Van Life In The Arctic - PART TWO - Winter Content has always been a huge hit here on Living The Van Life. This winter season, I just was not satisfied with driving to a snowy parking lot and setting up camp. So instead I decided to see what it would take to live in a van in the extreme climate of the arctic. Join me in part 2 of a 3 part series as I drive my 2020 Mercedes 4x4 Sprinter Van to the Arctic Ocean.

Thanks, but i'm mobility challanged.. can only walk maybe 10ft then knees give out and have to sit in a chair with feet elevated for about 20-30min before going again. Awating knee surgery but not looking promising in the near future. 😕

Critically important: In temperature like that, start your engine every couple of hours, don't let it seat frozen all day or night, or have engine antifreeze heater system active. Second, do you know what engine oil you use? It's gotta be specific oil for arctic temps to avoid engine damage. Pay special attention to tires, rubber can become brittle, so make sure to keep proper pressure to avoid excessive flexing which may cause some cracking in rubber.

To call this trip "epic" does not do this adventure justice. Absolutely an incredible accomplishment to not only complete the trip, but to document it as you have and take us along for the wild ride. Would love to know the your thoughts on the things you did to prepare, got right, got wrong and the behind the scenes challenges. Something as simple as drone flight had to have been a struggle operating in that temperature range. Incredible series and looking forward to seeing the rest if it.

As a truck driver I know these kinds of roads and driving for hours with no one around can feel eerie and lonely but all good when you get to your destination. Your van is a cool build handling the cold like a champ.

Chad, I have much respect for your accomplishments and success on this journey. The beauty of the land and the unforgiving harshness of the climate really make you feel alive! I lived in the Northwest Territories for 10 years. There are many stories of people who were not as prepared us you who have gone in the ditch, broke down, or got lost and have perished. You were prepared and got to live it to the fullest. Thanks for sharing. Part 2 is really showing the intensity of the experience. Greetings from 🇨🇦.

Hey Chad, as a Canadian who’s worked in the far North for years. Here are a few tips.
    1. When it gets really cold. I don’t shut my diesel truck off.
    2. Layers are your friend. At -40 in a parka you can barely move.
    3. Winter front on your van. Keeps the really cold air out so your truck heats up better.
    4. This tip saved a guy I work with life. He hit the ditch in a white out blizzard and ran the truck till he was out of fuel. Then he took his spare tire, punched a hole in his gas tank. To use the little bit of fuel that was left to cover the spare. He lit the tire on fire and huddled by it until we found him in the morning.
    4. Personally I use 4 wheel drive a lot and I leave it in. Because some times when it’s really cold it would not engage when you really need it. Better to be in 4 wheel drive then to need 4 wheel drive and not be able to get it to engage.
    5. If you can help it, never let your fuel get below 1/2 a tank and always use diesel fuel conditioner.
    6. Get yourself a good tow rope. It’s not a matter of if you go in the ditch as a matter of when. So when a someone comes along they can pull you out.
(Side note I’ve been blown off those roads because your still just on ice)
Just found your channel and am enjoying it. Keep it up.

Hey Chad....Great series. Wife and I are planning that trip leaving Minnesota in mid June. You've had some great weather. I've seen some others not quite so lucky. Hope it held. One question, what's the story with the dog sitting by your front tire at the beginning of the video. We figured you were gaining a travel buddy?
