- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced, as part of Canada's 2024 federal budget, that $2.4 billion will go towards Canada's artificial intelligence (AI) capacity in Montreal Sunday.
Trudeau cited access to computational power and capital as two of Canada's largest barriers in developing AI models, revealing $2 billion of the total funding will be used to "provide access to world leading computing capabilities" and help launch a "new AI compute access fund and a new Canadian AI sovereign compute strategy."
On top of that, the Liberal government wants to help companies adopt AI in a way that will have a positive output for all Canadians. To ensure that, Trudeau has promised the $200 million of funding to regional development agencies in agriculture, health care and manufacturing.
One-hundred-million dollars will go towards an AI Assist program to help "small- and medium-sized enterprises scale up and increase productivity by developing and deploying new AI solutions," and $50 million will go towards training creative industry workers who have been impacted negatively by AI, to offer them tools to push forward in their careers.
The announcement follows a slew of other affordability initiatives unveiled by the Liberal government in the past week, ahead of the 2024 federal budget, and as opposition parties slowly gear up for the 2025 national election.

Why is Trudeau smiling as if was his 2.4 billion he just gave away? Poilievre needs to demand Trudeau to prove that he is being accountable to Canadians for every dollar that he spends. First, Trudeau needs to prove that he actually has a policy and a viable business plan that supports this funding. He needs to prove that there are targets and deadlines to be achieved and that quality assurance measures in place. All Canadian businesses need to know this information in order to bolt onto the changes that this funding will introduce to the Canadian economy. The Bank of Canada increased interest rates 20x, starting two years ago to compensate for Trudeau's overspending and Trudeau has not reduced spending. Trudeau needs to show his work and his worth.
I love JT. He is totally NOT going to have a new capital gains tax in the upcoming budget. He is totally NOT going to squeeze every last cents out of the working mans paycheck. Even if he does, it's a burden to decide how to use the money i work hard for it's probably best just to give it all to the government and let them decide what to do with it. It will bring on the "and be happy" part faster anyway.
The government knows the best on how to spend money on important things. That is why I support Trudeau. He crates jobs and prosperity in our country. He has been a great leader and hope he wins the next election. He still has many things that need to get done. Its been one heck of a cleanup in government from the Harper era. Harper left Justin a huge mess that he is still working on fixing. Even Mulroney is to blame considering sold a lab that could manufacture COVID vaccines to a foreign company. The mess from conservatives are taking a lot of effort to clean up but Trudeau is getting it done and doing it well.
