Technique 5: Disco Deaky Mode
Some people just gotta dance! 😊
Another part of John Deacon’s playing style is the use of the root-fifth-octave arpeggio. He uses it both ascending and descending. It appears in a large number of Queen songs.
He also often follows the vocal melody and/or vocal phrasing with his bass playing.
Whereas a lot of rock players rhythmically follow the kick drum John Deacon often doesn’t. Most obviously on Bohemian Rhapsody at the start of the second verse when the drums come in John stays hitting a single root note at the start of each bar whilst the kick drum plays on the 1, 3, 3and.
It sounds to me like his playing was heavily influenced by 60s soul music and players like James Jamerson.
Very nice comment, thank you!!
I love this comment about following the vocals. I'd been struggling to get the timing right for the opening of The Show Must Go On and you flipped a light switch in my head.
Don’t forget to lick your fingers at regular intervals too!
:) :)
A must! lol
Can you do somthing like this with Paul McCartney?
YEEEaaaaaaH!
I really liked this style of video. It's very cool. Do more if you can.
Thank you Rafael!!
Queen. Especially Deacon. My new fave channel
Yeeah!! Thank youuuu!!
Thank you....John Deacon, the Ace of Bass......Hi John, we hope you’re keeping well🌺
It's brilliant, Man!
Bravo!
P.S. I would also mention a 'sliding up'n'down' technique - it can be heard at lots of QUEEN's songs and Deaky's basslines and it adds a lot of coolness in 'em!
Yes right! Nice observation!
Great analysis and demonstration of your points. Deacon has always been one of my favorite bass players, hands down!
Great video, thanks for posting!
Thank you Paul!!
Great video dude, cheers from Brazil. Deacon has an unmistakable style and is very underrated. He was essential for the band. We cannot forget your ability as a lyricist, like "Spread your wings''.
4 other examples of the “A Kind Of Magic Style” are One Vision (same album) Breakthru, Hammer To Fall and the final part of The Miracle
I also forgot Rain must fall
@@LeftyBassman Anyway yor video shows that you don't need to do super shredding or sparkling slap&tapping stuff to leave a mark in music history, we basspalyers should keep this in mind more often :)
I really love Queen, it’s my favorite band of all time, and Queen is my inspiration to start learning to play a bass #QUEENFOREVER
Omg I've been waiting a long while for a video like this
I hope you have fun!
Hey man, just found your channel and i love it. huge fan of queen and john deacon and i’m glad to see you’re still uploading. keep at it!
Super helpful, since John Deacon is my idol in bass, some of the things you showed in the video were things I had already noticed but I'm glad that this video is giving me more security now
this video helped me to identify some things though
thanks
Well played, love the colour of the P bass, is that teal?
Thanks so much for this analysis and illustrations! I love Queen and it’s so great to see the bass in the spotlight! Bravo 👏
In the fourth, you should put hammer to fall bassline too😊
Btw amazing vid
Yes in some parts of the verse
I loved! I want more! Thank you! 🎸👍❤
Part of John Deacon´s magic is his sort of mid rangy punchy sound with a slight touch of dirt and a tight lock with Roger Taylor. The bass players Brian and Roger use now are great, but clearly the John Deacon magic is not there. Great video btw., thank you mate.
Great analysis!
Smart. Thank you!
You should do a Paul McCartney playing style video
Not easy to do, Paul I think doesn't have a proper style, he started with root and fifth and then he played a lot of melodic parts...
Good man lefty! keep em coming
Thank you George!!
And... root, fifth and octave. Very often.
Bravo
Grazie! :)
Great video my friend!
Thank you!!
Breakthru is the same riff but different chords?
Oh yes, nice!
Спасибо!
5: He liked to be percussive. MOST Queen songs had at least a couple of dead notes in their basslines.
Another example in octaves: Coming Soon
Do Paul McCartney playing style next
Hello
Hi!
Please do some AC/DC
Does Body Language really count? Deacon doesn't play on it.
I guess not everybody knows it. Although he did play on it in the few times it was performed live.
