Ayesha, you are a brave and wonderful woman for speaking out the way that you did the other day. Your reach in the curly girl world is immeasurable and you will never know how many people you have helped. A person doesn’t need to be directly affected by this controversy to see the horrific the position that DC has put you in and how much pain you are in right now. It is clear to me that you live your life with integrity and compassion, and I have nothing but admiration for you. I wish you much love, support and health. Stay strong!
I'm so incredibly troubled. I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and she called me a few days ago to tell me how damaged her beautiful long spirals are and it's falling out. She thought it was stress and then yesterday someone pointed out that it could be DEVACURL. We watched many videos together today and the way others have experienced it is exactly what my daughter is going through. I feel terrible for buying this 😫😭
Ayesha, your video made me realize the damage I too was experiencing was due to my dedication to my DevaCurl products for 2 years. Thank you for coming out. I immediately switched my products the moment I saw your video.
Light poo gave me itchy burning irritated scalp and the consistancy turned into a hard gel after a few uses and I hate the chemical smell most products have; with the decadence line my hair fell out and I though maybe I’m putting the conditioner is too close to my scalp? It may me think my hair was so damaged and I really needed a haircut, so I did and continued using deva styling products. My hair looks like I desperately need a haircut again. the ends to mid-shaft look fried and noticed my hair is curling less and frizzier every wash day. I bought Spisha’s bundle based on her gorgeous hair and product recommendations and just thought that these products are just not for me, maybe to much protein for my hair. Devacurl is just not a trust worthy company after all this...the products ain’t cheap and not recalling is even worse. I’ll never trust nor use their products again
It’s upsetting that influencers have to warn us about what is going on, what to look for and/or what to do. This is DEVACURLS job, I’m so sorry this has made you emotional and feel responsible. You are not. I unfortunately was a victim but I figured this out over a year ago, my hair is back to normal finally but I warn every one about devacurl and what chemicals to look for. Again, I’m so sorry love. This breaks my heart that so my influencers & hairstylists feel to blame and they are not
I've been having issues. I still have their products and just learned about it! What. The. Hell!? Been using Deva curl forever and had hair loss/ scalp issues, irritation, bleeding, itches, odor. This isn't your fault. You didn't create the line. Us curly girls gotta stick together.
The way divacurl is handling this is horrific. They need to fix this. I feel bad for all the hairstylists dealing with this as well as all the people that have been affected
Im also a licensed hairstylist and a curl specialist- i swore by this stuff until i started losing all my curl...i had no idea THIS was thr culprit but now it all makes sense...
I respect your honesty! You and curl ninja! Nobody will blame you, its the company. When you kniw better you do better! Now you know. Thank you for speaking up!
I started the curly girl routine about a year ago and ruled out DC. I thought it was just my high porosity color treated hair but it turned into a dry and rope like tumbleweed that started to have breakage. Very drying for me. Thanks for being honest maybe something good will come from your video.
I never used a deva product in my entire life but I was planning to, and instead of feeling relief my heart feels for everyone, especially professionals who trusted devacurl and truly believed it was the absolute best for their clients. I also can't believe how they are ignoring all of this. Nothing. May be the end of their brand.
ziggy I don’t think there is any ‘maybe’ about it. They may have shown some class by coming forward and being honest with all the people who supported them. This sweet-looking girl is near tears. I am fortunate because I never bought it. I’m so sorry for everyone affected.
Kudos to you for speaking out on this. It's been heartbreaking to see so many testimonies from people who have been affected by it. From what I have seen there are a lot of people suffering damage from it. I'm thankful my hair didn't like Deva Curl. I'm saddened to see you so hurt. Keep being honest!❤
I have been using DC products for years. I started using it when Lorraine Massey owned the company. I sought out DC stylists. I, too, trusted the brand. When my hair was falling out in clumps I thought it was everything else. I thought I was going to lose all my hair. I went to doctors. I started taking hormones. I took supplements. I took iron. I conditioned my hair regularly, etc,.etc,etc. Nothing changed. I was a DevaCurl devotee. I NEVER even considered it was the cause, until I stumbled upon Curl Ninja. I stopped using the products 3 months ago. I don't blame any stylists or influencers for pushing DC products. I, too, was just as devoted to the brand as they were. I'm thankful that people have come forward with this issue because I think I would have been in an even worse position if they hadn't. Seriously. Thank you for giving your professional opinion and for being brave. It is appreciated more than you know.
Oh, I feel so bad for you and other stylists who invested so much in Deva products. The brand is awful for not recalling the products! I've been using Deva Curl for over 15 years, almost exclusively. I think something changed in the last couple of years or so. They reformulated the products and I was not getting the same results that I had before, and my hair was looking really dry and damaged. I tried another brand and I felt that it did a much better job of moisturizing my hair. I know that at the very least, the conditioner and the no-poo are different than they were before. The no-poo doesn't cleanse as well and the conditioner is not as moisturizing. Beyond that, I can't pinpoint any major differences, no scalp itching as others reported, etc. But I have had some unusual hair loss. Normally I would not attribute that to hair products, but after seeing so many reports of similar problems, I have to wonder!
@@allyvillanueva3716 Hairstory. They are very expensive (too expensive, really) so I'm still looking for other options. Currently I'm using Burt's Bees baby shampoo (not great), Hairstory New Wash Rich (only as conditioner), Hairstory Hair Balm, and Hairstory Lift (texturizing spray to add body and lift).
