    The rules to this game sounds like a load of fun. Simple mechanics but stacking the bonuses and allowing you to collect the bonus but keep playing the same ball, is a winner for me.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 года назад +1

      Yup, any game that lets you take the bonus and keep the ball is a winner, they ought to do that on all of them (they probably do now)

    I played this as a teen about 81, near apple valley pizza place. I LOVE THIS GAME. I haven't seen one since the early 80's. I had like 12 games won, and had to go home. So I left them for others. I like the more simple ones. Newer ones got WAY TO CLUTTERED. Getting the targets down was the key.

    This is what 1979 sounded like. Computer beepers. I miss the old-fashioned mechanical bell tones I hard in the convenience stores in the summer of 1975.

    Yellow then green DOES jump you to 3x.
    Doing it completely backwards: blue, red, yellow, green DOES jump you to 5x (all the way from 1x).
    What a fun game!

    I spent hours and hours playing countdown at my local arcade from 11th grade until my second year in college. Afterwards, I got me a girlfriend and my count-down days were over. She was nearly as fun 😄.
    Fun fact: In 1980 at 2 different arcades, I came accross a machine that was identical to the Count-Down. Its graphics, layout etc., were exactly the same, except for the name. It was called "Sputnik".

    "This is what 1979 looks like!" No doubt! I *think* that there was a CountDown machine at the 7-11 right by my apartment complex, November 1979 to mid 1980. They probably got $30 of my (then) seventh grade self at that 7-11. Flash was also there, but Flash always kicked my butt. The four pinball machines at my 7-11 were probably replaced by the end of 1980 by Battle Zone, Asteroids, Defender, and Missile Command.

      Very cool.... Think of the money that game must have made. I had a guy I worked with who operated games back in the day, and he said Defender made $800 the first week in his bowling alley....

      That was the original design for the machine it was designed to be I dream of Jeannie but they couldn't get the intellectual property so they made it anyway and called it countdown rather than I dream of genie.

    The later Mercury capsules (Redstone 4, Atlas 6 onward) had a large window in front of the pilot. Earlier ones just had a tiny porthole on both sides.

    The pinch the Astronaut is showing to the Girl means I'm just .going a little bit further on this trip. I'm rusty on my hitchhiker lingo and the same with my CB 10-4 codes too. Played Count Down when it was brand new at our bowling alley (The same Bowling alley in Bill & Teds Excellent adventure). The only thing that disappoints about the System 1 games is you do not have a carry over/memory function. every ball is the same. So you will see a lot of them set to 3 ball mode. Still on of the best games of all time is Sinbad, Love Count-Down and I have The Hulk in my house.

    I helped a guy here to fix his Count-Down some months ago, had a solenoid problem, one of the upper flippers kept popping fuses.

    We had a theory that pinball machines had a magnet under the outlane(s) that would activate if you were doing too well. This theory was boosted by later games that did hold the ball in place with a magnet.
    Another theory was that the pinballs were filled with mercury that would slosh around creating unpredictable spin.
    The path of the pinball is a combination of horizontal speed, vertical speed and spin. Your eyes can’t see the spin. It might be interesting to put dots on a pinballl (fingernail polish?) and watch the spin.
    Another secret that explains the song pinball wizard, and my own abilities, is that I only see with one eye at a time. Depending where the pinball is in your field of vision, there is a handoff between your two eyes, and that’s the instant in which you have to decide what to do. That small delay is what causes you to make mistakes and drain the ball.

  • @Success2gether

    Great game. So those are not actual slingshots at the bottom? Interesting...

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  5 лет назад +3

      Gottlieb had a problem where their board system could only handle so many coils. And it wasn't many. So they needed extra coils on this particular game for all the drop targets, and I suppose that meant they had to get rid of the slingshot coils. Slings are kind of meant to be similar to flippers (just automated) so since the game had 4 flippers I guess they felt they weren't necessary!

    I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere, the system 1 games were bulletproof back in their day.. It wasn't until later, when they aged, that they became problematic and got a bad rap..

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 года назад +1

      That very well could be, i'm not sure.. .but I definitely think they get a bad rap. I honestly love them, once you repair them, the things are good to go, they're just not that complex which some people can't stand, but I like the EM's and these are slightly more complex than the EM's so that's good enough for me. The good news is the Gottlieb Solid State games are cheaper than all the other companies, because people are convinced they're not as fun, even though they've never played most of them! More Fun for you and Me! Thanks for watching Corneleous!

    What...system 1 boards not working? They never act funny...lol. Still easier than dealing with System 80 boards. Back glass is sweet. That's a Gordon Morison for ya. I think the system 1 games sound way better through chimes than the sound board. I had an encounters and I really hated the sound effects...but my Joker Poker on the other hand...oh yeah. Chimetastic. Thanks for sharing the video sir.

      @@LyonsArcade Out of all the early solid state Gottliebs it's definitely my favorite. It's one of only 2 tables in my collection that I consider safe. lol. Since you were talking plastics in another video,I thought I'd mention that I'm in the process of making sexier plastics for my JP.
