical issues, and am currently riding a Trek Rail 5 and a Luna X1 Enduro. The Rail is a '22 model I have modified to my preferences. Fork upgraded from 160mm to 170mm, and a coil shock to replace the standard air shock. I love this bike and am impressed with the quality. The Luna X1 Enduro is a rocket. Technically, it is a Class 3 as I removed the throttle. It was only $4.5K out the door from Lunacycles in El Segundo (CA). It's got 95nm of torque, and 2Kw battery. This bike hauls ass. I can easily leave my buddies behind if/when I want to. I know this video is all about Class 1 bikes, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from checking out the Lunacycle lineup; their mtb's are carbonfiber and they are equipped with Bafang motors, which are very reliable. Also, I have had excellent customer service from Luna when I required it. Anyway, it's just a thought. Happy trails.
I’m from Florida with the occasional trip to Nc and I’m starting to think a e mtb might be in my horizon. Seen a bunch at my local trails and everyone is having a blast. Where is there a good e mtb demo. So far I like the YT the best.
I also live in Fl. My husband and I just got EMTB. For starters don’t listen to the people who say you don’t need one in FL lol. I went with the Marin Alpin E1 and my husband went with the YT decoy 2 29 in (not mullet) He loves his bike and has no complaints. My only thing with my bike is it’s almost a little too aggressive on the geometry. FL has a lot of root filled uphills and I get a lot of tire pop ups while going up but I’ve just gotta get used to a bigger more powerful bike. There definitely confidence boosters compared to our analog bikes.
I don't know what type of rider you are, but if you push your YZ a little and ride on some technical terrain, you'll get a better workout on the motorcycle than a bike. The only thing I'm not sure of is you have a 4 stroke. I only ride 2 strokes, so your results may be different than mine.
Great video, as for the e bike haters that say they are motorcycles for lazy people, they have never ridding a 230 plus pound motorcyce in a 40 min moto or all day on a 100 plus mile back country ride.
Best Budget Mtn E-Bikes? Your review hit the nail on the head on this topic. Thanks very much; I’ve been thinking for 2 years now and recognize a few models in my budget, so good to know they still remain in the mix plus new ones I never thought or heard of 👍🏼🏆
I'm 60 and have been on eMTBs for over 3 years now. I ride almost everyday because the machine is so damned addictive. The ONLY drawback to eMTBs is the parts wear and maintenance which can get expensive. I have learned that some forks and shocks can be problematic for service and maintenance so, be aware of this when spec-ing out your purchase. I've put over 20,000km on my Powerfly and it is pretty much worn out so, this video has turned out to be kinda' useful. Thanks!
@@tonysadler5290 Linkglide is still just a fantasy where I live on the wet coast of Canazuela but, yes I will be looking for Deore cassettes going forward. I still have an SLX and a couple of chains to swap out. Always searching Pinkbike and Marketplace for discounted gear. Cheers!
@@tonysadler5290 Yes I was thinking of upgrading mine too, I saw it on the EMBN video. Currently on Sram GX which I'm not fond of but just bought a €400 XO cassette so will wear that out first... 😆
I have a lower back injury that prevents me from spending too much time on an analogue bike. My Trek Rail 5 has given me the opportunity to spend hours riding and even done a few races!
Funny. I got half way through watching this and pulled the trigger on the Niner. Hit play again and that was the next bike on your list. Now to wait for it to be delivered!!!
Great video. I have had long covid for 2 years. Before long covid, I rode 3-4 times a week, 15 to 20 miles each ride. Since long covid, my ability to ride my old bike is limited to maybe 2-3 mile rides, at most, with 2-3 day recovery. I am not looking at ebikes because I miss riding and I miss my friends who ride and I miss being out there. I will get the mean looks from the purists but an ebike will now enable me to ride again!
No one should hate the fact that you’re out enjoying riding bikes… battery or not! Get an E-bike and go shred!🤘🏻What are you considering? Or what did you get?
Also: If anyone ever spits at you for riding an ebike and says "you are cheating", even if you would be at full health", just remember: YOu are not competing, you are enjoying yourself!! And this is super important. Hard to ignore other people, but if somebody gets cocky, just ask them when you have started to compete with them and hop on the trail.
