Hello and thank for this excellent review of the Nikon Z fc. it is one of the most in depth reviews. I love the retro look and I already own the full frame df. What I would like to see covered and it seems that no one covered these features as yet, is the benefit and uses of having Wi-fi and Bluetooth built-in. Thanks, feel better now that I've seen this. I ordered the Black and Brown version kit 16-50mm this morning and will make final decision when I see in person. Hi! Awesome Video. Looking forward for a full frame of this camera. Looks promising use, for starting a mirrorless & enthusiastic (non professional) photographer. Thanks a lot.
As usual, I enjoy your videos, it looks like you used a tilt shift lens on some of the close-ups of the camera. I recently bought a tilt shift adaptor on eBay and I’m looking forward to doing this kind of photography. With mirrorless it opens up a lot of opportunities that aren’t available with your DSLRs because of the short Back focus found on these cameras. Nikon being the shortest of all of them which allows for a lot of adaptation. Again, thanks for your video and I hope to get a black version of this camera eventually. I recently sold my FE FA and old Nikkormat and bought some old glass from some classic cameras to use on my Z5. It’s brought new life to my photography having something new to shoot with. Kind of like your wife getting a new pair of shoes it makes her want to go for a walk. Ha ha Regards, Gerry.😊
I can't agree with you more on the full-frame!! I would also like to mention that I will prefer that I can use the same battery as other Z series. Thanks for the video. The most in-depth one that I can find. Just ordered mine. I will use it with my Z7II
Awesome video ! I was kinda disappointed at first with the reveal but after watching your detailed analysis im kinda liking this camera. I'm on the verge of switching to mirrorless so would love to see a Zfc - Z6ii comparison. Thanks for the great video !
Looks awesome Ricci, Can't wait to get one of these in my hand. Just like you an FX version would be amazing and that would certainly become my daily shooter - I'm thinking a ZF based on a Nikon F3 - The gorgeous classic black with the red stripe - FX sensor, and chuck us a 35mm f2 with the AIS style design WOULD BE AWESOME. Top work fella!
Excellent review Rikki, just found your channel. Love your approach and presentation. This new Nikon offering reminds me of my old FM2 as well. (Think someone else said that too!) Subscribed.👍🇦🇺😎
so helpful.... preordered earlier but this sealed the deal. your videos are brilliant. (you also helped me with my decision to buy the z6ii- so good). thank you.
I’ve been toying around picking up the Z50 for vlogging but was waiting to see what was in the works. Thank you Nikon for creating such a beautiful camera! Reminds me of my FM2n that I still shoot regularly. The flip out screen and advanced autofocus system definitely sells it for me as the vlogging camera ive been waiting for. I will be purchasing this camera to pair with my Z6 & Z7
@@angeloregina Nikon didn't release a DX cropped sensor with IBIS yet ( I believe neither Canon does) ... most of the dx lenses have VR unlike the full frame lenses which usually don't... as if Nikon doesn't want people to use FX lenses on DX bodies
I agree that would be nice, but honestly I wouldn't hold your breath. Nikon rarely makes DX primes. However, I have to say the 16-50VR / 50-250VR kit zooms are really good. So good maybe, that Nikon says, what's the point? If you really want a prime, just use the FF ... (like we see today). And the FF compact primes don't get VR ... oh well...
Really informative video and impressive AF performance from an attractive design. I hope the Z fc will sell well for Nikon. Not a priority for most but as a retro enthusiast, I would enjoy seeing coverage of the manual focus assist functions, focus peaking etc, when using adapted manual lenses, vintage or new.
Looks great. I wish it had IBIS and shutter speed of 1/8000. Great to see 3 by 3 framing and wide-area Auto focus. Looking forward to comparison to Z50 and Z6 II
I have a Z6ii which I went to from a Z7 to get the second card slot and because I never have a need for 45+ MP. I LOVE the "look" and design of this camera, and if I get one it will be to replace my Z50, my "walk around/weekend camera" as you so accurately described. So I'm disappointed, a little, that it still retains the one card slot only design, and I do like the large GRIP on my other Z cameras. But boy... the nostalgic look of this beauty is really appealing. Hmmm... guess I'll slap my Z50 body on eBay and see what it will bring as autofocus is a BIG deal to me and I'd love to improve that over my Z50. Wish me luck. Great video (something I never shoot, by the way).... Thank you!
