These Frontline interviews about Putin are the most fascinating, insightful things I have watched on RUclips in a long time. Why haven't our politicians watched it? 🇺🇸
Well said, great series with real insight, well produced, Unfortunately they show how advisers and presidents have been very poor, when dealing with Russia, after 60 years of Cold War, 20 years of Putin has been no better perhaps worse, and now, a reset button isn’t going to cut it.
I am mesmerized by this series of interviews!! I move from one to the next nonstop 😱!! So insightful, all very well educated and knowledgeable. Really amazing and valuable information, especially with the current events. Makes you wonder if there was something that could have been done 4 years ago to avoid what seemed inevitable under those circumstances even back then
Are you serious? Do you ever read books for more inderpendent and analysis or do you just educate yourself with the media and TV? Putin has been trying to avoid a war for years and Ukraine has been laughing in his face, ignoring his attempts for negotiations and breaking peace deals made years ago. The Ukraine government and police force are full of "actual Nazis" I don't blame Putin for ultimately declaring war on Ukraine. Ukraine is also corrupt to the core with a defiant reackless leader pushing Putin and Ukrainian people into a war.

These interviews are rivetting. I am bingeing them all in an effort to understand what is going on in 2022. Still can't understand how Putin thought he could saunter into Ukraine in a couple of days. Serious miscalculation. Slava Ukraine🙏
He had no plans to conquer Ukraine IMO. Idea was to get troops into Ukraine and they drive around engaging in small conflicts crushing Ukrainian Defence Forces, get them to negotiate with an end goal of a pro Russian government there.
He thought Zelensky would flee once he crossed the border en masse and the army would then just give up and he could put his puppet in place, thats my assessment, obviously he miscalculated.

These funds are working here on the commercial basis and put money in Ukrainian businesses in order to develop, fix them (this includes full transparency, which means no black market schemes or money laundering) and potentially sell them. We have invested over 5 bn dollars to assist Ukraine in these goals that will ensure a secure and prosperous democratic Ukraine”
Correct!, this is the real story of the Russia state today, after the cold war. Yeltsin was trying to protect his own greed by manevouring Putin into place, without letting the Russian people decide.
In all fairness, the collapse of the Eastern block in 1989, and later of the Soviet Union, fueled that optimism. We should have had a more measured approach to Russia. Also we forgot that more than merely providing aid, we should have appreciated a nation's sense of honor and self respect. That said, Putin has attacked the West, to the detriment of his own country.
Senator Romney was right ! Years ago, as Putin was consolidating his absolute power, Sen. Romney said Russia was the single most dangerous threat to the democratic world. He has been vindicated.

Are there any interviews that allude to a John Mearsheimer position which predicted the Ukraine crisis long ago, if the U.S continued to pursue Ukraine to become part of NATO?
Well he does make one glaring mistake, invoking the 'fake news' concept to imply that Bush had nothing to do with 'firing that reporter". The fake news turned out to be the GOP swift-boating of Rather's source materials. W was not personally of course able to fire Rather but 'his people' as Mr. Baker refers to the Putin power, absolutely pulled it off.
@@pandamandimax Rather's document was never proven to be a fake. The GOP promoted a claim about the typewriting but that was debunked later. Rather's 'crime' was not to get a second source, which among responsible journalists is the requirement for professional credibility. He was convinced by the apparent authenticity of the official letter, but that was what got questioned. Baker seems to think he got the story wrong. Nope.
Thanks I remember when that all went down but the details were scarce. Wasn't the story that he found proof George w Bush went awol? But he actually did go awol, it's a known fact?
Yep. Nobody ever went back to the issue of the substance of the charge because Rather's embarrassment by the network chiefs was more newsworthy. I guess.
Notice now recently that Putin was only assembling an "occupation force" near Kharkiv instead of an "invasion force." He had total faith that Trump would not allow more military aid to Ukraine... for some reason. Putin did not anticipate that Mike Johnson would finally cave in to pressure from sane people and rebel against Trump. So then Putin was forced to rush into "plan B" with inadequate forces, and now all the military experts are scratching their heads trying to figure out why Putin invaded with WAY too small of a force. Putin has some unknown hold on Trump, a 100% hold.
I've come realize that this is the only way to keep up on all of what went on. All the contributors to the 'Putin Files' have kept the setup and moving pieces in mind. Trying to read timelines and outlines doesn't stick as much for me. Thank you 'Frontline', as soon as I can PBS will be getting a check. MM

