  • Montrose, CO - Fly fishing in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
    In Episode 3 of the Outdoor Gold Colorado Shred 2020, I'm taking you to my favorite place to fish, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Accessing the East Portal takes you down a very steep paved road where you can reach the river. Don't walk up to the water planning on getting away with murder, its catch and release and the fish are well educated. Be patient and plan on a good day being 8 to 10 fish. In the East Portal you will be primarily catching browns and rainbows.

    Damn dude, I've been watching your MTB videos for awhile but somehow missed that you make Fly Fishing videos too! I'm also a Fly Fishing MTBer and really enjoyed this. Another reason to hit up Colorado!

    In my fly fishing guidebook to the Gunnison Basin, "Fly Fishing the Gunnison Country," I let it be known that the East Portal is my favorite fishery in the Gunnison Valley. This video clearly shows why. Well done!

      The east portal is weird to me, there's been days where the fish are gorging and others where its super tough, I'm sad that we lost it this year. I have to check out your guide book! Sounds like a must buy!

    Fishing?! You have blessed us. This was well done ! For all the years of living in Montrose, I only remember driving up the Black Canyon once. I've seen the sign for East Portal but always thought it was some magical place haha. Great work.

    From the East Portal how far can you hike along the river and fly fish? Have you ever hiked down from the central part of the river and fly fished? If so was the central a better place with bigger fish.

    What chest pack is that? Great video! EP closed this summer apparently.

    • @OutdoorGold

      Its some Umppua chest pack I bought 5 years ago. Its nice for quick access to all the essential for making on the fly ajustments. Pun intended. I was SOOOOO sad EP was closed this year with a slight glimmer of hope it may open in the fall. Fingers crossed. I found it ironic that the two non-mtb videos I made in 2020 are both currently closed between EP and Ice Lake.

    I've only seen it from the top... Need to get down to the bottom, it's SO beautiful!
    Now I need to Google what a "foul-hook" means 🤔

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  3 года назад +1

      Its pretty sweet down on the bottom. A foul hook means I set the hook late, and what happened is the fish took the fly and spit it out, when I saw that on my indicator I set the hook and hooked the fish on the tail.

    Hey, new to colorado and stationed in the springs. I wanted to plan a fishing trip and overnight stay. does the park allow tent camping and catch and cook?

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  2 года назад

      There are campsites in the East Portal as well as on the top of the rim. You can cook, but I think you need to reserve your space in advance. There are some pretty nasty hikes down into the canyon that allow camping, but have regulations in regard to fire use in the wilderness boundary. There are ALOT of bears. ALOT of bears.

    Went there yesterday for the first time caught my best brown trout on the lower, but a fish broke me off what could possibly be my best brown or rainbow on the sand bar only if I landed it.

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  3 года назад +1

      Those break off bring you back though! I was fishing the Colorado near Glenwood Springs 3 years ago and I hooked a 30" brown in the dark. I was about to net it and I asked my friend to turn on his light. This set the fish off and it jumped out of the water. I was shocked at how big it was before it took my drag down river. I was following it down stream and trip over a rock and fell in the water. I lost line tension and it got away. Still eats at me to this day, bringing me back year after year! Good to hear you had a good day in the Black!

    Great videos, but on all of your scenery shots you need to slow the pan, as your frame rate cant keep up. Slowwwwwwly!
