  • In this video I’ll be evaluating a laser engraver, this EleksMaker A3-PRO 2500mw unit was given to me by Banggood, a web based trading site comparable to Amazon or AliExpress…
    My main fields is manual machining using more traditional machines, meaning no CNCs, this is quite my first experience with this kinda of technology, at first I was a little reluctant to enter the field and the perspective of living frustrations after another was quite present, on the contrary, the process went quite smoothly and the few bugs were resolved without too much trouble. Let’s agree that this is still entry level experience, as the experience is quite positive it encourages me to keep learning and experimenting in order to get this engraver to produce some items that will be included in my current video production.
    If you’re looking to get an entry level or a basic laser engraver, this EleksMaker unit is a great add on to your tools and the price is attractive enough to start in the world of CNC controlled machines without ruining most of us…

    Dear Professor Pierre , I Like All Your Videos You Are To The Point , You Are Honest About Conditions Pertaining To The Work At Hand , And A Good Teacher ... Just Pull The Handle And Flush The Naysayers

      Hi Stephen,
      Don't worry about the Naysayers, I'll handle them, one reality about making videos on RUclips or anywhere else, is that it's impossible to make everyone 100% happy, the best thing to do is things that are fun to produce to be honest and open to to constructive suggestions... ;)
      Thanks for your nice comment and for priceless support, Pierre

    Hey Pierre! I have been waiting for a new video :) Glad you did this review I have been thinking of making a laser engraver purchase. Thanks!

      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад

      Hi Randy,
      Good, I'm glad that you get something from it, some other people don't like reviews from Asian comercial plateforms...
      At first I was sceptical, but, everything went smoothly enough to encourage me to mention that the experience was positive in the final evaluation, as an entry level machine it does quite well, it's sturdy, uses standards replacable parts, easy to upgrade, reliable, easy enough to perform basic operations, possibility of growing in complexity as far as performances, even the price is attractive... ;)
      As I wasn't really to spare some time getting familiar with that side of CNC controled machines, it went smoother than expected, if it works for me, it could help other people enter and try without spending a fortune the new expereinces related to computer controled machines...
      Thanks for your comment, PIerre

    Pierre.
    I struggle with your videos sometimes, but from day one your integrity and honesty has always shone through. The people here questioning that because Banggood offered you a deal show amazingly poor judgement.

      Hi, I'm trying to express what is my experience with the product, sure can't see 100% of all aspects, but trying to point out the strong point and also the limitations so people can make an enlightened purchase, I'll only talk positively about a product if I would purchase it for myself and enjoy using it, got a few other products that I got a while ago and waiting for some time in the shop to share my impressions... ;)
      BTW, except for very few products like this laser engraver that was given to me, I pay for the products just like you would purchase those yourself, no better price of favor at purchase...
      Thank you for letting me know about your precious support, Pierre

    I gave this a thumbs up, if for no other reason, because of your statement about unboxings. I'm really tired of people doing them because there's just too much of it on youtube anymore. I did enjoy the review though even though I don't have any interest in getting an engraver.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад

      Those "Unboxings"....!!!!
      I got this engraver to see if there could be an easy way into CAD/CAM, CNC without it being too difficult, this turned out to be a pleasent entry into that world, I really mean some first steps, there is a world to discover and at least the "Ice is broken"...
      Thanks for viewing and for taking the time to write a comment, Pierre

    Question! If you take a piece of sheet metal or brass plate, paint it and then laser it will it remove the paint? I wonder because it would be great for etching ID plates for old machines and such if it can. The areas with removed paint could then be subjected to electrolysis for etching.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад +1

      It will definitely burn a thin layer of paint, haven't tried to test how clean it would do it to further perform some etching, if you do coarser detaild I'm confident that the results will be decent...
      Latley I'm quite taken with my older parents requiring lots of care from the four of us brother and sisters... Can't make any promises about having some available time soon to try it.
      If some other viewer has any expereince about the subject it would be great to have some feedback... ;)

    That needs a protective enclosure. The 2.5 w laser can easily damage your vision. Just reflections off something you are engraving could be dangerous!

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад +2

      You're absolutely right about it..... Just about anything above Class 2 is dangerous for eye sight, this 2.5 watt in Class 4 is VERY dangerous if not well used with proper protection...
      Thanks for your input, Pierre

      I accepted just before asking myself where I was gonna store it after my wife kiks me out of the dining room, in fact, this is exactly what I'm negociating at the present moment... lol
      So far I find it a fun little machine and an easy introduction to the world of engraving plus CNC machines... ;)

    Hi pierre, I was thinking that with the right setup that would possibly engrave PCB's ! That would be VERY useful. Keep well.

