This feels like an older game, like something that'd come out in the early 2000s, back when different developers tried different things, before everything in the gaming industry got so homogenized. Both the fact that it's a SP only game, without a COOP component, or a "social live service" thing, but also how the gameplay works. It doesn't ape after other popular games out on the market. It's not an "Aliens"-version XCOM, it's not an FPS, it's not a low-budget RTS. It's literally its own thing, hard to compare to anything else in the gaming landscape today. Ironically, it feels like an old game, and that gives it a breath of fresh air.
Watched a couple play throughs and it actually reminds me of Company of Heroes II, not the vanilla game but the Wikinger mod. Basically your sentry guns are your hmg team and they're one of your greatest assets on the battlefield when placed at correct locations. Your marines are your infantry squads that you use to capture strategic points and can be upgraded with various weapons and perks as the game progresses. And you apc is your basically tiger/pershing ie your mobile strong point that helps you punch through.
I would say it's XCOM 2 (base management/timer), Darkest Dungeon (stress mechanic) and Dawn of War 2 (squad based rts) mixed together. I wish they ported AVP Extinction to PC, that was decent RTS.

At first I was panicking like "where?? WHERE IT'S COMING FROM?" only to realize that it's generated every time you have dots on the radar and they aren't actually closing in, in any manner. I was actually waiting for Mack to review this one because it seems like it could go both ways this game, it could be a horrible flop or a hidden gem. It actually sounds like it's the latter.
That ammo system seems like it needs rethinking.. "can loot everything but it doesnt respawn if you revisit" it would make more sense if you could loot it all, then take more ammo with you from the ship on subsequent missions...
Was on the fence with this one, a little dissapointed you cant individually move the soldiers, but your review has helped, hopefully a few more strategy game gems to come this year
The soldiers move as a group but when you use a special skill e.g. flamer the guy with the flamer will do that action but all movement orders you give are for the entire group and it works very well.
Even as you move as a group it doesn't feel like you'd just control one blob as each of the marines have their own special skills and it can matter where each of them stands and what tasks you order them to do - perhaps blocking another equally important task at that moment, especially when things start to heat up.
This review is 100% the best and accurate. I just finished it and whilst I enjoyed the game, ALL of the things you mentioned happened and could’ve ruined it!
Yes looks amazing! Gonna wait for a discount on the Series x tho. Looks like an awesome couch game on big screen in 4k 👌... but first the price needs to drop a little imo.
Someone just make AVP III already with some proper MP shenanigans again. Imagine that shizzle with all of todays awesome realtime lighting effects ect. Hell a spooky shit yer pants times :)
I love the aliens franchise looks like a decent alien game that takes alot of commitment and trail and error. i cant commit to this game right now with ff 16 coming so il get after and try to play before remnant 2 comes out.
Im someone who can easily have their immersion completely shattered by cringe dialogue. I just cannot move beyond it when characters are quipping and making stupid jokes when they should be terrified and fighting for their lives.
Ive just binched all of them. Alien (79) is fantastic. Aliens has MAJOR problems. The marines are laughable, the dialog is total crinche. Alien 3 does at least take itself seriously. Rescurection is... one of the worst scripts of them all. The guy playing the general is either a seriously crap actor OR trying to be comedic relief where none is needed.
I prefer 4 to 3 to be honest. At least Resurrection didn't kill off Hicks & Newt for zero reason, and is at least entertaining to watch. Aliens is my favourite, a practically perfect example of sci-fi movies, action movies, and also how to write a sequel.
For me, Ripley's sacrifice at the end of 3 was a good place to stop. The one's that followed were okay but I don't consider them as part of my personal canon. Another example would be the John Wick series: at the end of 2 when he did the "Tell them, tell them all" speech, I felt that was the perfect ending. I still watch - and even enjoyed - some of the other ones, but I just don't consider them essential for my personal canon/collection.

The soldiers move as a group but when you use a special skill e.g. flamer the guy with the flamer will do that action but all movement orders you give are for the entire group and it works very well.
@@WorthABuyreviews That's good to hear, hopefully the devs bring out a few patches to smooth out the rough edges
Even as you move as a group it doesn't feel like you'd just control one blob as each of the marines have their own special skills and it can matter where each of them stands and what tasks you order them to do - perhaps blocking another equally important task at that moment, especially when things start to heat up.
I’m curious how many hours (ballpark) of game time this has.
1 th, Mack how come you did not review D4 ?
Will you be reviewing Battlebit Remastered, Mack?
I guess there's not going to be a Diablo 4 review? I was really looking forward to that one
I don't think he likes diablo
This looks like a good game, and thank you Mac for the review.
I love xcom 2. This looks great 👍
This review is 100% the best and accurate. I just finished it and whilst I enjoyed the game, ALL of the things you mentioned happened and could’ve ruined it!
Nice picking this up today along with FF16.
Thanks for this review, Mack and also for all your hard work in saving others from wasting their money on bad games.
Yes looks amazing! Gonna wait for a discount on the Series x tho. Looks like an awesome couch game on big screen in 4k 👌... but first the price needs to drop a little imo.
Nice Review Mac gonna grab this at weekend. Bonus for it not being a cartoon or xray vision😂 oh no xray vision sneaked in😂
Someone just make AVP III already with some proper MP shenanigans again.
I watched your stream of this, great game, good job Mack.
Im someone who can easily have their immersion completely shattered by cringe dialogue. I just cannot move beyond it when characters are quipping and making stupid jokes when they should be terrified and fighting for their lives.
Really lookin forward to this tomorrow. Hope its not a 6pm release
I like all the alien movies, dunno why you say it went bad after 3. I agree first 3 are the best but it didn't share TERMINATOR faith.
They just get weird and a little extra. Still decent
Alien is great, Aliens is my favourite, 3 and 4 are crap imo
All i needed to know....my body is ready.
