SGBOH is one of my all-time favorite systems, it is so good and so flexible. Major kudos to developer Alan Ray for his dedicated efforts. Thanks for this video, Wayne.
@@WayneHansen it is, although I was a bit disappointed when I couldn't find a smaller battle on the "Samurai" game. If I have time I might do some research and cook up something manageable.
Excellent Wayne. I'm just getting into this game. One experienced player told me the full rule set is not that much more complicate so just go ahead and go whole hog. I will try both ways.
I'd disagree with that experienced player, but of course, everyone is different. And if you take the time to learn and play the full rule set often, I'd imagine you would become pretty quick and efficient at playing games using it. For me, Simple GBoH is the sweet spot.
Really appreciate this, very informative and concise. Gives me a good idea of the game mechanics. I ordered SQPR bc of this video. Excited for it to come in. ty!
Glad it helped Judd. At the time I made it there weren't really any tutorial vids for SGBoH, so I wanted something out there to help people either learn the system or (like in your case) help them get back into it.
That's awesome GT! I'm a bit of a fanboy when it comes to Simple GBoH and how you can play Ancients battles at a tactical level. Just a fantastic system. Don't let it overwhelm you when you see all the counters and detailed setup. Pick a scenario, take your time to set it up right, become familiar with the units involved, then start pushing counters around and learning the rules. It will all come together.
Thanks for doing this -- takes a lot of work to walk through it; but well worth it as GBOH is an excellent series (my "go-to" tactical ancients) -- however, I have not done much with SGBOH.
Absolutely Robert. I've seen comments from others who have never played any sort of S/GBoH, and are interested, but feel overwhelmed. I'm hoping this will help some of them ease into it and actually give the system a try.
Hi Wayne, nice video. Bal'ric is shorthand for Balearic Skirmisher, I assume the Balearic Islands in the Mediteranean where shepherds and hunters were skilled with slings. I think most of these titles relate to where the troops originate which is a nice way of adding to the feel of the game.
Correct, these were indead troops that were recruted from the Balearic Islands by the Cathaginians. Not every person (in Europe) knows that name. but nearly everybody knows ther ndividual islands, especially the very popular four major islands with German and Brit holiday makers: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.
Great video - one minor point though, I wasn’t entirely sure what elements of play were SGBOH and which were standard GBOH. So I wasn’t entirely sure how SGBOH was making it more simple and by how much. Could do with a comparison which shows how it would be done using GBOH and how it would be done with SGBOH.
Dennis, I love playing it solo. There's no solo mode, but also no hidden information. If you feel comfortable playing block games solitaire, this will be even easier.
I appreciate that Chris. It's much more simple than GBoH rules wise. It's also less fiddly with markers and things like that. Regular GBoH you end up keeping track of more things and end up with extra counters all over the place. I just find SGBoH to be much easier to play, yet you still get the feel and experience of Ancients tactical warfare.
@@WayneHansen Ok thanks for the info I have heard some gamers say that there is not much differance and you dont loose too much with S/GBOH other gamers that you loose and that takes away from the experience Having not play either one i just like to hear thoughts from those who have As for me maybe oneday but too many big systems to learn already this year
@@chrisridley4840 I'd strongly disagree with some of those gamers, but I'm sure you know that by now. I think you gain much more with SGBoH than you lose. But that's just my opinion.
@@chrisridley4840 Shortly (maybe today) I'll be posting a scathing review of Devil Boats (bleh), then I should be receiving the new edition of In Magnificent Style from Worthington so videos will be going up on that soon as well.
Brian, unfortunately I've never played any of the Men of Iron series. I've heard that MoI is easier than regular GBoH, but I'm not sure how it all compares to Simple GBoH. The series definitely have a lot of similarities though.
None of it is on the lighter side, I'll be the first to admit that. There are lots of counters, and there is a solid rules overhead, even with the "simple" GBoH.
I haven't created one, and I don't know of one, unfortunately. During setup pay close attention to the unit designations and all of the different information on each counter.
Setup is part of each scenario. So look in the scenario book and it will give hex locations for each of the Combat units, along with command structure and history of the battle.

Great job, thanks for making this video. I don't comment often but I follow all your videos. You are one of my favorite youtubers.
Wow, thank you! I'm always doing my best to improve and keep putting out quality videos.

It only took me 20 years to get SPQR on the table. Thanks for the video brother.
Hope it was worth the wait. I love this series of games (Great Battles of History).

I'm really glad I could help. I love GBoH, specifically Simple GBoH, and I made this video to help get new players into the system.
Late to the party, but excellent video, Wayne. I wanted to brush up on the rules since I haven't played it in about 18 months. Well done!

Thanks for doing this... I just purchased the new SPQR and Alexander... as well as Simple GBoH module!

Definitely love the unit illustrations and naming conventions. There is a lot of chrome in this game/system.

Thanks for the comment Nigel. Yeah, I don't really play GBoH, so that video may have to be done by someone with more familiarity with the full rules.
I play Commands and Colors, a lot. This is a little more complex. How does it play solo, if at all?

I think "VEE-LITES" are actually pronounced "vel-i-tays" and "Princips" are pronounced "Prin-ci-pays"
Thanks for the correction Jim! I love Roman history, but pronouncing all of those Latin names... uh... I do my best lol
@@WayneHansen I only learned the pronunciations from playing "Total War: Rome" myself :-)
Well done Wayne

Already got SPQR the rules are all over the place. See 2.33, 4.24, 6.66 etc etc..... This seem a bit more Men of Ironish. Cheers Wayne.
Well done! Great introductory video Wayne. I look forward to more with this ruleset. This has filled a gap for sure!
Thank you David! It's a great system, and I just love ancient warfare and history.
They are BALEARIC slingers, from The Balearic Islands.
Good info 👍
Is this game easier or harder to learn than the Men of Iron series?
Brian, unfortunately I've never played any of the Men of Iron series. I've heard that MoI is easier than regular GBoH, but I'm not sure how it all compares to Simple GBoH. The series definitely have a lot of similarities though.
SGBOH>MOI>GBOH
PS: Nice tutorial, I bought SGBOH some time to play shorter battles but I prefer the full rules set. Great system both, though
I bought SPQR, then I bought SGBoH. I still can't figure out how to set the 'king thing up. Either I'm stupid or this game is terminally obtuse.
None of it is on the lighter side, I'll be the first to admit that. There are lots of counters, and there is a solid rules overhead, even with the "simple" GBoH.
@@WayneHansen Is there a guide to how to setup the game?
