love your sessions Kelvin, each one is like a back to basics audiophile classroom. reminds me of what I used to hope to get from hifi shops when they still existed (when I was a teenager anyway, before I realised that my folks old system sounded better than anything in the shops that I'd managed to hear) (ok - sansui quartz servo deck, hadcock arm, sansui au-919 amp, jbl L40 speakers)
Did not know monitor matched pairs should be set up with the tweeters in-ward! Good thing thats how i always had my setup like, at least with my JBL 4312A's my only monitor matched pair. Glad i dont have to swap those heavy guys! They are my main speakers after all. Great video as always!
Thank you for explaining how the tweeters should be in such speakers. I had this question for a long time because of some Acoustic Research speakers as well as Diatones.
I recently been listening to bookshelf speakers because they don’t take up a lot of space, but I decided to bring out my Pioneer Project 100-A speakers an hook them up an forgot how big an more clean they made my system sound, they are over 43yrs old!!
i like how you think, and in my efforts to have a great speaker i made my own, trying to get all the benefits. i ended up with a 3 way, two small stand mount size speaker, MTM with 3" fullange drivers 2.77 grams of lightweight cone, in fiberglass. small size 1.1" ring radiator soft dome tweeter. then dual stereo 10" aluminium cone subwoofers in separate cabinet. all done with sealed box designs. crossover at ca 200hz and 2000hz.
Hi and thanks for all the good info you give away big thank you love this channel . I have a pair of SPECTRUM ACOUSTICS 410 FLOORSTANDING SPEAKERS 2-way and are mirrored pairs i did not know about the right placement of this until now
You should review the s75 when they are both working , they are actually really great at imaging and sounstaging and the midrange is superb. If you can find the m75 monitor series that is a whole other level. Incredible speakers! Beautiful midrange detail. Dome midranges are now only found in very expensive speakers like atc. I agree about the kef tannoy uni-q style speakers.
I watched another video about Marantz 2238 B receiver. Very good video. I had Marantz 2226 for a while. Exarragated bass, ( boomy), laid back midrange, pretty good highs. Sound is spacious, but not clear enough. Any Arcam amp will outperform Marantz. But Marantz has great faceplate and knobs.
Interesting thoughts about the driver placement within the cabinet. I would have imagined there was no downside to the "point source" of a KEF Uni-q or a Tannoy concentric setup, but I've never heard them, so it's interesting to hear that they don't produce the same spaciousness that off-center drivers do. When I do get the chance to hear a concentric setup I'll be listening for that.
The early uni Q KEF speakers sell for very little money.. Which tells you something tannoy speakers to hold their value very well and I think it’s not suffering from the same problem as the Uni Q let’s say that
First uniq sounded shut in ...and after ferrofluid dried out in tweeters its even more dead sounding, for me the reference series from '70ies and 80 ies with the km1 and p60 k300 are my prefered speakers of kef, and the 104ab amazing still today
I'm now using beovox s45-2, class-d amp made from international rectifier iraudamp7 design, teradak nos dac (8 stacked phillips dac chips, filterless output design, google chromecast audio, ifi ipurifier spdif reclocker, ultra low noise linear powersupply for the cca) it sounds good. All music seems to have new details and instantly recognisable layers and soundstage fastened down with solid deep bass.
Hi thanks a lot for the very informative video I have always had some doubts about 3 ways speakers Some of them come with a cone mid, others with a dome mid I wonder which one would be the best approach Another question related with the 1st is about the optimal cut point between the bass and the mid Taking the human voice range as a reference it can go from 100Hz to 4k ? A crossover point between a woofer and a dome mid at about lets say 700 Hz would cut the human voice range sending the lower range of the voice to the woofer and the higher range to the dome mid ... is this not detrimental for sound quality ? So my conclusioni is that 3 ways with cone mid should sound better Kind regards, gino
Yes crossover design is just a endless subject I’m not sure you can say what is best Personally I like a cone mid range because domes just won’t do snare drums with impact
@@stereoreviewx hi thank you for the very kind and valuable advice Actually most of the so called high end 3 ways sport a cone midrange driver Kind regards Gino
Have you had chance to listen to Visonik Ambassador 120 (made by Heco) or other from that series: 80 / 100 / 150. If yes, what are your thoughts about them? Thank you!
some beovox (s45-2 for example) have what looks like a midrange driver but the output from that driver is intentionally very small - I would warn against assuming a speaker is broken especially if it sounds ok overall. I'm surprised you haven't covered hinge rot and ferrofluid issues - these also need not be unsurmountable problems.
Remember the Dahquist DQ-10? It was a five way speaker... six way if you added the Dahlquist DQ-1 subwoofer. The supertweeter, a really shitty Motorola piezo unit was often disconnected by users as unnecessary. It just added a raspy zing to the otherwise nice highs produced by the German made domes. But apart from that the DQ-10s were (and are) wonderful. Especially if you love pin point imaging, front to back depth and holographic sound staging. Some British reviewers back in the day were critical the DQ-10 because of it's resemblance to their hallowed Quad electrostatic. But properly set up a pair of DQ-10s with the right power and drive and holy shit... they make most of today's speakers sound uninvolving and shut in. Jon Dahlquist's goal in making the DQ-10 was a tribute to the Quad Electrostatic which he very much loved. The DQ-10 was his attempt at making a speaker that sounded very much like the Quad but would go louder, was easier to set up and drive with a much wider listening axis.
@@DethFromAbove1985 The Motorola piezo tweeter rolls off rather gradually so it can be heard further down the treble spectrum. It adds a bite to the sound giving transients extra snap and etch. Not an unreasonable thing as Jon Dahlquist was trying to make a speaker that emulated the speed and sound of a Quad electrostatic The piezo gives this superficial impression but it also adds some coarseness to the treble as well as a synthetic quality due to inherent distortion in the device. When I had DQ10s and I found the treble decidedly smoother when I disconnected the leads to the Piezo tweeter. However some people prefer the extra zing and snap of the piezo. That's fair as it's an easy matter to connect or disconnect it.
Sorry to nitpick, anything that hasn’t been through the scientific method (and is being claimed as science) is by definition “pseudoscience”. There is lots of pseudoscience in the hi-Fi industry.
So people who spend thousands on 1050’s and ‘60’s full range drivers and field coils from the likes of Tannoy and Goodmans or Western Electric are just stupid or don’t know what they’re hearing then LOL?
This guy is as good as Steve Guttenberg. He has lots of experience, and has great insight on audio!
He is better than Steve. Steve just talking, here we have practical tips and advices.
Great to have a audio channel where the viewer doesn’t have to interpret smoke rings - just really clear and practical. Thanks Maurits
I enjoy your videos. New to Hifi. Looks like the videos were a pandemic hobby. Hope your still enjoying your vintage equipment!

