When I was a kid in the early 2000s, this mall was packed. I believe it was probably tighter back in the 80s and 90s. There was KB Toys, EB games, GameStop, Macy's, JCP, etc. In my late teens and early 20s, I used to take the bus over there to eat at the now-closed Chick-Fil-A before heading over to Vogelson to study. Crazy how time flies by. Now I go here to pick up my Amazon orders at the 'Daphne' locker and saw that the food court only has 1 tenant now. The only stores left that I saw are: Bath and Body works, Boscov's, and TMobile.
Some great times there on weekends 1990-1992 when that place was packed from morning to night. Malls back then were our “internet” - we searched, we shopped, and we socialized in them.
Had lived in Berlin , and remember when it was an Air Port ....Watch the Mall grow from the Grade School across the Street ....Now living in N. Carolina 30+ years ..Seems a Hundred Years AGO .....
By the way , since you filmed this 18 months ago , there have been 4 new businesses that have opened , Days 2 Remember party store , Jay’s Confectionery in food court , Plushie , and there will be a furniture store opening in Macy’s soon , I was here September 7, 2023.
This mall is so dead, Jason Voorhees should probably show up and put it out of it's misery. But in all seriousness, sad to see such a beautiful mall suffering so badly. Great video!
I am really enjoying your videos of deadmalls and hope to see more. You also visit many other interesting places that are a lot of fun. Keep up the great work, Ray!
Yeah, I remember when this place was filled to near capacity in the mid-90s with arcades, a massive food court, and shops for any demographic. I remember going to B. Dalton and copying down Street Fighter codes from the Electronic Gaming Monthly to try out in the arcades!!!
I live nearby and frequented the echelon Mall from the 70's until the present. The former Tilt where you asked what they were doing in there- they were holding dance recitals in there at one time, but the dance company has moved to another location. The room with the foosball table had been a hangout location for teens - initially a part of the Camden County Library system and then just a dedicated space for teens. The tile work was from the original Scotto's Pizza that opened there.
The last time I was here was in 2010. The food court was still there, with a Chick-fil-A near the door on the left, a yogurt place, Super China, a pizzeria, and I forget what else. It was pretty shocking seeing it so dead then, since the last time I was there was in 2001 and it was absolutely bustling. You'd think it was the Christmas shopping season. The food court you see there was actually moved down to the first floor. The area above it was an entire second floor they must have demolished that had the food court there with a balcony you could go out on. Before the 2001 visit, the last time I was there was probably the 80s or early 90s. Very busy, lots of different stores.
Thank you Ray! I really appreciate you trying to take us to somewhere interesting tonight. I was hoping that we could see where, but sometimes things don't always work out as planned. Totally understandable! I sincerely appreciate the thought and no matter what, it was great hanging out with you for a bit! Also, thanks for everything that you do and share with us on RUclips. I really enjoy your content! I only found your channel about a week ago and have been binge watching ever since. You do a fantastic job and you are a natural on camera. Keep up the great work! Happy New Year and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us in 2023. I just know it's gonna be some more great content! 👍
@@RayOutThere Hmmm, very interesting. Not sure why my comment from your NYE live stream ended up posting here. In any case....this is one I haven't seen yet. About to check it out now! Back to the binge watching! 😄👍
Great video, but such a sad, sad mall. Note - Next time your down there, there's a great Brazilain Rodizio Grill restaurant under the apartments. I hope it's still open LOL
Nice video of the mall. I now live in the Midwest and used to live in Somerdale, NJ back in the 80's. I remember going to that mall almost every weekend. In fact, I remember when they were building the food court. I still have a fishing pole that I bought at Herman's World of Sporting Goods that was inside of that mall. It's sad to see it's almost dead now. Thanks for the memories and for posting a great video!!
2:39 was most recently a qdoba, but before that it was a McDonald’s. This brings back a lot of childhood memories. Unfortunately,The Echelon Mall just couldn’t keep up with the bigger deptford mall 15 min away. I’d like to see the start to re open it. There’s so many new condos and restaurants around there. I think they would help it flourish.
Ephee’s kitchen is open in the food court along with Bath and Body Works, the karate place , dance studio, Voorhees Art center and the gym, plus the Easter bunny is now there on the first floor. I live nearby and visit Boscov’s and the rest of the mall every month or so . The outside stores on the Boulevard are still open and doing well, Rodizio Grill, Elena Wu, Iron Hill brewery and Rizzerri’s hair salon. Upstairs the mall has municipal offices and a dentist and pediatrician. Hopefully they can get a winery or brew pub in the mall soon . Thanks for the video .
It was an Auntie Ann's and a Cinnabon. The store with the red and green tile was a Scotto pizza and prior to that a Video Village arcade. Lorenzo pizza in the food court was a second Scotto Pizza. 2:11 was Super China
This was such a great mall, I remember seeing Spider Man there in 1980, and I worked at Suncoast Pictures there when I was in high school, it was in the part that has been torn down. They had great stores, great fountains, sad to see what it's become.
I've seen old pictures and this mall looked awesome back in the day. Now it is really sad, even by dead mall standards. Its not even creepy or fun to explore
Funny. I actually live about 15 minutes away from this place. I thought it was closed down years ago. I only ever went to it a couple times growing up. I remember at the height of WCW's popularity, Kevin Nash and Goldberg each had autograph signings at the Hall of Heroes store that used to be there and the lines were so long that they stretched the entirety of the mall.
2:38 was a Qdoba. Prior to that it was McDonald's and a Mr Bulky's. The Limited was on the second floor. 8:21 was a Finish Line and years ago was a Today's Man. Art gallery was Joyce Leslie. Adventureland was a game and comic store that left. Next to it was a Game Stop
Cool video, thank you for the great content! I am a new subscriber. Out of curiosity, were you harassed by security to stop filming on “private property”?
Thank you for subscribing! I saw no security or mall workers here, so I was able to film freely. I've gotten pretty good at filming discreetly. I was only stopped by security once, at Exton Square. I was standing in front of a closed storefront looking in and I had just put my camera back in my pocket when a guard stopped me. She asked if I was filming or taking pictures and I just said no and walked on
Echelon Mall was killed by it's surroundings and failure to modernize. They loss their arcade, which was before my time of knowledge but I heard it was great. The movie theatre leaving did a number. Attached to the mall, giving people a reason to come early to window shop while they wait for their movie. Not keeping up with the times would probably be the best attributing factor to it's down fall. It failed to utilize it's location to its advantage, and stagnated. Deptford Mall on the other hand was ahead of the curve. It modernized quicker and had a better surrounding area. 2 movie theatres close by. Target and Walmart. Restaurant choices. They had everything that Echelon Mall had and more and basically out convenienced them. The change to VTC was short lived because as quickly as it gain momentum, it was lost
Monmouth Mall I'd in the same shape. Now going to waste a ton of money to cover it into an open shopping mall, but likes face it, malls for the most part are a thing of the past that online shopping put under.
Thank you for your video ray. Appreciate watching them. Ray I have very good memory you and I know each other. Not well we had a light conversation can't remember what we ever talked about. This goes back years ago. If you wish me to share willing to do so right here on this site. Will post you with two other videos because I live in Warren county that you made videos on one of them was on different locations in Warren county I have to find those videos I'll put a posting there on that one and the other one was on the Phillipsburg mall. Was there probably three or four years before you went there and it was already a dying mall. I know some of the stores still exist they're not renting out and there's no lease they own the buildings when you visited that site. Fire departments are now doing drills in that mall in phillipsburg. It will eventually be demolished. I'll keep you posted and put a post there in the future.
Help you out. You used to dance in a place in watchung. And you also went to the scotchwood diner. This is how we know each other. We only talked once at the club and watchung. That no longer exists. And no there is no walk through the building is gone all together. You can't even get into the property it's private. Fence around it and everything else. If I'm wrong I'm sorry if not you know me. In the slightest way.

