  • Paul Dano is bringing The Riddler back to theaters for the first time in over 20 years with The Batman. But in this video, we’re going to take a look back at the last live-action Riddler and talk about how Jim Carrey’s Riddler saved Batman Forever.
The story starts in 1992 with the release of Batman Returns. It turns out that the second Batman movie from Tim Burton caused quite the moral panic. Parents were outraged that such a “violent” PG-13 film could be marketed to children. Warner Bros. took notice and decided to change the direction of the new film.
1994 was quite a year for Jim Carrey. Funny moments were sprinkled all over the three absolute classics he dropped that year. The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective each feature some of the best Jim Carrey moments and absolute funniest Jim Carrey lines. All that success led him directly to Batman.
While Batman Forever (1995) is not considered one of the best Batman movies, it does have some superb Jim Carrey funny moments. We’ll talk about the tension on-set between Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey as well as play the Jim Carrey Interview from Live with Norm MacDonald where he talks about it. And finally were going to go deep into the nuances of Jim Carrey’s Riddler performance and how he prepares for all his comedy roles.

If only there was a simple solution…like age restrictions that could somehow warn us of the content that we could then weigh against our own personal beliefs. The person who wrote the script for the critic kid probably didn't pay attention watching the movie or he thinks that all the kids are pretty dumb. Also I did read the comic based on movie first (it was like a shot for shot retelling of the story) - a lot of things they said in the movie didn't quite translate well to the pages since a lot of the weird and dark stuff was also conveyed with motion, tone of the voice and expressions there.

I feel it just was off the rails after burton was deneid to do more of them , was less the actors fault and purely falls on the studios shoulders for the blame .
Take nolans the dark knight for example , finally the studios learned the fans dont want neon colorful campy dirbble so a 6 year old can play with a happy meal toy .
And harvey dent was portayed in way more fitting to his character even when on screen with a nutjob like the joker .
Didnt feel like 2 villans trying to steal the spotlight more then the other in terms of goofy humor, but was a good flow of the 2 channeling their own pains and downward spirals with each other those being of pain and revenge vs anarchy and insanity to make a force stronger then before seperated.
Why they thought a movie about a kid who see's his parents murderd and vows to spend his whole like stopping murders is a perfect this is for the kids type movie was just moronic .
When a studio and writer take from a set storyline but dont care to keep up its tones or wants of the fan base you get movies like "super marios movie" or the 1st american "godzilla"
It was a sad day for films after that little kid sold out and cried on tv about it too scary , why arnt all movies for kids waaaaah😫
Im not sure if it was hancock or deadpool or kickass that finally turned it around again but thanks to art like those we can be hopefull once again maybe it wont be a 2hr suck fest after the trailers are over.

Rugrats is a cartoon for kids even if Grandpa makes refrences to porn movies and Stue goes through his midlife crisis. • @vysharra
      @vysharra 2 года назад +3

*This.* He elevated the whole movie by having that gravitas but throwing it away most of the time to be the deranged character the setting demanded. It also made Carrey’s crazed energy and Kilmer’s overwrought seriousness feel normal because it meant EVERYONE was giving 150%. There aren’t many people who can keep up with Carrey when he lets loose. But TLJ was right there making Harvey/Two-Face stand out in every scene and really did seem like he was half of the big plan driving the plot. The both of them were giving us Camp x 1000 and actually seemed to be trying to out-Over-Act each other at times. I really liked this version of Harvey who seemingly had no inhibitions as Two-Face rather than purposely choosing to adopt the gimmick out of trauma or whatever. I loved it, I still love it, and I’m glad we got to experience it even if it wasn’t what we’d come to expect from the Burton films.
Also, big kudos to the prop/set designers and wardrobe, they were a big part of what sold the villain acts as believable. The Riddler’s house and Two-Face’s lair were SO FUN to watch over and over and made the Batcave look so much more cool and serious than it could alone (though I always felt that Wayne Manor needed way more of that ‘cluttered, lonely mausoleum’ feeling like Burton’s version started). Seeing the Batcave get destroyed _hurt_ after it looked so damn cool.

It was for this that he apologized, he failed to defend his vision and considered himself guilty. It is easy to find recordings of him walking around the Batman and Robin playground and saying in frustration that they are not shooting a movie in advertising here. Whatever the critics say, Batman Forever has a soft spot in my heart because I watched this movie an ungodly amount of times as a kid cause we had a VHS player but only had this movie (and one other Jean Claude Van Damme film, Nowhere to run) to watch. Watched it too many times I used to be able to recite the whole movie as it played. Good times.

