I own the Nikki Sixx Gibson Blackbird and I adore it! I love that the minimalism of the instrument just on or off. All the tone/volume comes at the amp. The Maltese cross inlays are cool and it plays great! Good to see you touch on it in this video. I have no idea how many of them were made.
I bought one of those back in late 02/early 03. It was a beast, played and sounded great. The weight and neck dive kind of sucked, but it was worth it. I wish I had kept it.
i love watching guitar players play bass it just shows how different the instruments are.
I'm surprised the master volume/tone knobs aren't individual master volumes for each pickup given that there is no position switch, but it sounds great! Great review and demo, Trogly!
Yeah, that surprised me, too! Shouldn't be too hard to modify it accordingly, though 🙂
I'd simply replace kill switch with 3 way toggle.
Or Swap kill with 3 way
And add another Vol pot
I am no expert, but there is a reason Gibson was in receivership-over priced and poorly designed instruments.
@@cahg3871 Yes - and that reason had nothing to do with guitars and basses. "Gibson"-branded instruments was pretty much the only financially healthy business in Henry Juszkiewicz' house of cards, despite all the moronic design decisions, ridiculous labour conditons, and constant QC issues.
Taking out loans to avoid defaulting on other loans is not a sustainable business model. Same with buying brand after brand - only to do absolutely nothing constructive with most of them. Then again, allegedly, all those brands were only acquired as fronts to get overfinanced loans to keep prior loans from collapsing.
Funny how Mr. Harvard Business School's personal Wikipedia page has magically disappeared and redirects to the page for Gibson now, innit?
with that finish they should've called it the Bloodbird
If you buy a Nikki Sixx bass you're required to snort substances off it before playing
Holstorr, we meet again
Hence the mirrored pickguard...
That's on the patreon
Y'know with a deep-colored flame finish like that, I think the satin almost looks better than a gloss. You can see more movement without the glare.
Hey, Trogly, I have a pre- 2010 Epiphone Blackbird like the second one you covered with nothing but an on/off toggle for controls. Looks just like the on you showed, all satin or matte black with the cross fret markers, except mine is a set neck and the pickups have "Six Pack" on them. Though you would find this interesting.
A really quick and very light pass with a damp Mr Clean magic eraser takes all of the gloss out of the finish and restores the satin really close to factory finish. I have an absolute beater of a 2000 SG Gothic that was nearly completely gloss everywhere except under the pick guard, but now is back to a really nice satin with the transition at the pickguard nearly unnoticeable.
Great job! I hope you'll review more basses!

Nice! The Butthole Surfers! Totally dig it, really nice look, especially the flamed maple wings! Thanks, Austin, for stepping out of your normal range & featuring a pretty kick ass bass!
That demo shop drop was ridiculous today 😆
Greetings Nathaniel
Good evening Brother
@@hkguitar1984 Greetings HK!
@@sgt.grinch3299 good evening!
ikr. how long were they holding onto those?
Id love a MickMars Strat limited Run . THATd be siiiick
Fender offered but Mick turned them down.
I'm an old school bassist and not a fan of gimmick bands like Motley Crue. I do love Firebird basses but I wouldn't pay more for a signature Firebird bass just because it says Nikki Sixx on it. Thanks for the bass content, always appreciated.
did not expect to see this bass on the channel but it's a great surprise !! 🤘
I’ve just started getting into bass after playing guitar for 35 years. Cool looking bass, it’s a pity there’s so many QC issues
I'd have to rewire it and replace that on/off with a 3 way pickup selecter. And the opti-grab is very similar to the electric conduit strap Chuck Berry screws into his guitar so he can hold it while playing behind is head.
Chuck Berry doesn't screw anything anymore. He's been dead for half a decade.
@@henrygvidonas9573 dats right, my bad
Thank you for not doing a new Fender Metora like everyone else is doing today 😂… the Metora bass looks interesting, but it’s full scale and has a Jazz bass nut width… out of my comfort zone as a long time guitar player that’s learning bass.)