Jasmine in my mind It affected my hair differently. It OVER MOISTURIZED my hair. I had wet frizz in the shower that wouldn’t go away and my hair was getting limper. Now I don’t condition regularly and when I do, I condition first and then shampoo which works for my hair. I still use the stylers occasionally, and I LOVED the ultra defining gel. But lately my hair is getting less curly and frizzier, so I just stopped using it this week, although I have no idea which gel to use now. 😣
Sweetie I see how this is truly affected you and I see the real heartbreak this has caused you it’s not your fault babe! My heart hurts for you because this is raw emotions you are sharing with the world and you have worked so hard to build your career I can see how it’s truly hurting you. Thank you for being saw raw and showing real emotions and for taking what you do for a living so important! You are a beautiful young lady and this video speaks volume of your character and what kind of person you are personally and professionally! ❤️😘
this makes me so sad to see you upset:( i posted a video the other day about my experiences with devacurl, and even mentioned you a few times because you’re my hair inspiration, so of course i have been waiting to hear your thoughts. thank you for speaking out, and for honesty because we really need people we can trust since our hair health is so important
I am in the exact same position as you, I’m a stylist in Wyoming and none of my clients are having adverse reactions that are noticeable. But, I’ve lost definition as well as my mom and niece and we have noticed our hair felt rough and “crispy” whenever we used the products. I already also carry AG but I’ve been afraid to say anything to my diehard deva clients because nobody is experiencing this so far. You’re not alone, in your feelings, thanks for being brave and speaking out.
This is nobody’s fault but DevaCurl. I too have experienced damage, scalp issues, and texture relaxing effects from their products, but only really in the last few years. Influencers are not to blame at all. They did not make the product, and they believed in DevaCurl like everyone else. It’s okay girl❤️❤️
Thank you for making this video to make all of our voices louder for DevaCurl to hear! I used their products loyally for over 10 years and I've experienced extensive hair loss and scalp issues from them within the past year. (Stopped using all of their products in September.) I wish they'd speak publicly. Thanks for your sincerity. 💜
Glad you are speaking out about this. Ninja curl was able to return her unused products. Also don't throw away products if you had hair damage bc of the class action lawsuit
Your an amazing person. I just lost all my hair from going to a horrible salon. I had chemical burns on my scalp is was horrible. I spent 4 years growing my hair out just to have it DESTROYED. I’m heart broken. You have the most beautiful hair I’ve ever seen and you give me hope.
In glad you made this video. I had seen curl ninjas video a few weeks ago and realized that deva curl was the culprit in the change in my hair. It was dry and brittle and my scape was sooo dry, itchy and bleeding. Luckily the people at the salon I bought the products at had allowed me to return all my deva curl products. It was well over $200. So now here I am, starting my curly hair journey all over again. How upsetting.
Thank you for speaking out. Even if you haven't experienced severe damage, if you noticed differences, people would like to know. I appreciate what all of the influencers have said.
I’d send it back...with a little letter from a personal injury attorney. I’m sure they’d love to take your case and you’ll be compensated that way. Gather evidence, it’ll be okay, just call a lawyer . Don’t be afraid. Go with Aveda or some other high end line. Don’t worry, you’re a victim, not a perpetrator . Everything will be ok. Let. Your layer handle it, not you. They won’t charge unless they collect...go get your money. And anyone else that’s had challenges, will just add to the Lawsuit.
Ziggy3339 there is already a firm working on a class action suit and there are a ton of individuals working with lawyers. This is going to be an ongoing battle with the company
Ziggy3339 There is a group on Facebook, facebook.com/groups/486634018576633/?ref=share, And They are gathering people’s information and sorting through everything so I would join that and then there will be updates. I believe there’s about 25,000 people in the group right now so there’s definitely a lot of information to sort through.
You are so sweet and sincere. No one would blame you for recommending something your originally enjoyed. The fault is exclusively on the company. They changed their formula and no one knew. It takes awhile to notice changes. They owe you for all that you spent. They need to make it right. Bless you. ❤️
Awwww bless you! I've followed you from the start of my cg journey, I didn't do the whole curly girl method as disability means I struggle to finger comb and I got outed from some groups so I've taken to following you tubers and actually ur in my top 3. I've always found your advice to be use able, something that I could certainly do. Whatever happens, just wanted to Thank you for always being real. 😊
Thank you. Well, I also “invested” in the brand. Only for myself though. But I was so inspired when started CGM, that decided to start with THE one. Well, bad luck happens. I am very happy to have your wonderful videos to follow!
Thank you so much for speaking out and helping to raise awareness. By speaking out, you are helping those who are experiencing damage and saving others from from ever encountering it. You are in no way to blame, this is entirely on the shoulders of Deva Curl. I'm so sorry we've all been hurt by their lack of integrity. Melt Into Moisture is the only Deva product I have ever used. I started using it in 2019, after purchasing it from Ulta. I've been experiencing massive hair loss, I have lost at least 2/3 of my density, and now I have a very dry scalp with areas that appear almost iridescent at my temples. My hair is so thin now that my scalp is visible in many areas and I have nearly bald patches at my temples. Prior to using Devacurl, my hair was very long, very full with beautiful curls, that I only air dried, so I had no heat damage. Now my hair looks like it has severe chemical damage, it is fried, frizzy and extremely tangly with straight brittle straw like ends, and the curl pattern is completely shot. I have had several big cuts trying to remove the damage, but it's all damaged. I spent months trying to figure out if it was due to some kind of medical issue, it wasn't. I never followed the curly girl "no-poo/low-poo" method, so I didn't have any build up on my scalp. The only change in my routine was adding the Deva Curl Melt Into Moisture, biggest mistake ever😢 Thanks again & God Bless 🤗💕
Girl I totally feel your pain! I am also I self employed stylist and a deva cut specialist. This is blindsiding!! I also switch to AG and AG naturals. Luckily I had bought all my product through cosmoprof and was able to exchange everything!! All I can say is you are doing the right thing by talking yo your clients and being upfront and honest. Us stylist are just as shocked as anyone else. Especially since most of us have our own curly journey and found devacurl and thought all our prayers were answered!! It is hurtful and disappointing how deva curl is handling ( or rather NOT handling) the situation. Hang in there and continue to guide your clients in their journey, this is just another step!
