  • My social media feeds are filled with women getting every kind of injection filler, and surgery to alter appearances. What was once a secretive and less talked about phenomenon is becoming increasingly popular and normalized in our generation. Is social media to blame for this rise in plastic surgery?

As a 25 year-old, I am only now starting to feel confident in my body. I’m finally starting to leave the awkward young-adult phase where I didn’t feel quite like I fit into my body. Social media absolutely is feeding into this and it’s so sad, especially when a lot of the women who have plastic surgery ALSO USE FILTERS AND PHOTOSHOP. And it’s lazy. Don’t like the size of your butt? Instead of working on yourself either mentally or physically like going to the gym and building muscle, they jump into surgery.

I am a 6' 5" guy and have never understood why people want to be tall. Once you get so tall it becomes incredibly difficult to find clothing that fits (clothing companies assume everyone just gets wider not taller), you deal with constant neck and back pain from having to look down at everything and people CONSTANTLY staring at you. I don't wish to be shorter cause this is how I was made to be. When it comes to looks people need to accept who they are and stop changing their image to please others.

The grossest part to me is that people have shamed me for saying that it's not good for your mental health to get cosmetic procedures like this done, that's how deep the brainwashing has gotten. I always hear the argument that it's empowering for women to fix their insecurities, but that in and of itself is such an insecure perspective. The empowering thing to do would be to accept your flaws and love yourself anyway. Unless in the case of some sort of disfigurement, I don't think people should be getting any plastic surgery done to themselves. It not only affects their own self perception, but it also affects the self perception of others, especially young girls.
I appreciate you talking about this topic. I always see a lot of young female viewers in your comment section, and they really need to hear what you're saying. From a 26 year old woman, it does get better! We all hated our bodies growing up, it is perfectly normal and you don't need to change your body to be beautiful.

On day, big lips are gross, than the day after everybody wants big lips. Straight hairs one day, curvy hair the next. It's changing everyday. So what are you gonna do ? Make plastic surgeries for the rest of your life, because you'll still hate yourself later since the trends will be changing and you'll need to change again, or will you finally try to love yourself and not suffer for the rest of your live ? I had a relatively large nose for my face when I was in middle school. I was always insecure about it, even in high school. I'm 26 now and I love my nose. It's strong, unique, and it fits my face. I feel a sense of resonance with it because it's mine and only mine. The saddest part about plastic surgery is that it standardizes the look of humanity. It literally mitigates what makes you look like you. There's something inherently spiritual about the faces and body types we are born into. It's like they are symbolic of who we are. And yet some people call altering (and often harming) them self-love. It's ass-backwards.

There is a really strong correlation between snapchat filters/filters in general with young women. It isn't surprising if you think about it though. I had a 7 1/2 cm lengthening so I wouldn't have a permanent limp, and it was a year long process. Not to mention, the most excruciating pain I ever endured. The one thing that is nice about it is that I'm generally pretty curvy, at least as of right now, and my chest and stomach look about even. I went to high school with girls who got plastic surgery and fillers. The filler girl told me she gets her lips done once a week. I found this out during graduation but she could've been getting them at an earlier age for all I know. The girl who got plastic surgery got a rhinoplasty when she was 16. I understand getting this kind of surgery because of a deviated septum or other medical issues, but I'm convinced that it was pure self-consciousness and vanity that caused her to change her nose forever.

Thank you so much for talking about this, and thank you for not getting a nose job! The more people get nose jobs the more a regular nose looks “too big” or “weirdly shaped”, and then people with larger noses look even more “different” and the insecurities just never end 🙄🤦‍♀️noses of all shapes and sizes are beautiful!! Same goes for all the other features and procedures. And if everyone gets plastic surgery everyone just looks identical, and that would be truly disgusting 😳 Variety is beautiful, individuality is beautiful! We as a culture seem to support that idea when it comes to skin tones(as we should) so why not all other natural features???

Hi a 23 old boy here , who is kinda in the same situation, I am good at academics and I always thought subjective beauty is superior; but I quickly realized that the world really doesn’t care about your personality. I would not say that you make it your insecurity but rather work on your insecurities. Remember nice personality traits are very hard to come by they are very hard to cultivate. But when you work on yourself and you have the objective beauty; the world becomes even more easier. Work on yourself and remember even though you’re 13, you having the sense of what is wrong and what kills your confidence is the fact that you’re much more mature than others kids who are playing with barbiedolls and video games. Just use your energy wisely to cultivate your emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made, truly. I feel more like myself, more confident, and oddly enough I feel like once I had it done I actually started “living” - if that makes sense. I was crippled by judgement and embarrassment, and facial dysmorphia. I always feared meeting new people or potential romantic relationships. Honestly it changed more than people realize - sometimes a surgery is more than just a cosmetic thing. That’s my own perspective on it, however. Everyone’s entitled to their opinions 🖤

My take on plastic surgery: get it only if it’s needed. If you’re just insecure about something, save your money. But there are a couple where PS is a good idea.
First one is after a serious injury. A couple years ago, Wendy from the K-pop girl group Red Velvet tripped and fell off a stage. As a result of the fall, she had a lot of facial injuries. She had PS to restore her face to what it was before the accident.
The other scenario is chest size for women. I don’t support enlarging your breasts to appeal to the male gaze-studies have actually found that men who prefer larger breasts tend to be less successful than men who prefer smaller breasts or men who don’t care about breast size in a partner. But I do support breast reduction. I have a friend who got a breast reduction in her sophomore year of HS. She was never outwardly insecure about her chest size, but after she had them reduced, I noticed that she was standing up straighter. A lot of women have back problems because their breasts are so large, so for those women, I would say that a breast reduction would be a good idea for them.
Then there’s the things that are very preventable, and this is targeting specifically Botox. If you take care of your skin, you won’t have to worry about wrinkles. Skin care is less expensive and far less dangerous than BOTULINUM TOXIN.
At the end of the day, people are free to do what they want with their bodies. Just make sure that if you do get cosmetic surgery done that it’s for the right reasons.