TLJ told JC that he has no respect for him as an actor, because he doesn't believe that what JC does is comedy, just buffoonery, and that what JC does in not acting. TLJ considers himself a very serious actor, and therefore, does not like working with anyone he doesn't consider a real actor. Ironically, the original Mask comic was quite violent, and was toned downed considerably in the film version. It was a smaller press, black and white book published by Dark Horse Comics. While it still had the "looney tunes" styling.. it was the blend with gore that made the book develop a cult following. The gore was erased from the film version.

I would argue Bill Hader has a lot of overlapping talent with Jim Carrey. He doesn't quite have the same ability to rubber face into any impression, but he's a more talented comedy writer and (I would argue) a more rounded actor.
The reason we haven't seen another comedian like Jim Carrey rise to the same level of popularity is because his style of comedy just isn't as popular today as if it was in the 90's

One thing I would like to add because of how you said there was barely any Riddler before Batman Forever, you forgot about Batman the Animated Series Riddler that showed up in 1992. I saw you had a picture of him but didn't really talk about him. The voice actor for him did a great job i think and is what got me into the character of the Riddler whitch made him probably number 3 of batman villans for me behind Joker and Mr. Freeze. So that at that point had me ready for the movie Batman Forever 3 years later when Jim Carey was him and of course enjoyed him in that role also.

Jim Carrey acted like Jim Carrey, meaning he mugged wildly as the Riddler. That's the screenwriter and director's fault for not trying to define any of the characters in Batman Forever. Carrey can be an effective actor as witnessed in movies like The Majestic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and other like movies. However, Carrey also goes full Grinch and Ace Ventura and this is the path he took with the Riddler most likely because the material and direction opted to go full comic book rather than give any of the characters depth.

Batman Forever was one of the best Batman movies. It was an intentional nod at the Adam West series done right. Fast paced, beautiful lighting with great action camera-work and effective use of an excellent soundtrack, peppered with smart nods to other genre films, it came together perfectly like some warped, modern-day Wizard of Oz. It also doesn't outstay its welcome, not being as bloated as the other installments. That said, though, Two-Face was NOT the villain to use for a film like this. Haven't seen The Batman yet, but, so far, my top 3 are '89 Batman with Keaton, Dark Knight with Bale/Ledger, and this one.

I agree that Jim Carrey is probably one of the most amazing things to come out of Hollywood in his era, but I don't think it's really fair to trash Tommy Lee Jones in this one. I would be willing to put forth the argument that Jones giving Two-Face a more serious and stable take really gave a powerful juxtaposition for Carrey's Riddler to shine. Much like Two-Face's own motif, like having the lair that was split down the middle with darkness and light represented on the either side, the Riddler was the other side of the coin for Two-Face. I can't imagine a movie that utilizes both the Riddler and the Joker for example. As for Jones lack of added subtleties and making the role his own, I don't know that Harvey Dent really leaves a whole lot of room for that. Even in the Dark Knight trilogy, one of the more forgettable roles was Harvey Dent, and he was front and center for most of the second movie. I think it's just the nature of putting Harvey Dent on screen with the more amusing antics of characters like the Riddler and Joker that keeps the character from having nearly as much of a chance to shine. Jim Carrey is brilliant, no doubt or debate about that, but without Jones giving exactly the performance that he did, I don't think we'd be able to appreciate Jim Carrey's Riddler nearly as much.

I didnt like Batman Forever when I first saw it because like many others the tonal shift from the first films was just too jarring, but while Id never argue it was a good film even now, having seen it several more times it is definitely one of the most watchable Batman films. I.e. I never go out of my way to see it, but when I do catch it Im never bored.
Its just very hard to take your eyes off the over the top absurdity of it all, with Carey being a highlight of the madness. It kind of captures the feel of many of the silly silver age comics that were ridiculous yet not quite the parody that the 60s Batman show would master.
I will say though that Tommy Lee Jones gets a little to much flack. (Regarding his performance in the film, Im not going to judge if the guy is an arsehole in real life.)
No, he obviously cant compete with Carey, but then I dont think thats necessary or even desired. and while Id love to see a Batman film largely focused on Dent that captures all the nuance of the character* (Though itd have to tread veeery carefully around the mental illness angle of it all.) in this kind of Schumacher film? Its clearly not the best time to dive in to a complex psychoanalysis.
He chews up the scenery, fits in to the madness well, and acts as a pretty good foil for Carey to bounce off, even if he was hating the whole experience behind the scenes.
*I think DC films have a big gap around the not so clearly villainous villains. Harley Quinn has done okay, though probably because the Joker was a bit of a garbage fire I dont think they dug in to her abusive relationship at all as well as they could have. The animated series version of Mr Freeze should absolutely get a film, and while Dent was used well by Nolan I think you could do something much deeper with him. (Maybe even in a style like the recent Joker film.) Though Im not sure if Hollywood is hugely interested in villains that may end in sad contemplation rather than something more bombastic.