Ricci, very helpful coverage. I have been eagerly anticipating this puppy since the very first rumors. (I'd actually just purchased the Z50 but returned it when rumors of this came out). I've put in a pre-order with the 28mm lens. And, like you say, I'd also LOVE to see a full frame version of this, maybe with the higher resolution Z7ii sensor. I'd buy that as well and use it with primes. I've pre-ordered the 28mm f2.8 but given it will be sometime before i can get my hands on it, if you could share more of your findings on the image quality of that lens, that'd be much appreciated. Thanks again, Craig
Have been shooting Canon for 2 decades but this little camera really peaked my interest. Perfect weekend camera or for small family trips, It has eye auto focus and priced better than a Fuji. I just wish the 28mm lens would have an aperture ring. Any case I might just pick one up for fun and play with it for a few months. Thanks for the review.
Hello! Thank you for a good introduction to what I considered a wonderful Nikon piece, I'll be following whatever else you come up with about this camera, I'm certainly planning to get it. How about telling us more about lenses for it ???
Please do a comparison focussed on wildlife and bird photography. I am new to your channel and I noticed the long range Nikon lens in the background. Please do a autofocus, buffer size and frames per second (in RAW) comparison with Z FC, Z7 II, D500, D850 and Z9.
It's beautiful, no doubt about that. But it's just not enough to keep me from leaving Nikon to switch to Fuji. Can't wait to make that change really. Great review though!
Thanks for another great video. I recently bought a Z7 II, which I had planned to complement with a Fuji X100. But this will be a much better choice for a smaller camera. It reminds me of my first Nikon, the FA. Obviously demand is already huge, and then there’s the question of money as well…
Presentation as impressive as the camera itself! The autofocus is sick, I don't think my Z6ii is as good, especially in studio with dimmer lighting. Would be interesting to compare!
Ricci, it's always a pleasure to see your videos - thanks. I have some 45 years with Nikon and if I were nostalgic, I'd want it to look like an F2 with a basic prism finder. Pro grade F-mount FX primes and single digit F and D experience followed by Z 7 now Z 7ii. The Z FX "S" glass is phenomenal and there's no looking back. The ergonomics of the Z cameras is excellent. I would have liked some of the controls for manual operation on the outside, but do not want to lose the display on the top of the camera. I do not necessarily want retro design. And have never been a fan of grips and winders. Looking at my glove size, my hands are large, not extreme, and there are no issues in holding Nikons as-is. It's a pity that some of the Z/S lenses do not have the display, turning them into an E version of the S class. I would want better information about depth of field added for all lenses, a better organization of menus that have a relation but are in different chapters of the menu system today. And I really need a constant EV dial. If I shoot manual and measured EV=13 1/125@f/8 and now want to go to f/2, I need to adjust two things instead of one. A constant EV dial would get me to 1/2000@f/2 in a couple clicks on a single ring and all the in between settings are at EV 13. As to DoF, I want to be able to set my camera up quickly for a depth of field starting at distance i and ending at distance j. The reason is we often cannot focus shift+stack and we may not have a lot of time to fire test shots - the sophisticated computer in the camera and the lens database have enough power and data already, I presume. Just give me a DoF scale on the back display when I need it. Yes, it's more elegant on the lenses with display, I get that. As Nikon apply the laws of physics to the aperture value of the MC 105/2.8S (I have it) I assume that what I see on the lens's display comes from the camera and I would not be surprised to see different DoF on a Z 6(ii) than on a Z 7(ii) because of the smaller circle of confusion in the Z 7(ii), even. Or, Nikon san, do not hold me hostage any longer.
"I would have liked some of the controls for manual operation on the outside, but do not want to lose the display on the top of the camera. I do not necessarily want retro design." I wonder if this might appear in a higher-end version, maybe with full-frame! I too like the top LCD. "Just give me a DoF scale on the back display when I need it." You'd think modern cameras would be perfect for this, but no. Maybe the designers think it's too much information? For mirrorless, though, that info is in the EVF - really, it's WYSIWYG. But I'm not sure about two full-frame sensors with identical lenses and settings having different DoF - I'd assume the DoF would be effectively identical (you'd just have more "information" in the transition between in-focus and out-of-focus).
