In 1983 East Berlin, dedicated Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), doubting that a famous playwright (Sebastian Koch) is loyal to the Communist Party, receives approval to spy on the man and his actress-lover Christa-Maria (Martina Gedeck). Wiesler becomes unexpectedly sympathetic to the couple, then faces conflicting loyalties when his superior takes a liking to Christa-Maria and orders Wiesler to get the playwright out of the way.

“In the unlikely event that damage has occurred, you may claim compensation.” Ya, you knocked things down from my piano and ripped up my couch cushions.
Well, it's good then? You got some cash after they wrecked your house! 😅
East German marks. Little more than ration coupons.
@@syukrinasir3774no it’s actually a test. In Yugoslavia we had the same “offer” if you file you will be investigated and found as trader. The fact that he has western books is not good on top of that
@@vrcmf3172 Quite. By calling the extensive damage they caused an 'unlikely event', the Stasi officer pretty much hinted at the victim to shut up about the search warrant if he wants to avoid more of their 'friendly visits'.

How did I not know about this?
If they wanted you to know, you would have known...
This is a great film.
Hey Johnny off topic/weird request, i was wondering if you could do a couple more clips from The Pacific as well? Im referring to moments from episode 10, Sledge and Sids final talk, when Sledge breaks down, when Leckie comes home etc. Just a suggestion.
With regard to the foreign war movie clips, please dont ever stop! You turned me onto great movies like "The Emperor in August" with clips like these. Thank you, you’re doing a fantastic job!
Thanks man! I swear I had that scene up but I will double check and get back to you!

These guys were no joke… teacher of mine was in hohenschönhausen the Stasi prison simply for being in the „Peace Movement“… and my guess is a lot of them worked for the West afterwards.
That was scary AF
Welcome to Democratic Socialism.
this was a pretty neat movie

This is a warning folks, of things in the future.
Gosh! Where do they think they are? Mar a Lago? Melania's closet?
Gosh it's as if you are defending Trump hiding sensitive documents after he was asked to hand them back.
They were called in East Germany: Gay-Detlefs.
This is a must see film. I have it on DVD. Should come out with a PG version for high school students to watch. Sadly the Stasi could be replaced with the FBI or Homeland Security and it wouldn't be much different.
Wrong.
@@FrankExchangeofViews. The FBI and Homeland Security violate peoples' rights all the time.
You don't anything about communism and its apparatus. Comparing Stasi/KGB/SB or any other security services from former communist countries with FBI or Homeland Security is deeply offensive. I wish you hadn't experienced the suffering people in Eastern Europe had.
@@m.z.8761 Somebody's name is off the list now- good job!

This is Scotland 2024
how is this any different than the FBI
FBI isn't working for a communist autocracy (unless you're into conspiracy theories, i guess) 😅
#1: the FBI needs a warrant from a judge, not a commanding officer
#2: the FBI would not consider “eastern” newspapers and literature incriminating
#3: the FBI doesn’t raid 100 people per night every night like the Stasi and KGB did
Very different. At least you can publicly criticize the fbi. In eastern block in reality just being searched like this was bad. Imagine if you then criticized Them. You’d be beaten in jail. In Yugoslavia my neighbor was angry that the special police (UDBA) broke into his home so they could simply keep an eye on you our village. They took him to jail and electrocuted his teeth, and injured the souls of his feet. I was a kid but remember seeing him
you need a search warrant that details what exactly is being searched for and nothing more. In addition unlawful search and seizure is unconstitutional
Life in the useless police state of Scotland and London
And the US.
Glorious DDR.
Progressive leftist convention.
Yawn that's right good boy blame the Left for taking your freedoms away while Republicans ban books, women's choice and try to overthow elections.
Deutschland is so divided even to this day.
It's just a repeat of what has been since 1945.
This has many different reasons, like the regional characters many Germans don't feel connected to.
Bulgaria’s society is far more divided since the end of the 18th Century and Ottoman Times
Ahhh..those '80ies in a communist country, glad I grew up in the capitalist West 😎
Youre not poor or brown then i assume 😂
@@DmoneyS44 Nope, but we werent that rich either...but hey, colour TV, video machines and Commodore 64's. We had it quite good