@@johngraham6506 Off you go! Just take it slow to start with :D The support of the motor makes you think it is going to be a super, if not, effortless ride. Though, you still gotta pedal. You will get used to it :) Awesome experience and I wish you all the best! Enjoy
I have a 2022 Niner Rip E9 and love it. I noticed what Jensen is selling is the 2021 Model Rip E9, but they are showing their 25% discount off the 2022 model of $6699. List on the 2021 $6295. That said there is little to no difference in the 21 to 22 and it’s a great bike at that price.
I agree the Trek Rail 5 is a great choice at its price point - but I’d go as far as saying 80% of us don’t need 160mm or more of travel or a set up that’s more enduro than cross country . I seriously considered buying the Trek rail 5 in red / black but as a Scott customer for years I purchased the Scott Strike eride 930 - mostly because Iv always loved the ability to change my suspension on the fly via the handle bars which being a cross county / street rider gives me huge advantages and the spec of the bike is still impressive while allowing me options to upgrade parts etc .
Great video. I am 50 and in decent shape for 50. Can climb 14 minutes straight shot. Better than most average people. Worse than many riders. I like the gruelling climbs. But I get more workout and out of breath of the descents on the North Shore. I am good for 2, maybe 3 climbs and an hour and a half riding. There are large parts of these mountains like Fromme that I simply will never see on an acoustic (just on RUclips). Have a kid and job. No time. Again - I am in ok physical shape. Would like to ride longer.
@@TopToBottomMTB I'm actually thinking of buying eMTB for a gravel riding. The full suspension looks comfy, and the motor will more than compensate for the added weight I think.
Still at very high prices. My 1st ebike was at 4000+,2nd 5000,3rd7000,it will be out of reach for even some retiree. Weight has not come down as much as price hike.
I am disabled on a fixed income. This summer I had to quit climbing. Ebike- pricing is out of reach. Going back to the road. 😢since when did 6000 bucks get affordable.
I'm 51 and will most likely start looking at e-bikes when I hit 60. For now though, I'm going to keep ridding my meat powered bike as long as I can. I just love the way it feels on the trail. When I've ridden e-bikes I love how easy it is to make it to the top of the trail. On the other hand, I hate how they feel going down the trail. With that said, another great video brother. Oh, what e-bike are you looking to get?
@@MajorBorris I used to think that as well. At your age I had just done the Dempster to Inuvik NT. Now that I consider my 50's my carefree youth I am thinking I will be getting an E Bike. Thinking it would be a good birthday present for my 70th birthday.
Just ordered a Niner RIP e9 from Jenson based on your recommendation. Can’t wait for delivery. Seemed like too good of a price to pass up for the package. Broke my leg on my dirt bike recently and will be using the ebike to rehab the leg. Will be my first ebike. Should be fun!
Great list! I'd been saving up and also sold my Ripley to go towards an ebike so I got an Oso. Should be here in two days! It was between that, a used 160e, the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay, and the Scott Ransom eRide 910. The 160e sounds a little exhausting if you're not hauling ass downhill and has that really noisy EP8 motor, the Powerplay has too low of a bottom bracket (lots of big rocks on the trails here in Phoenix), and the Ransom eRide is only available in the 920 version here in the states. Tried seeing if I could get one from overseas but it's too much of a headache. Looking forward to putting some miles on the Oso!!
Ebike Positive - don't pay for lifts just ride uphill free :) Also you can still work yourself hard on trails w Ebike just as much - you just get more miles doing it in same time. An analog biker that doesn't hate ebikes.
I’m 68 years old. I appreciate the power of my EMTB especially in the mountains. In the winter and more moderate terrain I ride my fat bike. It’s a lot of fun. I was bike packing in the early 80’s. This was before it was cool and before they started to restrict mountain bike in National Parks and other places. This was great and also bad as I ended up on some trails that were very unsuitable for loaded mountain bikes.