Hi Ricci, have greatly enjoyed your various talks about the new Zfc and have preordered. Only starting using Nikon earlier this year (gave up with Olympus) and purchased a D780 which is great but I do find the autofocus slow when shooting birds of prey and, last week, puffins. Will the Zfc be quicker and do you think the animal eye focus will work well with birds? Many thank. Terry
Hi Ricci, always love your 'first look' videos! I would really like to see how the Zfc works with existing Z lenses that most users are likely to have e.g. 24-70 f/4S and the 1.8S primes. Also, would like to see how the camera works with the FTZ and old AIS lenses. I'm mostly interested in how it feels to hold and operate, given so many of us Z users are attuned to the industrial design ergonomics of modern Nikon cameras.
Thank you for all the useful details shared. Kindly how important is the IBIS for amateur use to take nice "travel" photos and especially short videos (of products, food, ... for social media)? The aesthetics and ergonomics of the Nikon ZF C please me, but the options (including the IBIS) of the Fujifilm XS 10 seem very interesting.
Looks great. And current Nikon users will be interested for sure. But I think it'll take a full frame version to really carve out a spot of their own in that market which Fuji dominates. I think it'll be pretty hard to lure current Fuji users away with this even though it looks to be better in many ways.
Great video, thanks! l have my eyes on the 28mm this camera has stock for my z6 (I've also watched your video of that lens, of course!). l film all my hiking videos with a z24mm f1.8s, but that 28 mil is so small and compact... Sweet!
Great vid Ricci! I was wondering if you could do a vid comparing different speed boosters (metabones, zhongyi, kipon) on the z fc. I think it makes a lot of sense for people wanting to slowly transition into z to put a speed booster for f mount on this. It would save them a lot of money too.
It looks like Nikon's Fuji competition - an adapter to use Fuji lenses would be very cool. Also, since the sensor and processor are most likely identical to the Z50, there will be uproar if the Z50 doesn't get the software upgrade (after a suitable commercial delay of course)
This is my everyday camera with 28mm. I love the design great job Nikon. Yes true I don’t want to cary my d750, d810 or z7ii, I know this camera with not replace my full frames but it’s just amazing tool. Another advantage I can use all my F lenses 😊!
That retro look is what attracted me to the Fuji x series cameras. This reminds me of that minus a grip. While it looks like it might be more manageable as far as holding it, a grip gives users more confidence.
Very interested in the Zfc....you didn't talk about the hot shoe, any problems using any flashes such as the 400 or above? Great intro video, I'm all in...I miss my retro F, F1, F2 film cameras and the way they felt in my hands...thanks so much
Once again Ricci Talks has the real information and a great overview of a new product. I like the design because of my fond memories of my old Canon A1 which was my main camera I traveled to about 50 of my 91 countries. The 28 is a great walking around FL for tourism using DX. Although I never have a problem with AF on my Z6 which has caused my D850 to sit on the shelf 90% of the time, the tracking speed and distance were impressive on the FC. Unless my income improves a lot this coming year (my main two businesses are incoming tour operator companies in St Petersburg Russia, one of the most photogenic cities on earth and the border just opened yesterday for visitors from more countries, a hopefully sign) my next investment will be a Z72 for the larger files my studio clients want so I can move fully to the S lenses. One question those of us who used retro cameras when they were cutting edge instead of nostalgic, how would you rate the responsiveness of the FC. Does the capture occur faster than the Z6/7. That is one thing my DSLRs are better at, hitting peak action with fast subjects. In the same vein, what it the relative blackout time compared to Z6/7. If a lot shorter, this could be my action camera.
Ricci, curious that if the AF is greatly improved over the Z50, is rolling shutter and banding in ES also improved over the Z50 as well? I also hope Nikon puts our a FF version. Thanks for the great channel and info, Ricci. You're most people's number one go-to channel for balanced and interesting reviews. Cheers, Eric
Oh, I really like to buy one. It reminds me my first camera a Nikon FG which I still use after 40 years, also kept a Nikon Df also due to the style. Really regret switching to Sony before Nikon Z came out.
