It's cool how you dial your sound in as a live band. It will certainly make life easier for the person mixing the album. Also means when you play live you know how to sound great as well.

Mid range cut... Yeah, I made a similar discovery at some point myself. For years now, I've ran the tone stack of my amp with neither any treble nor bass. Midrange all the way up. I do not want to mess around with bass frequencies. That's what bass players are for in a band. And you are absolutely right; it does make the guitar sound bigger. I wish more players could realise this, 'cause there's a ton of them out there who sound all muddy, because they think they need all that low end...
When I was a lad in the late 1980s a band's guitarist was using a JCM 800 half stack and had a great Iron Maiden kind of lead tone. It sounded so good during the gig. I tried the amp after the gig and it was horrible sounding to me. So much treble and it was really thin and not as distorted as I expected either. It was not a tone I would ever dial in for practicing or for trying to dial in Maiden tones, but it was _the_ perfect Maiden tone when the was band playing. Lesson learned, but I constantly have to remind myself of it.
As someone new to playing a bass (or any band instrument), I found this really interesting. I'd never considered that you would need to consider how the instruments fit together. Always a learning experience with you, and I thank you for it. I love the 'Sound Like....' vids that you and Cici have done for the same reason.
Hi Dave! Love the fact that you are crafting your own signature sound with gear that speaks to you, rather than using the stuff internet says you should use. Very rare these days. Inspired me to experiment with my own tone and do something out of my 40 year playing comfort zone! Cheers for your inspiration!
Very excited for the album. Dave revealed on the stream yesterday that Was it All My Fault is on the album, that's a great one from one of his solo albums :-) Been listening to his solo stuff recently, interesting to hear a few of the tracks from the bands first album in their earlier form. Plus there are a lot of crazy good songs that could become Red Giant tracks.
Hello from belgium. When i play chord and drums in looping i use the neck pickup (warm sound)... For melody/solo i use bridge pickup to cut in the mix. We have to use our ears to make music! Well done.
You have a unique tone Dave. It's really pretty dark compared to most guitarists, but somehow you can still hear it. Your explanation here is really good - by putting the bass on 0 at the amp but cranking the low end of the pedal, you've dialed out the specific bass frequencies you're competing against but left in the bass frequencies that make a guitar sound "big". Sort of what a mixing engineer would usually do.
Great information! You hear so many heavier players pumping up too much bass, so it chugs and just don't demonstrate any evidence of being a team player with the sonic diversity of a full band setting. I'd happily be in a band with you Master Simpson. But I definitely wouldn't be able to keep up with your sheer incredible ability on the guitar 😅
brother, please wear ear-plugs when you are rippin' at full volume. Being 40 is coming up, you'll be losing some hearing range naturally. Try to keep those ears healthy so you can keep hearing! We love you, guy.
That's why Keith Richards took the low E off his guitar...he said it was an unnecessary appendage that muddied the mix. Hence, his 5 string open G style
Randy Rhoads did the midrangey guitar sound that really made itself known. That golden plexi DID fatten up too. I could'nt get on with anything except Marshall personally - just sold a valve Blackstar HT 5 I could'nt love, and bought an old Marshall valvestate solid state in its place - and the old spring reverb therein is super resonant.
Yeah, i have a ridiculous amount of mids live. I have a rat, tubescreamer, and p90s running into a katana with maxed mids. You have to have that live, it makes a massive difference. Something else i realised is less gain also helps a lot.
hi dave, do you find fuzz faces have too much low end to sit in a band mix? even stacking them with a tubescreamer it just has too much low end and its really diffucult to use in my band, either you eat the whole band or you get lost in it, very difficult to handle, at home is great but i want all my gear to be useful for live, maybe fuzz face is not for me
So to cut a long story short Marshall is the perfect amp ? Who would have thought ? Actually it's a bit more complicated than that. You have to be as good as Dave for it to make a difference. Fortunately for us he actually hears what he is playing and knows what sounds good - something I have never achieved.
Dave hasn't after all these years got the hang of the concept of putting your phone on silent whilst making a youtube video. I suspect when he finally does the blinds will be fully open and a confused window cleaner looking straight into the camera. Could be worse, that scene from the film The Ring behind him might start moving and reveal an old well. The lights fading , Dave, runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! and don't answer your phone for at least 7 days. Great video by the way, joking! Even I can't watch a 30 min video in 2 mins. Will watch later. I have my monthly appointment with shower gel and some water.
Paid no attention whatsoever to Chapmans 'til you played them, but you make them sound great, Dave. Not that I'll ever play one; Fender and Boss guy 'til I die. Sorry. #RedGiantForever
@@LauraSquirrel No, for it's small and local, within Earth's atmosphere. And definitely not thermonuclear but electromagnetic, so no red giant death will become it.
I absolutely love it - such a great tone and song 🙂

It sounds incredible ❤

@@martinemesguitar I'd choose "Arie der Königin der Nacht“, from Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte".
@@PretendingToBeCanadian69 Might need Queenie to sing that one? :-)

Thats the same experience I had with Marshalls. I generally hate them for playing at home, but love it in a band setting.

That rocks bro. That’s awesome you had to go back to your first sound you developed with the Marshall MG. I always like that amp sound the best.
your sound is bang on as always, will fit mix fine sometimes it will take time that's why you need a few amps .

Yah I have a marshall origon 20 and I don't even use the bass knob. Instantly muddy!! But I have considered modding the amp one of these days 🤙
I think the marshall solid state amps have a really good power amp tech. Massive sounding

That made perfect sense! Thanks 👍
That harmonizer is killer, it's like instant Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden double guitar sounds.
So exciting Dave🙏🏼

That Golden Plexi clean tone is ace 🤟🏽 (as are all these tones )

I do yeps. They tend to interfere with the bass unless there quite harsh sounding.
That guitar looks like it came out of Yggdrasil
What's the broken infinity symbol on your sweat shirt?
Devin Townsend.
Deep Purple Infinity album from a few years ago
Cheers
Hey Dave, Do You know anything about the Laney Solid State. I'm looking at the 2x12 Combo
Not really no. Sorry.
Killer outro jam! \m/
Sounds like Queenie needs some Alan Entwistle Neodymium bass pickups for her 'muddy' bass tone!
Nopes. Her tone is immense as it is.
A bit late, DST I guess 😅
Hello Dave 😎
Marshall MG? The cheaper solid state unit?
Yep
Marshalls always were good at cutting through a mix.

Get off your knees ffs
Does that MG have a Presence knob?
Nope
What guitar is that
Chapman Pro X.
#no 9 is good

Why Red Giant, what's the story behind this name?
Dave told it elsewhere, it's from an Alice in Chains song I think.
It's also a name for
what will happen to the sun eventually.

You should have tried the Marshall silver jubilee and the plexi!
I have done in the past. The MG does as good job as either of those.
