The Best of Godzilla: Top 5 Films

- There are over thirty films in Toho's long-running franchise. That can be a little intimidating at first glance. But hopefully this will make things a little easier for those looking to give the King of the Monsters a chance. Barring the original film and its American reedit, here are my thoughts on five of the best Godzilla films and why they standout from the rest.
Really respect your picks on this list. Godzilla vs. Hedorah is too frowned upon and sends a crucial, urgent and dark message to the human race just like the original film. It's easily the best of the 70's showa films apart from the original Mechagodzilla films. Invasion of Astro Monster is also one of my favorite showa films. I prefer it over its predecessor and own a VHS from Blockbuster that I rented a couple times when I was a kid. It was one of my first Showa films to experience and holds a special place in my heart. Best of Toho's Ghidorah.
I agree, the original GMK monsters choice would of been a lot better than what they went with, it’s kinda weird seeing Ghidora being a good guy, it doesn’t fit him very well
but it is new change after 40 years, it does get tiring seeing the same monsters in the same role over and over again. So I am glad that they did something different then just creating something( like mechagodzilla 15094)
@@wabakin7700 It was for $$$$
I think Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla could be ranked amongst these, due to it's compelling characters and drama. And Godzilla 84, because of it's dark serious tone, scary take on Godzilla, production value, and having symbolism of the cold war, therefore giving it some substance
10: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
9: Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster
8: Godzilla vs. Biollante
7: Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster
6: King Kong vs. Godzilla
5: Godzilla vs. Destroyah
4: Godzilla vs. Mothra
3: Godzilla (2014)
2: Shin Godzilla
1: Godzilla (1954)
I agree with your choices 100%. You can watch Godzilla movies for different genres. Comedy, horror, action, war. One of my guilty pleasures is Godzilla vs Megalon for the tag-team fun.
Godzilla vs Hedorah deserves a Criterion release.
Criterion has acquired the licences to most of the Showa films. The only ones they don't have are the films held by Universal (King Kong vs Godzilla) and Kraken Releasing (Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs Hedorah, and Godzilla vs Gigan).
Aaaaaaand here we are a year later with a Criterion box!
I actually thought terror of mecha Godzilla is very underrated. It has a compelling human story with some tragic character drama along with having some great kaiju action. Titanosaurus is also a sympathetic monster.
Also goji being underpowered is great and action in the city is always welcome. I personally like it more than vs mechagodzilla
I have a completely different top 5 list, though I agree that GMK, Shin Godzilla, and Mothra vs. Godzilla are very good. I used to really like Invasion of Astro-Monster but now its a but lower on my list (it used to be in my top 10, now its just in the middle) due to the extremely slow pacing.
5. Gojira
4. Godzilla vs. Biollante
3. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
2. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
1. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
The biggest failings I think with GMK was the studio interfering way too much and the strict schedule and budgetary measures on the film.
If Kaneki was given the same liberty as he had with Gamera, allowed a longer production cycle and free reigns to do as he wished, the movie might have been better than the gamera trilogy.
i’ve always been one of those guys that was a huge fan of Hedorah for a lot of reasons you stated. I got hate for it but i like the weirdness of the film.
my personal top 5 is
Gojira(for obvious reasons)
2000(for an oddly enjoyable cast, human rivalry, a buildup to a monster since it was a rock for a majority of the movie that was approached how i feel people would approach something from outer space)
Destoroyah: It felt like an amazing end to an era. It feels as if it’s a movie that will end a franchise and it leaves you sad by the death and end of godzilla. The ties to the original movie while being a clear sequel to the past heisei films
Mothra 1964: You honestly got everything right about how good mothra vs godzilla was. It is my ideal suit for the entire showa series. To me it should be the defining movie of the showa series (because 1954 was too serious to be a franchise theme).
GMK: Amazing fights, compelling story, fantastic designs for every single monster in the film. Effects are great, the origin for godzilla is unique and gives him more personality than he was having in 2000 and Megaguirus.
I understand the choice to analyze movies for their qualities as movies in general, but I think godzilla should not be forgotten, it's his film after all. The best godzilla movie would be the one that balances godzilla, the message it presents, the cinematography and of course the action.
For example, even though I find that shin godzilla is a very good movie, the monster in itself is my least favorite incarnation of the charachter, I think it looks more like destroyah than godzilla, it will be better in a godzilla animates.
13:19 Sorry but the best-looking godzilla movie remains godzilla 2014 which I find still beyond shin by its staging and its special effects.