Watched the whole thing. Mr. Baker is so objective in his storytelling anyone even remotely familiar with events he portrays turns into Putin apologist. Blaming Putin for being hard headed relic of KGB training/brainwashing only works if you don't come off as a cold war mentality victim yourself. Wrong about the context: reason Putin regarded collapse of the Soviet Union as a bad thing was because it meant 25 million Russians now lived in a foreign country, not because he wanted the S.U. or an empire back.
Who is the person doing the interviewing? I've watched several of these videos, and it comes out every so often that the interviewer has a point of view and views some answers as correct.
If you watch the other episodes, you will see what other people -- who were in a position know -- said about things. You will see why the interviewer asks questions that cross-check other people's statements, and doesn't mind that this answer checks out.

The number one takeaway I have from watching all of these background interviews is that every one of these national treasures has forgotten more about Putin and Russia than I have ever learned, and I have passionately studied political science and international relations for my entire adult life. The only analogy that comes to mind for how I feel watching these interviews is the gratitude I feel for filmmakers like those who put together March of the Penguins, or many National Geographic specials. 58:14 he lies. Moscow was not opposed to the signing of Ukraine's association with the EU. In 2013, Ukraine had close economic relations with Russia and duty-free zero tax rates on the export of goods to Russia. When signing the association of Ukraine with the EU, European goods could enter Russia duty-free, this would cause damage to Russian producers, this was a violation of WTO rules that Russia had previously signed. Therefore, Moscow invited Brussels to discuss this at a trilateral meeting between Kyiv, Moscow, and Brussels, but Brussels categorically refused to discuss it, after which Yanukovych asked to postpone the signing of the association in order to resolve the issue of taxation. One of the clauses of the agreement with Europe included a clause on military cooperation, which was essentially drawing Ukraine into NATO, this violated the non-bloc neutral status of Ukraine, which was spelled out in Article 6 of the "Great Treaty" of 1997 between Ukraine and Russia. This became the trigger for the color revolution according to the scenario of the State Department in the winter of 2014 in Kyiv. The CIA brought ultra-right radicals from the forest who shot people from both sides of the confrontation and carried out a coup d'etat the next day after the signing of an agreement between the opposition and Yanukovych. Obama retaliated against Putin in Kyiv in 2014 for the failure of the August 2013 red line in Syria and for Putin's New York Times op-ed. Putin criticized Obama for talking about American exceptionalism. Obama wanted to use this propaganda stunt to attack Syria without a UN Security Council resolution. The Ukrainian Maidan is just another page from Wolfowitz's 1992 doctrine of absolute US hegemony in a unipolar world and preventing the emergence of a new rival in Russia or anywhere else in the world.

More interviews like this could bring us together in the name of our unperfect , but always improving democracies. Other systems may seem perfect, until u look under their carpets. Let's learn from this authentic well documented way of feedback giving, and understand it all better, to make our democracies much stronger and stand together in its defense. Not neutral. He focused too much on what Trump was saying with regard to Russia and the hacking and not enough on what Trump actually did with respect to the sanctions against Russia once he got in office.
1. Affiliation with KGB or being a KGB staff was nothing close to being a Harvard graduate. Being a "Kagebeshchnik" was considered shameful. They were feared but not respected. 2. Eltsin had almost nothing to do with the break-up of the Soviet Union.
Like him or hate him… Putin wasn’t born into a rich or powerful family. He is a self-made man ruling one of the most influential countries in the world. Never underestimate your adversary
It's disingenuous to suggest that the US has never engaged in any subversive activity in Russia or the rest of the world. The US has done enough political and economic interference to trump (no pun intended) every other global power. It's also naive to believe that Putin is acting out only out of resentment and bitterness.

