Thanks for everything. It is very easy with your explanations. In your hands, Spectralayers, you make it super easy. Thanks for your great tutorial and your work!!
I have a lot of old material, and I love going out and doing random foley sounds. Spectralayers is quite daunting and I have found it difficult, but you have made it a lot easier and interesting for me. Thanks a lot!
Great video, thank you for sharing. I have just upgraded to Cubase 11 Pro, and I am only scratching the surface with the potential of Spectral Layers and uses.
The first section, that seems a lot of work for me but I may need to attempt work like it at some point. The second section, wow! Very impressive. I will definitely be putting that to the test soon. Good work and demo. Thanks.
You are correct that it was a lot of work at the time I made this video, at which point Spectral Layers was at version 6. The recent release of version 7 has introduced dramatic improvements and additions that make that part of my video obsolete. The addition of artificial intelligence in version 7 has given Spectral Layers the ability to recognize specific instruments, particularly drums, piano, vocals and bass. What was once a lot of work in this demo can now be accomplished in just a couple of clicks. That it can extract vocals (including harmonies), drums and other instruments so cleanly and easily now is actually rather astonishing and was not expected at the time I made this video. Good luck with your projects!
I’ve now had a chance to work with the new Version 7 and wow 😲 , this is a major advancement, thanks in large part to the new artificial intelligence engine. In addition to a wealth of new features, the big one is automatic detection of each instrument and extraction to new layers. This is now done with a single command and takes just seconds. For purposes similar to the song demonstration in this video, making selections is completely unnecessary and makes significant parts of the video happily obsolete! Of course it is not perfect, especially with dense or complex material. But it works far better than I ever thought possible and makes total remixing possible far beyond what was possible when I made this video! In one day, I managed to remix a very old demo with dramatically improved result, which couldn’t have been done at all at the time I made this video!
This video was made when version 6 was released. Since then, Steinberg has released version 7, a major upgrade to Spectral Layers. Version 7.0 adds a miraculous Artificial Intelligence engine featuring automatic unmixing by recognizing specific common instruments (and critically, vocals! ). There are also new features designed to eliminate much of the tedium of making selections. As such, certain aspects of this demonstration are now partially obsolete.
It's incredible! I have tried many programs like Izotope RX and Xtrax Stems but Spectra Layers 7 beats them all. While the separation is still far from perfect, it's a hundred times more convincing and accurate than any other program I tested! The bleed is really really minimal. There are artifacts unfortunately but a lot less than in the other programs. The artifacts can be dealt with using the manual tools of course.
@@themanaiacalgamer8451 I agree with your assessment. With fairly complex material, artifacts are a given. But like you, I'm surprised it is as good as it is with that. Version 7 was such a major upgrade, I think that future versions will be even more accurate. I'm also going to guess that in the future, more instruments will be included for recognition (guitar??).
Yes. They have certainly made very significant upgrades to this application since I made this video. Extracting drums used to be a time consuming job as it was in my video. Now it is done in a single click!
Yes, I have just got Cubase 11 and have used the unmix vocals in the basic Spectralayers version that they give you. Amazing. So today, they have a Black Friday promotion to get Spectralayers 7 pro for half price. Just bought it and can now unmix vocals, drums, even noise. Looks pretty good, if only I can spend loads of time with it beyond just unmixing!
The Cubase version is an add-on feature and is limited in features. The tutorial video features the stand -alone full pro version (6) of Spectral Layers and is priced accordingly.
not to be picky but the removal of noises for the bird clips makes the orignal bird sound like a weird digital artifact. All of the natural sound is gone
That's how the bird actually sounds, which is why I wanted to sample it in the first place. On my studio monitors, removing the background noise did not affect the bird sound in any way. See, unlike RUclips viewers, I heard the bird in its natural environment before the recording was made, so I'm quite clear on the "natural" sound.
After all these years... You should know what your mistakes were by now.. I listened 2 minutes to it and I allready can tell you it's ain't the drums but the bass guitar that is too loud... I thought someone should tell you.
Thank you for your input and opinion. There were certain unforeseen circumstances 40 years ago that you are completely unaware of that were the cause of the drums being way too loud and uncorrectable at the time. It had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with musical mistakes or decisions on my part. Without going into any detail, it was entirely due to fate that I had no control of. Also, I'd like to make you aware that I've been a professional musician, producer and engineer (including mixing and mastering) for decades, and that I've not once have I ever had a client dissatisfied with my mixing or mastering. I've extensively listened to this particular song over a long period of time on many speaker systems and I'm quite pleased with the way it now sounds in it's current mix, as is everyone else that has heard it including the original band members involved in the original recording. The virtually remixed and remastered album containing this song is currently selling quite well thanks to major interest overseas. Spectral Layers was one significant factor towards making that possible!
@@Demonstrations_SP holy crap everybody always has something negative to say anymore. I will soon be putting out an album that says exactly what I wish everybody in the world would hear and take to heart. The truth is the more negative towards other a person is the more i pity their broken spirit for the way one speaks to and of those around them is a true reflection on how that person feels inside about themselves - with all the hate that is so freely distributed i can only surmise that we have two entire generations of people that are simply unable to deal with the challenges in todays world - thus I pity them for they have been brought into a world that is getting ready to explode in unprecedented levels of murder and human hatred, brought on deliberately using social media and traditional media as a weapon to turn brother against brother ( and we are all brother and sisters, so for each harm done to others that harm is delivered unto all, maybe that is why people are so hurt and angry today). Bass should stand out because it's bass, the soundwave is slower to be heard, but should rise above the mix, thus why when playing with a band you tone your guitar to do what during the solo? Cut through lol. Personally I would have used something to make the bass a little fuller but then I am listening on a laptop which doesn't do any justice to the low end - anyway long story short, there is no need to correct or defend my man, those of us still capable of such things as appreciation are glad you placed this video up. I have some old tunes I would like to revive that all the stems are lost. The drums are just so mechanical they rob it all of the dynamics that the rest of the instrumentation has so much of. I was thinking I would have to relearn the songs and rerecord, but looks like this tool will allow me to remove the tired old drum machine beats, clean all the audio frequencies up to create some much needed space and even make the changes to parts that seemed like a good idea at the time but now annoy me. This video was what made me aware of those possibilities I will subscribe because nobody on here has to male these videos that i for one rely on to help me learn, thus some appreciation is the correct response - you would think parents would have taught their children to say thank you rather than fuck you but there you have it. So thank you