I've had a breast reduction and it changed my life positively, saved my back but also gave me more self-confidence. I have other insecurities but I don't see myself going under the knife for these. Some can be changed, through exercise for example, if I want to lose weight or have a bigger butt, some just have to be accepted, like facial features. Your face is how people recognize you, change it, and it's like you're not you anymore

I was born with a deformed nose (I mean I literally couldn't breathe from my nose) the doctors wanted to do a surgical procedure but my parents declined.
I do need to do a nose job but... right now (17) I believe it's better to finish my growing phase which I think is until 22, maybe then I'll feel comfortable enough to spend my money on a nose job that may harm me more than I am now...
I was told and explained what surgical procedures are since I was 14 years old by my good parents ❤
Also if anybody cares: I'm starting to workout so I'll look a little better and after the military I'm planning to find a good-paying job, then find a wife and raise my kids the correct way (no internet until 13 or at least 11 depending if the 100 genders and body fatness bulshit will be out of the media...)

I asked to get this surgery when I was 12 years old in the 90s my father giggled and said you don’t want to do that to your body. Fast forward years later I have a beautiful career as a pro performer. If he let me do what I felt back then my life would be horribly different.

The idea of leg lengthening surgery makes me shudder inside. My husband is the same height as me, 5’7”, and he joked about getting that surgery but I’d never want him to do it. Messing with heathy bone and muscle, putting in metal rods and screws near major nerves and arteries, months of pain and physical therapy, for what? People need to stop being weird about shorter guys and they need to stop being weird about themselves.
Edit: you’re reading about the risks now. I need to watch further before I comment 😂

As someone who has broken my left femur once, my right femur twice, and my right tibia, and now have rods in all three I cannot fathom doing this purposefully. It honestly seems like this guy is having a mental health crisis because no one in their right mind could do this to themselves.

I’m 33 and I have disliked my nose since forever, I wouldn’t mind fixing it but I’m also ok with living with it. I think it’s important to wait a few years before making a lifelong decision, because as you mature you also realize some things are more important than others and you also accept yourself and your body more. Even at 22 my brain was still not developed I didn’t start liking myself until I was 25/26.

My goal is to be a hot and healthy 90 year old who looks natural, not a plastic filled elderly person who maybe have horific side effects. Why dont people want to age naturally. Focus on exercise, skincare routine, sunscreen and eating healthier.

I literally have a young friend who believes he’s worthless bc he’s 5’2 and is desperate to end his life due to body dysmorphia. He refuses to get psychiatric help bc then his parents will know he’s struggling and doesn’t want to be seen as the “mentally unwell kid” and feels everyone else looks normal. He says he’s skinny and and looks like a freak. It breaks my heart. TW: He’s tried to h@ng himself multiple times. So, since he refuses to get help, lives in a 3rd world country and can only afford hair removal which is literally $5. He can’t afford creatine, he doesn’t wanna ask his parent for money bc they’d know. He turns 20 today. He doesn’t wanna get older, he doesn’t even enjoy his bday. He gets comments about his appearance and literally sees comments on Reddit that say 5’2 men should “k!ll themselves” bc life can’t be good as a 5’2 guy. This is what our young people are being told and it is FALSE! I used to be in love with a 5’2 guy! And what’s crazy is that bc of his confidence and presence, I literally thought he was taller than me. 🤦‍♀️🤣 But that confidence is HOT. Embrace yourselves, people. I’m not here to judge bc I’ve wanted to change things too. But I definitely believe men feel they can’t talk about this stuff and it breaks my friggin heart. Go easy on folks. Go easier on yourself. People can be stupid, please ignore them. I know it’s easier said than done but just please realize they’re vain and ignorant. Love you!

I had a breast reduction at 16yrs old fully covered by insurance because the shear weight of my breasts were causing discs in my back and neck to be pulled out of place. Even though it was deemed medically necessary i wish i had NEVER done it. My body was still growing and I never should have done it. Now as a mother I am unable to breast feed my babies and have to depend on milk donations and buying it and formula. I have ghastly looking scars that made me feel like i had to had sex with a shirt on because my partner would see them and be disgusted. Its taken me YEARS to finally be ok (still not fully comfortable) with the scars.
My body was perfect the way it was and with time i would have grown into myself both mentally and physically.
PLEASE think real hard before you alter your body in anyway.
YOU ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE!

There was one that was advertising how they had a discounts? And now when I watch youtube videos I see these ads. It's so disturbing.

My manager in my last job was addicted to having botox, lip fillers etc etc. When she started at the firm she looked okay, despite the work she'd had done. She had a bit of a Sandra Bullock look about her. However, I saw her recently and after two years, and far too much work done. She looks like she's been on a roller coaster with huge drops that pinned her face back and it stayed that way!! Her lips are now so big that she can't articulate words properly. She's totally ruined herself.

As a guy who’s 5’7” and gets overlooked just because of my height, I don’t blame that dude for wanting to be taller. I’d never do it myself, but girls who are over 5’2”ish will often pass just due to height. I get having a preference, but these same girls will chastise a guy for not dating someone overweight. The double standards of Gen Z and millennials is astounding.