Thanks for a really detailed video about this extremely attractive camera. I wish they'd followed Fuji's example and put an Auto setting (or three) on the ISO dial. There are some days one doesn't want to think about it. I have the Z 50, so I wonder if there is much point in my buying this one as well. Like you, I would be very interested in a full-frame version, because that would give me a more balanced kit. I adore the Z 50 and assume the image quality is the same and that the bump in AF is mostly software-based and could one day be given to the Z 50, next time Nikon is feeling generous.
Very good test. What do you think about single focus? Sometimes the best focus cameras still have the same problem, some pictures are not sharp. Happen the same with this model?
Agree 100% with you and the other comments. If Nikon do produce the FX version it will be the first of it's kind from any manufacturer - unique and very popular. People want full frame and minimalist, classic design which only Leica make right now. I would buy one straight away.
Hello Ricci. THX. My proposition: Vision of using this camera for photography in low light, in various lengths and geographic latitudes, for example in Poland we have fewer sunny days and different light?
In video mode, how is the rolling shutter and is there a lot of inconsistent hunting when focusing on an object or is the focusing equivalent when in photo mode? Thanks, great review.
Great video as always, but I wonder if using the shutter speed to buffer light (instead of an ND) helps the camera with AF -- I know some other APSC mirrorless (fuji) see this difference.
Will be a compact dream combo with the 18-140 when it will be available in September 2021. Despite that marvelous Retro-design, I question if it will handle differently as a Z50 when this got the same software update as the Z fc.
It's a very nice camera. I was conteplating getting a Z 50 as my vacation camera and for occasional street photography but if the autofocus really is so much better and it has USB-C, then this is the one I should think about especially since the price isn't much higher than the Z 50 (at least in the Czech Republic). So, I would really like you to test the autofocus in comparison with the first generation of the Z bodies (Z 50 is a pretty obvious choice but since I have two Z 6s, I would also appreciate comparing the Z fc to that). I'm also curious about the battery life compared to the Z 50 but the fact that it can be powered from the USB-C when used is already good news.
I like it very much! It will probably appeal to many people with this design and improved autofocus, though I´m waiting for something a bit more sturdy and faster. A baby Z9 (Z8 perhaps?)
Hello Ricci, What a great look camera, Its shaw look like its pack with lots of interesting stuff(IT word) it defiantly not an entry level camera. I think it should be a great success for Nikon. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy life. Just to add one though with the auto focus and eye tracing? With the fact that the senior is 20.9mb? there are a lot les focusing points for the camera system to manage? So there for it can look to work considerably quicker. Whit 20.9mb? should be good for 80% of users.
Looks awesome. I was never inspired by the awkward retroness of the Df, but an APS-C mirrorless version seems to hit the sweet spot. I do wonder if they'll release a full-frame version for higher-end enthusiasts.
Hey Ricci, fantastic review btw! I know this camera lacks full IBIS, but there is some stabilisation - can you elaborate on this? All being well, it looks like I will be retiring my D7200 and pairing this with my FE2. Good times...
Fully articulated screen, finally! I will happily upgrade to a new model if Nikon gives us a good FX camera with that screen, will be super helpful in Astro shots with low camera positions!
yes I'd buy a Full frame version of this with the flippy out screen That was I can use it as serious photo camera, and my g/f can use it for her vlogging And it would have access to all the Z mount lenses
Sorry if I was misundertood. I have an APS-C camera now, a Nikon D5500. I only bought it because as retired person I could not afford full frame. I like the idea of the lens focal lengths that I was brought up on when I was younger and had a Nikon ELW. eg 50mm is normal eye view, 24 or 28 is wide angle, 105 is a great portrait length and 200 is telephoto and 600 for birds etc. With my APS-C camera I have to mentally translate my lenses back to FF. And I was also noting the fact that as a "photographer" I have different needs (I like a big camera in my hands) to my girlfried who wants a vlogging camera (smaller and lighter with a flippy out screen)
Great review, thank you! The firmware BETTER make it to the Z50 ASAP. The other reason the 3x3 is better is because it doesn't block the center area for checking focus! The flippy screen should have been on the Z50! I'd still chose the Z50 over this paper weight for the flash and critical front function button alone. The dials don't solve any problems I've had changing settings with a Z. Also needs to share the EN-EL15 (which has aftermarket options) with the other Z's. Nikon needs to bring back the multi-function AF/M button/switch. They also need to integrate arca-swiss bevels into the body so that you don't need an bracket or L bracket. Nikon also needs an updated led lighting system for the Z's. Not only that, but the Z50 looks more compact, and less likely to get dirt/dust/moisture in those dials. Can't wait for the compact lens reviews! As far as autofocus goes AF-C is nervous on Z's. Getting better slowly.