I have disability and I had to sell my motorcycle, & I bought an EMTB, but bought a cheap $4500 LUNA X2 Ludicrous. Suspension stinks, just so many corners cut by LUNA for the price point.
Question: have you ridden any of these bikes? i.e. are these reviews and recommendations based on your own personal experience or are you just reading off the sales-card? I'm not judging you by whether you're talking from personal / actual experience vs sales-bumff - but for people looking to invest thousands of dollars (especially here in NZ where our income doesn't match the international exchange rate) it's really important to know whether you're talking from personal experience. And if you ARE talking from personal experience, it would be great to know your personal dimensions (i.e. height, reach, weight) vs the size of the bike you rode. Otherwise it's as good as saying that a Ducati 748SP is an absolute weapon while not mentioning that anyone less than 5 ft 6 will be in pain riding this bike for more than an hour ...
Thanks for your comment! I’ve ridden 3 out of the 10 bikes in the video and the 3 had different motors. The video is not meant to be a review, simply highlighting what I consider to be some of the best value e-MTBs out there. Simply my opinion… Just like if my friend came to me and asked: Ben, I want to get an e-bike that won’t break the bank… which ones should I look at! I’m 5’9” and would ride a medium. I like a 450ish mm reach. The rest is personal preference as far as components and brand. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these.
I like the idea of a Emtb...but for those prices i rather get an Honda CRF 300, a Royal Enfield Himalayan... But i would feel comfortable expending like 2k for a dual suspension emtb, till that day i will keep pedaling and/or riding a proper dirt motorbike.
And you forgot to include Cube Stereo Hybrid 120/140. Can’t beat that price for the specs and Bosch CX Gen4 motor. Haibike also. I don’t like list, not because of the bikes, but because it is not so budget aware
Good list of 10+4. I would include the Orbea Rise H30 and the Trek Fuel EXe 9.5 as well, even though the latter are more expensive but still a good value for what they offer, IMHO (component upgrades are a thing for all these anyway).
The Rise and Ex-E are mid-assist bikes with a little less torque and lighter batteries… they’re top of the food chain in that category and I’m currently working on a 2023 light weight E-MTB list coming soon… Cheers!
Great summary! I was glad you put the RM Altitude Powerplay on here. It's a great bike. I demo'd the Instinct Powerplay and did a review of it on my channel. It's a fantastic bike and the "natural" pedal feel is bar-none, one of the smoothest pedal-assists out there! Have you ridden any of these? If so, do you have a favorite? Cheers!
I dont quite get where the number one spot for the Marin comes from. Compared to the number 3 spot Propain literally every spec aside from the battery is worse for only 200 dollars less. The Propain is the only bike to offer a full GX drivetrain, also it has one of the best suspension setups on this list - not to mention the tiny sram Guide brakes some of these come with. Honestly the only other bikes that impressed me value wise are the Commencal and the Polygon. Still I really liked the video and loved that you also put neat little bits of information about e-bikes in general between the bikes.
I just watched the video a little closer again and saw that for 5800 dollars, at least with the special offer price you showed in this vid (same as the lowest spec Specialized Turbo Levo), you get the Propain with full X01 drivetrain, Full RS Super Deluxe Ultimate suspension and Magra brakes.... that is value right there!
Add the E-CELLS Super Monarch Crown for hunting and off-road exploring. 2 wheel drive, 2 batteries, dual suspension and all for just under $5,000. Check out the RUclips reviews.
Hey, great list! I think I just found my new next bike. But I've got a dilemma right now. I have a chance to get Marin Alpine Trail E2 2022 at slightly lower price than Canyon Spectral ON CF 8 with battery 900 and carbon fiber frame. I've been wondering if CF frames are good choice for such trail/ enduro bikes? Can you comment and recommend better choice? Thanks 👍
Looking at ebikes for days at the shop . One thing i seen the most was expensive ebikes with unsealed cheap components. The shogun ebx5 was the best value at around $3000 and to get the same features on other brands they charge over $4000 . Take a good look at your hubs ppl
If I just patch the tennis ball size hole in my trailer with some foundation blocks, and a blue tarp. Also, stop eatting so much Ramen, and eat bugs instead, I can save up and get one in ten years! caint harly wait!