juuso m The pathetic pathologizing by these propagandistic hacks is quite something. Any leader of Russia, liberal, conservative, socialist, nationalist would have had to eventually use agression to stop expansionism of the U.S.
TheSpiritOfTheTimes Oh yeah? How come can ”strong” and ”confident” leader exile, ban, jail, murder all of the main critics and rivals. And doesnt dare to face any REAL debates in the media. To me that is FUNDAMENTAL insecurity!
TheSpiritOfTheTimes And also aggressive foreign policy is the main core of domestic propaganda, why he is there? Show that he is the last white knight to protect mother russia. He has no other way to explain why he stays.
juuso m - you are obviously unfamiliar with what happens in Russia. Have you ever been there? Putin sits in public for about four hours twice a year answering any question thrown at him by the world’s press or Russian citizens. To my knowledge there is no other President that does that and certainly no American President. So please don’t make accusations about subjects on which you are ignorant.
juuso m - maybe you don’t know “ why he is there”. Russians know why, that’s how he gets more than 80% support while no recent American President could ever claim to equal it due to divisions in their own society. Putin must be doing something right, don’t you think?

Yeltsin screwed Gorbachev and then got his comeuppance. Gorbachev was the father of Russian freedom. Yeltsin's greed led to the country's downfall.
Correct!, this is the real story of the Russia state today, after the cold war. Yeltsin was trying to protect his own greed by manevouring Putin into place, without letting the Russian people decide.
American optimism is one of its greatest failures in assessing the contemporary future of Russia after 1989
In all fairness, the collapse of the Eastern block in 1989, and later of the Soviet Union, fueled that optimism.

Are there any interviews that allude to a John Mearsheimer position which predicted the Ukraine crisis long ago, if the U.S continued to pursue Ukraine to become part of NATO?
Peter Baker rocks. I had no idea that he was a Russia expert. I thought he was just a White House correspondent.
William can you explain more what you're talking about?
@@pandamandimax Rather's document was never proven to be a fake. The GOP promoted a claim about the typewriting but that was debunked later. Rather's 'crime' was not to get a second source, which among responsible journalists is the requirement for professional credibility.
I guess.

So then Putin was forced to rush into "plan B" with inadequate forces, and now all the military experts are scratching their heads trying to figure out why Putin invaded with WAY too small of a force. But, wow Frontline, I was unequivocally dejected after watching this interview. To me it was glaringly obvious, Frontline was approbative to one opinion throughout the entire interview. But what alarmed me most, was as I continued to watch, I had an increasing sense of it being purposeful. So I have to ask, in hindsight, do you feel this interview was a work of ethical journalism? Obviously, I'm sure you know my answer but I'll stated anyway. I do not feel it was a work of ethical journalism. It is wholeheartedly my belief that if this interview was truely a work of ethical journalism, then the host would have, at bare minimum, had a few utterances demurring the answers and opinions put forth by Peter Baker. Again, I apologize if my candidness offends anyone. That is truly far from my intention. My intention is to bring awareness to the societal issues caused by not engaging in true and ethical journalism. Our country is at a precipice. If we continue to only engage with those who hold the similar opinions and never utilize critical thinking in an effort to expand discourse, then America is sure to fall. As I'm sure you are all aware, there are groups of individuals and or countries who want nothing more than to see us Americans' divided. So please, hear what I'm saying and please don't just push it to the side. If anything read it twice because what I'm saying is without a doubt of the ut most importance. We all have to grasp what is truly at stake here because we all know our enemies are on the side lines watching us divided. They're like ravage dogs waiting for their moment to pounce because it divided America is a conquerable America. It's time to stop and think about what we are all doing because what is the old adage? And, what is the most effective strategy used in any war? Divide and conquer? Like I said before the moment is now. Every single one of us Americans is at a precipice. Lastly, I again want to apologize for offending or emotionally hurting anyone. It truly was not my intentions because everything I've said here arose from a place of love for my country and my fellow country men, women, trans, bi, gay, and alien, haha. Because at the end of it all, no matter what views you hold and no matter how different those views are from my own, we all experience the tribulations of being mortal. I love you America.
Please remember Seth Rich and Frontline, I wrote this piece because I feel you owe it to Seth Rich to express the opinion he cannot. I feel that when anyone discusses or talks about the DNC leak and attributing the leak to Russia, should also bring up Seth Rich as well. I understand that you may not agree with what he did or agree that he was even involved but he is still a human being and he deserves his opinion and story to be known! For those of you who don't know about Seth Rich or how he may have been involved in the DNC hack and the Hillary Clinton emails please do your due diligence. Utilize those critical thinking skills and research his name, Seth Rich.
This guy is good. Reasonable, head on his shoulders, sound.
His response to that school event should have rung the alarm for the west. Look at what that devil is doing to children and the vulnerable in Ukraine. Pathetic.