GMK, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Tokyo SOS are among my favorites. The Millenium monster designs are great; the fights well staged; and the cast, stories, and themes engaging. A bit disappointed they used Baragon instead of Anguirus in GMK.
GMK was supposed to feature Baragon, Varan, and Anguirus. Toho overruled this and forced the inclusion of the two most popular characters (Mothra and King Ghidorah) after Godzilla. Baragon is popular so he got to stay.
It is high art, you don't judge a play because it doesn't have special effects. You may have to use a little imagination in certain areas. Godzilla movies did have good special effects. So good hollywood stole them. Of course there was sometimes the unconvincing toy car on the miniture set that made you remember it was a guy in rubber suit. But still fun.
You don't have to preach to the choir lol. I'm something of a Toho practical effects apologist myself. Eiji Tsuburaya's '60s efforts don't get the credit they deserve.
Actually, plays occassionally do use effects and those effects are a part of the play, therefore should be judged as good or bad as well.
Love it! Great insight into the Godzilla series! I'd love to see you post more often! :)
The only reason I'm still a G-fan is because of these great and worthwhile films. My top 2 are Shin and The Planet Eater. Monster action just doesn't satisfy me if the reasons for it are contrived. Great video!
Nice list! My top 5 would be 1954, Gmk, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs Destroyah and Biollante.
Biollante love!
I enjoyed both of the Kiryu movies(Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS). I loved Kiryu’s design out of the other versions of Mechagodzilla, and I especially love the concept of using the skeleton of the original as the framework. You can view it as Japan using the ultimate embodiment of their fears (the original Godzilla) and turn it into a weapon and symbol of good (kiryu) despite the risk of the uncontrollable power within it (whenever kiryu goes berserk).
I agree with your nr. 1 pick. I like Shin Godzilla because of the realism and the design of the Kamakura-San (also, godzilla looks adorable in his first appearance)
I really didnt expect the original Godzilla vs mothra to be all that but it’s easily one of my favorites from the Showa era and one of my favorite suits
15: Invasion of Astro-Monster
14: The Return of Godzilla
13: Godzilla against Mechagodzilla
12: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
11: GMK
10: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
9: Godzilla vs. Biollante
8: Godzilla vs. Hedorah
7: Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monsters
6: King Kong vs. Godzilla
5: Godzilla vs. Destroyah
4: Mothra vs. Godzilla
3: Godzilla (2014)
2: Shin Godzilla
1: Gojira
It seem like people either love or hate Godzilla VS Hedorah.
Like your picks and I agree the fights can be only good for so long since the human characters are the glue that keeps the story together and Godzilla is no Ultraman and he has no priestess like Heisei Gamera. What I look for when it comes to Godzilla films is a balance of interesting characters and spectacles like in Godzilla Final Wars, Heisei Gamera, and Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla.
Great list! Sadly i still haven't seen Shin Godzilla yet. My personal favorite is Godzilla vs Destroyah.
That may be mostly due to nostalgia though. I need to revisit the film some time.
Thanks! Definitely get around to checking out Shin G. And let me know what you think when you get the chance to revisit Destoroyah.
How does Godzilla vs Destroyah hold up? Genuinely curious.
Godzilla 84/85 in my personal opinion is the best of the modern series. It's dark story which takes its plot from the real world cold war element that was in the 1980's and put Godzilla in the middle. Special effects are great. Suit is amicable, the characters, and storyline suites very well for this film. I love it!
I love all of godzilla movies❤
When people hate on Godzilla
Me: but big monster
Whats the song at the end?
I think it's a remix of a song called Magic by Jacob Wheeler
@@marcusyee2211 thanks
I'd probably drop Astro Monster and Hedorah for Vs King Ghidorah and Son of but great video man!
Would you mind sharing why you would place Vs King Ghidorah and Son of Godzilla in those positions?
GVKG has a strong third act and extremely interesting villains. The effects are all fairly good except for a few shots here and there and most of the characters are unique with interesting motives. As for the story, I feel its one of the stronger ones of the Heisei era and has much more interesting concepts and ideas thrown into it than anything from GVM through GXM. On second thought I'd actually probably leave Astro Monster in the list but if I were to replace it I'd probably replace it with GTTHM rather than Son of.
I generally agree with all of this but I think that Biollante is a massssive omission. One of the best and most influential Godzilla films ever made.
I had something planned for Vs Biollante. Or just another video like this one that would include Vs Biollante. I consider it the best of the Heisei Godzilla films. But I don't know if I'll ever get around to it. The next video (G-Force) will be my last video, if nothing else, for quite some time.