Thank you for speaking about this. Even though this is difficult for you on so many levels. Hugs to you, I’m sure we will all get through this somehow. Right now so many of us are floundering with product choices, especially since we don’t know what caused this with DevaCurl, is it a certain ingredient, is it a technique, is it co-washing? What is causing this? We all have so many questions. Will we ever get any answers? Until we do, we do what we can to get healthier hair again. Big hugs to you all who are going through obvious hair loss and damage
Thank you. Your integrity and honesty are evident. It is all making sense for me recently as it is for many others who could not figure out why our beloved DevaCurl was making a disaster of our once beautiful curls. This is a serious issue that DevaCurl needs to address, and, unfortunately, their silence is disappointing.
I have eczema and psoriasis on my scalp, and it has sulfates and lathers, but I use Head & Shoulder Intensive Care, in the dark blue bottle, once a month, and it's my life saver! If you need to switch, or it gets too bad, I highly recommend.
Oh Sweetie, don't be so worked up about this! I fell deep in love with deva curl years ago, all on my own! Although I understand, don't blame yourself! I have advised many of my friends to use deva curl, because I thought it was so great! My hair is destroyed...I slept last night in coconut oil and castor oil...I'm trying it all, and am terrified I'll have to chop my hair off! But the blame goes to deva curl, and what is going on with their products. Not on any stylist! It hurts me to see you so upset!
I have seen some of the girls in the Facebook support group that their hair isn’t even growing back normal. It’s pretty scary to think that a good amount of those affected may never have normal curls or volume again.
It is hard to be on the front lines of a product which is struggling with bad PR, whether earned or not. You did a good job striking a balance. Having said that I do disagree with one comment you made. You stated I’m not a salesperson I don’t like to lie about products. Good sales people have gotten branded with the taint of shady dishonest people. Dishonest people that mislead and cheat in the name of “sales”. In sales your job is to show the facts and let people determine what’s best for them. If you always approach it with truly the customers best interest. I tell my customers that what is best for them is best for me. Even if what I offer is not that best thing. So you work to give sales a good name by being honest like here, giving options and pros/cons then let customer decide. People will appreciate your expertise and your willingness to do what’s best for them and reward you for it. Advice and recommendations is only sales when it is honestly given. Anything else is fraud and misrepresentation and if deva curl is doing that you are not wrong to call them out. But I appreciate the fact that because you don’t know you are just giving facts you know. Keep up the good job. You are better at sales than you realize and should be commended for it.
i literally shaved my head because i thought it was my hair. i started from SCRATCH to come to find out it was devacurl lol i still use low poo and now that my hair is SO short i started deeply feeling the scalp burns. :/ my hair was amazing back in the summer, my mom even would ask if i had curled my hair and i went from that to a shaved head because i started loosing hair and my hair was starting to become stringy and dry. i got so frustrated that i shaved it all off. i love my shaved head but it sucks because i could have still had my hair if i knew about this devacurl controversy beforehand.
I'm so devastated! Idk how I'm going to tell my husband the reason my hair is falling out is the expensive products I insisted on using religiously for the past year! My curls are fried & my hair is gone. I've been doing small cuts & adding clip ins, but now I have so little hair you can see the clip ins & my hair line is gone & so I wont go out without a hat & clip ins. I go to do a big cut this weekend to go your length & a Malibu treatment. I decided to do the curly girl method & followed you & a few others a year ago. I went broke every week buying new DC products. Now I sob when I look in the mirror. No amount of oil treatment will help the dry flakey scalp! I need a wig! I can't even look people in the eyes because of how horrible I feel about myself now. I can't believe this happened!😭💔 I try so hard to take care of myself. Go broke doing it, spend so much time following the rules....I feel like I'm going to vomit every time I see a pic of my hair looking pretty & full & curly. Now the curls that I do have are kinky, wonky & frizzy. 🤮 husband has always been a "Women should have long hair" type guy, that's just what he's attracted to. Now I have to cut it & I'm 41 in March. My hair doesn't grow fast...if it grows back at all. I'm literally bald in the front, down my part, in patches at my Temples, patches all over my head, my entire hairline, not just the front has moved significantly. I had entire locks of hair falling out in the shower, from the root. Then in October my husband forgot salt in the softener & I had a double whammy. Hard Calcium & water deposits from hard water for a month. I haven't bleached my roots since Nov 2019 & now I feel like I look like I'm doing meth! If my friends & fam saw me without a hat & clip in they would think I'm in drugs! I could do a this is what you look like before & after drugs & I didn't even use! I can't look people in the eyes I have No confidence left. I'm sorry I'll stop now, it's just hard, I'm just finding out about the product is my problem! I didn't know what was going on. I changed shampoo & conditioner to Olaplex 3, 4 & 5 cause I though it would help me keep the hair I have left, but I've still been using all the styling products & leave in conditioner still. I can't believe this shit! I'm never gonna hear the end of this! Smh😭😭😭😭
boobelladams Can you just stop using it and not bring it up? New Wash! It saved my curls- it is the only product I use. I even use it as my leave in after I clean. It is a bit of money upfront but it will save you in the long run. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07YPSCMBW/ref=sspa_mw_detail_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1
As a consumer, I've dumped all of my devacurl products. The fact that my own scalp has been itchy since I tried the no poo, coupled with all the credible information that has surfaced left me no choice. I don't have loads of hair to begin with, and am not willing to risk it. In the garbage it all went.