E-bikes should not be categorized the same as "normal' bikes. The extra travel on an E-bike is a huge plus. 170mm should be considered a trail bike imho.

Thank you for the insight sir!🫡
Bought a 2022 Yamaha YZ250 F for $8500, probably more distance and enjoyment, but still wanted e-bike as semi push bike🙂
Mountain bike trails are "better" than the places you can ride dirt bike. More tech, more involving,.
check out yamaha ydx moro line of ebikes
Thanks very much; I’ve been thinking for 2 years now and recognize a few models in my budget, so good to know they still remain in the mix plus new ones I never thought or heard of 👍🏼🏆
Cheers!🍻
I don’t even want an e bike but you are so engaging that I don’t care
Happy to hear you’re still getting out on the bike!!🤘🏻
TRP Brakes all day every day, they don't sing in the wet plus pads will last atleast 8 months
I own the Radon Render 10.0 2021 and love it! Some of the best bang for your buck and bikepark capable... ;)
@@philssonson Because of you, I am picking up my used Specialized Turbo Levo today! Thank you!
Well said Mark!
Buy the e-caliber
At 65, with bad knees, thanks football, and a recommendation from a cardiologist not to get my heart over 115, it makes all the sense
Well done video getting to specifications without a lot of chatter .
YT has developed a 720 battery for the decoy this will likely be my next Ebike.
Love the decoy… can’t wait to ride one🤘🏻
Love my YT Decoy Elite and any day release on the 720 battery. No regrets, Close to 3k miles and slamming.
Does this 720 battery also gonna fit in the 2022 Models? Cause place is there so IT would bei cool and possible
Occasionally, I need to pull a trailer a long distance, sometimes a heavy load up-hill, E-bikes make it possible and allow me to tailor my workout.
Yamaha YDX MORO, just bought one and it’s a hell of a bike for the money. Love all the plus tips you gave to riding one of these bikes.
Great video!
Thx!🤜🏼🤛🏼
@@TopToBottomMTB I'm actually thinking of buying eMTB for a gravel riding. The full suspension looks comfy, and the motor will more than compensate for the added weight I think.
It's great to see the US catching up with Europe, where over 50% of the mtbs on the trails are emtbs
Still at very high prices. My 1st ebike was at 4000+,2nd 5000,3rd7000,it will be out of reach for even some retiree. Weight has not come down as much as price hike.
You can buy a decent motorcycle for what some folks pay for these e-bikes.
I’m glad you like the friendly comments and I also like sending them, you’re an amazing RUclipsr and definitely my favorite❤

For my number 1 spot I would have put the Haibike Nduro 7 2022. Mega spec for an unbeatable price
6400 is hardly an unbeatable price..
@@cooleyballs1 here in the uk it’s £5399 similar spec bikes are in the price range of £7000+.
I am disabled on a fixed income. This summer I had to quit climbing. Ebike- pricing is out of reach. Going back to the road. 😢since when did 6000 bucks get affordable.
I agree it is a hell of a lot of money
I'm 51 and will most likely start looking at e-bikes when I hit 60. For now though, I'm going to keep ridding my meat powered bike as long as I can. I just love the way it feels on the trail. When I've ridden e-bikes I love how easy it is to make it to the top of the trail. On the other hand, I hate how they feel going down the trail. With that said, another great video brother. Oh, what e-bike are you looking to get?
Thinking for beefing up a Trek Fuel EX-e with a 150mm coil and a 160mm Fox 38.
No matter how old I get I will never get e bike.. I'm 54 and riding strong
@@MajorBorris I used to think that as well. At your age I had just done the Dempster to Inuvik NT. Now that I consider my 50's my carefree youth I am thinking I will be getting an E Bike. Thinking it would be a good birthday present for my 70th birthday.
Really excellent thorough video
Cheers!👊🏻
Just ordered a Niner RIP e9 from Jenson based on your recommendation. Can’t wait for delivery. Seemed like too good of a price to pass up for the package. Broke my leg on my dirt bike recently and will be using the ebike to rehab the leg. Will be my first ebike. Should be fun!
