    Despite its affinity for front-wheel drive cars, especially in its legendary 99 and 900 badges, Swedish automaker Saab still managed to sell one of its properly cool cars as a wagon with all-wheel drive. The 9-2X Aero. But here’s the thing: It wasn’t a true Saab, but a mashup of GM DNA mixed with Subaru. And, it was entirely built by Subaru, too. But let’s take a step back and try to get an idea of where it all started. When did Saab start slipping away? What did platform sharing and badge engineering mean for its legacy and survival? What happened at the end? And finally, will we ever see some form of Saab ever again? Today, on Past Gas: it’s the final part of our two-part series on Saab.

    This was great. I wish you guys would have covered the 9-3 Viggen, 9-3 Turbo X, 9-4x (Cadillac cross breed), and at least one 9-5. Like the first episode, it could have been boiled down to about 15-20 minutes of content actually related to Saab though, lots of off topic stuff again. But thanks for covering the dead brand that I've loved for 25 years.

    • @powertothesheeple5422
      @powertothesheeple5422 2 месяца назад +2

      Agreed. Most people think the only AWD SAAB made was the 92x, yet the Turbo X is ten times the car and would spank the pants off it. And include the NG 9-5 Aero and even the wagon outside the US - that wagon was beautiful.

      This was pretty much just "reading a wiki about a brand". None of them seem to have any actual experience with a Saab.

    • @chieftron
      @chieftron Месяц назад +1

      @@esaedvik Considering the 9-4x only 673 were made, makes it more rare than a lot of Ferrari's and Lambo's, definitely an awesome talking point that could have been had. Not only that, but the 9-4x is absolutely stunning, even to this day. I'd still love to own a black one.

    Great episodes on SAAB thank you.
    I have a love for SAAB and alot of memories with SAAB. My mom and stepdad brought me along for a SAAB club cruise where i expirenced speed for the first time, i was 10 or 11 at the time and we saw a really nice cobalt blue 9000 that had a 2.4 litre with turbo going 0 - 200 (kph) in somthing like 9 seconds and the sound of it flying by us was incredible and i think its one of the reasons i became a car guy. Also my dad taught me how to drive in his 900, when I was 13 so I guess im a SAAB guy. I would love to have my own 900 or 9000 turbo and my mom still drives a 9000 and as far as i can remember she has had 3 or 4 of them, both with and without turbo. Great cars.

    There were some that got missed out. The Saab Sonett, the Saab 9-4x, and the Saab 90. The Sonett being the most important out of them as it was their take of a sports car.
    Also, the engine in the 9000s are some of the most tuned engines in the Saab industry because the T5 2,0 and 2.3 can handle the tuning. My dad has an old -95 900 with the 2.0T T5. The old owner tuned it up to 300 with just a few upgrades with the majority being stock

    Drive a Saab 9-7x 5.3 almost daily... It's a Beast! GM told the Saab engineers to have at it with the platform and they Delivered in Saab style. 200+ pounds of sound deadening, Huge sway-bars, rear-air suspension. The 9-7x Aero was the second most expensive vehicle GM was selling at the time behind the Cadillac Escalade.

    24:00 Saab is IMO one of the most approachable brands there are. Tons of parts available and moderately easy to maintain. I had four and they almost never had anything go wrong (that wasn't my own fault) and I mostly drove them during winters. One had over 300k miles on it when I sold it. Most had nearly 200k miles. Pretty much a break-in for a well-maintained Saab.
    Saab 9-3 used to be pretty popular in local standing mile top speed competitions as they could hit 300kph+ on airfields like /watch?v=qW-z__-OcOw hitting 313km/h (194.5mph)
    2.0L 4 cylinder on boost only. No nitrous, on gasoline.
    Few 9000's too like: /watch?v=vCLk33ncBMs

    Nolan should defently buy a Saab 9000. I was a Volvo guy for almost a decade, drove manily 740's. Honeslty i got sick of the Volvos so one day i bought a rusty Saab 9000 just to try it out. It's the perfect car. Relaible, looks good, easy to work on and tons of room if you buy the hatchback. The best thing is the engine, with a simple tune it gets fast as f*ck, and if you buy one with the t5 engine you can delete the blowoff valve and add a dosepipe to the airfilter and get that awsome stutututut sound!
    I'm on my third 9000, It's a mint -98 with low milage. I plan to drive it to the wheels falls of, and usually i don't keep cars a long time. Those i like stays about a year.
    NOLAN NEEDS ONE!!
    You guys aleast have to testdrive one, you will be suprised how much they have to offer compered to a modernish car.

    I disagree that you shouldn't buy a Saab unless you're a fanboy. One of my favorite cars that I've owned was a 900SE Turbo 1996 with 290k miles. $800. Alternator died at around 315k and being an idiot I sold it at the time (could've replaced alternator and got another 10k miles I'm sure).

    Note...We actually did get the Alfa 164 in the U.S.; the only Type 4 cars we got here was that and the 9000. The 164 was sold here from 1991 to 1995 (when Alfa left the U.S. that first time, now they're back, lol); it had a SOHC V6, later a DOHC V6, both 3 liters, and the U.S. model had a manual as the standard tranny 😁
    Plus, whereas the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma and Lancia Thema was designed by Giugiaro, the 164 was designed by Pininfarina.