America is the best at interferring with foreign elections, regime changes, Coups, all OVER the WORLD, suddenly so freak out about Russians? Don't worry bro, you are still the best.
Without the intelligence, dedication and heroic efforts of these subject-matter experts, the rest of us mere mortals would barely have more knowledge than that which fits on a bumper sticker, or in a 5 minute segment on what laughably passes for investigative journalism these days. Thank you, Frontline and PBS. Without you, our Republic would truly be in peril. (Well, in even greater peril.)
25:00: Baker tries to separate the Islamic fundamentalist problem Russia was having in Chechnia from that of the US based on the fact that Chechnia was opposed to Russian occupation. But Osama bin Laden was well known to despise the American presence in Arab countries. So the US and Russia did, in fact, face very similar situations.
The difference is that the US armed and financed the Chechans. Where as the Russians never financed Bin Laden, the Saudis (US allies) did.
Do you have any proof that the US provided any material supports for the Chechnyns?
@@bloggart2421 mate I don't have the evidence on me, but the links between the Wahhabi Chechen rebels and the Saudis are well established. And I think you'd agree that these Wahhabi terror outfits were & actually still are used by US all over the world e.g Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Russians have always maintained that. And for confirmation just look at where these Wahhabi Chechen leaders moved to after the war? NATO countries ! One of them was murdered/assassinated in Germany

This interview is just reminder of how Americans are obsessed with their ideas of them being bigger than big ,the tone used in the interview is telling .
Yes , is good to hear these people speak. What they say is true and interesting .But they underestimate the danger of America's perceived imperialism to the world. They see its benign aspect only but don't engage in aspects that others see. Trump is right that relations with Russia relationship needed to be reset. The relationship as it IS has become destructive for the World.

How can those people who are not even Russians nor have shared a single discussion with any Putin’s childhood friend or acquaintance describe a person they have never met. Good job talking to one news of Frontline..
Great job with the English captioning!
Indeed. The interviewer misspoke Victoria Nuland’s name as “Nufeld” in his question but the caption spelled it correctly. The really nice thing is that Mr. Baker did not immediately correct him. He replied to the question and later very subtly said Ms Nufeld’s name correctly.
The Ukrainian Maidan is just another page from Wolfowitz's 1992 doctrine of absolute US hegemony in a unipolar world and preventing the emergence of a new rival in Russia or anywhere else in the world.
the collapse of the soviet union did not mean liberation it meant millions of people in a state that crumbled, a nation divided with no government in place. hence anarchy

I think it's clear enough to believe more than ever in democracy and not let the chaotic view and flaws of this democratic ways, get in the way of strengthening it and making it even better and more effective.
More interviews like this could bring us together in the name of our unperfect , but always improving democracies.
Other systems may seem perfect, until u look under their carpets.
Let's learn from this authentic well documented way of feedback giving, and understand it all better, to make our democracies much stronger and stand together in its defense.
And,who knows, maybe when others finally see the strength and health of it, others are also convinced to follow this path to become more healthy and prosper society.

Sounds like Putin had the same type of Father that Trump experienced growing up and the results of this abuse effected both men in very similar ways.

Yep, this gives you the idea putin is fundamentally quite insecure.
juuso m The pathetic pathologizing by these propagandistic hacks is quite something.