A comparison with the DF would be great fun. The handling and usability would be a complete slam-dunk for the Zfc of course, but the comparison of the old DF full frame 16Mb Raws vs the modern 20Mb DX Raws would be fascinating.
It isn’t a D6 or Z9 level camera yes. But maybe with the Z6II AF internals. This ZFc with a good lens would make a great little wildlife kit for us non pro shooters. I would love to see you test that out.
Ricci, my Zfc/16-50mm kit arrives Monday and I have a few Z lenses as well. I'll use it as lightweight city/walk around and my kids will borrow it I'm sure. What do you think about the Z DX 50-250mm lens. It's reasonably priced and curious if I should add it for this camera? Don't want to put large Z FF lenses on this as I have the Z7ii if I'm going to use those.
Thanks for your video. I use Z50 for bird photography. Do you think the new Zfc ergonomics could be suited for bird photography and big lenses like 70-200z?

I can't agree with you more on the full-frame!! I would also like to mention that I will prefer that I can use the same battery as other Z series. Thanks for the video. The most in-depth one that I can find. Just ordered mine. I will use it with my Z7II
Awesome video ! I was kinda disappointed at first with the reveal but after watching your detailed analysis im kinda liking this camera. I'm on the verge of switching to mirrorless so would love to see a Zfc - Z6ii comparison. Thanks for the great video !
Will do that comparison thanks for watching!
I've got and worked with an FE2 and can't wait for this beuty!
so helpful.... preordered earlier but this sealed the deal. your videos are brilliant. (you also helped me with my decision to buy the z6ii- so good). thank you.
This camera looks amazing! I would love to see both a comparison against the Z50 and the Z6 II
Not zfc or z50 are in the same league as the z6ii, the z6ii is a phenomenal camera and full frame…. Like bringing a knife to a gunfight
The Zfc is the z50 in a retro package.
Best review Ricci. Looks good, my camera is D850, but would consider this. Please compare with Fuji...
Absolutely beautiful camera, not practical for me personally, but I love it. I hope they Throw that tilty screen on full frame cameras >.>
Thanks Ricci. Very interesting. I would also love to see a full frame version.
Where is the IBIS? Nikon Z Mount lenses doesn’t have a VR.
@@angeloregina Nikon didn't release a DX cropped sensor with IBIS yet ( I believe neither Canon does) ... most of the dx lenses have VR unlike the full frame lenses which usually don't... as if Nikon doesn't want people to use FX lenses on DX bodies
Nikon, please develop some retro look compact DX VR prime lenses. 14mm DX VR, 18mm DX VR and 35mm DX VR. Camera looks beautiful. 😍
And the FF compact primes don't get VR ... oh well...
@@mneedes2 Good point but we can hope. If the Zfc sells well, it might happen (those DX VR compact retro primes). 😆
Wait for the Viltrox F1.4 DX primes
Informative and very helpful, especially the AF information. Thanks very much
Really informative video and impressive AF performance from an attractive design. I hope the Z fc will sell well for Nikon. Not a priority for most but as a retro enthusiast, I would enjoy seeing coverage of the manual focus assist functions, focus peaking etc, when using adapted manual lenses, vintage or new.
That camera body looks really neat! How about the Nikkor z DX 50 - 250 mm? Could you test it with the Zfc?
It’s the same with z50
Looks great. I wish it had IBIS and shutter speed of 1/8000. Great to see 3 by 3 framing and wide-area Auto focus. Looking forward to comparison to Z50 and Z6 II
Missing IBIS is big problem for Nikon as most Z lenses doesn’t have VR.
A great view Ricci.
Ive got a Nikon D5500 and looking to go mirrorless - full frame is out of my price bracket.
Hi Ricci, Thank you very much for this useful info. Appreciate your effort to put all these thing up for good use.
Thank you!
