Another part of John Deacon’s playing style is the use of the root-fifth-octave arpeggio. He uses it both ascending and descending. It appears in a large number of Queen songs.
He also often follows the vocal melody and/or vocal phrasing with his bass playing.
Whereas a lot of rock players rhythmically follow the kick drum John Deacon often doesn’t. Most obviously on Bohemian Rhapsody at the start of the second verse when the drums come in John stays hitting a single root note at the start of each bar whilst the kick drum plays on the 1, 3, 3and.
It sounds to me like his playing was heavily influenced by 60s soul music and players like James Jamerson.

I love this comment about following the vocals. I'd been struggling to get the timing right for the opening of The Show Must Go On and you flipped a light switch in my head.

    It's brilliant, Man!
    Bravo!
P.S. I would also mention a 'sliding up'n'down' technique - it can be heard at lots of QUEEN's songs and Deaky's basslines and it adds a lot of coolness in 'em!

Great video dude, cheers from Brazil. Deacon has an unmistakable style and is very underrated. He was essential for the band. We cannot forget your ability as a lyricist, like "Spread your wings''.

@@LeftyBassman Anyway yor video shows that you don't need to do super shredding or sparkling slap&tapping stuff to leave a mark in music history, we basspalyers should keep this in mind more often :)

Part of John Deacon´s magic is his sort of mid rangy punchy sound with a slight touch of dirt and a tight lock with Roger Taylor. The bass players Brian and Roger use now are great, but clearly the John Deacon magic is not there. Great video btw., thank you mate.

Not easy to do, Paul I think doesn't have a proper style, he started with root and fifth and then he played a lot of melodic parts...

5: He liked to be percussive. MOST Queen songs had at least a couple of dead notes in their basslines.

I guess not everybody knows it. Although he did play on it in the few times it was performed live.
