I prefer to leave my snare un-gated. My drummers tend to do a lot of ghost notes and you can easily lose a lot of those hits if you're using a gate. I start with my snare top and bottom mics, get the sound I want, then use gated kick and toms to fill out the sound and send information to the subwoofers. With a little overheads to make up for the fact on a little bit of cymbals are being heard by the snare mics.
Sounded like there was a lot of extra stuff coming through your snare channels, so I think in that context you made the right call.

Thanks for pointing this out, Jeremy. Gating can really be a nuisance on a snare mic when there are lots of ghost notes and subtle rolls.

      Don't you smooth it out?

Does vocals needs to be gate? Or does gate help minimize feedback from monitor speakers on stage?

Hi Boss, Can you do a tutorial on Wing. I will enroll your course if you can prepare all your videos on wing.

I find that the Wave Designer does a better job, as it works on the wave shape not the level. You have finer control.

shalom, help us please.. why is the sound in my church so loud and unclear? what the solution about this..

Sounds like your mix is muddy and needs eq and compression. Try to eq the room by seeing what frequencies are unpleasant. As for compression, there is a video on this channel about that.

Might be cleaner but it really killed the fullness and snap on the snare.

There's always a trade off. And it comes down to what you are wanting to hear. If ungated is the sound you are going for, leave it ungated.
