  • We were lucky enough to go to Iceland in search of the Northern Lights (and yes we did see them). While in Reykjavik we visited www.artsupplie... and I was very lucky to be given a few tubes of Renasens watercolours to try out. These are Polish, but yes, bizarrely I got them in Iceland.
    In part two, I go on to paint the Northern Lights as I wish we had seen them! That's the joy of art - you can invent your own world!! You can see that film here: • How to paint the North...

    Sadly Renesans are not readily available in the UK. They are usually a very affordable artist quality watercolour. So if you are visiting Poland or live in a country with a stockist, they are well worth checking ut.
    If you need a great range of watercolours take a look at:

    Great thing about them in Poland is that they are dirt cheap compared to any other main artist brands :D 24 pan set of Renesans - around 36 GBP here atm, meanwhile Schmincke Horadam at about 126 GBP. Talk about a difference!

      I always try to look for materials which are better than you would expect for what you pay. If you pay a lot, you expect good quality. If you pay less and get better quality than anticipated then that's a win!

    They have them in our local art shop. I am collecting them and watching this video in order to decide what else to add to my collection. They are not the best paints in the world ( a little too much binder), but they are available and afordable and I like collecting paints. The pans have better pigment load.
    They definitely never dry in a palette. I have them poured in one for several years and if I tilt the palette, ther paints will tilt as well. Two weeks ago I made the mistake to pour some Indian yellow into my travel palette and it made a mess. Well, I guess I will have to find another warm yellow in my stash to refill the travel palette. These ones are exclusiverly for studio use.

    I have some Renescens half pans which I really love. I bought them before their tube variety were released. They were being sold almost exclusively in the U.K. from a relatively small art gqllery that stocked them. The price was very good and I was and still am very pleased with them, There were a few oddly named colours, but other than that they seemed as good as many well known brands in the middle range. The cobalts in particular were very lovely. I believe they are related to the Zecchi brand/store in Italy.

    Renesans is made with honey, which often results in a shiny and gluey finish. And they tend to never dry in a palette but spill out (especially UM), so you are not able to transport them outside. I bought quite a number of them some years ago, and I never fell in love with them. I tend to grab all of the other brands I have (Schmincke, Daniel Smith, Mijello, Rembrandt, white nights, winsor & n), but Renesans sadly didn't make it for the mentioned reasons. Of cause ever brand has some stars and some "loosers". But I love white nights, which are very affordable too. That is for my experience.

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  7 месяцев назад +1

      yes, I did say that in the film. I wouldn’t use them to fill a travelling palette. I am avoiding Russian paints due to the invasion of Ukraine, so Whiteknights are off my list at the moment. Rosa is a Ukrainian alternative

      @schuhujin5019 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@LizChadertonArt yes, you did (my brain and fingers were faster 😉, so I wrote too fast after seeing the brands name). The Renesans paints dry like an acrylic on paper. At least some of them in the masstone. It looks and feels as if they were covered. The Ukraine and Russia is a very important argument, which I totally understand. I don't know Rosa paints at the moment and I don't know where to buy them here. But the recommendations are good and if they come across my way, I will give them a try. Thank you anyway, Liz, for talking about smaller companies. I found your channel a year ago and try to look all of your videos.

For environmental reasons I have not bought anything from Jacksons so far. I don't like shipping around the globe. Thank you for another wonderful video, Liz. As I work in Poland I am fairly familiar with this brand. Their 100% cotton watercolour paper is amazing quality and value. I find their paint pans really too tiny but their intense tubes are fantastic, especially the one which is a meadow yellow. They do a range of other products as well such as masking powder, masking fluid, brushes and so on. I don't really like their acrylic paints or their printing inks though. For pans, I prefer White Nights from St Petersburg or Roman Szmal from Krakow.

      @LizChadertonArt Yes, I do use them every now and then. I managed to build quite a collection (I have most of the colors), but now all of them are worth it. Some colours only work when still wet. Once they dry, you can not rewet them at all. One such colour is the light grey, unfortunately quite useless. Some colours are quite runny too, and phtalo green ruined one of my palettes because it spread all over the place. I am also not the biggest fan of that burnt sienna. The pinks, reds, yellows, and blues are nice, though. Lovely video! 😍❤️

    Hi Liz. Thanks for another informative video. I have a question which I’ve been meaning to ask for a long while. What does “quinacradone “ mean? I have quin gold and quin magenta but no idea what the quin means in the name. Hope it’s not a stupid question. Also that transparent ochre looks like DS Aussie Red Gold to me (well on my tiny phone screen)

    • @annika8877
      @annika8877 7 месяцев назад +2

      Hi, I just came across your comment and thought I might help. Quinacridones is the name of a specific type of molecules that are used as pigments in the paint. These molecules can differ to a very small degree in their structure, which then results in different colors that can range between reddish brown, orange, pink to red. So in your case the quin just refers to the general type of molecule and the terms "gold" and "magenta" are used to describe the specific color. (If you are interested in that and want to go into detail, it's worth to check the pigment numbers, for example PV19 and PR122 are magenta/pink Quinacridone pigments.)

    • @AFAskygoddess
      @AFAskygoddess 7 месяцев назад +2

      FYI: If you have fallen in love with quinacridones, better stock up fast. Many pigments have been discontinued, like the TRUE gold and orange. Quinacridones were manufactured for the auto industry. When color tastes change in cars, certain pigments are no longer made. I just bought the last three half pans of quin orange on the planet. 😢