Love to see bass reviews! Keep up that slapping trogly!
I had one of those original Blackbirds when they came out. Long gone of course, but it was pretty badass looking.
As someone who has played a T-bird bass for 20+ years, I appreciate this review and documentation. Also you should look into seeing if you like something like a Helix if you plan on doing more bass stuff and don't want to get an actual bass amp.
There's also my solution. I bought a DigiTech BP355 digital bass processor. Tons of sounds and processing power, an expression pedal and cheap as dirt because they're old. They can make a bass sound GREAT!
I liked the tone Nikki's bass gave out, even though I would probably put in a stacked pot so as to have 2 volume controls without spoiling the look. That basic tone could be retrieved just by running both volumes full out. Mixing would be just like the Fender Jazz Bass. But that's just what I'D do!
Not a Motley Crue fan, but I would love to give this bass a try.
I'm not a Crue fan or a bass player and I want one. Lol
I read the heroin diaries that was all I really know about Motley Crue but I think it’s kool how Nikki six is a guitarist and a bassist who writes songs kind of like me and he is from texas like me
Not a Mötley Crüe fan but I would love to girls girls girls
Also bass just sounds so badass to me , I've always preferred the sounds that come out of a nice bass over a guitar
not a fan of Motley Crue, but I'd be lying to myself if I said that wasn't a damn fine instrument. Looks that kill indeed!
Shiiiit man I was listening to "Theater of Pain" in my fiances car today! Funny how that works out... Yknow, I've been a Mötley Crüe fan damn near my whole life, got me into hairmetal, and Mick is the reason I learned to shred 😅
Greetings and well wishes from Utah!
Superb tone and a great looking Thunderbird, looks like a personal thing not having individual volumes, I'd rather have the versatility, but, a good spruce up on those QC areas and great to go ' excellent review'
I went to 2nd and Main today and they had a nice looking Epiphone Thunderbird. You think a lot of people have different views on what mint means but I've heard to many calling new guitars vintage. Granted the may have looked at something that had the same style Qs as a true vintage. Possibly a reissue or something. Your supposed to be able to play a bass through a spark amp and a Fender Mustang IV. I have both and a bass bit haven't tried it though.
I thought that Opti-Grab®️ thingie's purpose was to keep the bass from moving a lot by hooking one's pinky onto it during wild stage shows, rather than fighting neck-dive!? And I remember him playing Hamer™️ T-birds with zebra-stripe and polka-dot pattern finishes in the 80's 😀
you cornered the market on guitar info✨⚜️✨
Beautiful bass. Always loved the Hamer he played in the early days. Why not give Twiggy Rameriz a signature white Thunderbird? Be kinda cool. Be strong and Shout At The Devil!!!
Twiggy/Jeordie White so deserves a signature bass. I also loved when he was in NIN.
Really cool brother. Keep the videos coming 🤟🏼
Beautiful AXE...OMG..LOVE THE DISTORTION DUDE...!
Miss my GIBSON EXPLORER BASS had it stolen back in 1988. Man that sucked. Got an ARIA EXPLORER BLUE BURST soon after but not the same, still got it, BUT THIS SIXX..
🤟🤩🤘
Hey Trogly I have a 1968 Gibson Thunderbird Bass, was wondering what your thoughts were on it.
Here's a honest question, how does richlite wear compare to traditional wood fretboards?
Mick Mars really needs his own signature Fender Stratocaster, reliced just like his, HSH, Floyd Rose and all of it's other quirks
Izzabella is a beautiful guitar, hopefully the US stadium tour coming this summer will be a push for fender
from what i've heard Fender did reach out to him but he declined, blast!
Trogly's guitar show woot 🙌
Nice bass review and liked the breadfan part you played. That was what you played right?