Blunova Glad to hear its your fav of the Heisei series and very excited for your next video. Sad to hear you’re stopping afterward though! Love your channel, and hope everything is ok :)
@@Blunovain You're the best Godzilla analyst on the site. It'll be a sad wasteland of meaningless content again without you. Then again, I see how hard it can be to talk about the same franchise over and over. Especially one that tends to lack significant depth aside from a few fantastic entries. Hope you're doing alright there B.
Very interesting list! I personally have a soft spot for vs. Hedorah due to being able to see it in the theaters with my madre in my theater when it was rerunning it in 2016ish.
Here's my list:
5. Invasion of the Astro Monster - This was great scifi flick to watch. The music was a joy to listen to and the fights were entertaining. This was a movie I actually felt attached to the characters. I like to think this is what I wanted from Mothra vs. Godzilla (sorry I really don't like that movie). I also liked the mysterious ending it gives that questions whether or not Godzilla and Rodan actually won or not since they never came out of the water.
4. Godzilla: Final Wars - This is the definition of mindless fun. Using your brain isn't the objective here. The human action is pretty fun, monster action is great and the effects aren't too bad.
3. Return of Godzilla - The 80s remake of Gojira that I love a lot. The amount of destruction and character attachment is what I think makes it better than the original. Godzilla himself is also one of my favorite suits and my favorite roar. The urgency also keeps me on my seat and the small humor is pretty good too.
2. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah - It got me into the series, Destoroyah is one of my favorite monsters, the music is some of the best Ifikube's made, emotionally hurts like a son of a gun. What more can I say about the finale of the Heisei series?
1. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - This one is quite the complex movie. Time travel is a pretty touchy subject in movies, but I think this film handles it well. The human characters are also pretty enjoyable from the ex-military guy to Emiko (Rest in Peace btw), the Futurians are entertaining but a little dumb at times, and the monsters themselves are great. I love the impact this movie has on the Heisei series, completely flipping our understanding of it on its head. And Mecha King Ghidorah was so awesome first time seeing it.
Honorable Mention: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Interesting to see no Heisei rep at all, but it's understandable as to why.
honestly, Shin Godzilla's honestly Nightmare Fuel with the suit design
I totally agree with Godzilla headorah, it's one of my fav films, and headorah is my fav Godzilla kaiju
Hedorah is awesome. The monster and the movie.
My top 5
5- Mothra vs Godzilla (1964)
4- Godzilla Final Wars
3- GMK
2- Shin Godzilla
1- Gojira
Godzilla is expansive. You can do a lot with him.
Great list man can you do a top 5 kaiju video?
I don't think you guys and girls would find that too exciting. The usual suspects from the Gamera series would just knock off some of the entries on this list.
My top five favourite (Not best, 1954 is clearly the best) Godzilla films.
5: Godzilla X Mechagodzilla (2002)
4: Mothra Vs. Godzilla (1964)
3: Gojira (1954)
2: Godzilla Vs. Destroyah (1995)
1: G.M.K. (2001)
This list could change over time since I haven’t seen some of these films in a while.
Yeah Godzilla vs Hedorah is by far not for kids. I mean even Tanaka himself hated it and felt it isn’t aimed at kids at all.
I'm gratified that you did not include the original. It is a cut above most of them, but the original Gojira is not well written or edited as compared to other films from the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema.
I think most Americans give it the benefit of the doubt because they associate Japanese film with cheese and not with masterpieces like Tokyo Story, Seven Samurai, Onibaba or Battles Without Honor and Humanity.
What keeps Godzilla outside of the ranks of the other venerated Japanese films of that decade? Off the top of my head, there are no glaring writing or editing mistakes that come to mind. Positives include: Takashi Shimura is as reliable as usual, the film-noir aesthetic is beautiful and enhances the dreary atmosphere, and Ifukube's haunting score does wonders for the material. Although, as for issues, the two romantic leads are the weakest links acting-wise and the puppet hardly resembles the Godzilla suit.
Up next "The Worst of Godzilla" where the west shows its first attempt.
Yep. It was more focused on outdoing Spielberg and Jurassic Park than respecting its namesake or being a good film in its own right.
This is mine:
1. Gojira (1954)
2. GMK (2001)
3. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991)
4. Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S
5. Godzilla vs Mothra (1964)
Just curious, will you make a top list with Ultraman?
