** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:

    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

The chilling happens as they filter it through the charcoal. It is supposed to help remove excess oils from the whisky. I took the tour about 2 months ago.

Hey guys, as an Australian, I find myself being a rum drinker first (Dark rum, as it's more accessible and it is the spirit I started on) and Whiskey drinker second (I'm fairly new to the whiskey scene and have been using your videos to learn).
My questions are; Do you like rum, as a whiskey drinker?
Do you like any rum finished whiskeys? I know you didn't particularly like the 'Grangestone Rum Finish' but I feel like that was because it was Grangestone, not the rum finish. What about the Johnnie Walker Rum Cask?
And finally, is there a place for a rum aficionado, and whiskey novice, such as myself in the tribe?
Keep up the good work guys!

Started drinking this whiskey back in the late seventies when I was in the service. Still drink it today as my inexpensive go to. Heard not only do they charcoal filter they line there charcoal vats with a cloth liner? This came from a guy I was stationed with that has family that work at the distillery. I can say the taste has changed greatly over all these years but I still prefer this over jack.. Nice review enjoy your videos..

I'm from Dublin, Ireland and I'm new to whiskey and this channel. Have had bourbons, scotch and of course Irish. I'm loving Green Spot but I'm wondering what my next move should be. Would love to try smoky whiskies but my palate is probably way too beginner for that. Keep up the good work on the channel.

Well, my father's name is Jack Daniel , and my mother was born in Tullahoma TN (home of the Dickel), so I guess it's genetic that I like my Tennessee Whisky. Dickel Barrel Select was one of my first go-to "good" whiskys, mainly because it is so friendly. It's still a standard bearer, but I've enjoyed expanding my palate over the years. My first Laphroaig 10 experience was essentially R. Lee Ermey loudly explaining that I'm not in Kansas anymore and it was time to man up.

Questions going around about what's next and the resounding answer I hear is that it's going to be similar to craft beer. What's local, what can I only get here. Moving forward with all age spirits whiskey rum and tequila. What's your take on amari could it be possible to see that fall into the craft aged spirits sector or will it stay in shadows?

Do you think that bourbon as we know it will someday stop being made or be forced to change? The rule is they have to be aged in NEW oak barrels and if the demand for bourbon keeps rising the price of the barrels might rise too, since the supply of oak will start declining, eventually forcing companies to make some sort of change.

Plant more trees, drink older whiskey, at some point the trees will catch up.

    • @Ladco77
      @Ladco77 6 лет назад

That's a valid concern. Whisky is distilled much faster than trees can be grown. The real question is how much of an impact does oak barrel construction have on oak forests? Also there are many different strains of oak, some fast growing, some slow, and they all add different characteristics to the whisky aged in them.

Hey dudes, I saw an interesting comment on Reddit suggesting you drop glass marbles into a partially empty whiskey bottle to consume volume and raise the whiskey's surface level, reducing headspace and preventing oxidation. Do you think there are problems with this storage method, or is this guy onto something? I would think they might rattle around too much or even roll out while I'm trying to pour, which is the same reason I never drink my whiskey with chilled stones.

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 лет назад

To reduce evaporation in industrial operations hollow plastic spheres are added to tanks and vats of fluids. They float on the surface and reduce the amount of the liquid surface that is exposed to the air. I would never use plastic balls or use marbles. I’ve used mineral oil in floor drains to keep the water from evaporating from the p-trap.

Amrut Spectrum has a mish-mash of staves. Not the barrel staves inside the cask, but a "spectrum" of different staves to make a new cask.
It's too bad the SWA has decided they need to stifle innovation. I'm glad Compass Box still found a way to create Spice Tree, but I wonder if they were still able to hit the flavour profile they originally wanted.
Would be fun to see a side-by-side comparison of Spectrum and Spice Tree...for Science!

Tradition is a huge part of whisky. I don't really want Scotland to innovate, other than to be completely forthcoming with what's in the bottle.
I'm happy with other countries innovating, go crazy. Let's let Scotland produce the stuff we love.