Thank you for saying your two cents. It is really disheartening and sad to see what has happened to some of these people. What's almost equally disturbing to me, is in a facebook group i'm in for curly hair, there are people who have shared videos of some influencers and people who've had negative reactions to DC. And now there's an influx of people posting about how great DC still is and not to believe 'internet hype' and it honestly feels really insensitive and insulting. I had a really bad skin reaction to a DC product and stopped using it really quickly but I consider myself to be one of the lucky people in the grand scheme of things
Its so nice to see how much she cares about her craft and the unfortunate roll she felt she played in all this. She is doing what she can which is using her platform to inform people, that's all she can do. Thanks for the info and the sympathy ♥️♥️♥️
You did fine and thank you for this video. You have done nothing wrong concerning your clients and/or recommending DC products. I also had more than normal hair loss...talking handfuls at each washing, along with dryness and breakage. You are speaking up for all of us. I enjoy your videos and will continue watching. Hugs!
Hey Kristyn, I am glad you put your opinion on here. I am struggling to understand this Deva Curl issue. I am fairly new to the CG method and trying tons of products to find what will work good with my hair. I did have a Devacut about 1 week ago and I SO love that level 1 training such as you have is a wonderful way to help a wavy/curly girl and her hair get to it's full potential. I don't know if it is the just that we need to switch up products every now and again.....? I have also seen on Amazon that some people in the comments say that the formulation must have changed as it is not what it used to be. I will be interested in Devacurl's response.
This is so crazy! This is the first I’ve heard of this. So sorry you and other stylists lose out on a large investment like this. My stylist recently started using Devacurl products and the last 2 times I’ve gone in it took weeks for my curl to get back to normal. I had assumed it was a fluke, but after seeing this video, it makes sense now! Don’t feel bad that you recommended products in good faith. You are doing right by your clients and followers in sharing the truth! 💕💕
Oh my I came to your video just by mistake and I am so glad I did.I used DC a few times because I ordered the travelling pack and my hair looked gorgeous.I am a Ouidad fan and have been using ouidad for over 20 years so I thought I would change for a while so I was about to buy DC and now I came across your video. Now how I was led to your video God knows as I said I was only watching what products you use to have such beautiful hair.Anyways thanks for sharing.
Ive been using Devacurl decadence leave-in conditioner for a couple years now. My hair is very dry n gets snarly n tangly since using devacurl. I may need to get my hair cut because of it. I will try other products as of now.
You are so sweet and your videos are very helpful. Deva products did burn my skin and I did send them all back and was refunded. Since stopping Dev a I have had zero skin problems. This is in no way your fault or Stephanie's fault. You still have great curly knowledge which you will be able to use for all your curly clients going forward.
I used deva for about 9 months. I went through my first batch and reordered and the last 1.5-2months my hair freaked out. It was frizzy and dry when it was wet. I wasn’t even like 1/4 through the product and just threw it away and dint try to get my money back. Looking back my hair definitely thinned although I didn’t have any obvious balding spots. I’m not sure if it’s gotten it’s full thickness back! I’m just glad I stopped when I did. Stylists are absolutely not to blame! Deva is irresponsible and needs to release some information like right now! Good for you for coming out and sharing your story!
It's not your fault, you were just doing your job like all the other Devacurl specialists. It's so hard though realizing it, I'm crying while watching this honestly cause of the damage I also now have after years of trying to grow it out healthy. It sucks, but you're not alone. I'm sure other Devacurl stylists are feeling the same right now.
I'm following you for the denman brush method. It will take practice for me to get the beautiful results you demonstrate. Try to forget the haters, they look for drama because they are so miserable with themselves. Block them from your site!
I'm so glad you and others are speaking up. I am trying to grow my hair out and let it go natural. The only styler from Devacurl I got was the pomade and even that blistered my scalp and caused flakes. It even blistered my forehead where my bangs touched them. Thankfully I saw these videos before I got more of the line and damaged my hair that will already take me forever to grow out. I do feel for you though, wish I could send you a hug
Girl, waiting for new curly girl update from you... Don't stop.. you have inspired me to start wearing my hair natural... Can't wait any longer to see your next video..
After the whole Devacurl scandal I decided to put to the test the other brands that have a “good reputation” like Curlsmith. I put curlsmith in the “thinkdirty” App and guess what? It also came out red. It was no.8 exactly the same as deva curl. So what’s going on? Is it that 8 is not that bad for our hair? Or is it the app that is not to be trusted? Or is curlsmith not as good as we thought? Because I’ve also spent a bunch of money in curlsmith and who’s to tell me that I’m safe using it???? I posted all of these questions in the curlsmith instagram and they deleted my comments and blocked me!