I would be very interested to see you make a comparison video between the Zfc and the Z5
Thanks again, Craig
really trying to get a 28mm as soon as I can
Have been shooting Canon for 2 decades but this little camera really peaked my interest. Perfect weekend camera or for small family trips, It has eye auto focus and priced better than a Fuji. I just wish the 28mm lens would have an aperture ring. Any case I might just pick one up for fun and play with it for a few months. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for the first look & impressions. I hope they make a retro-style full-frame version of the Z fc. My D500 covers my APS-C slot very well.
Hello! Thank you for a good introduction to what I considered a wonderful Nikon piece, I'll be following whatever else you come up with about this camera, I'm certainly planning to get it. How about telling us more about lenses for it ???
Could you talk more on The selected dials on the Z FC camera ISO,
etc and why you select certain dials to get the right picture?
I like, I want one, and that 28mm 2.8. I would sell my Z50 for this. I would also like to see a FF Zf as well.
I would be interested in a full-frame camera with a similar style. Really love the look.
Bought mine yesterday with the 28mm se lens , and love the feel and looks
I do not necessarily want retro design."
I wonder if this might appear in a higher-end version, maybe with full-frame! I too like the top LCD.
"Just give me a DoF scale on the back display when I need it."
You'd think modern cameras would be perfect for this, but no.
Yes for sure I'd love a full frame version!
Great intro video, I'm all in...I miss my retro F, F1, F2 film cameras and the way they felt in my hands...thanks so much
Works with Nikon flashes fine SB-400 ect
Your videos get better with each one, Ricci.
Thanks a lot Darrell I hope you are keeping well
Gorgeous camera. Bravo Nikon.
Great video as always. Please add a comparison vs z6ii in terms of autofocus. Thanks.
Simply beautiful camera… ❤️❤️
Hello Ricci. THX. My proposition: Vision of using this camera for photography in low light, in various lengths and geographic latitudes, for example in Poland we have fewer sunny days and different light?
Thanks for this very informative video. I wondered if you could compare it (autofocus mainly) to the z50 and z7ii. Thanks a lot!
One thing I think is too bad is that there's no physical remote shutter (as far as I can tell). That would have been a nice touch!
Hey Ricci, fantastic review btw! I know this camera lacks full IBIS, but there is some stabilisation - can you elaborate on this?
All being well, it looks like I will be retiring my D7200 and pairing this with my FE2. Good times...
Fully articulated screen, finally! I will happily upgrade to a new model if Nikon gives us a good FX camera with that screen, will be super helpful in Astro shots with low camera positions!
yes I'd buy a Full frame version of this with the flippy out screen
That was I can use it as serious photo camera, and my g/f can use it for her vlogging
And it would have access to all the Z mount lenses
@@Digmen1 Why is an APS-C camera not serious?
Nikon in 2030 will introduce a FX mirrorless with fully articulated screen.
thanks ricci, really in-depth and useful review compared to other previews
Thanks a lot !
Good point about the flash .... the Z50 flash is great for fills
Looks like direct competitor to fuji cameras. I hope nikon does not abandon this line like they did with the V1.
A comparison with the DF would be great fun. The handling and usability would be a complete slam-dunk for the Zfc of course, but the comparison of the old DF full frame 16Mb Raws vs the modern 20Mb DX Raws would be fascinating.
Great presentation. Just pre-ordered one!
Got mine last weekend, handled well very happy, unfortunately couldn’t get my images on my Mac because Lightroom doesn’t support the zfc
Thanks Ricci! Accurate and clear as always!
How will You compare it's performance with the Z5?
Certainly
It isn’t a D6 or Z9 level camera yes. But maybe with the Z6II AF internals. This ZFc with a good lens would make a great little wildlife kit for us non pro shooters. I would love to see you test that out.
Awesome review and I love your work here. G
I'm glad I discovered your channel, really like your review, thanks
Ricci, my Zfc/16-50mm kit arrives Monday and I have a few Z lenses as well. I'll use it as lightweight city/walk around and my kids will borrow it I'm sure. What do you think about the Z DX 50-250mm lens. It's reasonably priced and curious if I should add it for this camera? Don't want to put large Z FF lenses on this as I have the Z7ii if I'm going to use those.
Thanks for your video. I use Z50 for bird photography. Do you think the new Zfc ergonomics could be suited for bird photography and big lenses like 70-200z?