I live in Florida but remember walking the Echelon Mall in the late 80's when I worked at Cigna.😢
this is my local mall !!! thank you for making a video abt it. Tilt was my childhood spot
I wish I could've seen that place!

That Strawbridge seal is something you don't see every day wow. Very sad indeed to see this like this
I would love to be able to go in a closed anchor like that
That’s the next level - touring closed anchor stores. Lots of dead mall videos but dead anchor stores would be a unique take.
By the way , since you filmed this 18

Thank you! That's a good idea for a slasher movie, killer in a dead mall. I guess Dawn of the Dead is pretty close to that
I Love The Malls and Shopping centers videos
Thank you! I'll keep them coming, I have a lot of fun going to theses places

Thank you so much!
That Tilt Studio arcade was a CVS until the mid-2000s

I remember that Scotto's Pizza, and The Continental that had belly dancers.

This mall has changed a lot, but they haven't been able to bring it back to life

That sounds pretty good!
This mall was the best place in voorhees. also in the arcade there used to be a golf course and it was so fun
Awesome video man! That mall has some very interesting history! I follow the page of the memories from here
I think I follow that one too. Thank you for watching

I remember Herman's, I bought a Houston Oilers shirt there.
Hi Ray great Mall tour hate to see these malls like this that were once filled with shoppers Very sad indeed
It really is. But its also fun and interesting to explore
@@RayOutThere Definitely! I love your Vlogs!

Interesting choice!
Nice look around the dead mall

@@RayOutThere Yes, very true, I haven't been to it since 2008.
Was going to make a comment about the music but you beat me to it😂😂 I like these dead mall videos,.
Thanks!

That would have been cool to meet them!
Great video! I was there about 10 years ago. It wasn't that bad there. I stopped in after going to the Flyers Skate Zone down the road.
Thank you!

Just visited here the other day and they're closing it down permanently due to fire damage. Was such a good mall, shame to see it go.

My brother and I went to the grand opening of the Mall in 1970 and they had live rock bands i remember one of them was Air Supply
That's awesome
What do you think should be done with the rest of this mall? Should it be converted into more office space, housing, Amazon warehouse?
Anything but Amazon
Hey Ray Exton square mall is being sold to a developer love you videos
Thank you! I wonder what will happen with Exton. I'm glad I was able to film it before any changes happen.