First time I’ve noticed the 3 point adjustment bridge…. That’s a sweet design
Cool! A signature bass for somebody who mimes to prerecorded tracks on stage.
The perfect addition to the Paul Stanley signature microphone.
What is the purpose of that plastic behind the bridge?
Mel Schacher if you need ideas for bass riffs. My bass hero!
Thank You For The Video! You did a great job on the review!!
I appreciate the time you took to take the entire bass apart!
I was wondering if the pickups were stock T-Bird pickups or are the custom wound?
Thanks Again!! 🎸⭐️
Hello trogly I’ve recently seen a guitar that I think that you will find very cool it is called the relish Mary one
I have this nikki sixx bass and a krist Novoselic bass and a original ibanez black eagle bass.
What's the purpose of that little thing below the bridge?
I didn’t know that dude played a thunderbird I kind like them thunderbirds
Looks pretty awesome really. Kinda weird the way it's wired but I don't know anything about bass. Not sure what that bracket is for either
I love it! I have been searching for a mint one for awhile
Sounds awesome.
Do you have any of the Nikki sixx cases or know where I can get one ? I have the blackbird
does anyone know what the bracket is for?
below the bridge? that's a grip, nikki sixx uses it to hold the bass in place. a lot of gibson models are known for having a heavy headstock that pulls the instrument out of playing position when using a strap. the long neck of a bass makes it especially likely to be unbalanced
Cool. We don't see too many Gibson basses. Maybe you can find some old EB0s or EB1s?
I own a Sixx Gibson Blackbird. I bought it used from someone. I love the bass, but it has aftermarket EMG’s. I want to find the original stock Gibson Blackbird pickups. If anyone knows exactly which pickups they were, I would appreciate the info.
Austin is in His House 🏠 of AWESOME Guitars 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸❤✌️

It sounded great, and as most bassist my generation (early millenials) playing through amp sim for recording is way okai with us ;)
Cool stuff
More basses!!!!!
Love ya Trog
GIBSON PLEASE make a Sixx6String LesPaul Standard with this exact 3 piece flame-maple top color/finish with the stepped-out pronounced neck through body sandwiched by 2 flame maple wingtips pointing outward at 90*. THE EXACT wood grain patterns and color/finish as the Gibson Nikki Sixx signature bass guitar reviewed here at 1:07 on Trogly’s guitar show. This is a beautiful color/finish, with a stunning non-traditional accented neck through body, I would love to have this in a 6 string…🙂
On second thought 🤔
Please polish up the wings, let’s see that flame maple dance🙂
The truss rod cover on the bass guitar would look amazing if it still said Gibson, however use the pick guard mirror with Gibson sprayed from the back.
I wouldn’t put the mirror material on the 6 string, better yet how about no pick guard on the body to really show off the wings!!!
Traditional trapezoidal pearloid inlays would look better.
Cool looking bass.
Please review the new meteora! They have a silver burst that’s amazing
at 5:56, I got a little spooked cause I thought Trogly picked up a knife and randomly just decided to assault the cam
Austin, what is that riff you're playing at the start of the dirty tone demo? I've heard it before, but can't remember the song. (I thought it was Wolfmother or Greta Van Fleet)
You mean at 14:40 ? Breadfan, by Budgie.
@@Forest_Fifer That's the one, thank you! 🙂
Such a kickass bass, you need to play a Gibson Thunderbird through a Thunderverb 200 Orange amp 🎸🎶🦅🍊
If this man isn’t the Doug demuro of guitars I don’t know which way is up anymore
Like the colors on that one.
Nice example....time for a bass amp! Cheers!
I’m so late that I’m early for tomorrow
One of the rare cases where you can buy a signature instrument and there will be a very good chance that you will be better on it then the guy it’s named after.
10/10 video title reference 👌🏻
Although the definition of "mint" does vary alot from person to person. The best way to get the most accurate version of "mint" is to be the "buyer".