Sick! Thanks for the support! You’re gonna have a blast! That’s a sweet deal for what you get! 🤘🏻
Sick let me know how it is when you get it!!🤘🏻
Thanks bud enjoy your videos.
Ebike Positive - don't pay for lifts just ride uphill free :)
Also you can still work yourself hard on trails w Ebike just as much - you just get more miles doing it in same time.
Thx man! Good to to hear you’re still getting out there!🤜🏼🤛🏼
Great vid. Talk about the last 4 cheerz
Thanks! Cheers!🤜🏼🤛🏼
Added a plus to an e bike… You can get more fit. Studies show he bikes allow you to keep your heart rate in a better place to get more fit quicker.
I have disability and I had to sell my motorcycle, & I bought an EMTB, but bought a cheap $4500 LUNA X2 Ludicrous. Suspension stinks, just so many corners cut by LUNA for the price point.
1. Giant Reign E
2. YT Decoy Core 2
I'm trying to beat cancer and still ride. It kills me on the analog but I can still get 1.5-2hrs in on my Yamaha YDX-moro.
Yeah this be what I need a ebike best value
The Orbea H 30 on sale now for under $4500 is hard to beat. This bike was a great value at $5600.
It’s is!!
i tried an H15 and instantly bought it
Ditto!
Where is it on sale? I'm only seeing retail price $5699

I like the idea of a Emtb...but for those prices i rather get an Honda CRF 300, a Royal Enfield Himalayan... But i would feel comfortable expending like 2k for a dual suspension emtb, till that day i will keep pedaling and/or riding a proper dirt motorbike.
I really like this type of video. I'd like to see some UK steel - ti hardtrails

I ride Marin Alpin Train E2 and it’s very capable for climbing or downhill
Love it! Before I signed on with Polygon, that’s the bike I was eyeing out!
The haibikes are great value in europe/uk. Great spec for the money.
I fall into the lazy rider camp
@@TopToBottomMTB The 2023 orbea wild h30 is 5699 and is big motor another bike worth considering, imo.
Cheers!
Ridden the rail, Commencal and Levo… I like the Shimano EP8 system on the meta the best…
On paper the Frey AM1000 V6 is the best value I have seen, I really wish a toober would review it or the Frey Beast.

Love the videos

Faina treaba !
What about the Merida? Or is it not for sale over there?
Thanks for the video and review. What are your thoughts on Luna X2 E bike?
¡Gracias!
De nada Senor!🤜🏼🤛🏼

Thanks 👍
the most important reason: e-bikes are funnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!
That’s it! More riding = more fun!!!
I would include new ebike..why did you not take a test a CUBE ebike..then make a RUclips video
What about the CANYON Torque On that would have been my number 1 . Giant would have been my 1st choice
The torque was in the bonus bikes.
Just turned 68 and climbing is getting harder. Getting an e-bike this year and going to ride it on my favorite trails where e-bikes are not allowed!
I just smoked all these deals. Got a kenevo expert for 5700
Nice work! Specialized is getting really aggressive with clearing out their over-stock... Good for you! Now go rip it up!
Shogun ebx5 . Complete crank driven sealed hubs n bottom bracket 👌. Under 3000. Your welcome
Looking at ebikes for days at the shop . One thing i seen the most was expensive ebikes with unsealed cheap components.
The shogun ebx5 was the best value at around $3000 and to get the same features on other brands they charge over $4000 . Take a good look at your hubs ppl
what is your opinion between ktm macina kapoho 7973 and Mondraker Chaser 29 ??
Which one weighs the least?
Your Missing The Yamaha YDX Moro, Pro, 05, and 07
man its so hard to justify these when you look at talaria/surron style bikes
Throttle bikes are not allowed on 95% of trails out there where as these class 1 e-bikes are.
with an e bike you can ride more and build your riding skills.
What about a Radon Deft 9.0. just picked one up for 4K
Can you share why the orbea wild was not considered? Thx
Thoughts on the Giant Stance E+?