Thank you for posting! I am SO disappointed! Devacurl products made my curls look amazing but luckily I have not had any damage. I have discontinued using the products though because I don't want to possibly damage my hair! So crazy!!! Now I have to start over searching for new products. Frustrating. But I hate that others have to deal with damaged hair from products that claimed to do the opposite.
Thank you so much for your honesty, you are so sweet! I love that you said that you aren't about dragging brands "through the mud". I feel awful about all of this too, since I recommended DC to all my friends and family members, and now I gotta tell them to throw their money in the trash 😞 can you please do a video about what we should do about the DC damage we have aside from a hair cut? Do we take vitamins, special hair masks, scalp repair serums? Your guidance would help all of us a lot!!!
I'm seeing my stylist this week all iv been using for a year is this brand...I hope my hair hasent even effected...I'm going to change to a new brand... I'm so sad this has happened!
I don’t use DevaCurl, but I can relate. I take really good care of my hair, but a relaxer that I had used for years and years made my beautiful hair look frizzy, tangled, and dull. A year and a half later, I finally feel like me again. (And I no longer use strong relaxers on my curls.) But, no stylist would listen to me so I did not have any help. I wish that I had found a stylist like you around that cared and was willing to help me learn what works.
The way a stylist talks about your hair can make such a difference on if you feel comfortable or not. I’m sorry that ended up being your experience. There’s so many ways to do things and listening to who sits in your chair is important. Every stylist can learn new things. Knowledge doesn’t stop in our field. It is forever changing and expanding and so as a stylist you have to be willing to do the same. Sending you love 😊
Hello! I am using the google translator if I hope you understand me. I am from Spain and I use the gel and the foam of devacurl precisely because of a video of you, as I do not understand very well the English I would like you to tell me if these two products are also bad, because they are the only ones that take out my curl, I have Tried the kinky curly with hardly any result, what do you recommend? much encouragement and many kisses 😘😘😘
I’m a hairstylist also, I was using all deva curl products at the beginning of starting the CGM then quickly eliminated all the styling products because they made my hair super dry and stringy. I was told I needed moisture so I bought the melt into moisture mask... it was amazing I loved it I always had such soft hair. Fast forward 6 months I bought my third container, i went through the entire container and not once did my hair feel soft :( I used the entire tub of mask in just 3 washes because I had to put handfuls In my hair. I have also developed scalp issues, huge flakes, bumpy and chunks stuck to my head and hair loss around my hair line even my boyfriend would make comments about the thinning spots in the side of my head (I have A LOT of hair so for someone to notice thinning is alarming) . Now after seeing all these videos I’m glad I don’t have to spend $$$$ on deva curl anymore but I’m back to square one on finding what works for my hair :(
My opinion is everyone has different hair and ive looked at the ingredients. The ingredients aren't that bad ( they arent organic and all natural) but i just don't understand what what would have caused the issues.
There’s a new theory that it might be the packaging and that there could be something with the way it’s stored through distribution that something in the plastic packaging is leaking into the product. There’s a lot of different theories but this one makes sense to me. The curl ninja just came out with a video explaining her thoughts on this theory.
I'm happy I never brought any products from the brand. The Black girl intuition told me this brand wasn't for type 4 hair. But I will continue getting devacuts.
I love how much you care, sweetie. Influencers and stylists absolutely recommend products to their clients and subscribers, but that doesn't make it your fault. YOUR integrity is not in question, put the blame firmly where it belongs - with DEVACURL!
My hair has been getting thin since like last summer but I thought it was maybe my body reacting to my birth control, now I'm wondering if it's these products...
I’m a hairstylist also and recently switched to deva curl because I wanted professional hair care that was curly girl approved. I haven’t noticed any issues with it but I’ve always felt with hair loss because of my pcos for years before I ever switched to curly girl or deva curl. Are you still using deva curl on your hair? Have you noticed any issues with it? Do you know if any other professional products that are truly curly girl approved? I’m not sure what to do. 🥺
Yes! Some ouidad products are approved. Bounce me curl balm from design me is approved. Some Ag hair products are also approved. I think also some of the biolage raw products are approved as well. I’m always looking at brands to see what is and isn’t approved. I don’t think I had hair loss but when I looked back at photos, I didn’t have issues in the beginning but once I replenished products, I could see a difference. When I would style with devacurl alone It looked dry and felt rough. I lacked shine and definition. Then I would do half and half on products and it would be a little better and look a little more defined. Next I have some photos where I strictly use a different brand and the results were better. I never wanted to jump to the conclusion that it was devacurl but when I completely switched to ag my hair was much softer shinier and I had way more definition.
Kristyn Joanne thank you for sharing!! I love Biolage and used it before I decided to go curly girl. So maybe I’ll check into their raw line. And I’ll just have to start reading labels again when I go to state beauty. Thanks for your advice girl. ❤️❤️ I’m a little broken hearted cuz I was really excited about devacurl and getting my curls healthy but I’ve dealt with hormonal hair loss before and it was pretty devastating so I definitely don’t wanna go down that road again.
I do the same thing! Lol or sometimes I’ll try and find the ingredients list online and enter it into curlsbot . Com I completely understand. I was Deva obsessed 2018. It covered my bathroom lol. But, I’ve been to patient and worked too hard to get my hair where it is. Not risking it or anyone else hard work. ❤️
Thank you for keeping your integrity. Seems a lot of DC stylists aren't. My stylist was snarky big time when I talked to her about it, and insisted it must be something I did. I dumped her yesterday. Anyway, a shortened version of my story. At the beginning of my journey in 2013, I happily buzzed all my hair off to begin again curly. Now DevaCurl has trashed my hair. I'm cutting it all off to my ears instead of buzzing again, but...I think I'm going to cry this time.