3:24 we can see a little reflection of austin with his headgear camera
Nice bird bass
That has a lot more growl than I'm used to hearing from a Thunderbird.
Wooo a bass episode!
As a bass player those bridges are crap a lot of people switch to the hip shot style so it’s mounted directly to the body
This one gpimg up for sale?
Man so much I dislike in that wiring harness 😞 Personally I have only bad experience with the barrel output jack's. Both pickups always on!?? Mini togle switch I dislike to and used like that. And pickups on the wiper? Asking for trouble. All live points on same level ask for noise. Like antenna when volume on the pickups is set to low. Plus modern tone wiring. If this was my player I would change the mini together to switchcraft one and use it to switch pickups and use master volume and tone with 50's tone wiring. If you need killswitch I would use better one maybe even buckethead like one. Then I would use two volume pots with zero load to be able to mix in pickups. Or do first wiring and drill new hole and install killswitch in it.
Could you do a Justin/Dan Hawkins episode plz?
Huge fan. Any," Bird is the Word".
Looks that kill is rivaled by none🤘
great review as always trogly.
that 3 way bridge is the single reason i'll never buy another. that and the dive. and the shape... and... i've just had so many bad issues with owning these i can't recommend them.
Schecter’s version differ a lot?
It's beautiful, but IMO it would look cooler with satin center and gloss ears, so we could appreciate the flamed maple. And the controls are stupid. But cool bass anyway.
Not a gibson fan, but this is one Bass I would kill to have.
Not sure why you're on this channel?
@@216trixie because I enjoy it. I dont watch every video that comes out. But Its cool to see some of the odd stuff that he comes across.
@@figuresix that's what I thought. I get it.
i hate that Gibson 3 point bridge, replaced all of mine with a Hipshot
Great Review
Is Nice !
Nikki is one of my biggest influences, love this bass.
I was just thinking of the people that don't know Motley Crue, you missed the 80s but your back and knees don't hurt in the morning, so don't feel too bad, lol
Used to own one of these. Finish rubs off. Great bass though.
I've written it before, Trog. You do perfectly well on bass.
Nikki will be pissed when Rex Brown’s comes out
Most times, things do not come out of the factory in "mint" condition...shouldn't even be a grade for general sellers ... only collectors with a 1 in a million super special item.
Sounds way better than I expected. Gibson basses are way cheap for some reason, maybe I should consider one next instead of a Fender Jazz.
Really cool cross inlays- said no one ever. You seem to have schectar taste on a gibson budget.
That's one nice bass, man, looks awesome and sounds great as well. Sixx has always been an underrated bassist in my opinion but he's definitely written some killer bass lines
I dig the look of a Thunderbird, but neck through basses gain sustain at the expense of funk-gurgle attack IMHO. If you need that sound (for slap bass for example) bolt on neck basses just do it better. BTW, Austin, for a better slap sound, play right below where the neck joins the body.
Neck joint has less to do with it than the pickups... Thunderbird pickups just don't do slap well at all
I have a neck thru 5 string with emgs that slaps fine...
@@SgtPnkks I preach about the neck joint because I once had two Kramer Forum basses, one neck-through and one bolt-on, both with Spector P-J pickups. The neck-through could sing for days and felt smooth as butter, but the bolt-on’s slap/pick tone was a notch better (and preferred by studio engineers). The neck-through was not “bad” at slap by any means, but having lived with both neck joints in otherwise identical instruments convinced me that it creates a difference in tone.
Richlite fretboards are really cheap I’ve never played one but if your building a guitar on a budget the fretboards area only about $25 which is very affordable if you don’t mind the feeling of richlite.
Slappa da bass Trogly, slappa da bass.
Not a Nikki Sixx fan but that is one sharp looking bass, I would buy one, maybe I’ll trade my P bass
If you find me a Mapleglo 4003 with checkerboard binding and stero outputs, I'll let you do a video with it.
In my opinion I think it might look better with a black pickguard, but still keep his signature and XX.
