  • I've been planning to do more film photography this year, so as part of my training for the 25 mile hike I'm doing in July, I took my Olympus OM-1 loaded with a roll of 35mm Ilford HP5+ to try a some black and white landscape photography. This was only my second outing with this camera, but I was pleased with some of the images that I can back with. I've really been enjoying shooting with film again, and this is something I'm planning to do more of, alongside my digital photography.

    That looked like a great hike. I've also been out for a few local hikes, sometimes with my camera, but not with the intention of video and/or photography. Sometimes, it's good just to have some alone time to reset after a working week.
    I've been thinking of returning to Torridon and the surrounding area for a while. I've now pencilled in a two week trip for next year 🙂
    I do have a family holiday in Glencoe at the start of July and will be taking my 19 year old daughter up towards the Aonach Eagaxh ridge via the West Highland way from Altnafeadh. I'm hoping there are not too many midges, but I will come prepared!

      Thank you Russ, I've really been enjoying the weekend hikes lately, and sometimes it's nice just to walk without worrying about anything else! This is a really nice walk, although it doesn't quite compare to the ridge walk over Ben Liath Mor, which I'd highly recommend if you can do it when you're next up here! I haven't had the courage to do the Aonach Eagach yet, the Liathach pinnacles were scary enough for me! I hope you both enjoy it though in July, I'm sure there won't be too many midges once you get up there! :) S.

    Hi Sam: I really enjoyed this type of video. Dementia has touched our family as my mother is going through this journey now. The concept of having bothies for the general public to take advantage of is very foreign to us in Canada. Best wishes for a successful hike and I made a donation to this worthwhile cause. Cheers, Keith

      Hi Keith, thank you very much for the donation, we're all really thankful! I'm very sorry to hear that your mother has dementia too. We chose these charities because we all have personal connections to the causes, and I think most of us know someone currently with dementia as well. These donations will really help to give us the motivation that we need to get around the hike. The bothies here are great by the way, I've only stayed in a couple, but maybe I will do a bothy video at some stage. S

    Nice video as normal. By the way the OM1 has a button battery in the base that powers the meter.

    I have only just found this video, Sam, which is now three months old. You live in a gorgeous part of the world, I have to say I'm a little jealous. As usual, you have some lovely images to go with this video. You rather downplay your expectations of what you're going to get out of your OM1 and the HP5. I don't know if you have ever come across the name Eddie Ephraums, but if not, try to check out some of the images he created with HP5 in the 1980's, they were awsome.

      @@stevej4847 thank you very much Steve! I’ve been loving taking the OM-1 out with me on a few hikes this summer, and also really pleased with how the HP5 has been performing too. It’s a learning curve, but really enjoying it! Thank you very much for the suggestion of taking a look at Eddie’s work as well, I’ve just ordered one of his books so will look forward to receiving some inspiration! S

    Great to see a video from you. Good luck with the fundraiser. We have similar thoughts on how black and white photography best works. The picture of the hut (or whatever it’s called, I’m American) looked like a historical photo.

      Thank you very much Ken, I really liked how that image of the bothy came out, it definitely has a 'vintage' feel, which is one of the thing I enjoy most about the images from this camera. Looking forward to getting out more with it! S

    Great video. Thanks. Incredibly similar story here. My father left me his (now old) OM-1 (and the light meter doesn't work) with a 50mm lens. I use it for street photography whenever I'm in London for business because it's light and compact.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks Tristan! It should be a great camera for street. I was living near Oxford when I got this one and had meant to give it a try myself but never got around to it!

    Sam, the OM1 battery compartment to power the meter is at the end and takes a PX625 equivalent battery.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Sheila, thanks for watching! I did very little with these photos. I sent the film off to be developed (I'm hoping to start developing myself soon though) and then 'scanned' in the negatives with the R5 and a macro lens, so the only processing was inverting them in Lightroom and some minor levels adjustment. So much more basic than the digital workflow! :) S

    Nice to hear your comments ref film, hard to describe, I just enjoy film, feels more magical......would only use a fully mechanical camera for the full effect. Love my Nikon F2 and when drum scanned the resulting image prints at around 26inches at 300dpi with loads of detail. The AS-I primes are hard to beat even against Z lens which cost £100's more. Also use a Hasselblad 501CM but 35mm is more than adequate....Only use digital for commercial work.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for commenting, I completely agree. I'm finding it far more 'satisfying' although I won't be hanging up the digital camera any time soon! There's definitely something much more pleasing about shooting film though. I'm currently scanning them with my R5 and a macro lens so plenty of resolution and they come out nicely so will try printing some at some stage. Would love to try a 501CM! I'm hoping to pick up a 6x6 at some stage, but it'll probably be the Bronica!

    Midges? Be pleased you don't have AML Leukaemia.
    For a medium format camera, might I suggest a Fujifilm GX680 Mark III (not IIIS) and 53mm lens. It has interchangeable backs, the back rotates to facilitate switching between portrait and landscape. Fujifilm makes interesting cameras, this is one of them. It eats 120 film. It's an SLR, you always shoot with mirror up.
    Read up on Sunny 16. F16, 1/400 for that film in bright daylight.
    To adjust contrast you need coloured filters. You can also under/over expose and over/under develop. The technical folk think it's for shooting in dimmer light than sensible settings allow, but a side effect is contrast change.
    For shooting landscapes with your Olympus, I would use the slowest, finest film I can find. I used to prefer Kodak's Tech Pan developed in Technidol.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks John, I’ve been looking at a lot of medium format cameras lately, the Fuji looks amazing and I really like the option to be able to tilt the lens, but it’s massive! Might be a bit too big for my needs as I’d want the option to take it on hikes! Currently the Bronica SQ-Ai is top of the list, I had been keen on the etrsi, but think I’d only end up wanting to upgrade to a 6x6 eventually, and the hasselblads are way out of my price range atm!
      I do actually have an orange filter for the Olympus, but haven’t tried it yet, looking forward to giving it a go! Thank you for the recommendation of the tech pan as well. It’s been long discontinued unfortunately, but Kodak do still make a T-Max 100 so I’d like to give that a go, perhaps it might be comparable. I like the price of the Ilford HP-5, but I think I might prefer the low grain/high contrast Kodak B&W more so will give it a shot!

    good to see another photographer dabbling in film, there too much photoshop/AI now for my liking, medium format? i purchased a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 518/16 for £11, with a sticky shutter, cleaned the oil of the leaves and now i have a usable medium format camera, who's image quality is very good. go for it !

      @BosePhotography  4 месяца назад

      Thanks Gary, I completely agree! It’s been really nice to just get back to the more ‘pure’ photography, really satisfying! I’ve been watching a few videos on those Nettar cameras actually and was wondering about giving one a go. I’d be keen to pick up a Bronica SQAi eventually, but a nettar might be a good idea in the meantime, it’s great to hear the image quality is good! S