Gen Babbles I’m very curious as to why you say this. My daughter and I have had to stop with the diva curl her hair is falling out and damaged. So we obviously have to start something from scratch, I don’t want to make another mistake.
Lot of people make the mistake to not clarify. U have to clarify. Low poo. Heck throw a sulfate in there once a month. Lots of the brands also have links to hairloss...not your mothers curls. Devacurl. Honestly I gave up on the method and went with a salon quality sulfate/silicones. They arent the 2 harshest sulfates. They are naturally derived and hopefully I'll be okay 😆 I'm starting with Aveda right now.
I’m glad you’ve had no issues!! I’m assuming it must be certain products or certain batches they might be having issues with. There are many like you that haven’t had anything bad happen which is why some have came up with these types of theories. This is kind of something I really like to think isn’t actually happening but I also feel like I can’t just sit back either...
Same - I started CGM almost a year ago and have basically only been using DevaCurl since then. I am continuing to use the products, but watching carefully for any irritation or problems; but in any case it sounds like DC needs new PR people, pronto. Ignoring a problem like this is a TERRIBLE approach. I’m so sorry for the people who have been adversely affected.
I had just started using it recently. I threw away what I had. Im not willing to risk it. Im not willing to chop my hair off to start over. Also the dispicable way divacurl has handled the situation is horrible, i do not want to support such a company.
I think it'll probably take a few months for you to get the damage. By the time you notice it, the damage will be irreversible. Is it worth waiting to see what will happen? Not for me... Out the trash it went.
if I were you I' use the products but change with other products and generalky frequently having a good cleanse, no rigid no-poo etc. My hair really loves oil ... I (started with oils after i saw Ayeshas Video about it). I used Olaplex #3, too and aphogee 2steps. I also take hair vitamins. I will try the DevaCurl products in the future, they are very expensive here in Germany but when I come to the US next time DC is on my list (not the no/low poo stuff though)
The no poo method made my hair fall out. Now I shampoo and exfoliate my scalp once a week and finally my hair is starting to grow. My hair looked better before I started using expensive products specifically for curly hair 😭
Deva curl user for 4 years, nothing but. My hair is a wreck, what would you recommend? What can I try? My hair is exactly like yours, if of course I can do something about this dry frizz
I have eczema and DevaCurl made it worse. So much so, I had to cut all my hair off. I was also in the process of growing my hair out for the first time and just started embracing my curls. Almost 10 years of hair growth, all gone. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist. And when your career is hair, this sucks. AG balance shampoo helped calm my hair down again, luckily. I noticed whenever I colored my hair, it would react oddly when I’d been using DevaCurl products too. Not sure if any other professionals had the same issue...
My color never would last which I thought was kind of weird.... now when I tone and use other brands I have no issues with it lasting... kind of odd right!
I started using the line 3 months ago and my curls are drier and more brittle. Thankfully I haven’t had hair loss but I did experience scalp irritation. But come find out, several of the products contain sodium hydroxide. This is the main active ingredient in lye relaxers. IT CAN CAUSE CHEMICAL BURNS, HAIR LOSS, AND DESTROY YOUR CURL PATTERN. Lesson learned for me. Read the labels ladies
I was using deva for a while and then my hair got ruined. You can see where I had grown out the old color and heat damage bc the DC stuff damaged it even more and moving somewhere with a harsher climate fast forwarded my big chop bc of it. I had no choice and I’ve been behind a chair since 2006. Still growing out and no more DC! I don’t know what they cheated out on but they certainly changed! My hair is strong as nails and I have colored and bleached and heat damaged it so much with little need to cut it ever. And yet this stuff aided in my cutting off over a foot of hair that I worked so hard to grow out healthy and wear natural. Plus side is that it is now 100% virgin hair but it’s still growing out from an unwanted haircut. So sad that they have done this to their brand.
I e been using devacurl since November of 2017 and I was just starting my journey thinking I was doing a great job and working with my hair and now I’m just upset and hurt and I feel disrespected! They lied! They had issues and they haven’t said shit! It’s horrible. I’m looking for new shampoo and conditioner and I’ve been using Rizos Curls products to style. Idk if I want to try AG or Innersense. I started using the “think dirty” app and AG is rated just as badly as Devacurl! Smh
Anything without parabens will be because the chemicals they use to replace parabens are less stable. Look where they fall on the list the lower on the list the better.
I really think so. If ur scalp is all greasy and hair folicles and pore are clogged it can cause this. Balding itching from build up etc. This is so screwed up on many many levels
Every video I see on this, you all are so devastated and I get it, but you guys can't blame yourselves! It sounds to me like at some point the formula changed and I'm a firm believer that companies should be mandated to advise consumers every time they change a formula. Reminds me to keep checking labels as I repurchase them. I'm so sorry you took a hit on this, it isn't right.
Hey Kristyn, I admire you so much and love your hair! I just started doing the curly girl method and I bought the Deva Curl products last month. Do you think I should toss these full bottles of product?? I really do not want to ruin my hair :( Much love ++
I say try to return them if you can. I would not use them or donate them. You might save them with the receipt (if you can't return) and keep an eye on what develops. Who knows, perhaps you might be eligible for compensation down the road.