      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Malc,
      This is another imaginative way to use it, proobably on coarser PCB lines, though, the edges aren't perfectly smooth as there is a little bit of a raster pattern depending of the resolution, all kind of uses that are worth testing, but definitly etching is one of it...
      Let me know if you see some of those creative uses being used successfuly... ;)
      Thanks, Pierre

      Agreed that a 3D printer is a great first choice in our field, easy to produce some prototypes or even plastic based parts to complement metal working projects, I've seen the one Philippe got and it's very iteresting. Probably in some near enough future... ;)

      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад

      Light metal engraving is another option to be explored, can't promise that it will happen, but, possible if the oportunity is there, laser in itself offers me a few nice options, mostly on other materials like wood or leather, it would have been an ideal tool last Fall to engrave the boxes for the Jack Screw kits related to the WIYB giveaway...
      Thanks for watching, Pierre

    Seems like it would be fun to play with, but after a few days I'd be scratching my head trying to figure out what real use I have for it.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад

      All depends on how you like to craft new things and in what field you're operating, this engraver would have been VERY adequate to engrave the boxes for the "What's in your Box" projects we performd for Keith Fenner''s giveaway, and other things in the future, most of the time, just having a tool available is making your brain looking for new creative ways to use it... ;)

      The only time I got this problem is when my System on Windows wasn't totally US, including puctuation, dates, numeration, etc, possible that the code sent don't get the right separators due to System change...
      For now nothing else comes to my mind, mine is still functionning well after the System was changed to US...
      Hope it works for you, if not Banggood should be able to assist you.
      Regards, Pierre

    Does it cut thin plywood ?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад +1

      Would need to be quite thin and lite grade plywood, I would estimate about 1mm maximum, it could require more than one pass, it can very well cut folder cardboard even thicker is also possible, some fiddling on the adjustments will be required, though...

    • @johnfiott
      @johnfiott 5 лет назад

      @@pierresgarage2687 That is very interesting. I was looking at a competitor which has a 1600mW laser and that apparently does cut thin plywood beyond 1mm. Which brings me to another point. How does one know that something that is labelled as 2500mW - or even 15000mW for that matter - is really what it says on the label? Not criticising your review of course but the inconsistencies in results - such as the point I mention here with the competitor - do bother me a little in terms of what the consumer really gets for his money.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад +1

      I've used this laser more to write in hardwood, not really experiment with cutting in thin lite plywood, in hardwood the marking can go from quite deep to a lite finer marking, if you make bigger letters or drawings you can increase the power to max at lower speed, this really burns the surface in deep, for much finer lettering or finer details, you adjust to just burn shallower on the surface, since I've not played or have any lite plywood on hand I would not want to affirm with certainty it does what you expect from the device.
      As an example, I got one sample of actual marking on maple, the penetration of the laser is about half of a millilitre, take note that I was only marking and not trying to cut through, I'm confident it would not be a problem to cut a piece of lite plywood of at least 1mm quite easy and probably a little more in a single pass...

      @@pierresgarage2687 Noted, thank you for your comprehensive reply. May I just ask one question about the CO2 laser please? Are there consumables involved or is it just a matter of buy and use?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад

      With the CO2 laser you may have to change the lens once in a while if it gets cloudy or altered by fumes or contaminants, other than that it could be a decent solution, way more costly than those laser lasers, you could get power around 50 watts, this cuts pretty well in many materials, but not in metals, though.

    can you try in on glass

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад

      It's not going to work on glass, ceramics or metals...
      One way to do something on those surfaces, is to put a layer of paint or something and burn that layer...

    Hi Pierre. I like your video's but could only watch about 3 minutes of this one. I'm so sick of hearing reviews of Banggood products. I can see why you are tempted to do these reviews after being offered free stuff but RUclips is littered with them now. I did not say anything about you being a shill to Banggood. Maybe if "Banggood review" was in the title we would know what was coming. Still love your channel by the way. Best wishes.

      Pierre is up front, puts his cards on the table, and gives an honest review. This engraver would have been quite usefull for the projects he made in the past, wiyb giveaways etc. He actually has a couple of products on his bench he will not review, (The saying is, if you have nothing good to say - say nothing at all) He shares the pleasent suprises with us, and adds to our knowledge of what's out there.
