Wow, a super helpful practice technique! Your videos are so helpful. It’s hard to believe all you created for your business, even before you finished your masters! You’ve really mastered online teaching. Smart, talented, charming, beautiful, and able to get to the nugget of every problem with very actionable methods. Hi Merce, I'm 68, and picking up the clssical lessons lately. I bought a Yamaha GC 3D 1971 and its quality really pushes me to continue. I played the guitar when I was still young but only had time since my retirement to concentrate playing classical. Your lessons are not only extremely helpfu--it goes into the most basic techniques that others do not cover. Besides, your sincerity is infectious. Thank you !!!
Hola ,I came across your channel just recently and although I play an electro acoustic string guitar ,I always like the suave play of the classical musicians and Flamenco players , their technique is uncanny, also my first guitar was a Estevez , thank you for all your instructional videos and I’m loving , keep up the good work flowing ,muchas gracias Merce
You are really quite talented Merced, I love how cleanly and precisely your fingers connect with each string, really a clean lovely sound. I’m glad to have stumbled onto your lessons. I hope to learn as much as I can from your videos, Thanks so much
I am a latecomer to your channel. May I say that I am amazed at how well you explain and execute your tutorials. I read your bio, and it makes sense. You have been in contact with some of the most amazing guitar players/teachers, and you have obviously a way of putting all you learn into your playing and your teaching. Congratulations on a job well done. Thanks for posting.
Hi Merce! First of all, I want to congratulate for all your videos, especially the tutorials. In my opinion, you explain the techniques very well and in a simply way that most people can understand. What is the name of the first piece you are showing in the first 10 seconds of the video? Thank you very much and Take care.
Greetings, Merce! I just found your RUclips channel a few weeks ago and I am thoroughly impressed with your instructional content as well as your immeasurable talent! I have been focused on bass guitar for many years and finally decided to learn classical acoustic guitar to further my musical abilities. I am learning SO much from your instructional videos and I look forward every day to learning more with my new 'Maestra'! I can't wait until I join MFA to accelerate my abilities with more focused teachings from you! Thank you for concise, articulated lessons, and for being personable and entertaining at the same time!
Wow. Unbelievable. Thank you so so much. Right hand has been my problem. I'm retired now and this gives me some homework. Thank you so much Merrce. Have you ever played a song called classical gas by Mason Williams. If so ...I would love to here you play this beautiful tune.
Great video! Even when I'm not necessarily practicing for speed, I still picked up a lot of useful information for my right hand in this video. I appreciate your advice on relaxing the hand. Thank you!
Thank yo0u so much again Merce. All your tutorials so far have been very helpful. After having used my hands for hard physical labor for 40+ years my dexterity flexibility probably aren't what they could be. With consistently following your tutorials and focusing in each particular exercise I am noticing some significant change in my ability to play with clean sounding notes. Also the request for a memorization tutorial was a great suggestion from your other student. I could really use it. My expectations for being able to play well and love and appreciation are growing with each little bit of success. You bring hope to my music world. Thank you very much for that. God Bless ya Merce.
Thank you so much Tom for your kind message! It makes me very happy to know that I can contribute to your achievements and feeling of progress on the guitar! Let's keep it this way! I'll definitely work on some tutorial(s) about memorisation :) I wish you a great weekend!! 😊

This video is excellent! Thanks for publishing it! For the 3-groups, 4-groups, etc. do you only practice with index and middle or do you like to use the ring and thumb sometimes? If you do more than index and middle, what patterns do you find most useful to work on?
Best is to practice with all the combinations that I mention in the begining. Ideally those ones which the fingers tend to stick the most inside the hand after plucking. In the tutorial only i-m are shown to keep it in a digestible lenght... 😂

When shipping a guitar make sure that you detune the strings all the way to where there is no tension at all. Your guitar strings tighten at different altitudes on the airplane and if you don't make sure the strings are loose, it could pull the bridge off of the top, or even crack the headstock.
This is effectively the classical guitar/fingerpicking equivalent of what we call "bursts" in the electric guitar community. Some (extra) notes from me: First, this is NOT a beginner exercise. Before you jump into this, you wanna make sure that you're posture is right, your fingers' basic mechanics work as they should, you're relaxed (all that "starter's pack"- check Marce's video on the topic!), so you don't have to worry about those while workin' on this. Secondly, this is NOT to substitute slow "with a metronome" exercises! With this, you "teach your fingers to move quickly", just like, at some point in life, you "teach your legs to run." But, again, before this, you gotta some practice under your belt - so that your fingers are ready. And then, you add "the slow / metronome" thing to it to effectively fill up the so-called "in-between speed" space (as well as some other things such as rhythmic accuracy, musical accents (not to sound robotic), and so on and so forth).
First of all, congratulations for your channel. Very informative. Just one question. I have a problem in a-finger of the right hand. It springs out while I perform arpeppios and thus it ruins my playing. Are there any particular exercises about that? I'm desperate...
Its hard to tell if I haven't seen your right hand in action, but maybe you could give it a shot to warm up with arpeggio combinations that involve only p-m-a and practice them with planting (immediate planting to start training your A finger to remain in place). I might do a planting tutorial one day as many people have told me that they have similar issues. Hope that helps in the meantime though! Keep me posted! 🙏🏻
This is a continuation I sent to message too early, because. Like on the fretboard my fingers traveled too far. The second question, If a person is singing a song, and sings in a certain range, should that singer be trapped in a select few chords? Yet, depending on the song, it encompasses many different keys. This confuses me.
Hi you, i have one question, i have No fingernails on my right Hand. Do i need to have them to reach any Speed? Because they( my fingernails) don't grow, because of health problems. Sorry for my English, and greetings from Germany, O
you can also play without fingernails, just trim them nicely so that they don't get stuck when plucking the string and with some practice you can perfectly play with no nails :)
You could definitely try both type of strokes for one voice type of exercises. They are very different and is great if you get equally comfortable using both :)
Merce this is a follow up from yesterdays comment. I cannot believe how your left hand drills have improved my playing. I do your x pattern, and three other exercises. I noticed, unconsciously, that my left hand pinki was traveling too far and was almost poking me in the eye. Also the thumb was lagging behind, out of position when traveling down the neck. But after a couple of your tutorials my fingers are staying closer to the strings, which enables more relaxation and increases speed automatically. I can do tremolo with the right hand pinki, I guess it is labeled as S in Flamenco. I have a problem doing your speed drill, alternating from A and S, and vice versa. However, I can play in reverse order, S-A-M-I with ease. I am struggling with barre cords, between the 4 and 5 string barre exercise. There are more hits than misses, than before. I have two questions, what is the difference between a cord and a key? I thought they were the same. Question 2.

I am also a little repulsed when I see a man with long fingernails playing the guitar something about it makes me cringe... Quite lovely and wonderful for the ladies though..
I see you have very long nails. I heard the theory that the longer the nails are, the longer it takes for a string to slide to the edge of the mail. Don’t you think it slows down the speed?
I'm trying to pay close attention to your excellent advice-but you look so much like my first love, even the way you wear your hair. Ah, but that was long ago. Now then, it is very important to relax the fingers...
