Our Bike Rack for When We Tow the Airstream

- In today's video, Steve demonstrates our new-to-us bike rack installed on the front hitch of our GMC Sierra. As many of you know, we have been trying to get a front hitch for a while now to allow for easier bike carrying on moving days. We got the hitch installed when we bought our new-to-us truck and Steve's dad gave us an amazing Yakima bike rack he was no longer using. It works great! We have no visibility issues and the rack seems heavy duty so we won't have to worry about it on the road.
P.S.: We realize we didn't have the arm in the correct position when showing off the rack...unfortunately we didn't realize it until after this video was published. We know better now!

Are you all still doing this? Over the long haul, how is it working out? Did you ever do the test on covering the bikes and restricting airflow into the engine?
I like it 👍 wish you would have show the headlight at night just to see if it actually covers the light
Thank you. You have made up my mind. I will be buying a rear bike rack. Your's will be just plastered with dead bugs, and you view of the road was in fact hampered.
Glad to help!
I’ve been thinking about how we’re going to transport our bikes, like the idea of the front rack. Thanks for the idea!
Most welcome!
I thought the part that pivots up went over the crossbar!
It's "YAK-ah-mah" after the city in Washington.
I was wrong, consulted the manufacturers pic, you are correct, my apologies.
The ratcheting arm hook needs to be on the tire right in front of your fork. You have it too far down. But good job on installing a hitch in the front of the truck, very smart.
Thanks! We learned that soon after shooting this video and make sure its properly setup as we drive now :)
Thanks Steve/Courtney for this overview. We've stored ours inside our Airstream when towing and it's not the best solution. I considered the rack that mounts on the rear but didn't like the idea of drilling holes for a permanent mount. Do you know if the rack also would work on the rear hitch when not towing? Might be easier to park the truck in towns/cities when commuting to biking areas? Again thanks for the demo...been looking forward to this for a while!
Yup! We can switch the bike rack to the rear hitch receiver on the truck when we're not towing! That's our plan if we ever want to take the bikes somewhere instead of having them up front when there is no need.
A cover might obstruct air flow to the radiator.
Nice review! Glad that it works for you but I wouldn't carry them there, But that's me...
I've seen racks that fastened with an extension between the trailer and truck but adding an extension may affect control. I see bikes on the front of truck campers and Class Cs all the time but don't recall ever seeing any on Class As. My trek mountain bike has quick release for the front wheel but then you gotta find a place for the wheel.
We have that rack. The front bit that swings up needs to be high on the wheel and then clamped down. You have it positioned way too low. And the accent is on the first syllable of Yakima.
Yup! We had the front bar positioned too low, but we realized that after the video went public (see the video's description). Appreciate the assist on the pronunciation! :)
You got it wrong! The extension arm needs to come up farther and over the wheel. Also, was curious to see how the closest bike would interact with the truck, contact with handlebars, grill, pedals etc.
I was about to say the same thing, the arm is there to hold it down on the carrier not to keep it from rolling forward.
I know it's been some time since you posted this. May I ask what year your truck is, (2500?) and what hitch is installed. Thank you for the video.
I would think a bike cover would hamper airflow through the radiator..
We've thought about that as well, actually. We'll have to do some testing.
Will both bikes face the same way or do you face one one direction and the other in opposite direction? That is how I have to do it on my 2 bike rack
The bikes will face opposite directions on that bike rack.
I just wonder about the legality from state to state of carrying them on the front. Have you had any problems with something like that?
Hmm...haven't personally checked, but we aren't aware of any regulations against bicycles in the front. We've seen people carrying bikes on the front of their vehicles all over the country.
Look a bit in the way being on front. But what do I know? See? Y'all just like Nathan, can't just say The Trailer, noooo, it's got to be THE AIRSTREAM. 😂 You ever hear people say, "The Jayco?"
I would be concerned with impatient drivers passing your rig and not realizing that you’ve got the racks extended in front.
The bikes will probably get covered with bugs if you don't cover them!🕷🐞🐜🐛
I know, that's the biggest negative. :(
