To those arguing about my "songwriting". I do not intend to be The Beatles, Neil Young, or Cheap Trick. If you feel these are not complete pieces of music without vocals, that is fine. I will continue to do what my intuition tells me. Feel free to listen to The Beatles, Cheap Trick, or Neil Young. Andy
10 years later. This specific video has opened up my ears to listen more and enjoy the art and passion of acoustic style music. Especially the talent behind it. You and Antoine Dufour were the only sounds that helped me sleep when I was going through a tough time in high school. Cheers.
I'm a decade late here, but who would say these things about such beautifully evocative and definitively complete pieces of music? Your art is fascinatingly beautiful, thank you for it.
Andy, you are amazing and so is this song. I feel like only a musician would truly understand what an amazing feat it is to evoke the mental imagery of an asian city with the use of only a solo instrument. You are a master. And the journey to mastery is never finished. It is eternal. Thank you for this beautiful piece. Just keep doing you, play with your heart and follow that intuition and music will manifest itself. I am forever grateful that you had the courage to do so. You changed my life.
No words needed for your music. I have been listening to you for years and saw you live in Toronto.. Really incredible composing.. Absolutely special..
Man... I first heard this song as a teenager and loved it. Then i stopped playing guitar and after soooo many years I went here I listened to it again... And tears in my eyes... Beatiful masterpeace... And you know what... I am going to the basement in a minute to clear the dust from my guitar... Thank yoi Andy... So much... For inspiring me ;)
Andy McKee is just simply an amazing guitarist and creates beautiful works if art. His songs can do anything from help you sleep to inspire you for anything Simply amazing!!!
Just when I think it's all been done before and there's no magic left in the world, along comes someone like Andy who lifts my soul with his wonderful, timeless music. Thank you Andy, you're a bona fide genius.
Im studying everything i can about modes and scales, while breaking down his genius flow. Its getting simpler and simpler to imagine playing. Hes my inspiration to get better. Mad love needs to be given to this man.
cant get better than this, the chords and the melody in general fit the title so well, and its all just put together so neatly ... this is one of the fines pieces of music ive ever heard
This and Justin King's Paris Morning. My two songs to remind me that everything will be okay. There are fucked up and deceitful people in this world and these songs' melodies make me feel warm and want to pass on good vibes to everyone I meet. Sorry to sound fruity, everyone, but I hope your days are filled with chill memories and laughs and shit.
Thanks bro. I know exactly what you mean. Like you just wish there would be no more pain and suffering in this world. I don't want anyone to suffer. Thanks again man.
Dude...i swear reading your comment was like reading myself, i agree 100 percent in everything you say. Justin and andy (these 2 songs in fact) they make me feel okay and alive. Bring me so much peace of mind
its hard to believe that someone playing something so beautiful with such finesse, diversity and ease is only in his twenty's. Andy Mckee, you are the genius of this generation and of many to come.
Hm, i first heard this song like 7 months ago, and i didn't really like it. Im very into candyrat stuff, but this just wasn't my thing. Despite all this, somehow, that intro stuck to my head, and for the past several weeks, i couldn't let it go - even forgot the name of the song, being unable to find it. Today I was watching Two and a half men, and there is an episode where Charlie mistakes Chang Pu for Shanghai, and then i've remembered it. Im gonna enjoy learning this one so much
I spent 3 months in the Bahamas in the summer 2008. On an island called Andros. I got quite into free-diving. And on a constant weight dive to 25m, i got quite out of shape, lot a fin, and had to swim back down and get it, on the way up i was seriously low on O2. I had the bridge of this song in my head, and I'm convinced it saved me. And gave me one of the most exhillerating and amazing memories of my life thus far! I hope the man himself reads this.
How this can be so expressive, so incredible, so beautiful, so sentimental, so touching, so inspirational... Because he's expressive, incredible, beautiful, sentimental, touching, inspirational... He's not only a great guitar player, he's an excellent human being...not everyone can express feelings in that way. Amazing
you tell them ANDY. :D what i love about his music is that it transcends all barriers. and they are timeless like Micheal Hedges and Don Ross' music. every piece is an instant classic and will be cherished by those who seek true music i had 2get away from the radio and TV. Andy i wish nothing but millions for you. i have bought 4 CDs and i can't wait to give you more of my money. and i told you this at the Mint, your father and Mike are smiling! we are all smiling when you play. 1 million stars!!
so powerful and moving. amazing how he can put so much emotion into a song without words. every song he plays tells its own story. andy mckee is truly incredible
@ethannagel I was in the same boat as you, and now im attending college to study performance in classical guitar. i played for probably three years before i came across mr. mckee a few years ago. he totaly changed my perspective of playing music. he has deffinently started a revolution for my personal musicianship.
YES! I believe Andy's music liberates the mind, enabling it to re-experience those truely special times in ones life that become clouded with time. From mountain valleys to seascapes, the clouds lift with the clarity of the notes. His work is a that of posterity to man kind. Absolutely spectacular!
Calling Andy's talent " god given " is robbing him of the credit he deserves for the dedication and hardwork he put forth in creating his music. Don't trivialize this man's passion for music and hardwork by dumbing it down and calling it a "gift". This wasn't handed to him from birth, he earned it.