I would recommend, that if those items are going into the trash anyway, send them back to the company with an explanation. You would only lose shipping if they deny you a refund, but if your clients are getting damaged from these products, they should know better than to deny you a complete refund! Document everything for back up.
There is a class action lawsuit if you go to India Batson’s RUclips channel she’s got the link to join the lawsuit and she has stopped using all the diva curl she has a very emotional video as well and speaks about Aisha who I guess has shaved her head which is horrible I’m so glad I found these videos in time to stop the little damage that has already started on my hair
Keep fighting don’t throw it away- might need it for the lawsuit-the Truth always comes to light - I’ve lost half my hair and got huge rat knots from the melt into moisture- We can’t change the past but we can change the future with truth- hang in there-
Check out the Think Dirty app where you can check to see how “clean” products are. I just started using Innersense but also like Jessicurl. Both can be bought on Amazon.
My hair has always been my favorite feature of mine and some may say that is vain but it's a huge part of who I am. I have never had known effects from Deva Curl, but have stopped using them. I feel bad for the stylists who told clients to use this product and then they may have been effected. I know if I was a stylist I would feel even worst about damaging someone else hair than my own. It's not your fault but that doesn't take the guilt away.
I used Deva curl for about 6 months a couple of years ago. I never had scalp issues until I started using their Delight shampoo and conditioner. I told my Deva stylist didn't care to use the products during my appointment because of that, and she said she couldn't do the Deva cut with out using the products with it. She totally dismissed my concerns and said I probably wasn't washing everything out well enough. For real, I was pissed. I'm in my 30's, I think I figured out how to properly wash my hair at this point. Stopped using the products and won't go back to her ever again. Although time went on, the scalp itchyness never completely went away ( I just saw it as a win that at list I was mostly itch free on wash day at least) I recently found As I Am has a line for dry and itchy scalp, and it has done wonders. I no longer have to wash my hair every other day for minimal relief from itching. After 2 uses, the itching has gone away completely. Just throwing this out there in case anyone else has had that issue. It's been such a life saver. I thought I would go through the rest of my life with these scalp issues.
Sadly.. not as thoroughly as we would hope or think. They compromise products but always cutting corners to find cheapest ingredients to maximize the profit. Isnt that messed up when the savings are certainly not passed along to the consumer. Smhh
I went “no poo” 10 years ago (just apple cider vinegar rinses) and have never looked back. I have super thick knee length hair with loose curls now and I’m glad I’m cautious. I don’t trust anything I can’t pronounce. Also, vinegar is hella cheap. And olive oil on the ends too.
This video made me feel less alone. Thank you for your empathy and understanding my pain
@@barbaraceli4782 you shouldn't feel so guilty about it because you couldn't know that
Light poo gave me itchy burning irritated scalp and the consistancy turned into a hard gel after a few uses and I hate the chemical smell most products have; with the decadence line my hair fell out and I though maybe I’m putting the conditioner is too close to my scalp?
This breaks my heart that so my influencers & hairstylists feel to blame and they are not
my scalp is on fire , even after stopping DC, and my hair is fried. what chemicals do you avoid ? I dont know to buy
@La vie En rose I haven't heard if that one.ty.i will check it out. This is SO SAD that thousands of us have destroyed hair and injured scalps
Hi Ada, how long did it take to recover your curls? What products did you use? Please tell.
I've been having issues. I still have their products and just learned about it! What. The. Hell!? Been using Deva curl forever and had hair loss/ scalp issues, irritation, bleeding, itches, odor. This isn't your fault. You didn't create the line. Us curly girls gotta stick together.
Elizabeth Barrett Innersense or Jessicurl
I’m new to all of this. But regardless. You’re integrity and honesty is commendable. Hang in there Hugs
This seems like a good class action lawsuit in the making.
Vicki Johnson I think there is one...
Theres an investigation to open one up.
Lorraine Massey left and devacurl change for the worse.
I’m glad this info has finally come out. My hair loss is significant around the crown even tho I only used Deva curl for s year.
What products did you switch to?
@@allyvillanueva3716 Hairstory. They are very expensive (too expensive, really) so I'm still looking for other options. Currently I'm using Burt's Bees baby shampoo (not great), Hairstory New Wash Rich (only as conditioner), Hairstory Hair Balm, and Hairstory Lift (texturizing spray to add body and lift).
Jasmine in my mind
It affected my hair differently.
I think because of the way Deva has handled the situation that no matter what they do to rectify it a lot of people will never trust them again.
I'm a stylist as well, and have started to switch my clients over to Chi's Agave & Aloe Curl Line.
Write it off on your taxes, Girly. The universe will repay you for doing the right thing. I have so much respect for you. ❤️
I am a salon owner. Many companies will buy back your products if you buy into theirs. Might be worth asking some of your reps.
Kimberly Rinehart alrighty then. If you know the contact name or any info to give out, I’m sure it’s appreciated. Thanks 😊 for the info!
Marcus Scott Balahari old saying...”takes one to know one” 😂🤣🤣
The only change in my routine was adding the Deva Curl Melt Into Moisture, biggest mistake ever😢
Thanks again & God Bless 🤗💕
What about using LUS??? You enjoyed the product when you tried it right. I am a B3-CA curly girl and I think it’s fantastic.

As a consumer, I've dumped all of my devacurl products. The fact that my own scalp has been itchy since I tried the no poo, coupled with all the credible information that has surfaced left me no choice. I don't have loads of hair to begin with, and am not willing to risk it. In the garbage it all went.
