Toki Wait, SERIOUSLY!? Well, guess I can't put it past them. Platinum Games make some great games, and I would not put referencing a classic arcade game past them.
I figure Platinum Games made various hat-tips to Sega's involvement. Collecting halos may be a "Sonic the Hedgehog" reference, like the mention of an "Eggman" certainly was. Heck, there's even a stage clearly meant to allude to "Space Harrier".
Both the Afterburner and Space Harrier moments in were hilarious. Plus I know this stuff was added in by fans or devs of the original games, SEGA hasn't really done much with either outside of keeping them in some arcades, these are like legit levels from those games. I'm always pretty happy when this kind of cross game stuff happens, I love it when I see it. The only other property I've seen that does this is how the Yakuza games tend to have entire emulated games in the Sega arcade areas, and one I think was a dropped tech demo game they had lying around, the geometric shooter in 4. The sheer amount of fun they had sharing their love of games with us, I want more passionate people like this in the industry. No more politics, bring on the fun.

It's really a shame that they gave Bayonette another games soundtrack. It is indeed awesome, BUTT... In retrospect, why couldn't they put the main battle theme from the first game in. Theres fly me the moon and theres another battle theme. In ultimate smash, does she still have Afterburner?
Because how else are they supposed to incorporate a legendary sega song. Packing it in with Bayo is probably the only way AfterBurner is gonna get rep in Smash. I doubt they're gonna add an 80s jet as a fighter

Then it goes to a target retical where the other smash chrs have to avoid controlled missile barrages. Then the pilot parachutes back in but is invincible until he lands incase someone tries to hit him with a cheap shot. But hey, just an idea!