I've always practiced playing rock and metal on guitar, lately i've been trying to achieve the effect this man has with the guitar, its amazing what the music does for you.
what i love about this music is that it brings out someone's raw emotions. There are no words to influence you. The first time i heard this song, my eyes kept watering. You can not only hear the emoitn pouring out of his guitar, but you can feel it if you allow yourself to get lost in the music.
wow, when i listen to this its like i can forget about everything else and just relax, think of good times, imagining a great place, a great escape from all the noise of today
I still love these Andy McKee vids. In my humble opinion these early versions are still the best sounding. Songs like Keys to the Hoovercar are among the greatest, that flow...! Rylynn, is beutiful and still a returniong favourtie to play also. Thx for the music.
I have listened to this song almost since it came out. Seems so long ago now that I see it was 15 years ago... It has helped soothe me through the roughest of times. I think I'm ready though, and when I finally do it I think I wanna be listening to this. It always makes everything seem like it's gonna be okay. I'm hoping it'll make it feel okay... Thanks for all these years of enjoyment and healing 👍
This man is obviously doing exactly what he is meant to do. Andy, you're one of my favorite musicians and it would be an honor to shake your hand. thanks so much for your music
When I first listen to the intro, I think this song would be boring. So, I just click on other songs. But just now, I decided to listen to this song completely. You don't know how I feel. I'm really impressed. Words can't describe this. Very beautiful.
To the people who asked me to explain how all Andy's song helped me become the man I am today, His music flows, emanating through ones Mind, Soul, and Spirit. Words and speeches aren't required to make a good man or a good song. All it it takes is a little Music to touch the soul, and Andy has the ability to reach out and help people. His songs helped me realize that life isn't all bad. He is a true Musical Genius and makes some of the greatest, Soul deep music in the world.
this guy has just bottled up the most amazing emotions and brought them to my ears... absolute genius.... thank you for making this music absolutely, inexplicably, entirely, unbelievably (every adjective you can think of) amazing
the thing is, that these guy has an absolut fantastic feeling for timing and rythm... these 10 piesec are mindblowing.. I love them all!! ..need his cd´s!
all around one of the greatest guitarist in the world hands down! he does not make not one single mistake.EVER! he is the perfect guitarist! watching him is like watching a good movie...never a dull moment! BRAVO MASTER BRAVO!
I post comments all the time on this dude because he is outstanding. there is no musician on this planet that comes close to the feeling that he puts into each piece. A god amongst insects.
Saw him live a couple of weeks ago, and he was tuning his guitar different almost after every song. He said that he gets inspiration from tuning his guitar :D THis guy is so amazing, my favourite guitarsist for sure, pure skill!!
I don't think words accurately describe just how awesome this style of music is. The room that was recorded in looks amazing too, the wood paneling definitely adds to the style of the sound. Perfectly brilliant and I'll be browsing for a CD. Or 2. Or 8,000.
this sounds so beautiful. It reminds me so much of one of my favourite instrumental folk guitarists, Micheal Hedges. He passed away. We lost an exceptional gentleman and artist. Best wishes.
@supern00b the intonation IS perfect..... the sound he gets out of that is beyond music.... each note resonates ... never saw anyone do this before with such beauty and precision... all while making the notes flow. I'm officially impressed
ive started playing a complete polar opposite genre of music because of you andy. thank you for opening up my music standards and my mind. your a great musician
You have inspired me to pick up the guitar again. I was so into it at one point in my life but then fell away from it being busy and all. Thanks for your heart of music.
Well Said. I saw Andy in Montreal on his first show there at McGill U. and he profoundly human and willing to share his knowledge. Definitely to become one of the 'greats' like Don Ross, Michael Hedges ,etc.
Anyone else here a window's XP alert sound at 36 seconds? Just faintly in the background... This is an awesome song though, I started listening to Andy Mckee songs like half a year ago.. kinda forgot about them, just so busy! But they're even better the second time around! This man is ...amazing. I honestly have no words to do him justice.
Man.....Even if you dislike guitar players, you can't help but to fall in love with this guy and his music, (no homo....Andy is just my male crush, Haha.) But seriously, the way he plays just draws you to him and makes you sit there and listen to the entire song. Then when it ends, you have a sad face and want to cry a little. But then you notice he has more videos. And get a smile again.
Andy's Comments: On the last day of my tour in China, I was sitting in my hotel room in Shanghai and this tune pretty much jumped right out of the guitar with little effort on my part. Shanghai is a beautiful, modern town with some amazing architecture and wonderful sights, but I couldn't help but start feel a bit homesick.
You are a musical genius, simply put. The normal boundaries of music obviously don't apply to you, wish I could break them like this without losing the music itself. Beautiful

Really the best Andy McKee!
Simply due to the fact that it says "Andy McKee" in the title, instant 5 stars
I just revisited this video after a while away from listening to Andy Mckee. Reading this comment took me back to the early years of RUclips haha.

It's good to know, that there's music, which makes me just..feel good. Thanks.
this is def. one of my favorites by Andy. It's hard, I think, to pick an all time favorite by him, since his songs are so diverse.