Don't throw it away bc of the lawsuit
JustJocely ugh I know that now, but honestly I just wanted it gone, and was not aware of the class action when I trashed the products....
I really feel that while Lorraine Massey's was still with deva curl products it was best it had been .
It's sad so much has changed
Ive been using Devacurl decadence leave-in conditioner for a couple years now. My hair is very dry n gets snarly n tangly since using devacurl. I may need to get my hair cut because of it. I will try other products as of now.
Your hair is soooo pretty. I think it's the most beautiful curls I've ever seen
I’m working on one now 😁 I know it’s been awhile 😔 let know if there’s anything you would love to see a video over! 💕
@@KristynJoanne good to know.. look forward to seeing you soon!!
Honey it’s not your fault:( this breaks my heart
You should try bounce curl I started my curly girl method back in august and they are amazing I’m glad I never bought deva curl
I use ag hair, ouidad, and innersense products lately all have similar products to the foam and gel. Have been happy so far with each brand :)
Hey I believe you can send it back for a refund. In the curl ninjas Facebook, many other stylist are doing that same thing.
I find that my hair loss has been WAAAAY worse since I started the curly girl method, regardless of product :(
Gen Babbles I’m very curious as to why you say this.
You can send it all back for a refund. I did and got a reimbursement check.
I have been using DevaCurl for a year and a half thankfully with no issues. Sorry for so many suffering.
@@KristynJoanneYes! I can't imagine how you feel as a stylist. Lots of responsibility. Thank you for your video 💜💜
Hold on to the product, they have to recall their products eventually especially with the class action law suit that has started.
Are their products still bad for you hair?? I just bought their wavemaker and I don‘t want to throw it away :((
I just used deva curl for the first time! My hair loves it! I don't know what to do😔
I have bought recently as well. I change up what I use every wash. So maybe why I haven't had any problems either?
I had just started using it recently. I threw away what I had. Im not willing to risk it. Im not willing to chop my hair off to start over. Also the dispicable way divacurl has handled the situation is horrible, i do not want to support such a company.
I think it'll probably take a few months for you to get the damage. By the time you notice it, the damage will be irreversible. Is it worth waiting to see what will happen? Not for me... Out the trash it went.
I will be looking for a new product . I feel so bad for all the ladies having trouble with this brand
if I were you I' use the products but change with other products and generalky frequently having a good cleanse, no rigid no-poo etc.
Try curlsmith from ulta ..
I’ve been using AG Hair, ouidad, and innersense products :) so far happy!!
I just switched to Innersense and really like them. Also, Jessicurl.
Isn’t this kinda what happened to Wen users? Correct me if I’m wrong please.
I really think so. If ur scalp is all greasy and hair folicles and pore are clogged it can cause this. Balding itching from build up etc. This is so screwed up on many many levels
Thats what happened with WEN.
I know a lot of curly salons are offering innersense. Jessicurl might be a good one too. I'm not a stylist, but I've seen those in the salons.
Yes-these are the two product lines I use
Every video I see on this, you all are so devastated and I get it, but you guys can't blame yourselves! It sounds to me like at some point the formula changed and I'm a firm believer that companies should be mandated to advise consumers every time they change a formula. Reminds me to keep checking labels as I repurchase them. I'm so sorry you took a hit on this, it isn't right.
Hey Kristyn, I admire you so much and love your hair! I just started doing the curly girl method and I bought the Deva Curl products last month. Do you think I should toss these full bottles of product?? I really do not want to ruin my hair :(
Much love ++
I say try to return them if you can. I would not use them or donate them. You might save them with the receipt (if you can't return) and keep an eye on what develops. Who knows, perhaps you might be eligible for compensation down the road.
I'd return them or use them to wash delicates
You can def return them as long as you have the receipt!!
I would recommend, that if those items are going into the trash anyway, send them back to the company with an explanation. You would only lose shipping if they deny you a refund, but if your clients are getting damaged from these products, they should know better than to deny you a complete refund! Document everything for back up.
LOVE This video and your hair girl, can you make one showing how you cut or dye it and make sure to wear a cape!
Keep fighting don’t throw it away- might need it for the lawsuit-the Truth always comes to light - I’ve lost half my hair and got huge rat knots from the melt into moisture-
We can’t change the past but we can change the future with truth- hang in there-
what products would you recommend? now that i’m not using devacurl i don’t know what to use
Check out the Think Dirty app where you can check to see how “clean” products are. I just started using Innersense but also like Jessicurl. Both can be bought on Amazon.
Think Dirty app...use it so you can find a quality product that you feel comfortable selling in your salon.
I'm pretty sure you're referring to Ayesha Malik at 8 minutes. I loved her hair!
Yes that is her! I do too! I am feeling for her soo much right now.. 💔
@@KristynJoanne I had been wondering why she stopped making videos and it's terrible that this is why.
Don't companies test their products before selling them to the public?
Sadly.. not as thoroughly as we would hope or think. They compromise products but always cutting corners to find cheapest ingredients to maximize the profit. Isnt that messed up when the savings are certainly not passed along to the consumer. Smhh
I am a cosmetologist too. I know exactly how you feel 💔🙏🏻
Question if you’re not a professional Nail tech or hairstyle how does anyone buy this product and make sure it’s not a fake products out there
I feel like this is too wide spread for the source of the problem to be fake products. Also, I purchased from reputable places like Ulta.