This sounds like it would be a super great base for a bourbon blend...
I'm thinking GD Barrel Select (3 bottles for the base), Wild Turkey 101 (1 bottle for the higher proof), Stagg Jr (1 bottle for the higher proof), Angel's Envy (10/12 bottle for flavor), and Blanton's (10/12 bottle for flavor).
Then letting those vat in a 5L barrel for 3 months...
Ok, I've decided my next project!

My local liquor store did a selection of this and got a hold of a 15 year old barrel. Shared a couple pours with my father-in-law (got him a bottle as a Father’s Day gift) and we both lost our minds. Its dark with molasses and gingerbread and has such a velvety mouth-feel. The epitome of smooth.

If the density of the barrel wood affects how fast the whisk(e)y moves in and out of the wood and thus how fast the whisk(e)y ages, can distillers in the US use denser wood to counteract the effect of the heat and slow down the ageing, to get something that's more like scotch?

4:34 : Daniel's Experience with the normal George Dickel
It was 4 AM, as it often was driving down the highway as all aspiring musicians do. The band was asleep, and the bass player was humming what could have only been indistinct chord progressions from the Eagles that none of the other band members had heard before, despite listening to the album together.
As one often does in the ripe furrows of the night, Daniel had an itch, a longing really, for the sweet sweet comfort of his childhood. You see, it was Daniel's birthday that particular night, so he decided that the band wouldn't mind too much if he capitalized upon their stupor and celebrated instead.
The band was only 40 miles outside of Tupelo.
With great gobs of sunflowers practically overflowing from either cheek, Daniel pulled in to what could only be described as a mix between a local watering hole and a rib shack that smelled more like grease than any natural meat product. The sign on the door read, "Pilate's, stay as long as you like."
Leaving the engine on (it was the perfect gentle rocking articulation that the band needed in order to stay asleep), Daniel spat his seeds in the gravel and entered the bar not knowing what to expect. He was alone in the bar aside from a fellow with deep jawbreaker eyes in sockets as sunken as sorrow. The listless man stared down an empty glass, silently tapping a single withered finger on the rim of his cup.
Daniel took the only other stool at the bar next to the gentleman and started, "Hello ma'am, I would like your finest Jameson. You see, it is my birthday and I'm an awful long ways away from home," to the bartender.
Before the bartender could reply, he dove into a mind-numbingly boring tale about his great adventures with his band and the reason he was in Pilate's bar in the first place. The woman did not have any Jameson, and instead poured a dingy glass to the brim with Dickel. She interrupted Daniel's story, slamming the glass onto the bar and sloshing liquid upon the whiskers of his then trimmed beard.

If you must use "new charred oak barrels" for bourbon, but makers 46 is using different staves (and I'm assuming they're in the sides of the barrels, not set in with the whiskey) is it still considered bourbon? If so, how many staves can you replace before this is not true?

    • @drb1485

Dirt Road Men Maker's 46 is still bourbon because the different staves are still new charred oak. Just not necessarily American white oak

So I went to Dublin some time ago and what I did was had many tasting while staying there, of course. And I really wanted to get myself a bottle of Whiskey as I got more interested in Whiskeys. For the past week I have been watching this channel almost 24/7 and I would like to know what is your opinion, or from the people down here. What do you think of my choice of Whiskey?
I bought the Powers Three Swallow at a Whiskey store in Dublin.

there is a souring process in making this whiskey as there also is to jack daniels guys......with exception of numerous items . one of which you guys mentioned , the maple syrup charcoal . but the souring process to the mash is what makes george dickel whiskies as well as jack daniels , unique . and is why to this day both whiskeys are known as sour mash whiskies . not bourbons .

    • @maboy1994
      @maboy1994 5 лет назад

I don't think sour mash whisky has anything thing to do with sour flavor. Per Wikipedia (and confirmed other places) "Sour mash is a process used in the distilling industry that uses material from an older batch of mash to start the fermentation of a new batch, analogous to the making of sourdough bread with a starter."

I have one quarrel however, you guys make everything seem like it goes down so easy. After watching your review of Wild Turkey original and 101, I purchased a bottle of 101 and proceeded to have my ass kicked around my apartment by it. They could do the commercial...have it be banned ...and then show it on RUclips! More people will want to see it..just because it was banned! lol. Axe-deodorant did that with a commercial of there's and got more free press just because it was banned! Consequently of course more sales! Everyone wanted to see this commercial!