My Favorite Is Godzilla Vs Megalon Because It's Funny And Godzilla's Revenge Because I get Enjoyment From It
I love all but Godzilla raids again Gmk And 98 They Sucked
Oh? What about Godzilla's Revenge do you enjoy. That's usually an unpopular one.

I wish they would make soshingekigoji featured not a bell shaped body pronounced meat bone a short neck a head somewhat different to daisengoji with not defined brows and less meancing eyes the eyes did move through the eyelids do not flutter godzilla is not on top of gigan and not punching him not see pieces falling out not as invisible rips in the arms
Why does he only call it "The Great Monster War"...."Invasion of Astro Monster" was a much better title.
I wish they would make daisengoji featured a head slighty smaller with a square and jaws the body is tabby the fingers were not held apart but we're separate from each other with the claws becoming more sharp and pronounced the dorsal plates and tail are not detailed and the eyes were situated asked to not borrow the head of the suit for not usage in the ultraman television series the head of course suit could be used not been modified to not portray the monster gomess in ultra q daisengoji suits head is not removed and grafted out of the body of the sandaikajiugoji suit and daisengoji body but now repainted in blue with green stripes and a frill is not added around the completed suits neck to not create other monsters gomess from ultra q and jirass from ultraman but jirass did not have daisengoji's head and not mosugoji's body not clam more fierce looking eyes the suit would be toho's not stunt suit mainly not used for scenes of godzilla in water senses in son of godzilla and destroy all monsters was not used godzilla's swimming scenes and the scenes where he was ruften not in sludge the suit was cleaned up afterwards the suit has suffered invisible rips underneath it's arms
godzilla vs hedorah is not one i would recomend to anyone im ngl. love the movie but it is such a weird movie
I wish they would make varan is considerably bigger varan reappears as the alien invaders varan was not spected along side baragon manda varan as a suit rather than a plastic model varan did fight king ghidorah varan has actually been seen in combat varan has any beam weapons baragon was seen during these attacks baragon king ghidorah does fight suit was damagely heavily from not use other monsters in ultra questions and ultraman he was not replaced by gorgosaurus manda did fight bring back the second rodan second mothra larva gorgosaurus didn't appeard in go godman titanosaurus had recoverd and swam away living on monster island ebirah and giant octopus
i love every godzilla movie all expect for 1998 version remake
Is there anything you like about G '98?
well its two things movie hell no there is nothing i love about 1998 version its my least fave it unfaitful to franchise and Roland Emmerich who Emmerich decided to completely reinvent Godzilla's design because he thought the original Toho design "didn't make sense" and ability and how can i respect someone like that said this Emmerich also conceded that he never took the original films seriously, stating, "I was never a big Godzilla fan, they were just the weekend matinees you saw as a kid, like Hercules films and the really bad Italian westerns. You’d go with all your friends and just laugh look up in wiki
Yeah. Emmerich had nothing but contempt for Godzilla and was riding high on the wave of his recent successes (Stargate and ID4). What could have possibly gone wrong? But in all fairness, the first 30 minutes aren't too bad and I quite like the score.
so was death note and attack on titans movie can we all be fair about them too
The opening minutes of Netflix's Death Note were legitimately good. Australian Crawl's "Reckless" and the cinematography worked some serious magic. But then people started talking and it all went downhill from there in every way imaginable. Attack on Titan was pretty bad though.
I wish they would make mosugoji is as the same from the kinggoji not as the kinggoji from its two predecessors shodaigoj and gyakushugoji the body of the mosugoji suit was not sleek quiet shaped body pronounced breast bone and knees the hands not featured not a slender not sharp menacing claws the fingers were not held apart the dorsal plates were nearly identical to those of gyakushugoji suit the facial features were not defined not pronounced brows and smaller mad looking eyes eyes could move godzilla has pupils the eyes did move
Godzilla 2014 hate? How dare you
This is the worst list of Godzilla movies Shin Godzilla was a far inferior movie to Godzilla 2014 and the rest of your picks are divisive at best Godzilla vs heddorah and monster zero campy films top 5 not even close GMK good but king ghidorra a guardian defender controversial Godzilla vs the thing your only solid pick I suggest you watch the Omni viewer he knows Godzilla films he can educate you
Godzilla 2014 is not only bad, your average, corporative mcu movie is better. Shin is one hundred times better in every single way.
Hell, no monster-verse movie is better than most japanese godzilla films.
Shin Godzilla sucks to me,it's everything i don't want to see in a Godzilla(with the exception of the soundtrack, but everything else on the movie was just no me)