Nice explanation especially when you say 'that's just me, my preference.' Until next video!!!... 🇵🇭👍🆗😎🇵🇭
Yes Kelvin, the issue with unicue drivers or coax is about doppler effect....the altec 604 duplex with a horn in the center is avoiding it....

So would u also recommend using 3 way speakers when making or monitoring beats?

Sir can you help me in selecting woofer, midrange and tweeter for a 30watt per channel speaker for my 5.1 amplifier ????
Honestly I don’t think I can I would pick from known combinations that work

According to Shaw from Harbeth a 24x12x12 box has magic.
great video !
Hi! Which models do you recommend of 3 way and 4 way studio monitors(active)?
Gotta say that’s not my department particularly active speakers
Nice review
Loads of drivers = big sound 👍
That is true
Sold my Kefs and my main speakers are Yamaha NS 670 3 ways.
I know a guy who repairs tweeters if you want his info. He’s just repaired my Tannoy tweeter for me out of an early 80’s speaker.
good video man. can you change your microphone please its very painful to my ears dont know why... no offence. good work

Yes those speakers are pretty much the holy grail to me . Not that I’ve ever heard them but I think I have and I bet I’m right.

I have those. Doing a restoration. I doubt I can even hear the top driver. They only kick in at 12000hz or something stratospheric.

3 way, plus sub, plus super tweeter plus a bass transducer on the chair, 6 way....all the way.

i think we only have one eardrum in each ear not three or more eardrums so if we dont need much bass a two way speaker is fine enough.
